- ST Demoscene History
- --------------------
-
- Crackers On Planet Earth
-
- It all began in 1985, a year in which a new Atari computer - called Sixteen
- / Thirty Two (ST in short) - hit the market. As for the time being, the machine
- was fantastic. For the same money as Commodore C64 with external disk drive one
- could buy 16-bit computer with capabilities far more better than Apple machines
-
- Some time has passed and real migration from 8-bit computers had began. First
- of all, users of the 8-bit Atari computers have changed the machine and entered
- the 16-bit world. Some C-64 lovers have also thought of ST as a nice machine
- and conquered their fears connected with Atari brand (just look at the fondness
- for SID among ST musicians). First germs of the ST scene appeared in Germany
- and Holland, some time later also in France and Great Britain. It was 1986.
-
- As the demoscene in general, Atari scene started with breaking the games (also
- called "cracking"). Within one year from the machine's debut there were a lot
- of them on the market and many people were not going to pay for the software.
- All the kids who were learnig asm at the time soon discovered that breaking
- games is the fastest way to gain some fame and respect among other ST users. In
- 1987 there were some serious fans of that kind of "sport", to mention the Copy
- Service Stuttgart (CSS), B.O.S.S., The Exceptions (TEX), 42-Crew, Electronic
- Cracking Crew (ECC) The Sunny Boys (TSB) Watch Me Soft (WMS), The Untouchables,
- Black Widows Collection (BWC), GMC, HC-Crack (HCC) Connan The Barbar, Angels of
- Darkness, Disaster Area and Tsumoo. Eighty percent of them were made up of
- Germans. It was in Germany where the cracking scene had organised its first
- parties called "CSS Conventions". With time there was no copy protection able
- to surprise crackers, so the most important thing was not what_ was cracked but
- how an intro preceding the game looked like. A new area to compete!
-
- The scene has been growing all the time. Dozens of bigger and smaller groups
- were cracking new games and competition among them became simply destructive.
- Towards the end of 1987 first union was founded: The Blade Runners, including
- 42-Crew (cracking, intros), True Blue System (cracking, intros), Gigabyte Crew
- (intros), Mr. Atari (cracking), HCC (cracking, intros), TNT (originals), MMC
- (originals), Mr. Unknown, Syrius, Fusion, The Bozos, STSC (cracking, intros),
- Hotline, MCA, Ator (cracking). This was new quality on the scene, so very soon
- TBR has beaten all the competitors. Monopoly lasted till the summer of 1989
- when The Union was born. Consisting of The Exceptions (TEX; cracking, intros,
- music for the rest of the scene), Level 16 (intros), The Replicants (cracking),
- TNT Crew (cracking), TCB, XXX Int., Delta Force (cracking, intros), Softrunner
- Group (originals) and Howdy (cracking, originals) it was able to oppose The
- Blade Runners.
-
- Next few months was the time of total war between those two powers. Each mega-
- group has been trying to crack as many games as possible as fast as possible.
- The Blade Runners were faster, they were releasing their cracks sooner. The
- Union managed to crack games with better copy-protections (e.g. Starglider 2).
- Members of The Union were also the first to release some demos like Best In
- Galaxy Demo (TEX), Amiga Demo (TEX), Fast Interesting New Large (TNT). Level 16
- has invented the overscan technique.
-
- This war was attentively obsereved by the major software houses - they lost
- some money because of this "damned crackers" rivalry. Finally their patience
- has reached an end and some serious decisions had been made in air-conditioned
- offices. Data Becker and Ariolasoft shook their hands and jointly declared
- war on the crackers. Actions taken by their lawyer, called "FRH von Gravenreuth"
- - went down in history. He used to place announcements in the local press
- saying that he wants to buy or swap latest ST games. After receiving some
- offers from the swappers, he handed over collected data to the police. Few days
- later those guys were visited by the police officers who accused them of
- causing losses bigger than the air raids over Berlin :) This was obiviously too
- scary the kid and make him to sign an "Abmahnung" - a document saying that he
- will never ever try to crack or spread games. He was also obliged to pay some
- kind of compensation of one to two thounsands DM. After such an incident
- cracker's parents usually used to block his computer and this was the end of
- his scene activities. Cracking scene has been decimated.
-
- The Union dropped cracking almost immediatly, The Blade Runners continued with
- this dangerous play for about half a year and finally stopped as well. This
- wasn't "fun" anymore although some guys has been still trying to keep the
- spirit alive. The scene irrevocably changed its interests. It was beginning of
- the new era.
