Partch (CRI) for the masterpiece And On The Seventh Day Pedals
Fell In Petaluma. In fact, you might want to wait a few months.

From what I understand, _The Parachute Years_ is gonna be a reissue of 3
double vinyl LPs, and it was gonna be on 3 CDs (which would mean some of
the material was going to be left off for timing constraints).  I'd think
it would fit comfortably on 4 CDs, unless the 6 CDs are going to
correspond to the slabs of vinyl.  Does anyone know if that's going to be
the case or if there's going to be extra material (and the box it's going
to come in is not gonna be a regular size box either, I guess)?

Just wondering (and hoping I'm not gonna have to pay out the butt for 6
CDs)...

Near as I can tell, the only intersection of these two artists was Jeff's
appearance on the Knitting Factory COBRA cd, which contained sections of a
number of different Cobra performances, including an all-voal one with
Jeff.

Zorn plays with the Ken Butler Trio on the second day of the Tzadik Fest at
the Knitting Factory on July 26.  Ken is a New York musical instrument
creator and musician... anyone who's visited the Knitting Factory has seen
his incredible looking creations hanging in the Front Bar and may not have
know they were all playable.

The next Masada run here will be September 25-27.

And of course he's always filling in the random holes in our schedule...

Well, I wasn't there but I would be willing to venture a guess that it was
Miya Masaoka.  An incredible musician from out in the SF Bay Area.  This
sort of cues into a forthcoming Tzadik release I'm mucho excited about:

Ben Goldberg - 'Twelve Minor'

Ben Goldberg - clarinets; Miya Masaoka - koto; India Cooke - violin;
Rob Sudduth - tenor sax; Trevor Dunn - bass; Kenny Wollesen - drums.

I've heard it roughly explained as "a New Klezmer Trio concept expanded
for sextet."  Anyone heard any more about this one?  Sounds like a
blast (admittedly, the koto might seem an odd instrument to inject into
a klezmer record, but I've been listening a lot to some early, pre-klez
Jewish instrumental music lately and after hearing their use of the
dulcimer I can definetly hear it working...).

I caught their  show in Denver in April and I'll boldly say it ranked right
up there with the
best of them.  I'd recommend both of their cds to anyone on this list.  Can
anyone
give me more info on the band members? especially the sax player (who
during the show played some of the meanest funk grooves on the keyboard
that I've ever heard).
I know he's sat in with Mad Season, but is he on any other recordings? TIA

That's strange you say that Mike, because I am ready to bet that Skerik is
the closest sax player to Zorn. In fact, with Sadhappy (the group he played
in before), I could swear it was Zorn. Also Sadhappy had Bill Frisell as
a guest. Skerik has played a lot with Wayne Horvitz and Eyvind Kang. And
to tell you the truth, Critter Buggin's music is as much at its place
on this list that any other "rock" projects from Avant/DIW/Tzadik. In
fact, I see only one reason why not talking about him/them on the list:
they have no record yet on Tzadik or Avant :-).

Where you saying that because you had some bad experience with them?

is also some connection there :-).

    Hmmm, I didn't know that. Even though it's a

The sax player is Skerik, a very exciting young musician from Seattle.

He used to play in the band Sadhappy up to 1995, I believe (there are at
least three CDs of the band with him). After that, he joined (founded?)
Critters Buggin, which is a rock band with an interesting experimental edge.

Being in Seattle, he has played a lot with Wayne Horvitz, Eyvind Kang and
also Bill Frisell.

There was even at one time a Previte/Horvitz/Skerik noisy trio that
unfortunately never got recorded.

Recently, he got some more visible job by joining Tuatara, the all-star
band with Peter Buck (REM) and members of Screaming Trees, Young Fresh
Fellows, and Luna.

You can also hear him on the last (and wonderful) Mark Eitzel record.

There is a good compilation from Seattle with Skerik all over:

Well, Sanctuary is a very interesting project, I've heard one performance
of the group, with the same instrumentation as should be at this upcoming
gig.  It's a really intense mix of free improv from some (or all) players
while other might or might not be setting up somewhat defined
backgrounds.  For instance, I can recall one portion with both trumpets
wailing and bouncing off each other, while the sampler(s) and drums layed
down this hiphop groove.  With everyone else fitting in somewhere also.
Of course, it segued out of that reasonably quickly, but I'll say that the
accompanyment for that portion seemed reasonably arranged.  I've read an
interview <members.aol.com/jazzzine> where he mentions that it's in the
spirit of 'Free Jazz' and 'Ascension', I can definetly see the connection.
Sorry I'm not yielding any more information, I'm finding this a very odd
thing to put into words.  I can also say that it's two long pieces, I
imagine he'll perform one per set (and one per CD).  I've only heard one
of them (from last years 'What Is Jazz?' fest).  So there's that.  Hope
this is somewhat useful to you.  Later on all...

all of which are produced by Bill Laswell and none of which feature John
Zorn.  There might be more, but I'd have to think about it for awhiles.

