- Grey: Salut! =)
-
- Strider: Hello Grey! I'm happy to be here in the first issue of CHOSNECK. I
- hope it will be a great diskmag, as great as Undercover ;-)
-
- Grey: Let's begin this craptalk with usual stuph. Throw some words about
- yourself, what are you doing in so called "real life"?
-
- Strider: Informatics everywhere! :-P
- I'm playing with computers all day long, during my studies and at
- home. Oh, that's just some Linux and Windozz stuff, so it's not very
- important for an Atari diskmag. In fact, this year I have no "real
- life" because that's my ultimate studient year, in other words I'm
- very busy at university. But don't worry, I still go to the cinema,
- or in pubs with friends!
-
- Grey: When begun your adventure with Atari computers? Do you remember
- your 1st impression?
-
- Strider: My love story with Atari computers begun in January 1991. I wanted to
- buy a new computer for Christmas. Some friends already had ST's and
- STE's, so I've bought the same computer. It was a 1040 STE with color
- monitor, and I still use it sometimes, especially when I feel a
- certain nostalgy (I love watching "old school" demos). I have just
- updated my STE to 4 MBytes and that's all: neither CD-Rom reader nor
- hard disks.
-
- In December 1995, I wanted to buy a Falcon for Chistmas (yeah, you
- will notice I always buy computers for Christmas), and a friend told
- me he saw cheap Falcons in a shop. That's how I get my Falcon, and I
- was very happy: IDE and SCSI buses, the incredible DSP, etc. In 1997,
- I've decided to put the motherboard into a PC tower. Because of the
- motherboard size, I had to buy a giant tower. It was quite long and I
- had problems with SCSI, but now all is OK. You can see some snaps of
- my towerized Falcon on my site (http://strider.atari.org).
-
- Secondly, what was my first impression? Well, when I switched on the
- STE for the very first time, I was quite disappointed: the green
- desktop seemed very strange for me! My first reaction was: "hey, is
- that all?". And the mouse was a funny toy for me. Before having the
- STE, I had some 8-bit computers with embedded BASIC language, and the
- ST graphical interface was a very new thing for me. Now, I use the GEM
- every day and I think it was a very good operating system for a
- computer born in 1985.
-
- Grey: When you became a member of demo-scene? What was your 1st Atari group
- you decided to join?
-
- Strider: I don't know... I was a bit fed up with ST games, and I've discovered
- the demos thanks to Senser/Supremacy (he was called Fresh at this
- time). So, I've joined a lousy crew called Epsilon in 1992 or 1993,
- and I've started making demos with... Demo Construction Kit! We made
- some megademos with it and then serious things began with GFA Basic 3.
- I've tried the 68000 assembler but it was a bit hard for me.
- Nevertheless, it helped me knowing how does a computer works. A bit
- later, I've joined both Typhoon and Toxic Team, and I've started
- making ST Collection demo compilations.
-
- Grey: I guess that Supremacy is your current group, right? Could you tell
- us what's your status in this group? Coder, graphician or...?
-
- Strider: Yeah, I remember that Razaac (Supremacy's big boss) phoned me when I
- was in Typhoon and asked me to join his crew. My current status in
- Supremacy is GFA-coder, Toxic Mag editor and sometimes graphist. I'm
- also Web designer for our sites.
-
- Grey: Are you up-to-date with the current state of Atari scene in France?
- What about new projects from such crews like Dune or Oxygene?
-
- Strider: You know, there are only three active French Atari crews: Sector One,
- Loud! and Supremacy. There are also lonesome guys like Chuck/Dune,
- Exocet/Pyjama, Hylst/Manga Maniacs and Sine/Idemline. I know that
- Chuck wants to make a demo with Sector One, I've seen a preview in a
- coding party in April 2000. I don't really know what's up this Sector
- One or Loud! projects...
