  60. news about frisell.

  62. second, i unexpectedly ended up with this show on 3cds, taken from a dat
  63. audience recording.  it's a good show, and unique, but reminds me more of
  64. the recent bacharach/costello covers album (which is nice but a bit
  65. uneventful) than his 'good dog,
  66. happy man'.  nonetheless, there are some nice standout tunes, and
  67. good-if-subdued playing all around.  Also, i don't think the whole show
  68. was new originals (plus one cover).  for some reason i recall at least one
  69. tune as striking me as familiar.

  72. happy to do so.  i am also happy to do blanks&postage (i.e., you send me

  117. duos of the experimental guitarist Jean-Francois Pauvros
  118. with Keiji Haino.  The only information I have is that it
  119. has already been released in January 2000 and it is on a French label.
  120. For those Zorn-listers in Europe, anyone have additional
  121. information on the release?  Title?  Label?  Is the rumor
  122. true at all?  Is it the live performance from 19 May, 1999 which
  123. featured Haino + Jean-Francois Pauvros + Francois Causse at Musique 
  124. Action 99 at Centre Culturel Andre Malraux, Vandoeuvre, Nancy, France?

  154. that they are currently recording a new disc for geffen (with jim o'rourke
  155. producing). i guess their unusual deal with geffen, that allows them not only to
  156. pursue other projects but to do so using the sonic youth name, and their 4 syr
  157. releases have some folks who think they know what they're talking about

  376. Over the weekend I saw the Kronos Quartet video entitled "In Accord." 
  377. Zorn's Cat O'Nine Tails is featured, along with commentary by violinist
  378. John Sherba.  Sherba mentions that he has enjoyed playing the quartet
  379. frequently and for many different kinds of audiences.  According to
  380. Sherba U.S. audiences tend to catch the cartoon humor in the work.  In
  381. contrast, a particular audience in Tokyo remained silent throughout
  382. the entire performance, and consequently the piece took on a more
  383. serious tone.  Sherba also says that working with Zorn was a very
  384. special experience.  During rehearsals much attention was paid to
  385. details such as the scratches; Sherba notes that it was like talking
  386. about how to use vibrato in a Mozart quartet.

  452. an authority on Laswell, but the stuff I've heard seems to be pretty 
  453. good, if not necessarily ground breaking.  Is Laswell's playing 
  454. specifically poor, or is blame shared all the way around?  I'm not being 
  455. a smart-ass, I'm really curious, since you obviously have a developed 
  456. opinion.

  494. I've always found Stephen Fruitman's "thumbs up" reviews as an indication of a pretty good album.  I just bought it tonight based on his positive remarks from yesterday- i'll throw my input this way after I give it a few spins.

  528. Jazzonia is not my favorite piece by Bill but it has more to do with my 
  529. dislike for this genre of jazz than with Laswell's interesting rendering in 
  530. a hip-hop scat format.  As far as descriptors like "complete bullshit" or 
  531. "lame", they say more about the one who comments than about the music.  I 
  532. too would rather listen to Steve Fruitman, who puts in a lot more time 
  533. thinking and commenting about a work.  My advice is if one finds the last 
  534. "twelve or so" albums to be poor, one should stop buying a lot sooner.  
  535. There's no point investing in an artist you don't like.  Quit after three or 
  536. four, if you find it distasteful.

  678. I haven't heard about the end of the label, but despite Peter Stubley's 
  679. excellent site(s) dedicated to the label, I enjoyed visiting the FMP home 
  680. page for the occasional exclusive info.  Perhaps it will be revived in time. 
  681.   And as soon as I win the Lotto, I will assist the already bloated reissue 
  682. market by reviving the FMP catalog _en masse_.

  710. I have quite a few W&W discs, and have, thus far managed to keep them 
  711. from getting damaged.  The package does demand more care than your 
  712. typical jewel case, but as long as you keep the cardboard inside that the 
  713. disc actually rests on free of dirt and such, there should be nothing to 
  714. scratch them.  (I say this now, and I will, doubtlessly go home and 
  715. scrach one tonight)

  717. I, like many of you, have found the click that the disk makes as it seats 
  718. in the package to be a little disconserting, but mild pressure applied 
  719. along the edge of the disk should not warp it.  
  720.  
  721. I know this issue has been raised here in the past, and I'm curious, now 
  722. that W&W has been around for a while, if anyone else is having problems 
  723. with the package.
