  25. I saw the Thieves quartet in 1993 during the month long Zorn retrospective at
  26. KF. They were pretty good, Zorn played piano, sounding rather like a
  27. non-virtuostic Bill Evans (of all things). After playing the suite from
  28. Thieves, they played some of the Masada material. The line-up was Dave
  29. Douglass- tpt, Greg Cohen -bs, Joey Baron- dm, Zorn- as, pno. This is the
  30. same as one of the Masada groups, no? (The Masada material sounded much
  31. better on the west coast, however, with Ben Goldberg, Trevor Dunn & Kenny
  32. Wolleson.) David says he has a recording of Thieves quartet, is this a
  33. bootleg, or a tape from an actual release. If it's a real thing I am sure
  34. Patrice Roussel (proussel@ichips.intel.com) will want to hear about it for
  35. his discography.

  55. know any more about it at this point.

  100. Definitely! ELEGY and KRISTALLNACHT are two singularities in Zorn's recent
  101. production. They represent his more "contemporary" side. ELEGY is definitely
  102. inspired by LE MARTEAU SANS MAITRE, by French composer Pierre Boulez -- one 
  103. of the masterpieces of serial music (from 1953). ELEGY is also an hommage to 
  104. Jean Genet's universe. The music is dark, subtle and very complex and is an 
  105. amazing vehicle in conveying Genet's litterary 's atmosphere. I am very 
  106. reluctant to music which tries to establish a bridge with other form of 
  107. artistic expression, not that I deny some successful realizations, but ... 
  108. music is music, literature is literature, etc :-). ELEGY is not an 
  109. illustration of Genet's novels/plays, it is more like the musical equivalent 
  110. of what Genet wrote. At least it the way I feel when listening at it.
  111. One of his most intriguing piece.

  113. If you are more on the Naked City/Pain Killer side, you might be desappointed,
  114. but if you are a true Zorn fanatic, and somebody who likes to keep his ears
  115. open to any inovative music, this is a must.

  117. Tzadik has the project of reissuing ELEGY next year. They are still some
  118. record stores which carry some copies of the Eva pressing (I know at least
  119. one :-).

  135. I'm sort of new to Zorn, and tend to get confused by the different
  136. projects, and indeed find it hard to identify a given CD (unless it's
  137. clearly Naked City, for example).

  171.     What's different about the ltd. edition? Is the track listing
  172. on both versions the same, and more to the point from my perspective,
  173. does the Earache (assuming of course that it's being released by them
  174. too) version have the second ambient CD.
