  42. glad to see some reaction to the article. As for getting charged up, there's 
  43. prolly lotsa room fer analysis of the reasons why...personally, i feel we 
  44. should try to make better peace with the inevitable intersections of human 
  45. activity that were once less distinguishable, like 
  46. science/music/religion/art/politics. i see similiar revulsion at the 
  47. proto-science of sociobiology, given it's non-scientific cooptation by 19th, 
  48. 20th and now? 21st century extremist politics. eventually science will be 
  49. turned to larger questions that offend, and whether we becomes androids as a 
  50. result is largely up to us individually....

  52. speaking of floating (not quite flying) fur, am I the only person pissed 
  53. that Laswell canceled his appearance at friday's Tonic benefit (he was the 
  54. ostensible headliner)? I mean, aside from that thing with jah wobble, 
  55. Laswell has canceled every gig he's booked in nyc for like the last year. 
  56. i'm as indulgent as anyone of my fave artists foibles, but c'mon, this shit 
  57. is pretty disrespectful already!

  78. Semi-interesting article, but why must we have
  79. scientists figure out how music affects us when we
  80. already know?  Maybe if they can explain every
  81. feeling, we won't have to really feel anything- we can
  82. just look it up in some manual like a damn android.
  83. It's not like they found out that music kills brain
  84. cells- then we'd be surprised (although they would
  85. feel vindicated in Afghanistan apparently).  It
  86. reminds me of the studies where it was suggested that
  87. students who played music were better at math.
  88. Because that's why I got into music- to improve my
  89. math scores.

  91. Maybe they can explain how sarcasm affects the brain.

  130. I was not around for most of the original "issues" of
  131. a lot of classic records so I get rather frustrated
  132. about their unavailability.  Some of the best stuff
  133. I've heard from Brotzmann I got off Napster from some
  134. kind soul/souls who had digitized some of the B/Van
  135. Hove/Bennink LPs (Balls, Tschus, etc).  And yet there
  136. is a CD re-issue of Nipples which doesn't totally turn
  137. my crank (or twist my nipples!).  But, I'd tend to
  138. think reissues can often do better than the original
  139. releases because they are now more easily put into
  140. "historical perspective".  Very helpful in hyping up
  141. the album, plus people tend to be more intrigued about
  142. certain things after some authority, in this case
  143. maybe only the test of time, confirms its relevance.
  144.  
  145. But, "Balls" would make a nice reissue companion for
  146. Nipples so I'm hopeful.  I have to speak from a
  147. perspective of a Brotzmann fan, because it's what I
  148. know best, but I'm sure it's frustrating for everyone
  149. interested in this kind of thing, especially us young
  150. ones who never even got a chance to hear the LPs.  :~(

  430. One of my favourites is "five facings": duo's of Steve Lacy with five
  431. different pianists (Marilyn Crispell, Misha Mengelberg, Ulrich Gumpert, Fred
  432. Van Hove and Vladimir Miller). Minimalistic Steve at his best, very
  433. beautiful! As far as his solo work goes, try one of his Monk recordings (I
  434. didn't hear "Sand" on Tzadik).

  549. I used to be a big Lacy freak until I burned out a few years ago.  I prefer 
  550. his art songs to the rest of his output, but it's all very good.  My 
  551. favorite art song discs are Packet (New Albion), which features Frederic 
  552. Rzewski!, and Songs (hatART), but you can't go wrong with The Way (hatART), 
  553. Futurities (hatART), Vespers (SoulNote), and The Cry (SoulNote).  The albums 
  554. on RCA/Novus aren't as good but are still pleasant.  Stay away from the Miro 
  555. Foundation disc.

  557. Solo disc: I haven't heard many, but I can highly recommend Remains 
  558. (hatART).  More Monk (Soul Note) is good but nothing special.
  559.  
  560. Monk: I'll second the Five Facings disc on FMP.  Also the duo discs on 
  561. hatART w/Mal Waldron are good.  I hear We See is supposed to be excellent.  
  562. You might want to wait for the hatOLOGY reissue.