Greetings to all:

For general info, Bill frisell played in Boston at a small (approx150+) club
called Johnny D's on Monday July 7.  I was really excited for the gig and it
was great.  This show featured Frisell's Quartet lineup from last year's
nonesuch recording (Curtis Fowlkes, Eyvind Kang, Ron Miles).  Many tunes
from this recording were prominent (Tales from the far side, Stand Up, Sit
Down), and a stunningly beautiful rendition of the cd's 6th track Egg radio.
 Ron Miles' subtle trumpet melody interweaving with Frisell's solid, yet
spaced out chords always gets to me on that piece.
        Kang's rhythmic violin parts were incredible.  He used two bows, one
when he seemed to be accentuating and playing melodies, and one to just go
nuts with (this one was really shredded with hair strings flying out
everywhere).
        The quartet played 2 sets, each about an hour.  Frisell graciously
introduced everyone in the band, and from that point on, there was almost
nothing but music.  Towards the end of the second set, Frisell reintroduced
the band and joked with the audience.  After the first encore, for example,
Ron Miles walked throught the crowd to go to the bathroom, as the crowd gave
the quartet vast applause warranting the second encore.  When Miles
returned, Fowlkes and Frisell were chuckling, and Frisell explained to the
crowd that Curtis was a harsh man, telling him something to the extent of
"Fuck it, we're the Bill Frisell trio now!!!"
        Anyway, thought the group might be interested.

 Thanks for the information on the Frisell program.  This should remind
us all that jazz is meant to be heard live.  Recently, here in
Philadelphia,  I've had a chance to hear Ralph Peterson's Fo'Tet play
Monk and  Don Byron's Bug Music.  In each case the live experience added
much needed spirit to the music. Byron's personality was infectious, and
his short introduction to each tune was a pleasure to hear.  Peterson's
energy as a drummer must be experienced LIVE.  BTW, Marc Ribot's
terrific new Los Cubanos Postitos, featuring Marc, Brad Jones bass, EJ
and Bobby Rodriguez percussion played here...full of Cuban fire!

Well, at least I only missed spotting Brain on one CD that I actually own.
The track he plays on from the Axiom Funk album is originaly from the
first Praxis CD.  Also, since he plays as part of Praxis on the live track
from _Valis II_ I would not be at all suprised is he is also the drummer
on the live Praxis album which has yet to reach US shores.

Good eyes!  Indeed, Brain plays on both _Songs Of Love And Hate_ as well
as the brand new remix album _Love And Hate In Dub_ all of which makes me
feel like a bit of a fool since _Love And HAte In Dub_ has been kicking my
ass for the last few weeks.  Some truly awesome remixes that I like much
better then the album from which they came.

He is the drummer on the live Praxis CD.  He is now spending most of his
time with Primus.

I saw guitarist Brad Shepik (he spells his name  phonetically now it seems..)
and his band last night at the Gershwin Hotel, on E. 27th St in manhattan.
 The band features Skuli Sverrisson on bass, Mike Sarin on drums, Peter
Epstien on sax, and a dumbek/ percussionist whos name I forget.  It was a
nice night, so they decided to play on the roof of the hotel.  There were
only about ten people there to see them, and a few hotel guests who wandered
up.  Anyways, I thought this band was great, and would recommend checking
them out.  In the late set, Brad played an electric six string saz, an
instrument I believe of Turkish origin.  Alot of their stuff had a Middle
Eastern/ Baltic flavor to it.  They will be there every Thursday this month.
 I think most people may know Brad from Dave Douglas' Tiny Bell trio, and he
is definitely worth checking out.

I've only heard a few live recordings of Critters Buggin' and I thought they
were great!  They had members of Wayne Horvitz' Pigpen sitting in.   What
exactly is the charter for this list??
I think they are more closely linked, by sound and by personnel, to Zorn than
Soundgarden, for sure.
They have also played the Knitting Factory, so there's your "downtown NYC"
connection ;-)

Wish I coulda been there.  Frisell and Ron Miles' playing compliment each
other perfectly.  Ron also has a new release out on Grammavision (GCD
79516) featuring Frisell along with Ron's Denver based trio (I believe this
trio has played the Knitting Factory) Ron is an extraordinary musician and
human being.  I remember going to see one of Ron's groups a few years ago
in Boulder.  They played in this tiny basement of some coffee house.  To
say the least it was LOUD!  What Spy vs Spy did to Ornette tunes this group
did to Prince tunes.  If anyone on this list is from Denver, go hear him
play. The  Denver community is tremendously lucky to have such a class act.

Apparently Sony Japan finally responded to his repeated requests to
purchase back the rights to the material.  This occasionaly happens when a
huge, multinational record company (i.e. Sony) realizes that a particular
recording will probably never sell a bazillion copies and that they are
probably lucky to get anything for it at all.

Zorn should consider himself lucky - the other, infinately more popular
option is for the record company to deny all requests to use the material
and simply let it go unheard for years, decades, millenia, etc.  This is
essentially why most prolific avant-garde artists have a bunch of albums
that are considered classic yet are not available on CD (take Ornette
Coleman, whose Caravan of Dreams album _In All Languages_ was out of print
for many years up until, well, two weeks ago).

Can't the breach of contract be used in such cases? Zorn would have no
problem with us to testify that Sony did nothing to promote his music.

I guess i'm confused as well. I was also under the impression that Zorn has
had no luck in securing the rights. However, in the last digest, I noticed
this post about "FILMWORKS VII" upcoming on Tzadik. So, perhaps it's all been
sorted out??? Will this be the entire program, as was previously released in
Japan?

