Subject: Re: New Henry Threadgill

I picked it up Friday, and after about 6 close listenings over the
course of 3-4 days, the structure of each of the pieces became started
to become apparent to me. Not as thematically unified as 'Just the Facts
and Pass the Bucket,' but each piece a masterpiece.
It's not jazz, it's not fusion, just... beautiful music.
This man is a genius.
Nevertheless, I would hardly call this CD accessible, by most people's
listening skills.
Enjoy! Share with others!

super roots 3 is only 30 minutes long, super roots 5 is the 64 minute
piece. both are available from better mail order sevices, and even cd
now. super roots 2, the 5 minute ep given away w/ the japanese chocolate
synthesizer is out of print, but i got a copy of it from forced exposure
just a couple of months ago. jimmy said he had a few copies left, so if
you really want it, hurry up. you'll have to buy the choc synth cd as
well (they're packed together). its not listed on his web page, so e

A few random thoughts, responses and questions :
For those looking for more work by Mr. Ribot I would recommend Evan
Lurie's first album "Selling Water by the Shore" (I think thats the title) as
well as Sam Phillips wonderful "Omnipop." The Tom Waits / Lounge
Lizards & even the Elvis Costello contributions are all excellent as well.
And a thumbs up for "Shoe String Symphonies."
The new Filmworks IV is great and the new Naked City boxed set
decently priced (almost a 2 for 1 at the local shops.) I'm looking forward
to finding the new Fred Frith film series disc. Has anyone a good (or
bad) word for it?
Have y'all heard the Bill Frisell / Elvis Costello live disc? Its an import
recorded maybe a couple of years ago and they do maybe six tunes
(mostly Elvis C songs) with a quiet guitar and a whispering vocal. Yet
another great album.
Where do people put all the CDS that seem to proliferate endlessly?
Suppose there could be worse problems to debate in life.
Phew ~ Chow for now.

The European release was kind of a surprise to everyone including Bill from
what I know. The US release should happen in the next month, but depending
on who picks it up for distribution, it may take a while to get out there.
The next Ion release will be available long before Caroline starts shipping
it. I will post here, and hopefully be able to give some sources for
buying it mail order.

His own new disc on DIW can be very hard to find but is recommended, in a
traditional Ellington small band kinda style. Dave Douglas is featured
alongside a number of lesser known players.

Not to my knowledge. DIW is licensing certain things to Koch for release
domestically but has not yet taken the final step of actually signing a
distribution agreement for imports. And those two discs fell into some
kind of black hole during which DIW was NOT licensing anything to Koch, as
did David S. Ware's latest release. (I know, this doesn't make much
sense.)
I just saw the June Koch book and it included two DIW-licensed things, one
of which was the new Shannon Jackson album, "Shannon's House." This was
the disc released immediately prior to Greg and Dougie's albums. The other
was half of a four CD tribute to Monk which came out a few years ago and
will be released in two parts.
I know there are now plans for both new and old albums to be licensed, but
I wouldn't count on Dougie or Greg to be aomng them, unfortunately. I know
this sucks, but...

Ok, another question: I heard from Jamie Saft (who's got a delightful new
record on Avant that you should all check out) that Avant will soon be
getting a reasonably comprehensive U.S. distribution deal with Koch. Is
this reasonably correct?
And something else that's been bugging me: Is there any connection
between DIW and Avant? I was under the impression that "Way Low" and
"Minor Swing" were on the former while they're actually on the latter, and
vice-versa for a couple other records. Is my befuddlement founded on
anything or am I just hopelessly confused?

It started in April with four releases, then there were four more in May
and there are four more in June. Mostly back catalog but also Derek
Bailey/DJ Ninj, Dim Sum Clip Job, Smarnamisa - Resia Valley Music, and Duck
Baker. They'll continue to roll out four old ones per month and presumably
scatter some new ones as they become available. I second the notion for
Saft/Vu.

