Ah, it is a small world. For those who are interested I published the only
novel by Serge Gainsbourg 'Evguene Sokolov' and Boris Vian's 'I Spit on Your
Graves. I have details on both books on my TamTam Books website: address
down below.
And yes we all live in that small world!

That's nothing wrong in french chansons. I really admire Aznavour, Brel,
Becaud, Greco and Piaf.
Now I'm listening Mistinguette.
Cabaret songs IMHO are really important for the nowadays music.
Path leads from France to Germany /Weill, Eisler, Dessau, many Jewish
composers exiled to the USA/.
The influence of European music /also Klez and Balkan/ is in this very
moment predominant /IMO/.
BTW - anyone interested in easy-listening /Claudine Longet, MPS sound,
Badalamenti and others ??/

Subject: Web project
Hello All,
I had the idea to make a project dedicated to the music we like for
a long time. We all know how hard is to find information about our
favorite music in the net. Some musicians (you know who) don't want
to build there web sites, others just don't know how to start or
have something somewhere which is not updated for years... Even some
labels don't have their catalogs on-line.
The web server I want to start is about all this stuff. Many of us
have different sources of information and want to share it with
others. We are talking to musicians, writing reviews, taking
interviews, making pictures and much more. What I want to do is to
collect this information in one place and let other people know what
we know.
As a professional webmaster and technician familiar with music
business I will provide maintains of that server, make simple
design, write scripts, find web hosting and do other technical
things.
What I need is help from people who have any ideas or any useful
information.
I know that it is easier to say that I'm going to do it than really
make an interesting project, but I had such experience starting
music project from scratch and I'm not afraid of it. It is real
serious and interesting thing to do and I'm absolutely sure that
with the help of other people who are interested in this sort of
music we can do it.
Thank you in advance for the response.
Best regards,
Peter Gannushkin

yeah, he seems to be one of the main movers behind a new and really
interesting improv scene in Berlin, as best I can tell from my vantage point
over here in the US. I just finished listening to his solo CD, Tabit, which
is also very good, although not as essential as Perlon, I don't think. Schick
will probably have a release in 2001 on Erstwhile, but until it's more
definite, I'd prefer not to discuss details publicly.
I sold all of the copies of Perlon which I had, but if anyone out there still
wants either that or Tabit, let me know and I'll set up another trade with
Schick, depending on how much interest there is.
I also just lowered the direct mail order prices for Erstwhile CDs for people
ordering more than 2 discs at a time, details at
www.erstwhilerecords.com/order.asp.

Taken from the book New Dutch Swing- BVHaast is roughly transl. as 'Haste,

various commissions... as for the packaging, my favorite is the colorful,
little, round cheesebox [although not my favorite album]. apparently, an
early Breuker release was in a chocolate box, with a ribbon, etc. that's
pretty great.

Surely you can.
Start the guide, organize somehow reviews or both.
I will put any prepared stuff immediately after I will get it.
Actually I didn't mean Zorn-related information only but everything
about downtown and avant guard music.
The basic web server is on the way. I think first I will start it as
an extended and reorganized version of my own web page.

I recall someone on this list looking for this recently. I got a flyer from
Daedelus Music, a cheapo/cutout classical/jazz/world distributor today, and
noticed this: Stravinsky: Ebony Concerto; L'Histoire du Soldat, Milhaud: La
Creation du Monde. It's on Everest and their asking $5.98 for it. Woody
Herman and his Orchestra are credited for the Concerto, the others aren't
credited, but, hey, at that price! The Milhaud piece is kinda cool as well.