Breach of contract can only be an issue if there was a contract that
specified what type of promotion would be used.

But more importantly, _Cynical Hysterie Hour_ did sell out - there was no
factory stock on it at all when I obtained a copy from someone in Japan
with connections at Sony.  It was sold as the soundtrack to a cartoon, not
as a John Zorn recording, so I doubt that Zorn had any promotional
commitments from Sony on it.  And what was pressed probably sold to
children who watched the show.

That's a very good point. I keep on forgetting the origin of this record.

I also remember that somebody was successful in finding the video-CD of the
cartoon.

Filmworks VII and Cynical Hysterie would be two different releases, but =

The point is well taken, but I'm not sure that this is an accurate
description of what happened in this particular case.  Caravan of Dreams
was a tiny, Texas-based indie label which stopped making records entirely
shortly after _In All Languages_ was released.  Ornette himself presumably
wasn't in a position to get this material released until his recent deal
with Verve, and I doubt anyone else has tried.  But we can blame Columbia
for the long absence of _Skies of America_.

These are the newest releases for Avant under their 4 month old Koch
distribution agreement.  Every month Koch picks up distribution in the USA
for 4 titles, basically whatever is fairly new and then fills in the
remainder with old catalog titles.  So next month, for example, we get
three new ones and _Voyager_ to make four.  After next month, the total
number of titles you can get from Koch will be up to 24.

Any reviews on the Cake Like CD?

Jeff summed it up really well, but here's a couple of lines from the
excellent book _Tim Sweeny's Guide To Releasing Independent Records_ to
remember the next time we get frustrated as to why a big label isn't doing
a damn thing to promote the music we love :

    "...Which brings up a very, very important point : record labels,
especially big ones, are very often not concerned about the fate of
individual bands.  Their main concern is that they sell enough records
each year to make a tidy profit.  They don't particularly care if you are
one of the bands that are making those records.  To put it another way :
It is not safe to assume that your record label will do what's in your
best interest."

Seeing how quickly it went out of print, I would assume that Cynical
Hysterie Hour was a fairly low priority for Sony.  George Michael fought
sony in court using the same "no promotion" argument and lost.

That book has one good chapter which is on the evils of major labels
but then he spends the rest of the text advising labels to do
exactly what will make them have to consider the bottom line for
the rest of their existence.

not that fond of his work with MM&W, but his playing on Zorn's Chamber
Masada discs is very nice.

I have some questions on Bill Laswell related albums that I was hoping
someone could help me out on :

1/ Does anyone have the songwriting credits and line-up for the new Last
Poets album. I got a promo at work, but there's no booklet or info, save
for song titles and the major players on the album. I have my own
discography that I started a few years back, and would like the info
make it a little more complete.

2/ Does anyone have the songwriting credits for the two APC Tracks
albums as well as the first Deadline album? This info would also be
greatly appreciated.

3/ On the Axiom page, there's an upcoming soundtrack for a movie titled
"City of Industry". Is this a different movie from the recent Harvey
Keitel one? I couldn't find a Laswell connection on that soundtrack, so
I'm assuming it's different but I wanted to make sure.

    I just purchased this, and I have a couple of questions in regards
to some of the liner notes.

1)There are several references to "dream machines" created by both Gysin
and Burroughs, but I can't find any info on exactly what these are.  Does
anyone have any further info on these?

2)Gysin is credited in the notes for creating the cut up style in
literature, but it has always been my understanding that Gertrude Stein
was the first to develop it a couple of generations before Gysin (not to
mention dadaists like Tzara). Am I
missing something, or is the text just inaccurate?

According to the Knitting Factory schedule for the summer, August 12
will be the release date, or at least Douglas will be performing the
work that night.  The concert is listed as a coming out party for the
Avant CD release.  Douglas will be in town tonight with Tiny Bell Trio.
If I get a chance I'll ask him about the release date.

Check out Birdland, Sydney, Australia.  They do have a web listing.  You
can get Japanese CDs, but forget the inexpensive.  I haven't used them,
but they have an excellent reputation for good service and fair

He has done several recordings with Mark Helias on Enja: Current Set,
Desert Blue, and Attack the Future.  He is also on Bobby Previte's Music
of the Moscow Circus, where his somewhat quirky playing fits in
perfectly.  He has a release under his own name which I think is titled
Certified.

this is not entirely acccurate.

Shoei's prices for SOME items are
expensive, but not everything across
the board. for instance, the
00100 (or whatever the name of Pee Wee's
new group is) CD is listed at $15
or thereabouts in the last catalog
i received; a far cry from the
$30.99 Rasputin's (local record
store) was asking for. additionally,
JO releases are quite cheap when
buying direct from the source.
the Coa CD was $10 i believe.

where i would put in a word of
caution is that JO does not sell any
Avant titles, nor any other
similar releases. everything they
sell is either punk, noise, metal
or some unclassifiable underground
Japanese band. all great stuff, to
be sure, but...

if you're looking for titles on the
Avant, DIW, PSF, etc. Japanese labels,
i would recommend Forced Exposure
instead.

understand, it is a kind of cylinder with designs cut out of it that you
place over a bulb and rotate. When you close your eyes, the patterns induce
some sort of "trip" obtained without drugs.

