  41. the ever-morphing Vision Festival has posted their schedule at 
  42. www.visionfestival.org. the first ten days are still at the KF, but now the 
  43. final three are at Orensanz.

  45. the name that jumps out at me is Louis Moholo playing two sets (first NYC 
  46. shows?). he had a stroke a while back, but I saw him in London in '98 with 
  47. Lester Bowie and he was still great. anyone seen him more recently?
  48.  
  49. also interesting is the attempt to capture the college rock audience over the 
  50. final three nights. each night has three performers you'd expect, with the 
  51. fourth being Yo La Tengo, the X-ecutioners, and Chan Marshall (Cat Power) 
  52. respectively.

  85. Ambarchi's other work, esp. that one on Tzadik?  The

  95. piece "Eye Contact"?], all the way down to
  96. Hodgkinson's alto playing; this music is good enough
  97. to make a curmudgeon out of me).

  121. nothing about Zorn's actual personality. His way to be
  122. appears to us as something really cryptic if we relate
  123. to his work as an expression of his understanding of
  124. life and his preference to shadow his thoughts by
  125. refusing to do interviews.
  126. If we add to that the fact that Zorn has paid special
  127. attention to MARGINAL artists in the broadest sense of
  128. the word(Duras, Genet, Marquis de Sade) , the equation
  129. gets really intriguing.

  131. But in this sense, my humble opinion is that we are
  132. usually attracted by opposites. To make myself clear,
  133. Genet was a thief and an homosexual, but Zorn might
  134. not be impressed by Genet's condition, but by a human
  135. being that follows "non-standard" values.

  137. To summarize, am I interested in William S. Burroughs
  138. because I'm a drug-addict? Obviously not. I'm simply
  139. concerned with a kind of living I hope I'll never fall
  140. onto. I want to know how these people live daily and
  141. how they manage to see the next day. That's all.

  144. saves Zorn from the electric chair.

  317. I even adore a lot of the Japanese S/M images Zorn has used or that I've
  318. seen in Japanese S/M mags. A lot of it I find very beautiful - but I'm
  319. also not interested in S/M oriented sex (not yet... ;-)).

  391.     Well... Their radicalism was what made them popular. They'd never reach
  392. such popularity if there was no ideology they could hang that music on...
  393. They 'explained' to people what they should listen to, and why. They did
  394. inin a very agressive and impolite manner, criticising (for example) Miles
  395. very hardly and impolitely. And, typical for our times, that agressive
  396. attitude gained them a large popularity.
  397.     They're making jazz a kind of official music - and if they succeed, jazz
  398. will follow the fate of 'classical music': only old, dead tunes, would b
  399. played, and modern composers or improvisors will be a kind of a curiosity
  400. tolerated - but hardly played - with a grin.

  504. Zorn apparently has a CD forthcoming which is dedicated in part to Georges 
  505. Bataille, an important philosopher on all of these issues.  His book 
  506. "Eroticism: Death and Sensuality" is the pivot point and it renders most of 
  507. the questions of "shock value" pretty moot.

  514. Common sense has created a climate in which the sexuality of children is 
  515. suppressed and any attempt to document such sexuality is always going to be 
  516. aligned with child pornography.  For someone like Bataille, this kind of 
  517. common sense and the events that led to its production (real exploitation 
  518. and egregious pornography) is itself "profane."  It's a knee-jerk reaction 
  519. that can never bear witness to another possibility in human experience, an 
  520. intermediate value between promiscuity/exploitation and puritanical reserve. 
  521.   It's child sexuality that would be "sacred" in this equation, since it 
  522. admits a space beyond the limit of acceptability.  Zorn of course is 
  523. interested in all this, just as he's interested in Japanese S & M (common 
  524. sense also dictates that these two terms always be put together even though 
  525. the codes of such sexuality in Sade and Masoch are of an altogether 
  526. different sort.  The "S" part in Japanese S & M, from what I've seen 
  527. documented, is far more ritualized and acted out, thereby making it closer 
  528. to Masoch's work than Sade's--See Gilles Deleuze's "Coldness and Cruelty" 
  529. for more on this topic).  The problem with Zorn though in all of this is 
  530. when he puts it all on display in order to sell CDs.  The concepts are 
  531. interesting; it's the commodification that makes it all seem possibly 
  532. self-serving for Mr. Z.  This is perhaps why he's now gone to the black box 
  533. and is concealing these images within the jewel cases--Victorian Secrets?
