  44. This may be old news to some or all of you, but I just saw an 
  45. obituary for Fred Hopkins in today's newspaper.  Apparently, he 
  46. passed away on 7 January, of heart disease.  Very sad.  He was a 
  47. monster of the bass, and though I'm very glad I did get to see him 
  48. once, with David Murray and Andrew Cyrille, I wish I'd had more 
  49. opportunities.
  50.  
  51. On a completely different note, does anyone else have the big Mercury 
  52. collected Roland Kirk recordings?  Listening to parts of it the other 
  53. night, I was struck by the way in which a short twenty second piece 
  54. called Ad Lib prefigures the Torture Garden (Guignol / middle of 
  55. first album) compositions of Naked City.  I don't suppose it's a 
  56. direct influence, but I swear that Naked City could have covered it - 
  57. (and I'm tempted to trawl for a specific piece that resembles it! 
  58. Heh!)

  125. generally speaking? I'm fairly well-versed in Zorn stuff, so 
  126. comparisions to any of his projects would be good (and bring this

  176. If I had to compare, closest to Painkiller and Naked City with a touch of=
  177.  Spy vs. Spy, but much more "metal" than each of the aforementioned=
  178.  projects. Meshuggah is VERY heavy and aggressive... tight like Naked City,=
  179.  all-out ugliness like Painkiller (for the most part). Very wild and varied=
  180.  use of time signatures. There are MP3s from the new album at http://www.mes=
  181. huggah.net/audio/chaosphere/ or, if you want, I'll make you a real audio=
  182.  file of a piece of a song. Let me know. I can send it to you or the whole=
  183.  list, unless anyone does not want to hear it.

  198. This is happening at City College (133rd Street, Manhattan) on the
  199. 19th.  So far, Muhal Richard Abrams, Lester Bowie, World Saxphone
  200. Quartet and Wilbur Morris are signed up for this.  There's a lot more on
  201. the bill but I can't remember who else is performing right now.  When I
  202. get a hold of the flyer again, I'll post the info.  Anyone else who has
  203. this info is welcome to beat me to the punch and post it to the list.

  262. I usually do as well. Any stuff from the downtown scene, anyway... I get all=
  263.  my metal needs, like the new Meshuggah, for free. Topaz was the first=
  264.  exception (besides a few discs during my stint as an intern at KFR). Siam=
  265.  may be a new client at the good ol' job, so we got the discography. Around=
  266.  a month and a half ago I was at the office and on top of the CD player sat=
  267.  the Topaz disc! I hadn't made the Siam connection until I actually saw the=
  268.  album, then put two and two together. I had been looking forward to it for=
  269.  ages and knew it wasn't suppposed to be out until Feb... needless to say, I=
  270.  was ecstatic to get a copy and took it home with me that very day.

  411. They are the greatest band on Earth (of course coming from a 16 year old
  412. kid, may not mean much to a lot of you!) Their earlier records are filled
  413. with strange pop-type songs with a musique conctrete touch. After about 1987
  414. they made more "mature" sounding stuff, but still brilliant. They are quite
  415. a spectacle live. I'd probabaly start with any of the Chemical Playschool
  416. cds (compilations of more obscure stuff) , or the Stained Glass Soma
  417. Fountains cd. If you don't like it in the beginning, let it grow on you,
  418. soon you'll be irritating everyone you know about useless facts about the
  419. band (or maybe that's just me...). Quite a surprise to hear about them on
  420. the Zorn-list, one place I wouldn't expect them. Email me if you want more
  421. info.

  440. I would pick up the two Enemy trios "Jump" and "Now & Now" (both with
  441. Horner/Nicholson ) as it appears that Enemy is out of business.  If you
  442. can't find those two, the two Hat Art's "Alive in the House of Saints" and
  443. "Even the Sounds Shine" are excellent with the latter adding Marty Ehrlich
  444. and Dave Douglas to the trio.

  497. The complete performances from the 1998 No Music Festival, recorded in
  498. London, Ontario on March 27 & 28, are now available in a 6-CD box set
  499. produced by Entartete Kunst Records.

  501. The festival, organized to honor the singular and seminal 33-year career
  502. of the Nihilist Spasm Band, featured noise musicians and improvising
  503. artists from Canada, U.S.A., and Japan, including John Corbett/Terri
  504. Kapsalis/Hal Rammel; Thurston Moore; Jojo Hiroshige & Junko; Knurl; Alan
  505. Licht; plus the NSB.  In addition to the regular concerts (recorded in the
  506. superb acoustics of Aeolian Hall) the records include about 3 hours of
  507. unique site-specific configurations struck up amongst this impressive
  508. international assemblage of experimental musicians, gathered toether for
  509. the first time.

  511. The Nihilist Spasm Band formed in London in 1965 and have played together
  512. continuously, retaining its original membership, ever since (save for the
  513. 1992 death of Greg Curnoe).  The NSB has won a distinct and charmed
  514. reputation in avant-garde circles. It blends skeptical and exhuberent
  515. humour with a repudiation of musical conventions played on electric
  516. instruments it has invented and built.  Its members all are now in their
  517. late-50s and early-60s.  The No Music Festival invited select friends and
  518. fans of the NSB to play together in the band's hometown.  What resulted
  519. was an important redefinition of an often maligned and misunderstood
  520. musical form -"noise."

  522. The No Music Box has been produced in a limited edition of 500.   In
  523. addition to the discs, each set includes a booklet of photos of the

  598. and Benoit Delbecq on prepared piano. There are 4 records : 2 CDs on 2Z and
  599. 2 vinyls on Rectangle, especially the wonderful Morceaux Choisis, a
  600. collection of covers of famous french songs (Serge Gainsbourg, Brigitte

  627. Not a legitimate one.  It's a two CD bootleg on Silver Rarities... a
  628. complete set from the Rainbow in London, March 18, 1973, shortly after Jamie
  629. Muir left the group.  It's also got the pretty common Bremen improv from
  630. October '72 with Muir (which I think is currently slated to be King Crimson
  631. Collector's Club release number three), plus a pair of filler tracks from
  632. Berkeley, CD, June '73.