        Regarding "cut ups", I can't speak to Stein, but I think that I can
speak to the Dadaists. I believe that the dadas were looking for nonsense,
or meaning to be found in nonsense. With the cutup method you actually write
the whole piece, cut it up, repaste it and publish it as a "meaningful"
work. The distinction may be fine, but it is I believe significant. And even
given that distinction, there were no dadas that I'm aware of who had a
career of books published with that method. Much of their work being
designed for performance, again perhaps a fine distinction.

Dream machines are spinning cylinders around light with slits cut into them
to create a kind of strobe effect that can affect the state of the viewer.
There's some discussion of these in a book of Gysin writings that I'll have
to look up the name of.

Stein didn't cut up any texts that I'm aware of (her process seems to be
more of an intense focus on her own response to words themselves), but
you're right that the Dada folks did (literally) cut up texts.

Any "firstness" ascribed to Gysin on this account would need to be based on
creating longer pieces created from texts selected for potentially
interesting juxtapositions &, probably, using more of a critical eye for
the work, rather than just taking anything that came out.

Might I add that Burroughs also said that cutups were a way to decode the
unconsciousness - e.g. "Cutups let you know what you might now know that
you know".

And another odd thing i found about japanese CD prices (in Tokyo, at
least) was that everything seemed to cost pretty much the same, ie: the
new Soundgarden album was as expensive (or cheap, depending on which
country you make your money in, i suppose) as, say, Zoviet France or
Naked City....

Yes, this is true.  If you look on a Japanese CD you'll see the price in
yen on the spine.  You'll pay that price no matter where you buy it.
Tokyo is loaded with shops, but discounts on recordings are unheard of.
It's also true that you will pay far less for Japanese CDs in the US
than you will in Japan, due to exchange rates.  The average CD in Tokyo,
and Japan in general, costs about $25 by current exchange rates.  Hong
Kong was better, due to less restrictive duties, but who knows now.

I had a chance to speak with Dave last night here in Philadelphia.  The
release date for Sanctuary will be August 12 here in the US.  He's very
excited about the composition, but a tour seems unlikely due to costs.
Tiny Bell Trio, by the way, did two full sets and were excellent.

(one in Dutch, the other in French) who used a Dadaist cut-up-like
technique in books, published around 1920

By the way, a Flemish commercial TV channel is using a Masada track for a
film trailer; hope Zorn sues them.

OH JOY! Yep - its finally in the racks, in my CD player - its "out" there,
at last. From Zorn's liner notes:

"A funny thing happened...MASADA was scheduled to perform at the Knitting
Factory the ten days of Hanukah - December 1996 and a week or so before
the dates I got a phone call from Micheal Dorf. Apparently Sony wanted to
rent the Knitting Factory space for a private party one night smack in the
middle of the run. Would I consider giving up one of the nights? Of course
my first response was "NO WAY - TELL THEM TO FUCK OFF", and then I
remembered this recording. If I've got something they want (this night in
December) - perhaps they'd give me something I want. Absurd, you say?
Ridiculous? Never Happen? That's what I thought, but I took a chance and
laid the deal in Micheal Dorf's lap: a night for their party of squares in
exchange for the rights to CYNICAL HYSTERIE HOUR, which had dropped out of
print six months after its 1990 release. Dorf seemed positive he could do
it - and can you believe it - he really did!"

I believe it - Birdland (birdland @magna.com.au)  has got it already if
you can't wait for its appearance your own part of the world (where ever
that might be). Its a fantastic and whimsical thing. Meantime,

so for everyone who is interested here are some of my first impressions.
First of all i`d like to say that this record in my opinion is one of the
Zorn highlights of all time.
the cd has four sections (because there are 4 cartoons in the Cynical
Hysterie Hour Series). it is about 25 min long (or short). there is all
kinds of music involved...everything from surf music to punk rock...from
nice harp tunes to weird cartoonish sounds.
yeah this is really cartoon music.
I love it!!!!!!!!
Anyway i guess this is a must have CD for everyone who is just a little
bit interested in Zorn`s work.
Some of the stuff reminded me of some music that he did with Naked City.
Track 23 has a surf solo guitar (played by bill frisell) that reminded me
a lot of some stuff from the "Radio" CD by naked City....

anyway i guess i cant really describe the music.........just buy and
enjoy!!!!!

Yep. I think the commercials (there were many) came from Weiden And Kennedy,
an agency from Portland (still need to check if they also did the Budweiser
one with the Ambitious Lovers).

this is the version he uses.  Zorn plays 3 tracks totalling under 1 minute:
The Kill/ Prison Without Walls / and Dead part 1.  Zorn describes it as
something like heavenly music that transcends the death metal genre and
belongs in the stratosphere.

the host of KCRW, the FM station originating from Santa Monica College in
Santa Monica, Ca, is in New York filming some music stuff that airs on
PBS television.

while doing the TV stuff he broadcasts live from NY for an hour on KCRW
out here in California...weekdays between 9 and noon...

Monday, July 28, he will have John Zorn in the studio and will be
interviewing him live on the air...Zorn said he is bringing a stack of
Japanese singles to entertain the lucky listening audience.