-
- Grey: Let's back to the past for a while. I still remember these cute
- Falcon productions released by various groups from France, just
- like EKO, SCARFACE, TOYS, MJJ PROD, DNT-CREW, MISFITS, ADRENALINE,
- TRIO, EXA... These groups simply ruled and french scene became very
- famous. What happend to them? What could be a reason of such fast
- scene-leaving?
-
- Strider: Everybody grows up. Most of them were students. When they finished
- their studies, they got a job, they sometimes married, and I think
- that's why they leave the demo scene. The other reason is the lack of
- power of Atari computers and the PC's getting more and more cheap.
- Finally, in 1992-1993, most of French ST/Falcon crews died. It's a sad
- story, even if some coders such as Leonard/OXG or Chuck/Dune still
- code some stuff for our favorite computers.
-
- Grey: You became a main editor of Toxic mag after ST Survivor decided to
- leave this magazine. At the beginning you seemed to have a lot of
- enthusiasm and we've got new issues of Toxic mag short after. But
- suddenly something went wrong... bunch of months passed away and
- no single issue has been released. Wassup? Did you decide to give
- up? Can we expect any issues in the future?
-
- Strider: It's mainly due to a lack of motivation. Not mine, but the motivation
- of our readers. I had no feedback, and it's hard to know if you're
- doing a good job or not. But I'm still working on Toxic Mag 19. I must
- admit that Thyrex isn't very motivated for the ST version too, but I
- hope it will be released some day. On the other hand, I'm converting
- the ASCII articles into HTML pages for the Web version. During the
- Iradium Party 2 in February 2001, I've converted some articles, for
- example. I think I've about 60 or 70 articles for Toxic Mag 19, so
- that's very long to format and to convert. Last month, I've installed
- DreamWeaver 4 on my PC, I hope it will help me a lot ;-)
-
- Oh, by the way, the issue 19 will be the last one. Well, the last one
- for Atari computers, because with another Supremacy member called
- QueST, we have some ideas about making a webzine. Its name will
- probably be "A real Toxic Mag live!". We will work on this project as
- soon as the issue 19 will be released. At this time, we even don't
- know if this new webzine will be in French or English (note: we don't
- want to make a bilingual magazine). Just wait and see, as usually! :-/
-
- Grey: As I already mentioned STS decided to leave Toxig mag to become
- a main editor of "Undercover" (now "Alive!") magazine. You were
- co-operating in the past but now you edit two different magazines
- which compete. How could you rate the "Alive!"? What's the low and
- high points?
-
- Strider: Well, there is just one issue of "Alive!", I can't really tell what
- are the low and high points... Obviously, "Alive!" has a great
- advantage upon "Toxic Mag": there are English articles. "Alive!" issue
- 1 has also a lot of articles, written by a lot of sceners. Perhaps CiH
- from Maggie will work for "Alive!" issue 2, who knows?
-
- Grey: STS seems to give up, I've heard rumours he has no motivation to
- continue editing "Alive!". Did you talk with him about it?
-
- Strider: Yeah, you're right, we have speaken about this topic on IRC. He told
- me he's busy with his social life, his work, his friends... So bad he
- has lost all his motivation, maybe he will be back soon in the demo
- scene.
-
- Grey: Smile back on da face! The interview is over =) Thanx for your
- answers. The next few lines belong to you... :)) Feel free to
- say anything to anybody :)
-
- Strider: Yeah, thank you, pal! To those who also have a PC, you should get the
- emulator SainT because it's really excellent! I've seen the "Oh
- crickey wot a scorcher" and all "Holocaust" demos with it, that's the
- best emulator I've ever seen! It's free and you can leech it at
- "http://saint.atari.org".
- End of advertising part ;-)
-
- I would like to say hello to all the active Atarists in the world,
- they know how they are. But I feel a bit pessimist about our future.
- Atari crews are dying, are the good old times over?
-
- Grey, I was happy to answer to your questions and I'm impatient to
- read your new diskmag! As for me, I have to finish the Toxic Mag 19,