"Way Low" and "Minor Swing" are both on DIW. There is a connection between
DIW and Avant having to do with production and in many cases distribution
(although clearly not in the U.S. any more). The difference between DIW
and Avant is that Zorn directs Avant, not DIW. I guess there have been
cases where Zorn has done things that ended up on DIW (Masada obviously)
and there are some things that would seem to be Zorn projects but may not
have been (Arcana, which is actually a Laswell project I guess; Marc
Ribot's latest, etc).
I'm talking a lot but isn't it obvious by now that I really don't have a
clue how most of this works? :-) No one knows but Zorn and his cabal of
coworkers, the Gnomes of Zurich, none of whom are whispering in my ear late
at night anymore (you know who you are)... Now *Patrice* they're still
talking to, maybe.

The Dougie Bowne album 'One Way Elevator' is on Avant. It's a trio album
with Bowne on drums, John Medeski on piano and Fred Hopkins on bass.
It's quite jazzy and very cool. I have an cassette of it that I got a
while ago, long before it was released. It's sort of short but well
worth it... especially those who want to hear Medeski playing piano. If
you get this album and enjoy it then pick up Medeski, Martin & Woods's
first album on Accurate called 'Notes From The Underground'. You'll like
it. See ya!

I'm confused. All three of these records (plus the Shannon Jackson record
mentioned later in Steve's post) showed up at my local store about a month
ago. I thought they were being distributed by Koch. Who is distributing
them, then, and why are they so much easier to find in Pittsburgh than

hey now,
my friend Thurston Hunger is producing a
Mayhem special this sunday (5-11) on KFJC
89.7 FM exploring John Zorn's Tzadik label. i
will be sitting in as a guest, adding tidbits
and general banter when appropriate. we will
be playing tracks from nearly every release
in all of the different series (Composer,
Radical Jewish Culture, New Japan, Archival,
Lunatic Fringe, Film Music) with some
discussion about Zorn and Tzadik, as well as
Avant and DIW.
the show runs from 11pm to 2am PDT, a funky
timeslot i know, but... if you own a VCR,
hook it up to your receiver and using the
timer record the show while you sleep.
(clever, eh?). this show will be part one.
part two airs the following sunday (5-18),
again from 11pm to 2am.
for those of you not within range of the
station's broadcast bandwidth, you can listen
in on the Whirled Wide Web at www.kfjc.org.

It's a Cobra recording, done in Tokyo with all Japanese musicians. It's
actually my favorite recorded Cobra, a piece which can be lots of fun to
see performed but I feel does not translate well to recording. Tokyo Ops
features a mix of traditional Japanese musicians and noise-types, and just
the juxtapostion of the totally sublime and delicate music with raging
guitar noise is pretty fantastic.

Czech President Vaclav Havel and U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright
Visit the Knitting Factory
NEW YORK - The Knitting Factory in New York City is always ready for
anything when John Zorn plays. But Zorn's Chamber Masada found some most
unusual guests in the audience for the second set on Thursday night, May
15. Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson played host to Czech Republic president
Vaclav Havel and his new wife and U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright
and their entourage.
Havel, in town for talks that may bring the Eastern Block into NATO,
contacted Lou Reed prior to his visit to arrange a bit of sightseeing and
clubhopping during his New York sojourn. Reed, who has been seen numerous
times recently at the Knitting Factory as both performer and spectator,
contacted Knitting Factory founder Michael Dorf to arrange a special
reception for Havel. Dorf let John Zorn know what would be happening in
advance, and plans were made. The Knitting Factory was crawling with
secret service before long, and the best was yet to come...
Little did anyone know that Havel and his wife, escorted by Reed and Laurie
Anderson, would also invite Secretary of State Madeline Albright, holder of
the third highest office in the country. Ms. Albright and Havel
immediately engaged in animated conversation, whereupon Zorn, from the
stage, peered up to the balcony and said, "You up there, shut the f**k up,
listen to the music!" whereupon conversation did in fact cease.
Needless to say an international incident did not occur. Everyone reported
having a terrific time and enjoyed the music greatly. Even Zorn knew it
had been an historic occasion, and gave Dorf a wink on his way out the
door.

