It's due out November 8th. Check the Smells Like website for more info (well not much more). ICE says it's supposed to have a CDROM-accessible video of one performance but that's not mentioned on the site. Anyway, these seem more post-neoclassicist to me.

well. i just got into the miles stuff again. all those cds have been
doing nothing much but collecting dust for too long... out to lunch i
already have. quite like it, but i find it a little bit demanding to

might check that out some time, too!

>other gain by an illegal use of Bill Dixon's name and music (BILL >DIXON is trademarked name and cannot be used for the sale or the >promotion of any commodity without the explicit authorization of Bill >Dixon) ignoring and bypassing all forms of decency and respect
For anybody who cares, Dixon is a bit off on this: Having a personal name trademarked doesn't mean the owner (Bill Dixon Inc in this case) gets to approve everything bearing that name. If this CD is a legal release then consent isn't required, though the uneasy match between trademark and copyright law means there's probably enough to argue the case into court. As to whether the CD is legally released that will depend on who owns the copyright and what rights were granted to Cadence/CIMP; it could easily be perfectly legit and in no sense a bootleg and still be "unauthorized" by Dixon. None of this touches on the moral issues & it's pretty clear that there's some story behind this we may never know.
While there's usually a fair amount of talk about Uri Caine on this list, I have seen little (if any mention) of this release. What do y'all think of it?
>has made a deal with Tower Records to create an "Avant Garde" >section. I don't
>know the details (all stores? who decides what goes in? when does/did
The Atlanta store has had such a section for about three years, formerly way back in the corner behing "local music" but now up front in the corner behind some gift items. The promotional aspect seemed promising, especially pulling together albums that would otherwise be scattered through the store, but the drawback was that Cecil Taylor and Peter Brotzmann among others were removed from the jazz section though Cage and Feldman remained in classical. One problem is that Tower doesn't (or at least hasn't, maybe it's changed in the past year or two) completely use centralized buying so that each store is mostly responsible for its own inventory. One result is that the Atlanta store's jazz stock has been spotty for the past few years and the formerly extensive magazine selection is now pretty thin. And the cut-outs completely vanished. It's nice to see Incus or Avant releases in a store but at $5-6 above Cadence/Wayside prices there's not much incentive to buy there.
