According to the Video Text of German music channel VIVA, The Buggles will
reform for one day for a special appearance at the "ZTT Birthday Party".
Does that mean that they will be the "Very Special Guest"?

Well, I got there...
The venue was tiny (300 people-ish?) and as this was a bit of a ZTT
festival and there were 5 bands, I got the impression that I was the
only person in there not on someone's guest list :-)
The place was 3/4 full, and there was no problem getting to stand at the
stge front, which I did for the Buggles...
Many famous faces around, TCH was next to me at the bar at one point -
buying his own drinks! (Guiness for any fact fanatics out there), and
Lol Creme was standing around too... I got the impression that I should
have recognised many more of the wealthy & greying people there, but I'm
not too up on prog rockers :-)
First, Lee Grifiths played a mostly acoustic set on a 6 string, with an
occasional drum or string section accompanying... I don't know how
representaitve of his work this set was, but I got the impression that
he'll be filling Seal's vacant shoes quite nicely if TCH is producing.
Next was the Marbles - a 3 piece rock band from ireland - very 'indie'
rock, melodic but agressive... one song kept threatening to turn into
the Jam's 'That's Entertainment', and the last one would fit well on the
last Blur album.
The encore to their set was announced as 'a treat for those of us over
19 years old'....
This was the Buggles re-union, which was slightly disappointing in that
it consisted of just one song (video killed...), but rapturously
recieved (possibly because 90% of the audience work for ZTT?).
The band consisted of Trevor Horn on vocals (playing to the crowd by
blinking under the spotlights and looking most out of place
centre-stage) Geoff playing the Marble's Rhodes piano (no big keyboard
rig!), the Marbles providing drums, lead and bass guitar and a female
vocalist doing the 'ooh-oohs' and all of them turned up on stage with
the trademark glasses (quickly disposed of by all but TCH).
Sonically it was a slightly faster but much 'rock-ier' version of the
song (maybe closer to the Presidents of the USA version than the Buggles
original), well executed if a little tounge-in-cheek. Tevor forgot to
switch his megaphone on for the first line of the megaphone part, and
Geoff didn't have enough hands to do the twiddly part after "they took
the credit for your second symphony". The band recieved a standing
ovation, and sloped off to the bar.
Later, the other 2 ZTT bands took the stage... (the gaps between bands
beng filled by a projection screen showing (to the wrong soundtrack)
Adamski's last video and what could have been a new art of noise video -
a fancy computer-generated affair)
Headspace are a 'spiritualised-esqe' band that were not my cup of tea (3
violins, 3 guitars... no drums and no choruses), and lastly the Frames
(not referred to as 'Frames DC' BTW) who were frankly apallingly
shamboilc. Another Irish act, sort of a grown up version of the
Pogues...they were beset with technical problems and lacked the stage
presence to keep the audience with them during the pauses between songs
(which were often longer than the songs themselves).
Overall it was well worth the 5 pounds admission price considering the 5
bands on offer, even if I kept harking back to ZTT's 'value of
entertainment' show many years ago, which did the same thing a lot
better. As an introduction to ZTT's new acts, it served it's purpose...
I'll be buying Lee Griffiths stuff, recommending the Marbles to a
friend, and avoiding the output of Headspace & The Frames.

Hello,
I've posted pictures of the ZTT backtrax US promo CD on my web site. When
you get there click on "Mark's Picks" and then on "ZTT backtrax" and then
the pictures and text will come up. I'd love to know if the corrected
version with the track listing that actually matches the sleeve was ever
released. Overall, I think the promo was very nicely designed. The text
about ZTT's importance in electronica music is a bit over-hyped, out-dated
(pacifiers? come on, that scene died out in like 1990!), and out in general
(why mention The Frames, Shane MacGowan or Adamski's Thing?).
Oh well, injoy the scans.

Subject: (ztt) A/B ZTT FGTH WttP CD's TLA PDQ :)
Date: 21 Dec 1998 04:37:55 -0800 (PST)
I happened upon a used 1984(ish) Island US CD release of "Welcome to the
Pleasuredome" and figured, well, what the hey, it's got that cachet that
owning the Uni rerelease doesn't quite carry. Now I see that the
tracklists are apparently different:
Island version: (lifted from Laz's discography)
CD: 1984 US (Island; 7 90232-2)
1:55 The World Is My Oyster (including Well, Snatch of Fury)
13:35 Welcome To The Pleasuredome [CD mix]
3:54 Relax (come fighting)
6:09 War (and hide)
9:08 Two Tribes (annihilation) ["for the victims of ravishment"]
1:14 the last voice
4:02 Born To Run
4:12 Happy Hi!
2:48 Wish (The Lads Were Here)
4:49 the ballad of 32
2:59 Krisco Kisses
4:09 Black Night White Light
4:16 The Only Star In Heaven
5:25 The Power Of Love
1:07 bang
Universal version (tracklisting for "original" release also stolen from
Laz' ZTT discog):
CD: 1998 US (ZTT/Universal; UD-53199)
1:55 The World Is My Oyster (including Well, Snatch of Fury)
13:35 Welcome To The Pleasuredome
3:54 Relax (come fighting)
6:09 War (and hide)
3:20 Two Tribes (for the victims of ravishment)
0:31 (tag) [orgasm]
1:39 Ferry (go)
4:02 Born To Run
3:04 San Jose (the way)
2:48 Wish (The Lads Were Here)
4:49 The Ballad of 32
2:56 Krisco Kisses
4:09 Black Night White Light
4:16 The Only Star In Heaven
5:25 The Power Of Love
1:07 bang...
So I guess my question is, what's the deal? If I read the discography
right, the Island version was released first as CID 101, then the second
version - which matches the MC/LP release - came out the next year. Was
this a case of realigning the tracklisting to take advantage of a longer
amount of music space available on CD as opposed to LP? Why replace
"Happy Hi" with "San Jose?" Or is this just typical "switch 'em up and
get 'em to buy everything twice in every format" par for the course ZTT of
the times? :)
At any rate, I guess I'm glad I have both of them, JUST to be a completist
nut.
By the way, whoever said a few months back that the Uni booklet "looks
like a bad scan" - I agree completely. Maybe someday I'll scan both back
covers and you can be as sad as I am and do a comparison for yourself...

The San Jose version is what you got if you bought WTTP on vinyl. You'll
notice a slight variation in the mix of the title track. Specificly Holly
singing a line from Ferry 'cross the Mersey. This would be the first version
of WTTP
The Island issue is changed from the original release for whatever reason.

The latter, I think. Remember that Propaganda's "A Secret Wish" and "Who's

The cynic in me suggests that "Happy Hi" is published by a ZTT-related
company, and San Jose isn't.

Neither are "Born To Run" or "War." I suppose they could have done it to
reduce their payout (they left off "Ferry" as well), but it seems more like
a multi-format strategy than a cost-saving one. ZTT was infamous for the
former, not really for the latter.