Hi,
Unnh, had the happy good fortune to last week pick up a copy of a record
by Gershon Kingsley, "Mozart After Dark". Kingsley is known perhaps to
some of you as half of the paragon of maniacal excellence that recorded
"The In Sound From Way Out", inna 'Sixties. Anyways, "Mozart..." is a
great and strange thing: wierd, mock-jazz derangements of
Mozart tunes; with scat-style arias, winds by escapees of the Vienna State
Opera Symphony, the Jazz Rhythm Gruppe (was this Franz Kogelmann's
combo?...anyone?), and Kingsley himself arranging, conducting and bashing at a harpsichord. Some track titles: "Figaro Flip", "Samba Papageno",
a harpsichord. Some track titles: "Figaro Flip", "Samba Papageno", "Swing
A La Turca", "Hold My Hand, Giovanni"... I dunno; maybe some kinda
precusor to Mars' "John Gavanti" (well: in a like spirit, at least).
And then there's Nat Hentoff's liner notes, which say the reason Kingsley
was in Vienna, was to record a disc of Yiddish Theatre Music for the
Vanguard label. Given Kingsley's singular, warped genius for arranging, I
imagine this would be a helluva thing. Does anyone out there on the list
have a copy, or know anything else about this Kingsley character?
Cheers,
Jim k

haven't fully digested all 3 discs yet, I must confess that much of it
leaves me cold. It strikes that portions of the music are recorded rather
poorly (with Wertico's double-bass work, terrificly overdone anyway,
being way too up front, and Bailey himself often lost in the mix). The
shorter excerpts are generally more successful than the hour-long
improvisation, at least to my ears. But for much of the time, Metheny and
Wertico seem enthusiastic (perhaps overly so) but unable to harmonize
with Bailey's conception (and all its subtleties).
If anyone has opposing interpretations, I'd love to hear them. And I
certainly think much of the music is solid despite my reservations (hats
off to Metheny for even attempting this, I suppose; it shows that "Song
X" wasn't a total fluke). And hey Steve Smith, any insights into the
process of selection here?

i listened to the whole thing today, and my first impressions ran a bit
contrary to these (but not entirely). i felt like metheny really pushes
bailey over the top, and i found the hour long live disc (cd 1) to be
mesmerizing. metheny has a particularly nasty tone throughout, which i
found delightful. and i usually HATE metheny-- can't find anything
redeemable about that shit he's been pumping out for the past 20 years,
with (of course) the exception of the record with ornette and the solo gtr
disc (which i usually find listenable). on the quieter acoustic(-ish)
numbers metheny seems particularly lost, which surprised me-- i
thought that this would be his angle into bailey's world, but he's much
more convincing on the over the top stuff. i haven't paid enough attention to
the drumming to comment-- beyond saying there's nothing outrageous
going on, good or bad.
overall, i'd say if you like bailey's noisier stuff then check it out. if you're
more interested in bailey's introspective side, steer clear. if you're
interested in pat metheny.... buy it, say how you can't believe he could
make such garbage and then try and return it.

I came across a copy of the soundtrack to the musical "Doonesbury" and was
suprised to see that a "Mark Ribot" plays guitar and banjo on it. I had
little desire to spin this platter (12" LP vinyl on MCA), but thought this
would be an amusing tidbit for completists and discographers.
Myself, I'm half-way through the Bailey/Metheny monster and must agree to
being dissapointed with how energy oriented it is (the first CD in
particular). I guess I just haven't been keeping up with Derek's head-I
dig him solo, with Kaiser, and with Braxton-the Arcana and Ruins CDs
haven't really tickled my brain.
Tangentially, the new Guitar Player mag has a nice Japanese noise guitar
article and mentions an upcoming Keiji Haino/Derek Bailey duo. Not my
thang, but those of you who dig the Japanese skronk should check out the
mag even if you don't strum.

