Your points are all salient. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the people
who are still around from the pre-Ruth Underwood era have major-league axes
to grind, and several of them see themselves at the heart of the action. I
have a letter here from Ray Collins that says in no uncertain terms that
whatever he says about "Dead Zappa" (his name for him) ain't gonna be good.
Beefheart has batted fr both sides of the plate, but, last I heard, he's not
in the best shape and has eschewed giving interviews.
Motorhead would be fantastic to talk to, because he's in good condition and
was there before the beginning. He's actually a highway patrol cop now.
So many former bandmembers have sued FZ and his estate that I fear accurate
recollection is beyond our grasp at this point.
As for Gail's involvement, she's not exactly running around authorizing all
things FZ. I can undertand this in the case of Nigey Lennon's book, but
not, say, Greg Russo's. And she has apparently not been really easy to deal
with when various ensembles have approached her about performing some of
FZ's concert music. The wealth of information and memorabilia of which she
has total control is staggering, but the chances that she'll loosen her
grasp on the stuff... It don't look good. For instance, it has been about 2
yrs since the "impending release" of the ROXY &ELSEWHERE movie, but there's
no movie out nor does it look like there will be soon. And the second
Ensemble Moderne/FZ CD is so vague in its availability that I found the best
way to get it is call 'em up, announce that you'll be in the neighborhood,
then drop by Zappa Records and pay cash.
In the midst of all these conflicts, I;d say your chances of getting a
really good, balanced book are in league with those of hell-bound snowballs.

you know, i've often wondered the same thing, why most people won't ask people directly. so i decided that i would start doing so, when i began to queer-identify myself, also. rawk. i'd gladly walk up to zorn or any other famous person on the street and say "so what's yr deal, are you gay or what?" ;)
love,
k8.
p.s. - the OLSON twins? that's close enough to gay... or pedophilia... <shudder> and both of them, or just mary-kate, or just ashley?? now i'm curious.

Actually this is a pretty common thing. I have friends and just regular
folk that have a thing for the Olson twins now that they are getting a
little more mature and being marketed as "sexy." I'm surprised that
Zorn is as conventional in his lust/obsession, but oh well. I think for
people who have that kind of affection for the Olson twins, it's both of
them at the same time. It's sick, I know.

I thought that Zorn's got a thing for young Asian girls.

Also, I did not know there WAS a men's room at Tonic.

To make this post musically relevent, does anyone know anything about Zorn's
