  291. i'm terrible at describing music, so I will simply say that this is a great 
  292. album and the playing is excellent--one of my favorite releases from last 
  293. year.  IMO, it's also better than 'Tao-Njia' (1996) and 'Golden Hearts 
  294. Remembrance' ('97), although both of them are also worth picking up.  'Yo 
  295. Miles!' is an acquired taste--namely that you dig "electric" Miles--and a 
  296. very long album at almost 160 minutes (although in sum 8 hours was recorded, 
  297. according to Nels Cline).  I just ordered his solo album 'Kulture Jazz' which 
  298. i'm looking forward to, and still haven't heard 'Condor, Autumn Wind' ('98), 
  299. 'Light Upon Light' ('99) or 'Reflectativity' (2000), the last two on Tzadik.  
  300. I'm glad Leo has been (relatively) well-recorded in the last few years, for 
  301. he's a major talent.

  372. recordings come out in the last few years than he has had since the demise 
  373. of his Kabell label.

  375. The Golden Quartet is one of those rare instances where the music actually 
  376. lives up to its potential. Davis plays with all the energy and passion of 
  377. his great India Navigation LPs and this is probably the best recorded 
  378. playing of DeJohnette in a long while. (None of the "world music" noodling 
  379. he has fallen into as of late.) Smith is pushed in intriguing ways in this 
  380. setting. His music is still shaped by his approach to compositional space, 
  381. but there is a  stronger feeling of propulsive drive that kicks things 
  382. along. (I haven't heard the new Matt Shipp with Smith yet, but I expect that 
  383. the general feeling is somewhat similar.)

  385. I would, also recommend "Reflectativity". The trio with Davis and Favors has 
  386. a markedly different feel than the Quartet. Here, the improvisation is all 
  387. about space and the open interaction of the three voices. It is not quite as 
  388. good as the initial version of this piece on Kabell, but is certainly worth 
  389. checking out.

  593. The Golden Quartet was one of my first choices for
  594. that 2000 top ten we did.
  595.  
  596. It was some of the most wonderful discoverings I made
  597. during the last months. 
  598. Their Tzadik release is really a good listening that
  599. mixes "freer" stuff with quiet compositions, specially
  600. that dedicated to Leo's wife -I don't remember the
  601. title but it's the second tune. 
  602. Smith's playing can be really soft and delicate to
  603. turn into amazing fireworks just in seconds. 
  604. The themes usually develop as soloing improv
  605. rounds,but don't be scared, nothing is about
  606. virtuosism.

  653. I just got Zorn's The Gift and after repeated
  654. listenings I must firmly state my certain
  655. disappointment.

  657. As someone said before, no surprises came out of my CD
  658. player except for certain nice moments, like the last
  659. surfy theme and maybe that with Patton on "vocals".
  660.  
  661. Maybe there was too much expectation but this
  662. certainly is not what Naked City fans had been waiting
  663. at all. I don't mean I don't like it but in spite of
  664. creating such a list of collaborators, maybe Zorn
  665. should have taken more care of the compositions. 
  666. I just can't figure out some of them.

  668. It's got its highlights though.
