This short comment is very suggestive; could you
elaborate? I realize I might be asking for too much,
since the ineffable qualities might be what led you to
choose that analogy, but I'm curious...why 'sacred
music'? I can see the point about Spike Jones, maybe
you mean that Butcher transcends 'mere' technique,
that something completely Other creeps out of all that
practiced transgression, something, well,
_improvised_. Of course, I'm reading all this into
your review. Nice review, BTW, in case I'm not being
clear...

Thank goodness for listserv digest format ; )
All the soundtracks (3 full length released, I believe) that Evan Lurie =
did for Benigni's films are wonderful=20
I enjoy the End of Violence sndtrk (actually don't have the separate Ry =
Cooder version - any recommendations?) very much, including the Bono/Sinead=
track. Is there enough music from the frisell/cohen ...et al line up to =
warrant snapping it up? I'm wearing out Blues Dream...
happy listening

Hey Folks,
There was an email loop happening yesterday on xmission.com
on the zorn-list. Duh. ;)
It ended up overloading the server machine that runs xmissions
mailing lists, causing them to have to reboot the hung machine.
(the zorn-list is SO powerful :)
Hopefully, this fixed the problem. If you only get this
test message once, then feel free to resume discussions.
Speaking of, since the server got overloaded some messages
sent last night might be lost, so you will need to resend
them (except for you Hugo...just kidding).

I meant it more in a technical way. On the one hand, even though he used the
instruments in outrageously nontraditional ways, the performance drew very
little attention to him, and a lot of attention to the music and sound. And
more specifically, his technique reminded me of the sacred music in various
monastic traditions in which the practitioners learn how to control the
vibrations of different parts of their anatomy (jaw, vocal chords, etc.) as
well as the interactions among the overtones to create very complex
soundscapes even when chanting solo. Butcher is a master at creating split
tones and other simultaneous sounds with his extended techniques while
consciously playing around with the harmonics thus created. Sometimes it
sounded like he was a quartet (and not 4 saxophones), yet again, it was all
very beautiful and well crafted, not just a show of technique.

I don't want to push this too OT, but this seems
rather close to list interest: I'm reminded of
comments of Anthony Braxton's (to G. Locke, IIRC)
about Heldegaard of Bingen's (sic) music allowing for
some measure of improvisation and freedom in a singing
body, and here I mean "body of people", whether a
congregation or choir I cannot remember. That, in
turn brings me to the idea of a composition that
allows, no, requires creative participation; this
could be seen as a chance element, but not really, if
you work like Zorn or Ellington and martial the forces
of individuals you know and trust (to surprise you,
and not just due their proximity to one another). All
this said: could you furnish some examples of said
monastic traditions? Are there recordings or writings
that would be useful for learning about them?
