Subject: (utah-sailing) GSL Dredging
Date: 05 Sep 2003 09:20:26 -0600
To GSL Marina Users;
Dredging goes well. Since the modifcation of the breakwater the
dredge has been able to start reaching the troubled humps (this
does not include the rocks in the mouth of the marina ... see map
at marina office ...).
The channel on the right side of the mouth (as you are leaving the
marina) is now about 6 to 8.5 feet deep.
BUT TAKE NOTE:
#1 The hump on the outside of the marina is still there. The
dredge has made a huge dent on this and will continue to work on
it today.
#2 The hump inside the marina before you make your first turn
is still there. The dredge has made a huge dent on this and will
continue to work on it today.
#3 The rocks are still there. The dredge cannot reach all of
these rocks. We will work on an alternative next Sunday
(volunteers are welcome).
#4 The water is continuing to go down. But the good news is
that we are almost done with water drop this year.
#5 This is not a fix for every boat in the marina. Some will
have to make the tough decision to either be a "Wet Cabin" inside
the marina or pull out of the lake until mother nature switches
patterns back to a wet cycle.
Dredging is scheduled to end this weekend. I will be back in town
early next week and will sound the mouth. At that point I will
make a new map and have it posted along with instructions for the
exiting and entering the marina. Until the USE EXTREME CAUTION AND
YOUR BEST JUDGEMENT ABOUT WHETHER TO ATTEMPT LEAVING AND ENTERING
THE MARINA.
Any questions? plese email me or call me at Sidsports
Thank you

Hello All,
Fall number 1 is scheduled for Saturday 9/13/2003. The nice sailing weather
has finally arrived. I hope that everyone is planning on racing this weekend.
However, we do not have a committee boat. If someone would let me borrow
their boat I would love to committee.

Subject: (utah-sailing) The "Dredge" Report
Date: 08 Sep 2003 18:50:13 -0600
To GSL Marina users;
Just got back into town and it appears, so far, that dredging went
well considering the limitations to be delt with.
I had reports today of boats previously hitting in the mouth that
were able to get out this weekend without hitting.
Weather permitting, I will be sounding the mouth tonight and
working on a new detailed map and instructions tomorrow. This new
map and instructions will be posted a the Rangers Office at the
marina.
BUT TAKE NOTE:
The rocks in the mouth are mostly still there. We will continue
to work on this problem. Please read the instructions posted on
the GSLYC main page (www.GSLYC.org)
Thank You
Dave Shearer

Subject: Re: (utah-sailing) The "Dredge" Report

Dave,
Thanks for the update on the dredging. I'll pass it along to the GSLYC
list.
The hump to the east of center at the mouth of the marina seems to have
been knocked down. I was able to transit the mouth without hitting anything
there. My draft is a little over 5 feet (5'-3" nominal). Jo DeGrado's
Erickson 30 with a nominal 5'-10" of draft still cannot get out. The Olson
30's (5'-1" nominal) have no trouble.
On Saturday I mushed through something inside the marina mouth, in the
center of the channel at about the inner west jetty extended. Motoring out,
I just barely felt it. Coming in, under sail, it almost stopped me. On
Sunday, I continued north past B-dock until I was in the north half of the
channel and had no problem -- I came in on the same route, north of center
after turning east. So there seems to be a mound inside the marina from the
turn of the west jetty and extending out to about center channel. I saw a
C-25 (probably a swing keel) get hung up there.
On Sunday the dredge was working on the area where the hump was,
adjacent to the north jetty -- where you'd hit the north jetty if you didn't
turn after passing B-dock.
Hope you had a nice weekend. The "Sportsfest" thing was a dud.
Apparently very few attended the expo and nobody was interested in hearing
about sailing in Utah on Friday or Saturday.

Bry,
Thanks for your information. We sounded the mouth last night and
we found a path that had a shallow spot of 6' then went to 8'. It
is threading a needle but it worked. We are going to check this
path with "Indigo" tonight. He draws just over 6'.
The hump outside the mouth is gone. This does not include the
rocks though. As I mentioned in last nights email we will have to
continue working on these the hard way.
There are definetely some low spots in the mouth though. This is
all soft mud for the most part and was in areas that the dredge
really couldn't hit.
The good news though is that we should drop very little for the
rest of the year.
I am going to review your information again as I work on this
evenings email announcements and instructions/map that will be
posted at the marina office. There are plans to have a kiosk
installed at the launch ramp so instructions can be posted there
too.
Some other news to note (that will be included in this
evenings "Dredge" report) is that a new red light has been
installed on the breakwater itself. This is a solar powered light
so it will not give us the fits of the last lights. The green
light on the other breakwater should follow soon along with the
flood lights that used to be in the marina (These will take a
little while since we had to tear the mounting post out to modify
the breakwater for the dredge.
Thanks
Dave

Lamenting
Open the window dear.
I let the air into my bedroom now
no longer hot from summer, but cool
with a breeze, like perfume on my skin,
sublime.
The tree branches are moving once again
as the wind passes molecules of
air which only beckons me to the salty lake
who is so thirsty for more and us
Where once I could brighten my day
aboard our thirty foot sloop
my imagination carries me through the eye
of the needle, the marina's mouth,
onto the bed of water I always call home

Dave,
Thank you for the document about the dredging/marina mouth conditions. It was what I neeeded but didn't want to hear. Always hopeful.
Best regards to all.