13 Ghosts is a duet featuring the amazing young British reeds player Alex
Ward (previously heard on the Incus release "Ya Boo, Reel & Rumble") and an
electronics guy whose name unfortunately escapes me. Half the new disc
features Derek Bailey and half features Thurston Moore; the two guitarists
don't play together. I've heard the Bailey half and found it quite good,
and I've heard from folks I trust that the Moore half is very good as well.

Yep, they're out here too (Patrice, you can finally get your copy of East

Bacharach tribute - very good, just wish I was familiar with the original

I haven't heard it on CD, but I've heard many of the pieces. The music was
written for choreographers, mostly, if not entirely, in the Seattle area.
Most of it's good, more like the solo things from the first couple of
Dossier discs, rather than any of his ensemble projects. It's not like
techno-dance or anything like that.
Patrice, who's closer to the label (at least geographically), probably has
more to say on the subject.

I just got it the other night (thanks Patrice!). It's almost all Horvitz,
Ed Pias plays percussion on 2 pieces, but the rest is Wayne on keys,
samples and harmonica. It reminds me the most of the his Dinner at Eight
record on Dossier, some cuts of which appeared on This New Generation. It's
a very pleasant and enjoyable record, with some great melodies, nothing
that expands the definition of modern music, but very listenable without
being trite. I think it's Wayne's best record since Miracle Mile.

No, it's a guy I haven't heard of before named Switch (real name Benjamin
Herve). Also, I would recommend their first record on Scatter (Giganti
Reptilicus Destructo Beam) over the Bailey/Moore record which is a little
disappointing given the personnel.
Anyone else go to the recently concluded Victoriaville festival? The
highlight for me was seeing Fushitsusha in a small room and then interviewing
them in their hotel room around 3 AM. The whole thing seemed like a fever
dream. Other highlights were Francois Houle, Gianni Gebbia, Phil Minton's
quartet, etc. I highly recommend going to this festival at least once; not
everything is amazing but it's all at least interesting and it's quite the
experience to be somewhere where a way to strike up casual conversations is
to discuss Evan Parker's discography.
The new Ground Zero record is amazing , by the way. It's called Consume Red
and is basically a jam around a groove provided by sampling Korean hojok
player Kim Suk Chul. Pretty great stuff.

Neither, I think. It's someone who goes by the name of "Switch" -- I just
did my homework like a good little camper and checked it out on the
European Free Improvisation homepage, which is the Net's best resource for
information on Bailey, Evan Parker, Tony Oxley and the like. Peter Stubley

Patrice is correct, of course. I saved that message from some months ago
so that anytime folks requested the Screwgun info I could forward it
without much effort. Unfortunately, I didn't look very closely, or I would
have caught that very error. "Unwound" is now in most large stores like
Tower and HMV thanks to a distributor on the west coast called FTC. Forced
Exposure and North Country take care of all the indie stores. So it's
pretty common that you'll see it in stores now, and all subsequent releases
from Screwgun will be there too.
But on the other hand if you buy it at Tower there's a sticker applied
directly to the cardboard package and you'll pay $39 plus tax, with no
extra money going to Tim, as opposed to $32 by mailorder, almost all of
which goes to Tim. So that's your choice.

