Subject: (yello) Yello book: the quotes dilemma
I'd like to hear your opinions on using quotes in
my (fortcoming) book on Yello. I have collected
lots and lots of quotes from various sources
and I have them all stored chronologically in
my computer. Now, shall I use them or not?
On one hand they're subject to copyright etc etc,
and it may look "cheap" and "lazy" to use them
in a commercial book, but on the other hand they
often provide and interesting insight from that time
and what good do they do in my computer?
I have interviewed Boris about all the tracks etc,
but I have yet to meet Dieter, and with his busy
and unpredictable schedule I sincerely doubt that
I will ever have a chance of interviewing him in person
(no he doesn't have email) and the point is, Dieter
is usually the one who did all their interviews.
Right now I'm working on 1981, and I have to admit
that including a few well chosen quotes here and there
from 1981 looks much better that not including them.
If anyone out there has any knowledge of using quotes
from other people's interviews - the legal copyright stuff
let me know, OK? Note that I only intend to use direct
speech quotes from Dieter and Boris, never anything
that was written by the interviewer himself. The tricky
question is who owns the rights to what Dieter and Boris
said - themselves or the interviewer who cought their
words on tape? Someone in Zurich suggested that
Yello themselves own the rights to their own words
in interviews. Is it enough to mention [in brackets] after
the quote where it's from (magazine and date) or do I
have to get a personal approval from the person who
did the interview (not an easy task!) Best, JW

No, I'm sorry - 'infantile' just won't do! I don't think we're
comparing BT to Yello. Yello aren't in the same ball park as BT (and
many others) when it comes to writing for the dancefloor. It's simply
not where they're coming from. 'Pocket Universe' is OK but it's stuck
between what Yello is good at (their established stylistic approach)
and what Yello is maybe not so good at (out-and-out dance music).
I listen Yello for different reasons from those which make me listen
to BT - there aren't too many areas where they speak the same
language, but both do what they do extremely well.
Just my two groatsworth!

Subject: (yello) RE: Yello book: the quotes dilemma
Hi Jonas !
I am working myself on a final exam (but not on Yello).
Therefore I have to use lot of quotes out from different sources
s.a. film dialogues, interviews from TV&radio and also from books and
magazines.
The copyright is always on the side of the person who has expressed a thought.
Even if the thought is written in a newspaper the right belongs to the
interviewed person.
An example: If you are are not willing to have your statement written in
the newspaper
you have the right to forbid that. Even if the reporter want to have this
statement in his article he has to ask for a permisson. All the other
things written in books, biblographies or reported on TV
have the copyright of the journalist or author.
In scientific works you are allowed to use quotes, but only in the correct
sense. So you have to use complete sentences and you have to watch that you
only use qoutes that do not missinterpretate the meaning of the original
text. But most important at all is to write downt the exact source to the
quote. The best thing would be to make a list at the end of the book with
all the sources you have used. If you do these things correctly, there
might be no problem in using quotes.
Yours,
G E O R G

Thanks George, if what you say is correct
then it's the best news I've heard for a long time!
Change of subject:
A non-Net German Yello collector told a friend
of mine that the Dutch and the German I Love You
single didn't have the same version of the A-side.
I don't have both so I can't compare (they have the
same cat no). I've never heard of that! Anyone? JW

If anyone out there has a good collection of
Yello interviews and articles, please email me
privately and I'll send you a list of what I have
and maybe we can do a trade. This is, of course,
for the book, and the more material I have, the
more interesting it will be. I already have lots of
them, but I'm sure there's something I missed.
I'm only interested in English ones (too much
trouble to translate them otherwise) and only
interviews, not reviews. Thanks. JW

Hi folks,
This is the first time I've posted to this list. The reason is because
someone emailed me a while back to ask if I could dub a copy of Yello's
videos for them. This was right before I got married and got moved
into my new place, so I lost the person's name and email address. If
I talked to anyone on this list about this, please get in touch with
me. My sincere apologies. Thanks!

Hi,
do you mean a "chat", or a WebPage with Comments ?
The first would mean a real-time chat - if anybody is in there you
can talk with him. If even not, you have to wait, perhaps for hours :-)
This is possible with IRC but also on a web-site.
The second would mean something like all this e-mail on one page.
Everybody can read alle the e-mails.
For me would be an IRC-Channel enough !-)

Best thing to do is to arrange a date & time for list members to go
on-line.
Perhaps do this well in advance so there's opportunity for lots of fans to
know
about it in time.
In terms of having a free web-page to post comments - I suppose the list
already accomodates for that, -
a chat-room however, would give more immeadiate answers to urgent
questions.

Yes It is a great idea to talk to other Yello fans...
I think the best way is to use IRC Chat , its a simple but effective
way to talk. Use something like #yello , channel .. Or try Internet
Phone5 from vocal tec , we could to other in real time then using
microphones if you have got one. Hope we can all meet...soon...

I'm not too excited about this new ICQ-phenomena. It seems to me that the
program performs a lot of 'hidden' things on my connection.
A friend of mine talked me into trying it. But I quickly talked myself out
of it. The security seems a bit... ehm low. Quite a few hackerpages
describes how easy ICQ is to break in on.
Anyway, besides the paranoia, I just like to keep my Internet apps as
simple as possible.
So why not take advantage of one of the many web-based solutions?
Cheers,
David John

I'm on a quest of sorts - once upon a time about 10 years ago, I was
standing in the local music store with $20 ni my pocket - Should I buy
Yello's Flag CD or The Race? I bought Flag. Later on, I came back with
more cash, but the Cd was gone. I had to put up with a cassette copy of
The Race.
Now, ten years later, I'm trying to track down a CD copy of The Race
(U.S. import). It had 3 mixes of The Race, and I think a few variations
of Oh Yeah... The fabled "After The Race" is on here as well.
Anyone who has seen it/would sell their CD/knows a good online import
store/any other valuable info/ would be most appreciated.

Oh, the cassette? Snapped after playing it over and over a few hundred
