very good, as is the previous Durian CD, Printer. Efzeg has its moments of
rock-inspired wildness, but most of it is the Polwechsel-style subtle improv
we've grown to know and love.

I wasn't crazy about this after one listen, "a bit like chalk and cheese", to
use the words of Keith Rowe. the second long piece works better than the
first, but I don't think it's essential.

Rob Young used it in the Wire in his long glitch piece, then Ben Ratliff
picked it up for his Times piece a few weeks back.

thanks! I took lots of notes at the 24 hour MIMEO show, planning to write up
a long piece for this list, but it looks like I'm reviewing the show for the
Wire now, so I probably should hold off. but I will say that it was possibly
the most intense musical experience of my life. myself, Tom Pratt, and a
German fan were the only three audience members to make it through all 24
hours awake.

I already made my pre-order for MASADA LIVE IN SEVILLA 2000, and the Amazon
website says that it will be release on July 25th. Just thought you'd like
to know the (probably) exact date.

I think the biggest problem with the Tilbury/Parker disc is one of
ultra-high expectations. imo, it's not a bad disc at all, just not as
wonderful as one might have hoped. The first long track is a bit hunt
and peck, to my ears steered by Tilbury, but has some attentive
conversational playing eventually. The second seems to follow Parker's
lead, with EP in patented swirls of sound mode and Tibury gamely keeping
up. It's the only time I've heard Tilbury approach the frenetic in his
playing; he sometimes sounds positively Taylorish! The final short
piece, however, gels superbly. They revert to the style of the first but
everything connects, every sound seems exactly right. An entire album at
this level would've been incredible. Still, I'd say lower one's
expecational sights a bit and pick it up.

<< I don't know Merzbow's work. Is there
something that you would specifically recommend? >>
many of Merzbow's releases are in the wall of noise vein previously
discussed, but there are a few that aren't which I'd highly recommend. both
volumes of Music For Bondage Performance (Extreme) are more detailed and
almost ambient in stretches, and The Prosperity of Vice, the Misfortune of
Virtue (Che) under the name Masami Akita is tone-based electronica, much
closer to Pan Sonic than to a typical Merzbow record. I'd suggest trying one
of the Extreme records before giving up on Mr. Akita.