I used to order books from Daedalus until my bookstore added a separate
sale building; they were reliable and even then stocked a few interesting
music items. Looks like they've expanded that part but on the website
notice that they don't separate cassettes from CDs so some of those really
good deals aren't as hot when you see they're really tapes.
For great classical bargains it's hard to top Berkshire Record Outlet

Subject: new Signal To Noise
I got the new Signal To Noise in the mail today (#19, Cecil Taylor cover),
and it's a pretty impressive issue.
first of all, there's an essential five page screed from Eugene Chadbourne
where he critiques the writing in two previous issues of the magazine, point
by point, in his unique, hilarious style. major kudos to publisher Pete
Gershon for printing this. there's also a nice full page profile of Phil
Durrant by Jon Morgan and a very illuminating interview of Cecil T. by
zorn-lister (I think) Jason Gross, plus some nice writing by Bill Meyer,
including a review of the Transmissions Festival and a column featuring six
recent Austrian electroacoustic improv records.
anyway, well worth picking up. if you have trouble finding a copy, their web
site's at www.signaltonoisemagazine.org.

Much in agreement. Goldberg is a tour de force. And it succeeded in
introducing loads of folks not otherwise familiar with them to both a
fistful of various downtown players and the Glenn Gould recording.
I agree that the Schumann was weak and that the Wagner, de-Teutonized,
sounds fresh. But "recipe"? Alongside the breadth of his other recorded
work, these albums comprise a very minor percentage. And starting off
levelling that charge on folks would render dozens and dozens of artists
superfluous, after taking one crack at whatever ("ten Masada albums-
really, is that necessary?").

Of course there will be varying opinions of Uri Caine's Goldberg Variations.
Uri's plans for this project do, as Skip Heller mentioned, pre-date the
Mahler project and it is probably the success of the former that led to the
recording of the latter. Keep in mind that W&W is a European label, and
these recordings have helped Uri gain some recognition abroad. He has
played to packed houses throughout Europe, and been highly praised there for
his creative efforts. His first two recordings for Winter on the JMT label
were pretty much ignored, though critically praised. The next, Mahler, hit
it big in Europe, and one thing led to another. I find only the Schumann to
be a miss, "weak" as Skip so aptly states. The Wagner was recorded under
very difficult circumstances, live in St Mark's Square. The band had to
perform under the strict guidelines of protocol. Much had to be redone in
the studio. All of this was happening while Uri worked out his Goldberg
ideas. He also had offers to write stage music, ballet music, etc from
European sources. The success of the Mahler led to the recording of the
live 2CD set, which really wasn't planned but came into being when Winter
heard the tapes and decided it must be released.
Some years ago Walt Disney handed Duke Ellington some large amount of cash
to record the music from Mary Poppins. He told Duke he didn't care if the
record didn't sell, he just wanted to hear it for himself. Duke took the
money. Duke was smart enough to know he'd hear some critics scream, but
that the $$$ from this one project would allow him to keep going. And he
did.
Finally, those that claim Uri has found a niche he is exploiting, I would
point out that Masada has about 15 CDs (many sounding quite similar to these
ears), the Filmworks series numbers about 8, and that Zorn has done
something similar to Uri in his Jewish artists series: Bacharach, Bolan,
Gainsbourg. All these projects are worthy of praise, but let's not forget
that he has explored these projects to the fullest, as Uri is doing with
his.

i see that you are very experienced, and i have not very much to add,
but maybe someone is really interested in Pattons music right now. i┤m
sure there are ppl with more background on the topic (hello William
Dork?), but here are my 2 cents:
i really can┤t see the influences between both bands. imo, FNM is about
the gentle art of making enemies. for those who are interested, check
out king for a day - fool for a lifetime: it has everything: straight
rock, interesting vibes, bla lyrics and a very comfortable flow from the
beginning to the End.
When it comes to Mr Bungle - i would love to know why ppl gasp ??
Its all about music, and they are damn good in what They do.
so let me take the opportunity to add something, what Mr Patton had to
add about the Cannibal Corpse fans:
<...those are the kind of ppl that i think that need to hear that kind

kind of stuff and you keep beating your head against the wall, beating
your head against the wall, and then one day, somebody puts something in