This bit of seamanship advice comes from Southern California. Back in the
late 80's the south entranace to Marina del Rey was sand shoaled as much 5'
and with ocean tides and currents became very unpredictable. The small boat
racers got very good at entering over this obstacle.
The main boom was always let to run loose and two or three crew members stood
by as the vessel entered. At the right moment the body weight was shifted
onto the out swung main boom, heeling the boat over and lifting the keel to a
minimum draft. This provided a standard 5' draft to enter with a 2.5'
exposure.
Knowing this, it would be good to practice this manuver in case you get a
keel stuck onto a mud flat.

Thank you Dave and Bry for all your information. It is great that people are
staying on top of this. If it keeps one boat from hitting the rocks and
causing damage then it was well worth your time.
I would like to mention two other factors regarding the marina water level
that influenced my decision to pull and sell AirBoss. The first involves B
dock. When I moved AirBoss from B35 on 8/17 there was only 6' of water in my
slip. Moving to E dock gained an additional foot of clearance. Also, at that
time there was only 6.5' of water at the end of B dock where every boat must
pass to get out of the marina. The water level has gone down 4" since that
date so you can do the math to see what the new depths are in and around B
dock.
The other factor, and this was my main concern, was the water depth at the
crane out location between D and E dock. When AirBoss came out on 8/29 she
just scraped the bottom in the end full slip on D dock. AirBoss draws 5.9'
according to the books. The full slip was not a problem for the crane to
reach since AirBoss only weighed 5500 pounds. That could be a factor for
heavier boats, check with the crane people. Had I waited longer to take the
boat out my only option would have been to nose it into the bank and then
have the crane pick it up and drag it through the mud until it could pick
the boat up. Not quite the way I like to treat my keel so I had already
determined the date I needed to be out by so that I had enough water to
avoid that.
I have been keeping a very close eye on the water level all summer long
since I knew it would be a problem for AirBoss. It has been going down an
average of just over an inch per week since June. In the 100 degree days it
went down an inch per five days. It has gone down just over an inch since I
pulled my boat. For an example, if the lake goes down another 7" a Catalina
30 will drag at the crane out slip, roughly 4195'. Will the lake go down
that much this year? Historically it does not stop its decline until the
first part of November. In the past 30 days it has receeded 5". Last winter
the lake only came up a few inches before it started back down in April. The
four National Weather Service people I work with all call for a hotter and
dryer than normal Fall. Same with the Farmer's Almanac. These same people
think that the drought will continue anywhere from 2 to 20 years. That's a
big range but trying to get weathermen to agree or commit is difficult. 2
years is too much though. The last I asked I was told that it was not
possible to dredge any further at the crane out location.
On two other notes. I bought a great trailer from Todd Williamson at Aztec
trailers. Fit the boat very well and it was a fair price. Also, AirBoss had
Micron Ultra sprayed on her hull in the Spring of 2000 in San Diego. She
spent that summer in the ocean, was out of the water for two weeks on her
trip here, and then was only brushed once or twice a year while in the GSL.
When we pulled her out the bottom still looked nearly new and there was no
slime. I had not brushed her off this year. Seemed to be a very nice paint
and it is a hard epoxy that was quite smooth.
Good luck to everyone with boats still in the marina. Let's hope that last
nights snow was the beginning of a very good ski year and that all the
weathermen are wrong.
BTW, you can check my lake numbers at
http://ut.water.usgs.gov/infores/gsl.intro.html The USGS keeps track of the
lake level every 15 minutes and posts them here.

Howdy, Ray.
FWIW, I'm currently using this same technique to get my Catalina 27 TR
under the W. Misson Ave bridge entering Mission Bay when the tide is
between 0 and +1.5. Anything higher than that, I don't dare try.
I really feel for you salty dogs. I do a rain dance for you all at every

Another So Cal bit on seamanship from Rockie.
It appears that there might be some concern from boat owners that if they
wait too long before hauling out they might not be able to. Here are some
suggestions:
When planning to haul out, empty boat to a bare hull. Everything must come
out. In ocean water it is a rule of thumb that every 2k# is 1" of draft, on
40' boats. In the GSL it can add up to 2.5" because of the added salinity.
Then do some experimenting with inner tubes, preferably from truck stops,
that can be girdled under the boat and inflated thus raising the floatation
line several inches.
I realize this seems extreme, but you might find that gaining 5" of freeboard
might make the difference.Groups might even get togeather and make this
makeshift device up and have it ready for any emergency where someone gets
stuck, "real bad".
And don't feel picked on. Back in '87 Lake Tahoe experienced a dry spell
where the north marina was landlocked and even power boats with 3' drafts
were stuck for the season.
cheers,
Rockie

was a substantial lump rising from 8.5 feet to within 4 feet of
the surface. "Island Serenade" and others have been hitting this

Hello Mark,
This storm would not scare me (maybe a little maybe a lot). It would have
excited me!!! I would love to see something like this and sail right into it!!!
I would be at the top of my life and if it killed me I would have died happy.
Brad
