Subject: The Beach Boys
I've seen Pet Sounds mentioned here before, and it seems the general concensus is that it is regarded very well, though for some reason I can't really take it seriously, and it sounds dated. Though looking back in BB's history, it seems everyone had looked forward to a "super album" called "Smile", which later turned into "Smiley Smile". I just won this CD on Ebay and wondering what everyones thoughts were.
Thanks

The Beach Boys are one of those bands you either hate or love. I never
fully got into the Brian Wilson is genius thing - but on second thought I
think he's one of the great American songwriters. Right up there with Cole
Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Irving Berlin, etc.
What impressed me about him is that he is pretty much responsible for
shaping the idea of 'California' culture. In a way they were always one
step ahead of The Beatles (as cultural icons) but do something that makes
them take a large step (or two) backwards. So I don't find their work that
consistent - and I often disagree with what their fans say is their best
work.
Smiley Smile is an INTERESTING album - with some lovely recordings. It is
one of those records where the artist is falling apart - Pet Sounds is a
piece of work where everything works. Right time, right place, and lovely
melodies.
Personally my favorite Beach Boys album is Summer Nights, Summer Days (I may
have this title wrong), because it sort of a bridge between their old
recordings and going into another place (Phil Spectorish sound). Pet Sounds
is a great album but there seems to praised too much - so I think lot of
first-time listeners will be turned-off or disappointed. I felt that way
when I first heard it - which was so hyped at the time. It took me a year
after that when the record settled in my brain. It is really a classic
album of 1966/1965 -L.A. vibe about it - yet it strikes me as a very
personal album by Wilson.
After that I think they did great songs, but their albums are spotty. Also
they are the most depressing group of individuals ever - which is quite
ironic considering the supposed 'upbeat' or 'happiness' that their music
convey to its mainstream audience.

Try Cadence/North Country distribution in the U.S.,
Verge distribution in Canada. Both carry Splasc(H)
