  131. Neighberhood of History and Influence.

  133. Recorded live at the Guelph (Ontario, Canada) Jazz
  134. Festival in 1999, it's an absolutely mesmerizing
  135. performance by CM. He plays piano in a varietry of
  136. moods and styles, talks about Cecil Taylor, Jaki
  137. Byard, his background and influences and is even part
  138. of a dispute with the venue owner about how to treat
  139. the piano keys amd strings.

  203. guitar, Adam Levy guitar, Tony Scherer bass.

  206. from the Bay Area, so maybe he returned after some time in NYC.

  254. Uri Caine has yet to re-arrange any of David Mahler's music but it's 
  255. still relelvant here, because of David's new Tzadik disc, Hearing 
  256. Voices.  The Mappings message that went out earlier was pretty 
  257. generic, but any of you who are interested in knowing more about this 
  258. disc, which has only received general descriptions as being kind of 
  259. weird as far as I've seen, can hear two of the four pieces on 
  260. Mappings this week:

  263. David's an old friend in Seattle who was at Cal Arts in the early 
  264. days with Peter Garland, Willie Winant, James Tenney, Ingram 
  265. Marshall, Michael Byron, Morton Subotnick, Carl Stone, etc (to mix 
  266. faculty & students indiscriminantly). He creates a lot of different 
  267. kinds of music, though only some of his electronic music is readily 
  268. available at this point (there's a CD of earlier works on the 
  269. Artifact label , the American one, not the Canadian one). The Tzadik 
  270. disc, Hearing Voices, out last week, includes four pieces in which 
  271. Mahler cuts up recorded speech by four artist-friends to create 
  272. portraits based on the rhythms, sounds, and meanings of their spoken 
  273. words. These are his first digitally-realized pieces in this vein, 
  274. but some of his earlier works were quite similar though created with 
  275. tape & razor blades.

  277. If you have an interest in electro-acoustic music, you might should 
  278. check it out - there's few other folks I know of working in this 
  279. style with such subtlety and care.

  326. Agreed.  But this also points out how fallible some record guides can be.
  327. Nowadays there's no way I'd turn to the Rolling Stone Record Guide for
  328. making my selections, but back when I was first getting into the music, it
  329. was pretty much my Bible.  And they trashed this record thoroughly.  But I
  330. found it in a 49 cent remainder bin and picked it up on a whim.  Scorching!
  331. The "Ohnedaruth" is the best, perhaps, of all available versions, and the
  332. flip side, "Lebert Aaly," was equally enchanting - a free-improv tribute to
  333. Ayler.  Go figure.

  397. After lurking for more years than I care to admit, here's my first 
  398. submittal.  (After pulling my hair out trying to find two King Crimson 
  399. collectors clubs CDs.)

  401. What software do you use to index and catalog your software?  I've got a 
  402. collection that is larger than I'd care to admit.  It has gotten to the 
  403. point that I can no longer keep track of what is at the office, what is in 
  404. the home office, what is in the closet, what is in the living room, and 
  405. what is being borrowed by friends.  I'm looking for a system to enter in my 
  406. CDs and create a database and tracking program (ie. so I can enter that 
  407. it's at the office).  If I recall, there are some systems that let you put 
  408. your CDs into your computer and then create an entry after referring to an 
  409. internet database.  That would certainly save on lots of typing.

  411. What do you guys use?  I remember a discussion of the subject about 6 
  412. months ago.

  431. Incoming (Streamline) is easily the best disc I've heard from Duncan, 
  432. probably due to the input of Christoph Heemann. it's out of print, but maybe 
  433. you'll be able to hunt one down. most of the others I've heard weren't 
  434. especially memorable.

  507. entered, including timings and track listings for all - about 2/3 of the
  508. collection.  It was very handy and searchable in all fields.  I did all the
  509. data entry manually, rather than futzing about with CDDB or other online
  510. sources, most of which don't include the music I collect anyway.

  512. Then my PC died last June and I lost it all.  I wanted to scream, but then I
  513. consoled myself that the discs themselves were still on the shelves.  The same
  514. could not be said of the concert ledger which had a list of every single
  515. concert I've ever attended, which may be gone for good unless I get rich
  516. enough to try to have the data extracted from the poor old machine.

  564. I hope that those who go to the trouble of entering the data on their
  565. own take a moment and update CDDB with it. If we each do a few of them
  566. as we run across them, it'll save a lot of time and energy for each
  567. other. And I hope that label owners do this as a matter of course for
  568. their own new (and back) releases, to ensure that the information
  569. distributed this way is correct.

  571. Although there are hassles and issues re who "owns" the information in
  572. the databases, each of us benefits when one of us updates the info.
  573.  
  574. (Not to mention that in case of computer disaster, you'd effectively
  575. saved your data offsite, to be easily retrievable when you scan the CD
  576. again.)
