The Ruins are a duo (which, believe me, when you hear them will shock
you!) consisting of bass, drums, vocals, and effects(lots of 'em). They
could easily be subjugated to the 'Noise' category, but are FAR beyond
the label 'Japanese noise band' as far as I am concerned. Both musicians
are as technically proficient as ANY musicians I have ever heard or
seen (when they choose to be tight to each other, it is almost ridiculous
how tight they are with how complex a musical structure they choose).
They sing their own made-up language which is intricately complex in
itself--exploiting their voices both rhythmically and melodically as
beautifully as they do their external noise-makers. They have
both free improvisational influences as well as progressive rock
influences which makes for a very interesting musical sound. There are
moments of intensity that bank on frightening to moments of extreme
silliness. I believe that both musicians are geniuses (literally), but
the drummer, Tatsuya Yoshida, is the main creative force behind the
band. Until just recently, he wrote All of the music and lyrics. There
are other projects that Yoshida has that he seems to drive, and they all
are reminiscent of Ruins in one way or another (this is not to say that
they are not in their own right incredible), which tells me that he has a
very uniquely creatively brilliant style of musicianship that can't help
but shine through in whatever he does. The new album is called
"Hyderomastgroningem" (these are the type of words that fill up the lyric
sheets) it is on Tzadik, and the catalog number is TZ 7202. GET IT--and
be assured that live they are just as good--if not better, just as
complex--if not more complex, and just as tight--you can only get so
tight. By the way, they have four other albums that are just as awesome
as this new one (some may say they are better), but I am just overwhelmed
by this one because it is brand new and I am still freshly exploring it.
There is a terrific interview with Ruins in a Zine called "HOE" that was
conducted by a true Ruins enthusiast. I recommend it highly. LOTS of
reviews and several other interviews make it a package full of
information. I don't have the address for HOE on me right now, but I'll
post it soon.
There is also an interview with Ruins in "browbeat magazine" which I
haven't read yet but am anxious to. The magazine includes features on
Zorn, the Boredoms, and lots of other neat stuff. It is run by one of
the subscribers of this digest--Mike Rizzi--obviously, he can tell you a lot
more about it, how to get it, etc.--than I can.
Fare well,
Jake Rodriguez (sibbage@sfsu.edu)

Subject: Masada 4 & More Avant Merchandise
Folks, I'm still waiting for the "free" Masada disc to arrive by post and
the anticipation is killing me. Has anyone had any luck yet?
I've been wondering about the Rough Assemblage disc which is in abundance
locally these days. Reviews anyone? If anyone one needs it, I can
supply some thoughts on the Beresford and Zeena Parkins discs (all discs
mentioned here being on Avant). I like the latter a lot.
I'm also looking for opinions on D.Shea's "Shock Corridor" or the newish
one on Tzadik. His new one on sub rosa "i" (finally out) is quite nice.
Oh yes, and how about George Lewis (the disc on Avant or anything else for
that matter) and a recent arrival (at least I only just noticed it) on
Knitting Factory by Mark Dresser "the cabinet of dr. caligari" which
features Dave Douglas and someone else?
Thanks,
xander

Subject: Tzadik
The new Tzadik stuff seems like it'll be great. I'm especially looking forward
to the Teitelbaum. I was wondering if someone could pass along Tzadik's mailing
address and telephone or fax numbers . . . Thanks.

i saw yoshida at the new knitting factory (opening for *frith/baron*!!!
man was that great...) the other day. it was cool; he played drums,
guitar, keyboard, and sang (up to three of these at once!).
for those in nyc: frith is playing (solo? i'm not sure but it's a
reasonable guess) at the mercury lounge on monday.
