Sorry you missed the show, since you were responsible for so many of us
catching it.
It was pretty incredible, going on til after 1am NY time. My Maui
friends made six 90 minute tapes, and I got all your highlighted acts
starting from Dave Douglas on CD, about 100 minutes worth.
Wish I coulda been there. There were regular announcements asking
people to leave to make room for those in the line around the block...
The sound quality varied, but got better as the evening progressed. The
bands were mostly incredible, my two favorite low-points being the
Campbell Bros.(My Prince on slide guitar!) and Paquito d'Rivera. But
Douglas, London, Gibbs, Byron and Reid were playing our songs - just fantastic.
Who was the lady who sounded a little "horse", as in on it, reading
occasional words from Miles? Somehow, she worked very well.
Thanks for the lead,
Dan, aqui en Taos, New Mexico
PS I'm excitedly looking forward to seeing Paraphrase (Tim Berne, Tom
Rainey and Drew Gress) here in Taos April 16 on the last leg of the
latest tour. I can't imagine there are too many fans in a town of
9,000, but I'll be dragging all I can to the show at the Taos Country
Club. This ought to be a great chance for the local "jazz" aficionados
to stretch a little...
PPSS On another note, could you, or someone, give us a brief run down
of the last year or so at the Knit? Sounds grim. Is it all over? What
will be left after the dust settles? Club? Studio? Label? Nuthin?

There's a lot of speculation that the NY Knit is closing down. Rumors from
a fairly decent source say that Dorff is $11,000,000 (NOT a typo) in the
red. The Hollywood KF is doing better than one might expect (more
rock-oriented booking policy etc) and is apparently on terra firma.
(The Hollywood KF reminds me more of the House Of Blues than it does Leonard
St, but that's another rant.)
I know there has also lately been something of a trend towards getting some
of the more established KF-style acts that have gone elsewhere to start
playing the KF again (again, from a reliable source). Ellery Eskelin will
be playing there soon, for instance, "for the first time in ages" (his
words).

I heard some Lightning Bolt on late night CBC radio a few weeks ago -- a live recording from late last year. I liked it quite a bit, but I have bizarre tastes when I'm driving at 3 a.m. I will admit I've never heard the Ruins, so don't know how they compare, but the closest reference I could think of would be Lemmy Kilmeister and some speedmetal drummer doing a really long jam. The host referred to them as part of a new wave of heavy metal, which I didn't think was really appropriate (though the thought of a metal resurgence minus the wanky guitars does sound appealing.

Central Florida folk,
Hey, if any one of you goes to see the Evan Parker show on Monday, I'd like
it if you could post or email me some sort of report, as I am unable to go.
Fuck. I hate being in high school. Here's a copy of the press release:
>EMIT presents:
>London saxophonist
>Evan Parker
>with Jim Stewart and Rick Adams
>Monday, April 16 - 8 PM sharp
>The Lobby - 217 Central Ave. in St. Pete
>
>"Evan Parker has had an incalculable influence on the direction of
>improvised music as a whole and on how it is played. It is art
>created for specific audiences for whom it is expected to have
>significance. It is music tied to his time and inseparable from it.
>He continues to be driven by a particular need to express himself
>according to some inner imperative." - Steve Kulak
>Evan Parker has developed his own unique style of improvisation on
>both soprano and tenor saxophone as a main leader in the European
>free improvisation movement. He has performed solo as well as in
>various combinations of duos, trios and various larger groups with
>Derek Bailey, Thurston Moore, Barre Phillips, Paul Rutherford,
>Trevor Watts, Tony Oxley, Peter Kowald and Peter Brotzman. His own
>trio includes Barry Guy and Paul Lytton, and he has played with
>groups including the Globe Unity, Spontaneous Music Ensemble, and
>London Jazz composers' Orchestra all of which has established him as
>one of the most original voices in contemporary music.
>EMIT is an experimental and creative music series in its fifth year
>of existence presenting concerts of cutting-edge music and sound art.

>The Lobby is located at 217 Central Ave. in downtown St. Petersburg.
