- Grey: Yo, Netherlands!
-
- Ear_X: Hello Grey/MSB and atari-scene!
-
- Grey: Believe it or not but the beginning of every interview always gets me
- down! =) I am trying to start it in an original way, however I always
- manage to fail... Now it's your turn, help me out with this!
-
- Ear_X: Erm. Thank you for having this nice interview with me Grey, I am
- honoured. Greets to my parents and gf! *waves* Was that _unoriginal_
- enough? =))
-
- Grey: ... :o)
-
- Grey: If anyone ever organizes a competition for the longest and the most
- wicked nickname in the world then you simply beat dis! Maybe not
- everyone knows but Ear_X is short for Earchaeopteryx (what da hell!).
- It's hard enough to spell it right, so I didn't bother to understand
- the meaning of it! =)) Could you tell us a story about this nick and
- why you decided to choose THIS one?
-
- Ear_X: A long story: I kind of liked the picture of a prehistoric bird.
- Well I saw it in a schoolbook once and it looked awesome with teeth
- in it's beak and clutches on it's wings. Sounds vague? Well, read
- on. ;) Anyway, this "bird" can be seen as a link between the dino's
- and modern birds. At that time I saw the picture I was (trying to)
- make music instead of coding. And I fucked up the name of the bird
- from "Archaeopteryx" to "EARchaeopteryx". Badly chosen because I'm
- absolutely crap at making music. Though the bird part goes well with
- my person, cos I work on a Falcon ;)
- I guess getting this weird name was basicly an exercise in trying to
- be overly original. Since most nicknames had already been used more
- than a dozen of times already, I wanted an _original_ name. hehe.
-
- Grey: What was your 1st Atari computer you bought? Was it your own choice
- or you got it as the gift from family? And why you decided to trust
- Atari?
-
- Ear_X: It was the good old 600XL. The 'little atari' which I heard is it's
- name in poland? My father got a 1040STf first. For my 10th birthday I
- got that 600XL. I did not like the 8bit as much as the ST. Especially
- the tapes and the 16KB were hell. The whole atari thing originated
- from some other part of the family. My uncle used STs for his job,
- because they were cheaper than PC's/Mac's and could do alot more. So
- my uncle told this to my dad and my dad to me. You get the idea. The
- brand became kind of a 'trusted' name from the early beginning.
- Later on I fell in love with the 1040 that I got. A very logical and
- effective machine with a good bunch of dedicated users / programmers
- behind it! The Falcon was only a direct progression of that one and I
- love it more! Even if it is a "compromised" design and alot of people
- didn't like it (esp the 'professional'/boring people).
-
- Grey: Before you decided to join the atari demo-scene you were known as a
- game maker. One of your projects was Neurobotix, the Falcon game. I
- remember that you were very enthusiastic about making games for Atari
- computers and that the demo-scene sector wasn't your goal, right?
-
- Ear_X: Hey! how do you know that grey ?! hehehe, no kidding, it's true.
- Actually I wanted to go on making games which might have been a bit
- wiser since more people like games and demos are just for those weird
- 'scener' folks. ;) At the time though I wanted to make very complex
- games. Realising they might take a little too much time to make and
- especially how much I liked the low level and optimising side of
- things. I went for the demo scene. Actually I'm glad I made the step.
- The scene is really filled with cool, friendly, creative people and
- nothing is about the money or such. Most probably _the_ reason for me
- entering the demoscene were the maggie team (hi chris!), the old fun
- crew (hi bonus!) and of course grey who motivated me to release my
- first demo for the quast'98 party.
-
- Grey: Now you became one of the greatest Falcon coders and you seem to
- improve your abillities pretty fast. Is there any chance to see the
- new multi-part demo from you?
-
- Ear_X: Greatest falcon coders. I kinda like the sound of that hahahah =))
- Well.. First of all, it's easy cos there are really not that many of
- them left. Mostly you just try to make better effects than previous
- attempts by coders who have quit by now. Secondly, I guess all active
- falcon coders are prolly equally capable as I am. At least, I don't
- see them running into much trouble making similar effects. About the
- new demo... well erm hehheheh... *cough* *blush* (earx has a kindof
- nervous breakdown here) I knew you'd bring this up Michal and you
- have every right. It seems there is alot of work still to be done. I
- don't want it to be just another average demo, but one above the
- standards. So the question is not if a new demo will be completed,
- but _when_ it will be completed...