"New Releases Bear Stamp Of Master Producer Laswell"
Jazz Etc. by Lloyd Sachs
As a producer of Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Herbie Hancock
during the mid-'80s, Bill Laswell could have ridden the commercial gravy
train and continued as one of the go-to guys in the studio. But the
compromises and time-wasting he had to endure got to him.
"After experimenting with that way of working," he said, "I
decided to move as far away from it as I could."
Having come to prominence with two "no wave" rock collectives in
New York - Material and the Golden Palominos - Laswell formed Last Exit, a
scorching band combining free-jazz and avant-garde rock. He also founded
the Axiom label, whose artists included Exiteers Sonny Sharrock and Ronald
Shannon Jackson.
Countless cutting-edge projects later, he finds himself in the
agreeable place of being able to work for labels small and large, on
projects ranging from an avant opera and his four-turntable band Praxis,
to strong new albums by Henry Threadgill and James Blood Ulmer.
To these ears, "Where's Your Cup?" (Columbia) is Threadgill's best
effort since Too Much Sugar For A Dime," his electric collaboration with
Laswell. Leading a new quintet, Make A Move, the alto saxist/flutist
moves in yet another new direction on his mission to meld jazz, classical
music and a gamut of world sounds ranging from Latin to Indian.
Ulmer, celebrated for his shattering attack on guitar - and
sometimes lamented for his rawboned vocals - applies a light touch to
"South Delta Space Age" (Antilles). He leads Third Rail, a genre-mixing
superband including Laswell, P-Funk keyboardist Bernie Worrell, drummer
Ziggy Modeliste of New Orleans' Meters and gospel-driven singer/organist
Amina Claudine Myers.
With their earthy tones and edgy, offbeat texture, Threadgill
and Ulmer have proven difficult to record. But not for Laswell, who
easily mastered the tricky bottom end of Threadgill's two-tuba, two-guitar
band, Very Very Circus. "People overlooked the fact that he was using the
tuba as a bass," he said. "You had to make it sound large and clear or
else lose it in the mud."
With Make A Move, a band of meditative intensity and soaring
power featuring Tony Cedras on accordion and Brandon Ross on electric and
classical-style guitar, Laswell found the going easy.
"With Henry, you have to stay focused on the music, really listen
and work kind of quickly because it can move so suddenly," he said. "You
have to ready to go where it does. But I like his writing, so that was no
big deal."
With Ulmer, he put on his producer's hat before entering the
studio. "I prodded Blood into playing in more of a pop vein," said
Laswell, who played with him in a 1990 power trio that anticipated Third
Rail. "Though he has aquired other information, he is inherently a rock
musician."
"I've seen him play in a blues-oriented, almost folk-feeling vein.
Those, to me, are the elements to bring out in him."
Built on glowingly nuanced funk grooves, "South Delta Space Age"
boasts catchy pop hooks, blues licks, streams of neo-psychedelia, and
hip-hop, voiced through Ulmer's half-smiling cover of Schooly D's
"Dusted."
Laswell is sometimes charged with being too hands-on in the
studio, asserting his booming sonic vision at the cost of losing the voice
of the artist. He'll admit to taking over "when that's necessary" - and
when artists are in need of a personality infusion.
With Threadgill and Ulmer, that will never be the case, though
typically, they are hardly rewarded for their individuality. "Where's
Your Cup?" is another underpromoted item by a label that seems to have
signed the acclaimed artist for the prestige he brings them. "South Delta
Space Age," released in Jpan in 1995, sat on the import shelf until
recently.
No surprises here for the producer. "Corporations don't like
innovation," said Laswell. "It's too difficult for them to relate."
There's obviously a bit of misinformation in the above article (how Praxis
got confused with the Invisible Scratch Pickles is beyond my best guess)
but just in case some of this might be true...
1) Did Laswell work with Bowie?
2) What's this "avant opera"
3) Did Laswell play in a power trio with Ulmer? Any recordings?
Thanks,
Paul

Any info on the album _Ordinary Day_ credited to Jonas and Niels Hellborg
along with Bill Laswell and Peter Brotzmann? Label unknown, but possibly
MP though that could definately be an abbreviation.

The Invisible Scratch Pickles have been the percussion unit for Praxis at
some live shows.

No. Probably confusion with someone else.

It's a thing being done with Karl Berger. It will probably be released on
Douglas.

Yes. Yes. Unfortunately, the recording was available briefly in Japan
about six years ago and there are very few copies. Although I am sure
Laswell must have one, it was not at Greenpoint (which is now defunct), and
it isn't in his office.

OK, now that makes sense. I guess the part about the "guitar player who
wears a KFC bucket on his head" musta have been edited out by someone at
the newspaper :)

Geez...for someone who has quite a reputation, Laswell has done some
amazingly hard to get things :(

You might consider the augmented trio on Ulmer's "America, Do You Remember
the Love?" (mid 1980s Blue Note) to fit that bill as well... Ulmer,
Laswell, Shannon Jackson, plus sometimes second guitarist Nicky Skopelitis
and vocalists the Fowler Brothers.