I don't know what this means for Eastcoasters, but Southern Californians,
get those cassette recorders ready with some fresh tape. The show airs
from 9-noon...i am not sure when Zorn comes on, probably at 11am.

The shows are archived on the KCRW website...so at worst it will be
available there to everyone after the fact.

Mick Harris also played on the first 2 Napalm Death cd's.  I have one
scorn tape and some painkiller.  The Napalm Death is the only other
stuff other that those 2 that I can think of.

OH, He was the drummer for Napalm, Doing 1,000 mile/hour blast beats.

to find the Dub Terrorist pages (or go to www.search.com and do a search
for Dub Terrorist).  Sorry I don't know the actual link-path, but
Hyperreal just reorganized their pages and I don't remember the exact way

Mick Harris recorded a cd with guitarist James Plotkin this year called
"Collapse"... it's an ambient ethereal type of project featuring digital

Disclaimer:  My apologies for the use of the term "dub" in the following
lines.  Obviously, Scorn is not true dub (King Tubby, Mad Prof., Lee Perry,
Scientist, Marley etc.) in any sense of the word, but my usage of the term
(instead of using "post-dub", or something even more meaningless) is simply

for descriptive purposes ...

I'll second the recommendation on ND's two discs, for fans of Painkiller
and Naked City, and add that Mick also plays drums on the new Sigillum S
record.  Also, on Scorn's debut record, "Vae Solis" (Earache 1992), which
is a mixture of early Godflesh, dubby basslines, and dark-ambient
atmospherics (nothing like Scorn post-1993) and "Colossus" (Earache 1993),
which is a mixture of the Vae Solis record, and the minimal, dark-ambient,
fractured dub experiments of recent Scorn, Mick plays some drums here & there
in amongst the drum-machine noise & programming.

Mick's got so many things going these days, it'd be hard not to write pages ...

As far as Scorn goes, the early to records (1992-93), "Vae Solis" (LP),
"Lick Forever Dog" (EP), "Lament" (7"), "Deliverance" (EP), "Colossus" (LP),
and "White Irises Blind" (EP) are roughly as described above, with the last
three efforts containing more of a low-end presence, and more of the
slowed-down hip-hop-esque beats/programming that was to come.  Scorn was a
duo for these records with Nicholas Bullen providing bass guitar, lead guitar
and vocals (screaming on the first record, more drone-like singing on
Deliverance through WIB).

The next Scorn record, "Evanescence" (Earache 1994), is where the old
Scorn was entirely left behind.  Still a duo for this outing, with the
help of James Plotkin on guitar & guitar synth (his trademark ambient style),
and Nick Garnett on Digeridoo, this album was billed as "ambient dub".
Not nearly as stark and minimal as recent Scorn, this LP is slightly
upbeat (but still dark), and has quite a tribal/world feel in places.
Drones & shifting atmospherics, typical Harris samples/noises, beats
ranging from slow to fast, along with the heavy plodding low-end and
Bullen's whispered, echoed, drone-like vocals.  No heavy guitar
dirges/riffs to be found.

Next up was "Ellipsis" (Earache/Scorn Recordings 1995) which is a remix
album that really put Scorn into the position it occupies today within
electronica/techno/d'n'b etc.  Remixes of tracks from "Evanescence" and
one from "Colossus" by the likes of Laswell, Autechre, MBM, Coil, Scanner,
and PCM.  More electronic of course, with some noisy techno sounds, and
drum 'n' bass thrown into the Scorn equation.

Bullen left Scorn follwing this (a long story unto itself) and Mick's solo
Scorn career began with "Gyral" (Earache/Scorn Recordings 1995).  Dark,
slow, brooding, and minimal, with a low-end for subwoofer freaks.  Floating
drones reminiscent of his Lull-project, stretched, reverbed & echoed sounds
(piano included), and simple, but powerful hip-hop beats/drum breaks.

Next came "Logghi Barogghi" (Earache/Scorn Recordings 1996), Mick's last
record before parting ways with Earahce (another long story), and his first
(since the backing vocals he did on Vae Solis), to use his voice as an
instrument.  Continuing on from Gyral, LB is even more sparse, but contains
a wider array of electronic effects/sounds and covers more territory.  The
sub-bass is just as low, but most of the drones & atmosphere have been pushed
further back in the mix to make way for the strong beats/breaks & vocals.  Way
more echoing, time-stretching, flanging, and reverb throughout.  Mick's voice
is also heavily processed, with a metallic tinge, and is for the most part,
unintelligible.  The speed and placement of the breaks on the record are
indicative of his love of drum'n'bass, which he never used Scorn for, but
would soon release under other guises.  Side note: He samples from two
Laswell records - Divination I & Valis I.

Mick signed to KK records (Belgium) and Invisible in the US, following his
split with Earache, and started up his own label, Possible, to release mainly
dark techstep/d'n'b outings in 1996.  Scorn released the "Leave It Out" 12"
on Possible in 1996:  four tracks, quite reminiscent of Gyral, but with the
bass being more dense, and not as low in frequency.  Then came Scorn's latest,
"Zander" (KK/Invisible 1997), which is a less minimal, heavier,
Gyral/LB-sounding effort.  Nothing much "new" with this one, but still
quality work.  Big, beefy, foundation-rattling basslines, with electronic
envelopes, and all the usual effects.  A return to instrumental pieces; no
vocals on this one.

