DIGEST #53, 5-8-95
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From sibbage@mercury.sfsu.edu Fri May 5 17:55:05 1995
Subject: Bailey's book
Anyone (or everyone) read Derek Bailey's book on improvisation? I just
finished it last night and I thought it was just fantastic. Very
inspiring/educational/thought provoking.
Going to see Painkiller tonight. (very excited) (5/5)
A list of the tour dates appears under Knitting Factory in the KF tours
section. (Somewhere here on this internet thing we are using.)
Now I've heard:
new Boredoms 5/9
new Ruins 5/23
new Mr. Bungle 8/28
Too slow.

Subject: Re: Painkiller kicked my ass
Saw Painkiller last night...like i stated before, this is my first live
initiation to zorn/laswell live...
oh my goodness, how the hell can i state the magnitude of euphoria the
show left me with? 2 solid hours (including encore) of extreme virtuoso
by all three members under intense sonic volume. just like i like it.
Some dub, some ambient (the encore especially; spacy bass effects,
hushed sax passages with loads of gimmickery, and Mick Harris coming out
from the drum riser to scream and scream), some jazz, LOADS of death
metal (thax Mick!) and improvisation. To a packed house at Moe's in
Seattle. My jawbone hurts from the weight of gravity as it fell over and
over again. Painkiller is the quintessential trans-genre trio.
And i got in for free! DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!!!

Is there a Zorn itinerary available? I'd be interested in when he may play
LA or San Diego.

yeah, I posted about the Victoriaville Music Festival a few zorn digest's
ago. It's nothing but a date list.. but that should be enough. Issue #43 is
where it's located.

: It's a tour with about 10 dates...I was going to

:
: p.s. Whoever has seen one of the Painkiller shows from
: this tour, fill us in. I'm going on friday 5/5...
Here it is:
KF Tours: PAINKILLER - Tour Schedule:
-------------------------------------------------
Wed..May 3..Pittsburgh, PA....Manny Theiner Prod
Thu..May 4..Seattle, WA.......Rock Candy
Fri..May 5..San Francisco,CA..Slim's
Sat..May 6..Minneapolis, MN...First Avenue
Sun..May 7..Chappel Hill, NC..Cat'sCraddle
Sun..May 9..Washington DC.....Black Cat
Wed..May 10.Boston, MA........Middle East
Fri..May 12.New York..........Knitting Factory
Sat..May 13.New York..........Knitting Factory
-------------------------------------------------
Oh yeah, i'll be seeing them @ the Black Cat on Tues, will let ya know whta i
think as they just balanced their sound system. By the way, is anybody gonna
be taping one of these shows?
Also, I saw @ a local music shop the cd of Material-Metatron but done by nyc
materials artist(?) Rockit. It was pretty cool covered in thick pin cushion
like thick black rubber (the whole case is about 1 inch thick) adhered to one
of Subharmonic's silly black cd cases and smelly like a auto tire repair shop
(silly, as in if you own more than a couple of them there is no writing on
the spines and ya havta guess where ya put the one you're looking for.. and I
have a few.. cds). The only prob was the thing was $28.52! Anybody know if
there are extra tracks or whatevrr on this thing or just a collector's item?
I allready picked up the 'Rockit' Execution Ground metal cased cd for the
samed price, and yes... it's not diff than the regular release.
I mailed my Masada coupons about 2 1/2 weeks ago (i know i'm impatient) but
was wondering if anybody has recv'd #4 back from Japan yet?
Also, have heard about a "Zorn CD featuring the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra
playing Zorn's 'For Your Eyes Only'. (Along with works by H. Miyake & J.
Maceda) ... It's on a Japanese label called Fontec." from Shiruba on aol.
Was wondering if anybody knew anything about this disc.

Subject: Masada #4
I just saw Painkiller this evening and afterward met and talked briefly
with them, and Mr. Zorn told me that in order to get the fourth Masada
disc, send the three proof of purchase things to the address and they'll
send it to you. I asked him if there was any potential problems with the
whole Yen issue and according to him, don't worry about that. He said
that as long as you send the proof of purchase, there's no problem. He
even said that if you no longer had them, you could photocopy the covers
of the three albums and that would also work.
Now, keep in mind that this was a very informal Q&A session at the end
of what had to be a tiring show, so I hope no-one gets pissed at me if
they try and nothing happens. I hope that it's really as easy as that, but for
now I really need to get some sleep. The show was incredible. Not
only was the performance great, but to find out that Mick Harris is a really
cool person was a real added bonus. After the show, Zorn and Harris
were out talking to people and signing autographs and the like and when
I asked Mick if Laswell was coming out, he invited me backstage to talk to
them. Very cool.
I've met dozens of my favorite performers over the past few years, but to
be able to not only meet three of my favorites at once, but to also find out
that they're great people was an added bonus that made this performance
even better.

By the way, for anyone that's interested, Harris mentioned that most (if not
all) of his previously Import-only stuff was soon coming out on
Subharmonic, so it should be available domestically very soon.

Subject: Painkiller
After only finding out about the Minneapolis Painkiller show Friday night,
I'm happy to say I was able to get a ticket & also successfully make the 6
hour trip (by bus) to see them on Saturday.
What can I say: Absolutely brilliant!! The crowd could do nothing except
stand in awe watching the three masters at work. They played nearly a two
hour set of improvs built around selections from "Execution Ground" and
even came out for a short encore. Got to chat with both Zorn & Mick . . .
and got John Hancocks from all three. Definitely check them out during one
of their last few dates if you have the chance. Not to be missed!!

Subject: Painkiller in Chapel Hill
This is a sketchy response to the Painkiller show in Chapel Hill, NC on
5/7. I may fill it out some later, but I wanted to get my early thoughts
out to people who could be seeing them soon so they can have a little
context to decide if they want to go, etc.
While there were a lot of things I can find to be critical about, I
generally enjoyed the show and would encourage everyone to attend. The
pieces they played were much more loosely combined then on either of the
domestic releases. The general idea was this (and many of these threads
could have been specific to the sound system in the club): Laswell played
a lot - sometimes overplaying, usually heavily treated and manipulated
stuff. Zorn played sporadically, always using a pretty heavy - and
suprising constant delay patch. Much of the Zorn stuff used drones
countered with those lucious runs of his. Mick Harris pounded, but his
drum sound was thin compared to the heavily treated wailing of the guys
up front. His dub parts worked a lot better in terms of balance.
The playing was free and often really full, but there could have been a
lot more restraint. It seemed like often Harris was trying to be RS
Jackson (see Last Exit, Power Tools) and he just doesn't have the time
keeping while running around the kit thing down. Both Zorn and Harris
did some non-verbal vocalizations which worked well in the direction of
the ambient disc. There almost always seemed to be someone playing
outside of the context of what the group was playing, which sometimes
worked and sometimes held things back. There were a ton of solos. Most of
the pieces were long, which ran counter to my expectation. The crowd (pretty
good turnout - around 225) really responded well, calling for two encores.
I liked it, but I thought it was a little easy and less tight then I felt
like I deserved from the three of them. I was overwhelmed (and sometimes
a little put upon) by Laswell's chops - I had never seen him before. I'm
interested to hear how the shows were elsewhere.
Also it did not seem like either Laswell or Zorn were much interested in
being in the rock star mode: little stage presence, shitty interaction
with the crowd, didn't like the lights, fucked with the sound guy alot...
Oh well, I guess you can't expect your idols to be polite too.