I don't think this is on CD. It would be really nice if it was, since I
lost my vinyl copy.

What about Ulmer's "America: Do you Remember the Love", on Blue Note, 1987?
It's credited to Ulmer, Laswell and Ronald Shannon Jackson. Nicky
Skopelitis is on a couple of cuts, but it seems to be mostly the trio. Not
my favorite Ulmer record, though.

I'd warn anyone against running out and getting this one for the allstar
cast. While it's not awful, it's very, very disappointing given the
caliber of players involved.

Subject: Upcoming Laswell Releases - Listening Impressions
Date: 30 May 1997 16:40:11 -0700
Here are a few upcoming Laswell things I have now heard.
Miles Davis: _Panthalassa - The Music of Miles Davis 1969-1974_. I was
originally told that this would be an "ambient dub" remix, but it isn't.
Instead, it is remixed in the original spirit with an emphasis on some of
the spacier and funkier aspects, and some ambient stuff linking together
different sections. Mixes are very clean with the rhythm tracks more
forward. This is in spirit close to last year's Pharoah Sanders' CD.
Release scheduled for sometime later this year on Sony. Track Listing:
1) In a Silent Way: sections of "In a Silent Way" and "Shhh/Peaceful" from
_In a Silent Way_
2) On the Corner: "Black Satin" from _On the Corner_ followed by two
unreleased jams from the same recording session
3) Rated X: "Rated X" and "Billy Preston" from _Get Up With It_
4) He Loved Him Madly: From _Get Up With It_
Nicky Skopelitis and Raoul Bjorkenheim: _Revelator_. This collaboration
between two guitarists doesn't fit any category. Some of it is ambient
(almost new agey), some of it is very Middle Eastern, there is tabla
through some of the tracks, and it is generally laid back although some of
the guitar solos start to kick. Coming out on Douglas Records sometime.
Track Listing, tentative names:
1) Sacrament; 2) Epiphany; 3) Fresh Meat & Roses; 4) Right as Rain
Bob Marley: _Devotional Mix Translation_. Ambient dub remixes of Bob Marley
tracks from the original masters. Includes classic tracks such as No Woman
No Cry, Them Belly Full, Rebel Music, Exodus, and more. Includes classic
tracks such as No Woman No Cry, Them Belly Full, Rebel Music, Exodus, and
more. This is really eerie, listening to Marley's music without Marley,
and very nicely done. Closer to traditional dub than much of what is
called dub this day. Coming on Island, probably in September.
Bernie Worrell: _Free Agent - A Spaced Odyssey_. This one is already out
in Japan, but it's on Polystar which means US distribution is miserable.
"Spaced Odyssey" is a fair description, this is funky stuff, occasionally
even African influenced, with a lot of ambient overtones. With Hamid
Drake, Aiyb Dieng, Dominic Kanza, Buckethead, Bill Laswell, Jean Pierre
Sluys. This is produced by Bernie, with mix and additional production by
Bill.
There's also the live Praxis coming out on Douglas which is Praxis +
turntables and has some great moments, but I think I have a pre-mix DAT so
I'm not sure what it sounds like in final release. This is out in Europe,
but there is no distribution deal in the US. On Douglas.

This is fuckin' amazing. Pushing the bottom out front really changes it,
probably a lot closer to what it sounded like in the studio rather than
Columbia's lame mixes. Some really ugly sounds, especially from the
guitar, pop out beautifully, and there is some nifty synth texturing over
the top that Bill may have added.
If I can get legal clearance, I will play this on the Ann Arbor show on
KFJC, SF Bay Area, in July.
>Bernie Worrell: _Free Agent - A Spaced Odyssey_.
If, like me, you thought Bernie's last few solo releases were lacking
something, this one fixes all that. And Buckethead completely tears up the
two tracks he appears on. Funky, noisy, all that shit. Hope someone in
the US picks this up, because Polystar stuff disappears before it hits the
shores. Eurodwellers might be luckier, Polystar does show up there.
