From another list:
John Fahey died this morning following heart bypass surgery earlier this
week.
John went into the hospital last week following several weeks of chest and
arm pain and was told he'd had a heart attack. He elected to have the
bypass--sextuple, as it turned out--with a sober but optimistic outlook. He
had the operation Monday morning and remained heavily sedated thereafter. By
Wednesday night, his kidneys had shut down and, following a further
unsuccessful heart procedure Thursday morning, he was placed on life support.
He was removed from life support sometime around 11 am today.

Devil's Anvil - haven't thought of that record in decades - thanks
for the memories.
& In the context of recording/performing chronologically before
Oregon & McLaughlin, Jade Warrior was late enough that they started
out roughly the same time.
Kaleidoscope, Devil's Anvil, Yardbirds, et al were active in the
early to mid-1960s. I think Jade Warrior's first disc came out around
the same time as Inner Mounting Flame and the First Oregon disc
(though this may have been a year or two later) in the early 1970s.

Complete agreement. Fahey was my introduction to independent music many
years ago, definitely one of the turning points in my musical life.

does anyone have an opinion on the Ruins/Derek Bailey album "Saisoro"?
i heard one track i really enjoyed...very subtle playing by Bailey.
i like his more calm, textured playing the best.
i am also interested in hearing: Arcana, Nucleus, and Zorn/parker/bailey's

any opinions welcome.

Subject: Denio?
After seeing the victo schedule I'm curious enough to ask:
What are people's opinions here regarding Amy Denio?
I saw her and Lopez play this past summer in Boulder, CO. They each played
a solo set and then they performed in duo. It seemed to me that a number of
people in the audience actually knew Denio personally (i'm not sure if she's
local or what). I'm just confused: I found that she had a cutsy sense of
humor and an interesting stage presence but I didn't find her music to be
anything special. Her chords were interesting but her songs seemed one sided
and I don't understand the pairing. I found their set together to be dry
(she was basically playing an electronic drone of some kind and Lopez was
building around her). I really enjoyed Francisco Lopez's set however. I
don't know what to call his music but it was definitely an experiece to be
in that room.
Am I missing something?

Denio has a long and varied career, from the energetic avant rock of Tone
Dogs (which also introduced Zony Mash's Fred Chalenor to the masses) and a
number of Chris Cutler's groups (including the amazing (EC) Nudes album and
the more recent Science Group), to a jazzier Billy Tipton Memorial Sax
Quartet (who has recorded with an equally amazing and former Victo guest
Lithuanian group Ne Zhedali). She brings an energy to a group that is
unique, and her singing and lyrics are also very unusual. That said, her
solo work that I've heard leaves me unimpressed, and her recent
collaboration with Lopez was unmistakeably a Lopez album (although a fairly
good one). I'll enjoy her playing more when she returns to a rock group.

Hello,
>i am also interested in hearing: (...) Zorn/parker/bailey's "HARRAS".
I really like _Harras_. As I said earlier this week, I still have to fully
explore Bailey's work so I can't say where it stands in it. Bailey is playing
electricly, sometimes very noisy, soemtimes less. Although it sounds like
him, Zorn's playing is different than what you can hear with Masada and the
other projects to me. It does not always fit perfectly with Bailey, but it's
still nice. William Parker is doing a very good job. He creates some very
solid fundations to the music, but he adds some nice texture to the whole
thing.
Hope it helps,
Mathieu (I feel my English is horrible tonight, sorry!)

Cadence carries the full line of Splasch recordings as well for $16.00
each. If you phone, fax, or email your order, it usually goes out the same
day. I've never waited more than a week to get an order and I live on the
west coast. East Coasters probably get it 3 or 4 days earlier than that.
That's where I got the 1st Eller/Berne cd which is just ok by the way. Berne
is really just a guest in the band. But to order something overseas if
Cadence has it doesn't make much sense(cadencebuilding.com). I know it
sounds like a plug, but its answering another plug. Cheers,

I've told this here before, but in honor of his passing:
I saw Fahey once at UCLA's Royce Hall as part of a "Guitar Summit"
back in the mid to late 70s. He walked out on the stage, stepped up to
the microphone, and announced: "They have given me 45 minutes, and I
want to play my entire set, so forgive me if this is a little sped
up." Then he took his guitar out of his case, put fingers to strings,
and played blistering gorgeous music for exactly 45 minutes, stopped
dead in his tracks, and walked off the stage to futile screams for
more.
Blessings upon him and his music.
