Hi!
I wonder if there are any fans out there who collects Yello articles &
interviews
(not reviews though). I have a big collection, and would like to swap. I
prefer *English*
articles, but I also read a bit German.
Also, does anyone have a CDV player (PAL or NTSC) and the CD-video-single
"The Race"?
I would like to know the exact duration of the video version, but I can't
"read" my disc.
It says 3:20, but I'm not so sure of that, since it has a different
duration on the VHS video.
(As we all know, the video version is not the same as the single version).
OK - that's it for now. I do urge you all to keep the Yello spirit up by
sending some mails!
You should see the XTC mailing list - a HUGE mail every second day or so,
with 1,200
members. I can't believe that XTC is so much more popular than Yello!
Best regards,
Jonas Warstad

I've mentioned these people before and i'll mention them again. i have no
connection other than as a satisfied customer. their prices are *slightly*
higher than a UK high street shop, but they have suceeded where shops have
failed.
Pastel Blue, claim that if it's available, they'll get hold of it, video or
music, even different video systems!

to my knowledge there are two videos. "the race" and "essential". but please

check Lazlo's discography section 4: Video Releases for a complete listing of

Hi. There are some interviews in ftp.uwp.edu (or in ftp.funet.fi/pub/
culture/music/western/Yello/). They are copied to computer by Yello fans.
Would you please type some interview which is not yet there into computer?
Or how about sending a photocopy to person who is interested in to
transfer the interviews into computer? Or how about scanning the pages
into computer as images (saves time)?
I hope you really mean 'share' when you write the word 'swap'. We, who
don't have anything to swap with you, would like to read the interviews
too.

Given a lot of recent complaints, I'm thinking about switching the list configs
around some. Certain mailers apparently make it difficult to send personal
replies when the reply-to address is set back to the list (as it is on all
my lists). I want to know what people would think if I changed things so that
normal replies would go to the original poster and group replies would go to
the original poster and the list. Along with this I'd probably start adding
the list names to the subject lines of messages that go out over the lists,
to make it easier to see where your incoming email is coming from.
Please send your responses DIRECTLY TO ME (not the list). If you don't care,
no problem -- but it would change the list behavior some and it's only fair
to give you some warning of that.

Thanks, I visited that site now and I had all of them already. I have about
60
more of them, and since you seem to be the only Yello fan who is really
interested in articles/interviews (at least on this mailing list), I don't
think it's
a very good idea for me to type in all those interviews - it would take an
eternity.
Also, I have no scanner available.

As I said, I have seen no interest so far from anyone (except you) to read
interviews... One person replied "Yello rules", which is of course very
witty
and fun (?), but doesn't really add anything to this list. In my
forthcoming
Yello book any and all info from my interviews will be included (not as
direct
quotes though) and coupled with my own (forthcoming) interviews with Boris
(and perhaps Dieter too). So you will miss nothing. 8-)
Thanks for your reply, Juhana!

Subject: Remixes from Zebra?
Date: 06 Oct 1996 17:10:06 +0100 (BST)
Hi all.
I've been vaguely hunting around for CD singles from Zebra for a while
now, and have both the How How singles and (more recently) the Suite 909
single. I was _very_ disappointed with the Suite 909 single: none of the
tracks seemed to bear much (if any) relationship to the original track.
Are there any other singles released from the Zebra album, and if so,
what are they like? I tend to get rather peeved with 'remixes' that are
simply some repetitive track that some DJ dreamed up and then plastered
one or two Yello samples on top :).
PS: Does anyone have any spare Jungle Bill singles lying around?

Exactly! Third party remixes are nowadays very bad. I have Tremendeous
Pain CD single which does have Bible Mix by Boris; it is good and
amount of the stuff increases toward the end. On the same CD single
there are two mixes by third party people: house mix and extended mix.
They *are* boring and could be described as you just done, nothing
to do with Yello. It is so sad.
Anything about the new album yet? Has somebody seen this album in
stores?

You want a REALLY bad Yello mix....on one of the volumes of "Big Hard
Disk" there's a mind-numbingly terrible techno-rave "remix" of Vicious
Games...needless to say it really doesn't have much to do with remixing
Vicious Games.

Thanks for telling me! I started to seriously doubt that there was any
interest
at all in Yello anymore (bad for my forthcoming book!). But I still don't
have the
time to put all my articles/interviews on the net.
OK, that's all for now.

I could add that the original Yello tracks (mixed by Yello themselves) are
usually
timeless and have the unique Yello sound, and are not only made to be
*danced*
to but also to be *listened* to, whereas the so called DJ remixes are there
because
the record company want the song to be played at the clubs too (or
discoteques as
they use to call it when I was young) - and somehow the record company feel
that
people don't want to (or can't) dance to pure 100% Yello. So, while it is
true that the
DJ remixes are not very good to listen to (or outright awful sometimes),
you should
always remember that they are mainly made for dancing. This means that
after a
while, even the DJs themselves won't be playing them, since they become
outdated
very soon. 8-) Conclusion: for listening, stick to my list of pure 100%
Yello! (At my
Yello page: <http://www.algonet.se/~jonwar/yello.html>
Also, Mark Mackay mentions he has "both the How How singles and (more
recently) the Suite 909
single." Well, there were 4 (four) How How singles in Germany and 2 in UK.
There was also "Do It"
in Germany and one totally different in the US. Tremendous Pain: one in
Germany and one (different)
in the US. Plase contact me if you need further info (or via the mailing
list, it's up to you).

Recently people wrote about "Tremendous Pain" and how they didn't like the
remixes. I have to disgaree. Firstly the different version of the track to what
is on the album is superb - it's literally a new track in itself! But I also
found that the remixes offered a good alternative to Yello's versions,
especially since they were true to the original instead of being some
totally different track which only uses samples. Am I alone in this view?

