  17. MUI is a system to generate and maintain graphical user interfaces. With
  18. the  aid  of  a  preferences program, the user of an application has the
  19. ability to customize the outfit according to his personal taste.
  20.  
  21. MUI is distributed as shareware. To obtain a complete package containing
  22. lots of examples and more information about registration please look for
  23. a  file  called "muiXX.lha" (XX means the latest version number) on your
  24. local bulletin boards or on public domain disks.

  36.   What is the HP4L setter?
  37.     You probably already know, but if not....  The HP4L setter is the ONLY
  38.      program available for the Amiga (to my knowledge) that will let you
  39.      set your HP LaserJet 4L printer.
  40.  
  41.   Why this program?
  42.     I became very disgusted that the software supported by HP was/is for the
  43.      Ibm and Mac ONLY!.  Thus I set out to write a program of comprable worth
  44.      for us MORE fortunate user who own the Best System Avail.  The Amiga!
  45.  
  46.   About the previous version (HP4L v 1.0 / beta):
  47.     The first version was a very CRUDE, quick and dirty program to get myself
  48.      started.  I released it, mainly to see if I would get any support for a
  49.      program of this type.  Since there is this new version, that must mean I
  50.      got SOME support and know that there are other 4L users out there.  Since
  51.      the first version isn't much (just a sloppy interface, I redid the whole
  52.      damn thing).

  54.   About the new version (2.0):
  55.     This version (and future versions) will probably be pretty much like this
  56.      one in the way of GUI's.  
  57.     I COMPLETELY redid the GUI in this version with MUI (Many thankx to
  58.      Stefan Stuntz: the programmer of MUI!)

  62.   INSTALLING:
  63.     The main program (HP2) can be put anywhere.
  64.     The directory "MUI" in the libs: directory.  These are objects used by
  65.      the MUI gadget system.  These MUST go in LIBS:MUI directory.  The
  66.      program will look for them there.  If you already have MUI installed
  67.      on your system, then you should not need to worry about it.

  69.     NOTE: If you do not have MUI installed (and do not copy the MUI dir
  70.            over, this PROGRAM will NOT work!

  72.           The Classes are part the the GUI (provided by MUI).  If you are a
  73.            user of MUI, then you probably already have it setup.

  78.   Now, ONTO the workings and features of this grand NEW version!
  79.  
  80.   Everything should be pretty simple.  When you first load the program,
  81.    you will have a main menu (window).  Select where you want to go:
  82.  
  83.                                MAIN WINDOW:
  84.    Page Setup:     This option will let you define settings dealing with the
  85.                    format of your page.  (ie. Size, Landscape, etc)
  86.  
  87.    Type Styles:    This option will let you define settings dealing with the
  88.                    type of text your printer uses. (ie. Font, pitck size, etc)
  89.                    NOTE: This option is NOT avail. in the UN-Registered version
  90.                    
  91.    Print Quality:
  92.                    This option will let you define settings dealing with the
  93.                    quality of print.  (ie. Density, Economode, Ret)
  94.    Memory:
  95.                    This option will let you define settings dealing with the
  96.                    memory of the 4L.  (ie. Image Adapt and Page Protection)
  97.    Send Cfg:
  98.                    Send the settings to the printer.  This takes about
  99.                    1/2 of a second :)
  100.    Defaults:
  101.                    This nifty little button will change all the gadgets back
  102.                    to the FACTORY/DEFAULT settings.
  103.                    NOTE: This just updates the GUI.  It does NOT send it to the
  104.                          printer.  You must do that via the Send Cfg button.

  106.    Save:           This gadget will allow you to save your configuration.
  107.                    NOTE: This option is NOT avail. in the UN-Registered version
  108.  
  109.    Load:           Likewise, this gadget allows the loading of pre-saved
  110.                    printer configurations.
  111.                    NOTE: This option is NOT avail. in the UN-Registered verison
  112.  
  113.                                Page Settings
  114.  
  115.    Copies:         Select the number of copies the printer will print of each
  116.                    page.
  117.    
  118.    Lines/Page:     This option (for now) is over-written by the following
  119.                    option.  (I need to get the sizes (lines/page) for each
  120.                    type of paper before making this option work.

  122.    Paper Size:     Simply selects what size paper you are using.
  123.  
  124.    Orientation:    Select Portrait (normal- prints top to bottom) or Landscape
  125.                    (non normal :) - prints right to left)
  126.  
  127.    Manual Feed:    Turn the printers manual feed mode on/off.

  129.    AutoCont:       Turn the autocontinue mode on/off

  133.    REGISTER AND GET THIS WORKING!

  137.    Economode:      Toggle the economode feature of the 4L (really nifty)

  139.    Ret:            Set the RET.  (Look up in printer manual)

  141.    Density:        Set the Density.  (Look up in printer manual)

  145.    Image Adapt:    Toggle Image Adaption on/off/auto.  (Memory compression)

  147.    Page Protect:   Toggle Page Protection on/off/auto. (Look in manual)

  152.    That about does it for the buttons, etc.

  154.    A few more notes about the gui/mui.  You can open ALL windows and select
  155.     from them all without any problems.  Another feature of mui's gui is
  156.     that after you open the window(s) you can move and size them.  When you
  157.     do this the configurations of the window(s) are then saved in ENV: (You
  158.     may need to copy them to ENVARC: depending on your setup).

  160.    There is also an Iconify gadget now.  (Handled by MUI :)

  174.  non-functioning buttons to function, then you should consider registering
  175.  the HP4L setter.
