The way I see it - the Internet is going to have a
profound influence on how we listen and purchase music
in the next few years. The big music companies here in the USA
are *VERY* worried about stuff like MP3.
I have been pretty impressed by the quality of MP3 - as a consumer,
the ability to listen to MP3 files before I go out and buy a CD is
a great idea. Sure artists work 'long and hard' at what they do -
but look at the amount of money they make !!!!
I'm all for seeing as many MP3 files as possible ... this can
only benefit the consumer. Sure the artist may suffer a little ... one
less house ... a little less nose candy ... :))
Whatever -
Maybe its possible that Yello MP3 files on the W3 would have a positive
result on music sales and expose more people to Yello.
After all Jonas, if the quality of MP3 is so shitty - artists shouldn't be
worried about it should they ?? !!
Just my 2 cents worth ...

for. Boris is working long and hard on each
song, and making them available for free
in MP3 is an insult both to him and to the
inherent quality of his songs (MP3 reduces
the amount of data by 90 %). JW

But what about those Internet shops which have a lot of mp3 available?
Are the mp3s only excerpts?
mp3 can be of the good quality; I use 1:7 compression as a good compromise
for layer 3 audio. Fauerhofen's encoder makes better quality mp3s than the
free example encoder at Hannover (which I'm using). And mp3 audio is still
improving in future.
To correct Jonas: ratio 1:10 is only one possibility. Also, the quality
is related to the content of the file. Simple audio such as sound samples
will be of the better quality than a complete music with the same compression
ratio.
A couple of months ago I had some complete Yello songs available but
I took them off. I'm for sharing rarities privately but distributing
them in public is no no. Also, they might end up for somebody who makes
illegal CDs. Illegal CDs can be of the poor quality and buyers may not know
both that the CD is illegal and that it is poor quality. They wastes buyer's
money.
Some excerpts might be okay. Copyright law gives you right to make
a review and put some excerpts available. I'm sure you may put excerpts
for several tens songs if you write deep analysis of Yello.

Excerpts long enough works the same. A text describing what is good in the
songs and so on increase the interest more than the excerpts or songs alone.

mmmmmmmm true ... all the more reason for their stuff to be more
accessible ... MP3 sounds like an ideal opportunity.

agrees artists on the average not making money for their work...concludes a
method of obtaining artists work for free is the logical choice...
having trouble with this; is the implication that as long as they are going to
work for free everyone should have the opportunity to say they should have
made some money on that song or CD ?

huh ??
sorry - you missed me there - if an artist is having trouble feeding
themselves,
putting some of their music on the web might lead to more exposure
an hence some record sales.

Subject: (yello) MP3 files
Hi guys!
Up to now on this mailing list I haven't read any satisfying answer to my
original question: "Are there any rare Yello songs available on the net"?
Would it be fair to assume that there aren't any then?
It would be a pity!=20
After all, music is freely available on radio and on TV; and nobody minds
about copying music from there (as long as you do it for your own purpose).
In fact I started becoming a Yello fan after having copied Vicious Games
from radio to tape and after having listened to it for a couple of times.
(Andre, this is more or less your point.)
Artists might worry if availability on the internet keeps consumers from
buying songs on CD, alright. But what if those songs aren't available
anymore in the shops like the ones I am looking for? I personally have all
Yello songs published on their albums, but just a couple of maxi CDs. So
why should Yello worry about me getting the rest from somebody on the net?
(And don't tell me that Mercury are going to re-issue the B-sides or the
rarities like IT splash and that stuff for those few Yello freaks like
us...). Pop music is part of our culture; the internet is one way of
preserving it.=20
From all this discussion (and it has been going on for years on this list)
I have the feeling that Yello fans tend to be a bit conservative (due to
age?). Pity, but that seems to be the case.=20
Frustratedly yours