As Mick has said (more than once), he's ready to end Scorn, and simply focus
on his billion other experimental projects/collaborations on a handful of
different labels.  Things were supposed to end with Logghi, as rumors go,
but they didn't.  Now supposedly, Scorn will release two more 12"s on
Possible
(Beat Vol. 1 & 2) and then call it quits for good, but who knows.  Also,
Scorn's reputed last live date ever which was set at the Anchorage on 6/19
in NYC, was cancelled!

Alright, now that I hope I've answered your basic Scorn questions, I could go
on and write just as much on all his other outings, but I won't cause a) I
don't have the time, and b) there's no reason to clog the Zorn list with this
stuff.  So, I'll throw his work into quick categories and then point you to

I think it was an original one. Faily mellow but with few tidbits of skronk
and Arto breathless unique voice. I was driving to work when they played it
and I could not believe it!!! Few years after I asked him (I was still
having doubts) and he confirmed it.

There was an interesting article on Weiden And Kennedy in a local (Portland,
OR) newspaper. The article was about a new campaign for Miller (the beer).
The funny thing is that they (W&K) contacted Negativland to get their music
for the commercial!!! Of course, the band refused claiming that if W&K had
any understanding of what their music stood for, they would have never
bothered asking...

Anyway, many downtown artists have worked with W&K.

Chalk this one up to freedom of the press.

Blood told me last night that Pharoah is on this, but Zorn is not.  He
hasn't done any recent recording with Zorn, although he would like to.

the best source for the art, poetry and theory of Dada is painter Robert
Motherwell's "The dada painters and poets" (Harvard U.). The book first
came out in the 50's and was a GREAT influence on John Cage, John Ashbery,
Morton Feldman and almost any experimental artist who came of age in the
50's. it was out of print for years but came back into print in thr
mid-80's. there is also john elderfield's Kurt Shwitters catalog from the
MOMA show of a decade ago (there are also recordings of shwitters
performance texts ou there as well) Don't forget marcel duchamp. tho' not
dada, his ideas have a certain correspondence. many books on him -- the
best intro is the philadelphia museum of art's catalog of the 73
retrospective (folks shoulkd go to the pma to see their permanent
collection of duchamp -- biggest in the world

Third Rail will be playing in NYC in mid-September (tentative dates are 912
and 9/13).  Based on last night's concert in San Francisco, I would highly
recommend any NY area fan of Blood, or anyone just in need of an
intraveneous injection of funk/jazz should, should make sure they hit the
NY shows.  Last night was an incredibly high energy show, with some amazing
music along the way.  Blood does no showboating, it's a band experience,
and the band is amazing.

One of the highlights was covering Portishead's "Glory Box," Amina doing
the vocals on this one.

In the "Sweet Butter Fingers" Sonny Sharrock booklet, an interview comes

discography, but he's not on it. Does anyuone know the story with that?

Finally, in the packaging for the Autonomous Zone album, they make
mention of an album called Imabari '91. Does anyone know who's on this

 Not quite! The original Napalm Death line Up was in 1982. The line up on
either of the two sides of Scum is different! They had a different bassist
(who I believe was in Godflesh), side one was recorded about one year
before the second side, or something like that. FROM ENSLAVEMENT TO
OBLITERATION is the best possible thing to get from Napalm Death, the peel
sessions are amazing as well (at least the first two sessions), and Scum
is damn good. Mentally Murdered is good, and the split seven inch with
japan's SOB is excellent.

 Yeah, I'm the resident grind freak on the list. Who do I owe tapes to?
Imoved back home and lost track of that stuff, sorry!

Anyway, Arto Linday grew up in Brazil and is a lover of Brazilian music.
He has produced/played with numerous Brazilian artists, such as:

    Caetano Veloso
    Marisa Monte
    Tom Ze
    Gal Costa
    Arnaldo Antunes
    Vinicius Cantuaria

Carlinhos Brown, I guess, is just one more of the Brazilian artists
whose music he loves.

Two years ago, I talked to Arto and he mentioned that he was the initial
producer of a Carlinhos Brown record supposed to be called TIMBALADA (on
Virgin France). At one point, the production costs went out of control and
he gave up his position as producer. According to him, the production costs of
the record had reached... 0.5 million dollars!!!

I am wondering if ALFAGAMABETIZADO is the same record or another one. I have
never heard of any record named TIMBALADA.

Because we are talking about Arto, I found many records with him on Gut (Ryuichi
Sakamoto's label).

Each Scorn album is very different, so it's not so easy to say which is
his best one.  Most hardcore Scorn fans seem to like _Vae Solis_ the best,
and it is pretty good ambient oriented stuff.  Personally I think the
earlier material is interesting as well, particularly _Colossus_ (imagine
heavy but slowed down guitars, sampling similar to Ministry, and
obsessively heavy beats).  He did a duo album not too long ago with Bill
Laswell (anybody have any comments on this?), but I've had trouble finding
it.  He also supposedly plays drums and does some sampling work on the new
Pigface album (out in August). There is a good Scorn/Mick Harris website
out there, unfortunately I don't have the adress anymore...if you post to
rec.music.industrial someone there can probably tell you.

