I'm surprised nobody else has answered so I'll unlurk briefly. Around 1982 or '83 Material (the Laswell Beinhorn, Fred Maher configuration) release an odd album of pop/funk/disco called One Down. I don't have it in front of me but I think the song is from this record. It may have Nona Hendryx on vocals. I kinda like this cheesy record. It's fun to hear the likes of Oliver Lake, Olu Dara, Fred Frith, and Archie Shepp solo over 80's funk. Trivia buffs will also note that this is the first recorded appearence by Whitney Huston. She sings the only ballad on the record, a cover of the Soft Machine (Hugh Hopper) song Memories. This is the track with Archie Shepp as well. Laswell's funk chops are on display throughout the other tunes. More info than you needed, most of it reasonably correct.

I remember reading somewhere that Ornette didn't think they could have
played the stuff life, without overdubs or studio assistance. I don't
remember any other comments. Also, I remember Zorn saying something along
the lines of how it was important to 're-radicalize' (forget the exact term)
Ornette's music because, by that time, it had become hard for many people to
see why it caused a stir in the first place back in the early 60s.

Well I don't think it is supposed to be a proper or accurate reading of
Ornette's music, from a fundamental musical stanpoint (whatever that would

My reply would have been "So what?" This isn't Bach where people can build careers arguing whether a piano or harpsichord is more appropriate. There's room for both just as there's room for Zorn completely misreading Ornette, if that's what he did. After all, it's Zorn's name on the cover so maybe this fellow just misread Zorn's vision. It happens.

Remarkable new little CD: _Jerusalem: Tales Outside the Framework of
Orthodoxy_ (Ritornell), by Random Inc. aka Sebastian Meissner. With that
tragically problematic city as its focal point, Meissner takes recordings
from Jewish and Arabic archives, runs them through his Powerbook, and
creates a beautiful series of abstract miniatures where you are confronted
with the dilemma of not being able to discern which of the sounds is
"authentically" Arabic and which Jewish. And somewhere about midway
through, some bits from _Bar Kokhba_ emerge. Fine stuff. Wonder if that=B4s

I've seen that Naked City performs songs live that are not on any of their albums... Such as "the list of Adrian Messenger." Where can one obtain these songs... Are there studio versions? Is there, perhaps, a Naked City album that hasn't been released? (wishful thinking) ...and Zorn has released 4 live Masada CD's... Why has he failed to release a single live Naked City album?

John Wall credits Zorn among the fragments on both Alterstill and Fractuur,
and Zorn is quite recognizable on one of them (I think it's Alterstill).
BTW, is anyone else puzzled by Wall's latest, Constructions V-VII? Very
minimal, still haven't quite gotten a handle on it.

I think that is from one of the Godfather movies. There are very few
original Naked City compositions which was played live but not recorded.

He didn't have Tzadik back then, might be one explanation. Not to mention,
that there is lot more improvisation in Masada, and thus more of an interest
to hear different versions of the same song. Naked City basically tried
comming as close to the studio recording as possible when playing live.
The real reason for all this live Masada stuff (as far as I know) is that
the original DIW releases ar every difficult to get and very expensive.
Tzadik releases are much better distributed and at a much lower price, so
it's kind of a help for the Masada fans.
However, Zorn has at some point said that there will eventually be released
a Naked City live CD. This I think would be great, but the rumoured reunion
I hope will never happen. Thankfully, Fred Frith has mentioned on his
mailinglist that he wouldn't be part of it (untill he turns 80) and there is
no way Frisell could play "Trash Jazz Assassin" or any of the other hardcore
pieces anymore. He mentioned in a Downbeat interview, that he feels to old