I guess it depends on your age: if you are young and like the techno of
today,
you'll probably like the Tremendous Pain single versions. But if you, like
me,
are older (30 or more) you'll probably have a harder time liking it. We,
who grew
up with Yello since the early 80s, probably like that early period better,
or at least
are more fond of it - nostalgia!
> Also someone mentioned a single to "Suite 909"... are you referring to

In Germany, the Tremendous Pain single had the title "Tremendous Pain
(Suite
904)", while in USA it was simply called "Tremendous Pain". (909 is wrong).

Remixes by Boris himself are ok, not those third party remixes.
I have CD single Tremendous Pain (Suite 904) which contains the Bible Mix
by Boris -- the mix is good.

I've had a lot of response to the list format change proposal I sent out,
and while a few people didn't like the idea the response was overwhelmingly
positive so I'm going to make the changes as soon as I get a chance.
Once again, here's what's going to happen:
* Replies will no longer be automatically redirected back to the list.
Check the instructions for your mailer to see how to send repsonses
to the list address.
* The name of the list will be prepended to each subject line.
I realize that some people will be inconvenienced by this but the response
I got was 15:1 or 20:1 in favor of these changes, so clearly far more
people are being inconvenienced by the current setup.

From: "Jonas Warstad" <jonwar@algonet.se>
Subject: (yello) Yello Lightmaker/videos/films
Date: 14 Oct 1996 21:44:22 +0100
This is an open letter to R. Hunter Gough and all others who have
qustions about Yello films, videos (how to get them & what to buy).
VIDEOS:
Yello have released three videos. By video I here mean a collection
of video clips made for Yellos tracks, usually singles. They are:
* The Video Race (1988, four songs) [may be deleted now]
* The Yello Video Show - Yello Live at the Roxy N.Y. Dec 83
(split up in six parts, with six songs in between) (1989)
* Essential Yello (1992, has about the same tracks as the CD)
For detalied info on exactly what tracks are on each one of the
videos, I refer to <http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?yello>
(Lazlo Nibble's Yello discog). Even though details on exactly
what version of the song is featured on the video is not always
included, it is still good enough for our purposes. (Yello have a
habit of having different versions of their videos, for example
The Race: it exists both as the normal single version and a
special video edit. Most importantly, Desire is featured in its
extended version on The Video Race, whereas it's edited down
several minutes on Essential Yello. Being one of their best videos,
with many excellent clips from their Havanna visit, it's really
a shame!
SNOWBALL:
Yello (Dieter mainly) started on his dream movie project in 1985,
and it is still not entirely finished. Titled Snowball in 1987, a
promo CD was issued, including two unique Snowball tracks.
In the Baby CD booklet, it says: "Snowball - a film by Yello - will
be out next season on a screen near you". That was 1991.
Tracks like Ciel Ouvert and Sweet Thunder were originally recorded
for Snowball.
ONCE UPON A DREAM:
This year, Snowball was renamed Once upon a Dream, and was
supposed to be released at the end of the year, along with a
soundtrack.
THE LIGHTMAKER:
I have no idea, but it could either be a re-re-title of Snowball, or
simply a film that Yello was asked to contribute music to.
I could phone Yello's former manager and ask, but then again
I'm sure we will find out sonner or later.
OTHER FILMS:
There are numerous films/movies that include Yello music, but some
of them are more interesting than others since they include music not
otherwise available. Adventures of Ford Fairlane is the best, since
this video has many unique tracks, mostly (splendid) early mixes of
tracks that were later released on Baby. Then there is Cobra, a recent
Japanese Star Wars-like video featuring some unique tracks and also
some other Yello stuff that is available on normal Yello albums. For a
complete list of unique tracks/versions, I repeat my site address:
<http://www.algonet.se/~jonwar/yello/>
Then there are videos/soundtracks that only has one or more Yello
tracks, that are also available on a Yello album. These videos are
only for hardcore collectors, since you get nothing unique. For
example, "Never Ending Story 3" includes The PreMix (How How)
in some scenes.
HOW DO I GET HOLD OF YELLO VIDEOS, THEN?!
Go to my homepage <http://www.algonet.se/~jonwar/>.
At the bottom you will find several links to various CD/video
shops on the net. OK?
Regards,
Jonas Warstad

Hi there,
I'm Dan and I just signed up. Recently I found the yellow-vinyl 12" box set
in San Francisco (which I don't think had ever been played), so I was
reminded about the genius of Yello. One thing I'm wondering is if I should
pay the import-price for "Baby"... Do people generally consider that among
Yello's best? I think everything they've done has been rad but you don't
hear much about that album. Also, does anyone know if new Yello is in the
works? Sorry if you've already been over this.
Later,
Dan

I think Baby is one of Yello's best (though it's not even forty
minutes). Lots of others agree. E.g., Absolute Sound positively
raved over Baby. Baby has variety and cleverness to rival any
Yello long-play output. IMO, well worth the price, since it never
has been released in the USA.

I suggested to put Yello lyrics to the book, but there are problems.

They doesn't need to be correct. Just include the lyrics we have
as appendix "Lyrics interpreted by Yello fans". Put place (Lazlo's
discography machine) where to get them and where to send updates
to your book.

Jonas requested me to post this conversation to mailing list such
that we all may send questions. Please, post questions to the mailing
list only because then we all see the questions and may get further
ideas from questions already posted. I think Jonas gets the questions
this way as well.
I will post my questions soon.

There are no lyrics available from the Discography Machine and given that the
former owner of this list (Dave Datta) had to shut down the lyrics section of
the Music Archives due to legal pressure from record company lawyers it's a
safe bet that there will never *be* lyrics available from the Discography
Machine.