1)In my travels on the web I ran across a Laswell site that talks about an
upcoming album of his in which he collaborates with Ornette Coleman and
William S. Burroughs, and is being released in conjunction with
Burroughs's new novel.  Does anyone have any further info on this?  Is it
out, just a plan for down the road, etc?

2)I just picked up the Splatter Trio's _Hi-Fi Junk Note_ based on the fact
that they thank Ostertag, Chang, and Pablo Picasso.  Does anyone know how
their other stuff compares to this disk, or know of anyother related
materiall?

It's been planned for a long time, but no recording has ever taken place
for it.

The disc you got combines their usual instrumentation of sax, drums and guitar/bass
(dbl neck) with live sampling and studio manipulations and other methods of
distorting their original music, hence the thank you list...

They have 4 other excellent CDs--
1. Splatter Trio (1st)
2. Anagrams
3. Splatter 3+2- Fistful of Dewey
4. Recombinance

The first two are most representative of what the group does-- mixing up free
improvisation and tight compositions. IMO Anagrams is the better of the two.
The 3rd is a live set they did wsith an extra guitarist & percussionist, and is kind of
their homage to Agharta/Pangaea period miles Davis.
The fourth is a limited edition release of a live set performed exclusively with 3 CD
players-- each player had a CD of his own solo playing, and instead of playing the
music together with instruments they did it with CDs.

Any and all of their stuff is highly recommended to Zorn fans, supposedly they met
while performing Cobra with Zorn in SF. They are kind of the stalwarts of the SF scene
at this point, and it's a position they've certainly earned.

Since we are discussing Napalm Death here I might as well throw
in some mud to make things murky. I got this email from a someone
who was very adamant about ND. I have not checked out the truth to
his statement and have not found any Crass BS detector LPs with
ND on them. So for those who want to know more about ND here is
another version of the story.......


Here's why: you guys seem to think that Napalm Death ceased
to exist with the departure of Mick, but little do you know, Mick isn't an
original member. See, before there was Scum there was Hatred Surge. It's an
old ND tape with What Can Man Do/Instinct Of Survival/Abbatoir/Control/
Sacrificed/So Sad/Caught In A Dream/Private Death/Cheswick Green(live).
The members are Nik-Vocals/Justin-Guitar/Nuts-Bass/Rat-Drums. And guess what?
It sounds far removed from even Scum. See, Napalm Death started out as a
punk band and made their debute on a Crass Bullshit Detector comp. Later they
changed their direction a little and went in on the grindcore thing. So
maybe they should have changed their name after Justin and Nik left.

    Sonny is on the record. He appears on Yesternow, and according to
Sonny, there were  other musicians  he remembers playing with on those
sessions that were also denied  credits on the album. Also keep in mind
that this 40 minute album was cobbled together from many hours of studio
recordings. You can just about hear little bits of Sonnys playing behind
McLaughlins wah-wah guitar starting about 12 min into the piece, then
about 19 min in you can quite clearly here Sonny doing his trademark
guitar wrangling, behind the uptempo funk figure.
    BTW, if anyone here is interested in trading live tapes of
Sonny/JZ/Frith..... or related stuff, drop me a line at the address
above.

Both.  Apparently Eye changed it for some reason (I can't remember why,
but it was in some interview a while ago - how's that for being specific
:-)) some time back.  You might check out the Boredoms web page to see if

Napalm Death just played here in Pittsburgh a few days ago.

I've seen them a few times, If anybody doesn't already know, Napalm
Death was the First GrindCore Band.  From back in the 80's, Metallica
was doing their thing on their first tape and Napalm Death Was
100,000,000 times heavier but really underground.  For anyone who wants
some REALLY extreme fast and hectice music, Napalm is the band for you.
ALso, similar band is Carcass (old material) Actually, the original
guitar player from Napalm is in Carcass.  Their first two albums are
very similar but a little bit more metally.  Definitely great stuff.
Check them out, their called Reak of Putrifaction and Symphonies of
sickness.

SOrry for getting a little off topic, I am another resident grindhead.

RE: Splatter Trio

To anyone who likes Splatter's Hi-Fi Junk Note, I would recommend HARDCORE
CHAMBER MUSIC by Koch-Schutz-Studer [INTAKT CD 042].  This is a Swiss trio
playing reeds, electric cello, and percussion, with heavy use of sampling.
Samples are listed and include Hendrix, Elliott Sharp, Xenakis, Napalm
Death, etc.

There is a band based in Boston called Debris which is also in this
category of music.  In fact, Debris collaborated with the Splatter Trio on
a CD of Anthony Braxton compositions, JUMP OR DIE [Music & Arts 843]. The
artists associated more directly with Splatter in the SF Bay Area are well
documented on Rastascan Records.  The Sun Ra tribute on that label has some
wonderful music by a variety of artists.