-
- Grey: What's the current members of FUN industries? What happens with Bonus
- for example?
-
- Ear_X: They all seem to be going their seperate ways, though there is the
- occasional group meeting. It seems the crew is a bit divided in
- oldschool and newskool parts respectively. I bought bonus' falcon but
- he got himself some other falcy to use so he still has a passion for
- things I guess! The newer guys are still active if not a little
- consumed with their private affairs. And I'm prolly the worst. ;)
-
- Grey: Are you going to organize another PMP party?
-
- Ear_X: Good question. It would be a good idea and there have been alot of
- plans. But organising is a tedious job as especially havoc knows by
- now. Last pmp was worth it though. Just amazing to see alot of crazy
- atarisceners in your own neighbourhood. Unforgettable. Either havoc,
- dforce or nut are going to be responsible for the 'possible' new
- edition of pmp. And at this moment I am more certain about the first
- two members.
-
- Grey: What do you think about 4MB vs 14MB war? Is this 14MB for the Falcon
- a real step forward? Could you call it PC-like bahaviour?
-
- Ear_X: I admire the coders who can make things run smoothly on the lighter
- hardware and keep it upwards compatible. If an exciting technology
- requires heavier hardware I'm quite neutral. The tendency to go for
- the heavy hardware and don't think about optimisation is the PC way,
- yes. It's quite lame and there is little 'sport' to it, but if it
- enables new things I won't start screaming bloody murder.14 MB stuff?
- Why not, but I'll stick to making 4MB stuff for a while to come.
-
- Grey: How do you see the future of Atari scene? If you have to choose
- between "more releases", "better effects" and "ppl attitude" what
- it could be? What's the most wanted thing which we miss these days?
-
- Ear_X: I must say about 'better effects' : I do think we've had a kindof
- technical paradise the last years. With some simply outstanding
- achievements. I mean the refreshing new style effects by escape, msb,
- checkpoint, cream, dhs, mind design and then some more. Also the ST
- seems to have been sqeezed a bit further. So I guess these are very
- healty things and bizarre in the days of 100000GHz crap gatesmobiles
- with no attention to detail at all. What a contrast. =) I'd really
- appriciate more releases, though I'm happy with anything that is a
- bit compatible and has a 'feel-good-factor' to it: small demos, games
- and well designed tools. I tend to get inspired by all of these.
- What I noticed the last years is that negative blabla by sceners has
- the opposite effect on me and I estimate on others as well. Anyway,
- eventhough many thought the whole atari thing would die out. Still
- there is a scene in 2001 and there even are newcomers. Cult-machines
- and scenes remain fascinating stuff to alot of people.. Draw your own
- conclusions.
-
- Grey: MSB dediced to join to the disk-mag community. Is there any need for
- another one? (an answer won't be censored!)
-
- Ear_X: Well, you're not scared of criticism, that's good..... To be frank, I
- read every mag issue, but nowadays I maybe look over them a few times
- and that's it. (I've only finished one maggie hidden quest before and
- for what?!? and article about castration? you sick people you :PP) I
- like reading interviews, and courses in anything creative like
- tracking, painting, coding, etc. Reviews I used to read alot. But now
- I rather only watch a prod then read someone's opinion about it. For
- the 'scene' feeling and so the 'feelgood' factor a new diskmag is
- appreciated. Somehow a good old diskmag shell is so much more
- appealing than a html browser. So, please go ahead! =) BTW the zeroth
- issue of chosneck was great, so at least try and make a followup :))
-
- Grey: How it is to live in Holland when almost everything isn't forbidden?
- Don't you think it went too far already?
-
- Ear_X: Finally an interesting question (oops)? Well I hit my gf over her ass
- with some whips and chains alot and she likes to pinch my nipples and
- uses needles on me. *ouch* Oh? You're talking about drugs and
- euthanasia? How boring ;) About cannabis, I totally agree with the
- dutch government. It's not any more bad than alcohol. If you look at
- violent offences: Alcohol does alot more for that particular field of
- crime. Also Holland has a very low amount of harddrug addicts and a
- very low amount of homeless people. No wonder that now belgium is
- trying to legalize cannabis as well (hurrah!). About euthanasia: a
- very difficult topic. The law was meant to benefit people, but still
- I can see some motherfuckers without a conscience misusing it.
-
- Grey: Okay pal, I shout my mouth =) Thanx for time and see ya soon I hope!
-
- Ear_X: Been nice! BeST of luck with chosneck!!!
