I haven't listened to a lot of Buddy Rich, but I must say that his rendition
of West Side Story (on Blue Note, I believe...) always does it for me; Rich
adds a propulsive force to Bernstein's language that, to my ears anyway,
packs quite a whollop.

PS Any other jazz renditions of WSS out there to rival this one?
Steve Smith wrote:

To be perfectly honest, I can't. My personal reaction to Rich was that,
while he was an extraordinarily gifted drummer, I didn't find many of his
recordings all that special. But I'd also note that I stopped trying them
out kinda quickly.
My most recent attempt to listen to Rich was a Lester Young Trio disc
reissued by Verve that also featured no less than Nat "King" Cole on piano,
and yet I still cast that particular disc aside because the sound quality
was simply so appalling that I couldn't imagine listening to the disc again,
and I consider myself extremely open-minded when it comes to archival sound
quality and enjoy a great many things that were transfered from 78 rpm
records (not to mention the Mystic Fugu Orchestra...).
So perhaps someone else can answer the question more equanimously.

This week's New Yorker (with a really tasteless cover) features a lead stoy
about NY obsessive collector Alex Shear. Hooking in to that old 'obsessive
collector' thread, you might get a kick out of it.
Also: I picked up a new Paul Bley/Steve Swallow/Paul Motian import the other
day. It's great (Motian's best playing in a while). Does anyone know what the
deal is with this record?
And does anyone have the Paul Bley memoir that was recently published?

Caleb asked:
>So, what kind of music do other people play at parties, small gatherings or

>who put it on at parties when he was ready for everyone to go home.)
Fifteen years ago, after a disastrous early "Trout Mask Replica"
experience, this became one of the most fascinating ongoing
challenges/experiments of my life -- as much fun to ponder as the "What
is the nature of Art?" debate my wife and I have been having since we
met.
Of all the dozens of albums I've played at parties, I've found only two
that make EVERYONE smile, relax and settle into their chairs a little
more comfortably: Miles' "Kind of Blue" and an Al Green best-of I found
on Demon. But be careful: the power of Reverend Al is very strong, and
can bring together people who don't necessarily belong together. At one
party (with the A.G. disc in the changer), two people who arrived
separately were married within a few weeks, then divorced a few weeks
after that.
No doubt, we all have discs which will clear the room, but I'd appreciate
any other suggestions on good party-fuel music.

Have you tried clicking on the recording site? As recently as a couple of
weeks ago it had lists of Knit and Tzadik releases. I think you have to
move all around to find it though.

Hey Patrice,
The Wire gets enough promo. You can also read the ads in Cadence to find
out what's new.
You have a record label as well? Am I the only person without one?

Actually the band RRK worked with around Ohio featured a blind organist
(Eddie Baccus) and a blind drummer that was billed as The Three Blind
Mice. Other times he was billed as "The Walking Blind Man". Sometimes
political correctness doesn't seem that bad, doesn't it?
The King LP was recorded as Early Roots (Bethlehem BCP-6016) in 1976, so
might still exist in a used vinyl shop. Or maybe bug whoever ownes those
Bathelehem tapes, which include some Mingus stuff that has just been
reissued, to do the same for RRK.

Yeah listen to the version of WSS on Black Lion CD, entitled High Won, High
Two by Dave Burell. Yes, it's the same pianist who worked most prominently with
Archie Shepp and David Murray. The session features Bobby Knapp (d) and
Sirone (b) and some other tunes feature Sunny Murray (d) and Pharoach
Sanders on tamborine [!]
A pianist very much worth investigating.

Someone here was looking for Buddy Rich recommendations. I suggest "Roar of

guitars and bass. Oh yeah, Buddy too.

Oddest thing happened. I have a Harman Kardon CD carousel, about three
months old now, plays and sounds good. Last night, I pulled out the
Ganelin Trio's Poco a Poco (Leo) and set it in the player for the first
time. It would not play -- the player treated it as though the tray was
empty, skipping to the next tray. I tried it on several trays, with
similarly unsuccessful results. The CD has played on at least two
single-CD players fine. Any insight into what's going on here?
Also, curious to hear any feedback from this list on Carlos Santana's
new one....

Patrice is right about the Knit. Fac. - they never keep their stuff up to
date. I know they just released new CDs by Thomas Chapin's trio (last
recording apparently), Rashied Ali/Louis Belogenis, and Joe Morris w/ Rob
Brown, Andrea Parkins, and one other person.
Tzadik lists theirs (including future releases) at www.tzadik.com, and
Forced Exposure (www.fe.org) also lists them with the covers as soon as
they get them in stock.
By the way, has anyone else heard the recent Marc Ribot CD on Tzadik? It
has some moments that could have been edited out, notably some singing,
but also has some of his best playing, more in the semi-abrasive Rain Dogs
vein. Its long enough (72 min.) that even with a few rough moments its
worth getting.

and I think a couple more before that (the listings are only kept public

Hi all,
yesterday evening I went to Leer (Germany) to see this trio
perform. Although I liked the concert as a whole (especially due to
the beat-oriented parts, since it's incrdedibly hot over here. It
keeps your mind off of all the 'sweatiness'), I have the feeling the
music lacks ideas. It just isn't exciting enough. Does anyone of you
have the same feeling about them? I don't have the cd, so this is
purely about the live-performance.
Another question: has the Zorn String Quartet album already been
released in the US?

I had the same impression after the show at Warsaw Summer Jazz Days
festival. Especially Torn, who did one Frisell-like attack-less part and one
Satriani-like solo. I didn't saw any waork between them, they were
independent from each other, Sharp was making the same slap-bass sound all
the time regardless Reid metal-solos, or Torn who was playing with the knobs
of the amp all the ime.

Not according to the liner notes. An excerpt:
"Ra rose to cross the small stage and confer w/ Cage. Cage nodded agreeably,
and again mouthed his stretched-out vowels; Ra gently, sparingly, added
music-box sounds, delicate crystalline notes. There was a silence, or near
silence, during which Sun Ra and John Cage eyed the audience. Everyone
waited, attuned to the next moment, the next sound. Then Cage and Ra
relaxed their attentions; the collaboration was done."