A great source for this music is Cadence Magazine.  In addition to
excellent reviews, the catalog in the center section carries all of the
music mentioned above.  A link to their website is included in this post.

recordings.  The cd's themselves looked like they came out of someone's cd
burner, and they had no cover.  A big sticker on the front announced them
as Limited Edition Bill Laswell Phat Dub #1, and #2.  Normally, they would
be playing in my home cd player right now, but I'm leaving on phish tour
for a week or so, and am cash-strapped.  They both listed for twenty bucks.
Anyone wanna tell me what they are, so I can start drooling now?

  Also, regarding some other bands of interest of people around hear, I'm
wondering what people think of the latest Melvins, or the Godflesh remix of
Songs of Love and Hate?  Personally, I think both are incredible....

   Also2, can someone post a review of the latest Mike Patton solo disk?

These aren't new or limited, really.  They are the APC Tracks discs (see
the Axiom Web Site, URL below.)  They are really worth buying, and even
though they are not limited editions, they will be hard to find after a few
months.

Is this also true for the "Ambience Dub" volumes which are on the APC label and appear
to have the same personel as the "APC Tracks" CDs? I got the "APC Tracks" CDs from
APC's web site after they were discussed on this list & they are quite cool-as is Robert
Lloyd's "Think about Brooklyn" which has Lloyd, Laswell, Sonny Sharrock, Anton Fier,
and Gregorie Garrigues in an uncharacteristically unprocessed session, by which I mean
that it sounds like a recording of a bunch of musicians playing conventional
instruments in a room, the complete opposite of Somnific Flux (not that I don't dig
that CD a lot, you know).

These are the same discs.  They were somewhat repackaged by ROIR, who is
distributing them.

The toon used in the Sega commercial was from Zorn's "Naked City", but i
can't remember which toon. It was one of the really fast hardcore sort of
numbers. I'll listen to the cassette and see if i can figure which one it
was, but it was several years ago....

Somebody asked about Herb Robertson.  I have a nice disc called
"Shades of Bud" (?) by a six-piece group called something like the
Herb Robertson Brass Ensemble (or ... Project?) on JMT.  Sorry I
can't remember many accurate details.  Arrangements of tunes by
Bud Powell and one standard indelibly associated with him.  Baron is
on drums, and the other five are brass (John Clark? Frank Lacy?)
Full details next week, I promise.

Also, Hywel has a funky live disc (also on JMT) called X-Cerpts, with
Berne and Baron and vibes (?) and bass.

actually this is all untrue--
Splatter Trio is on HIATUS...
because Dave Barrett moved to Mexico this year...
after their last live performance in Jan 97 (the Recombinance CD was
recorded in Aug 96)...

They are by no means history--they have at least one CD recorded (an
extended group project) that has yet to be released, and they nearly played
at the Texaco Festival in NY last month, but Robair had a scheduling
conflict.

I saw a used copy of the recalled Tzadik Lunatic Fring release Bible Launcher
in San Francisco yesterday at Aquarius Records. Can't recall the price, but
it definitely wasn't at the Kollector Skum level...more like $12-14.

(415-647-2272) that has excellent taste in an eclectic variety of music (something

Monday. The Yellow Room (2424 E 11th St, Oakland) has improv shows
every Tues (& Thurs). Check the local weeklies for rock club listings.

check out beanbenders while in the bay area...they have a website and an
e-mail address for info...also Hotel Utah if they are still doing
shows...these two venues feature rastascan related artists a lot...the
e-mail address at the beanbenders website is agreat source for info
regarding zorn-style music.

I got mine from Pastel Blue in england. It was only like, 18 bucks us. I
don't remember the URL right now, but do a search in yahoo for pastel
blue. It's there. They are about the cheapest place for uk imports
around.

Beanbender's continues to have great shows every Sunday, but the Dark
Circle lounge series (run by Gino Robair/Rastascan) no longer happens at
the Hotel Utah.

Pranzo Oltranzista is listed as having 13 tracks as opposed to 11, with a
very different order, with some track names that are not even on the CD, nor
anywhere in any of the subtitles, nor anywhere else on the CD insert......??

no one responded when i wrote to the address at the bottom of the page.
if its supposedly "changed" then maybe someone fixed it....i havent
looked in a couple of days..

You can also get it from Rough Trade Shop (http://www.roughtrade.com) for
about $19 US.  Also worth noting that _Asana_ was released in Europe this
week, also on Douglas Records.  I called Downtown Music Gallery last week
to order the new Ion discs and Bruce mentioned that Douglas still did not
have a distribution deal in the US, so it may be awhile before they reach
our shores.

I'm with you on the new Melvins release. They've yet to cease amazing me.
Saw them play here in Seattle a month or so ago and after seeing them maybe
15 times over the years, this show blew me all the way away. If you get a
chance to see them soon, they are in high gear and top form.

I've heard excellent things about the Godflesh remix CD but have yet to
hear it myself.

The Stranger {free seattle paper} informs me that Zony Mash is playing
August 12-17 at the OK hotel (212 Alaska Way s., Seattle} . The last night
he's playing the music of John Zorn's Torture Garden with Eyvind Kang,
Skerik, Brad Mowen, Briggen Krauss, and Mike Stone. Only 8$! Also playing
w/ Bill Frisell on the 15th.

it turns out john zorn had to cancel for reasons outside his control and
they are going to try again when douridas [sp?] returns to tape more PBS
shows in september...i'll keep you posted...
