Missing Boater

As Jackie and I were on our way to the Junior Sailing Dinner, we noticed
the storm clouds and the southerly winds just before sunset.  It looked
like Tooele Twisters from I-215.  Names have not been released; perhaps
someone at the Marina has the story and its sad details. I feel it may
be someone we all know. Whether we have met them or not, condolences.

Wow! What a story! What a night this must have been for many people.  I
just got off the phone with Tammy Silver who heard about this e-mailing
from the Prices.  She tells me the man overboard was Jeff Stanfield.
After the Junior's Dinner, Gary and Gretha Record, who were at that
dinner with us, showed up at the Marina and got involved in a night
search for the man/body, which included the State Park Rangers,
helicopters, sailors. Gary and Gretha made a rescue and when and where
others were unable.  Very moving story.  God bless 'em. I hope Tammy or
someone else, (Gretha are you there?) will come on and give a full
accounting of this exciting story.  I feared it was my dear friend and
next-slip-neighbor at K-17, Pete and that the "spirits" had got the best
of him. With great relief,

I have been told that the boat was No Fear.
The crew had little to no sailing experience. This really hurt the situation
because the  SOS went out on Channel 9 not 16. This awful event brings up
many issues: being sure that your crew (partner or otherwise) knows what to
do in an emergency situation, and no matter your personal experience, put on
a life vest if the conditions are rough.
I take many non-sailors out on Photo Flow and I have not ran through the
radio or other emergency issues like I should, this will change. This also
brings up the issues regarding partners (male or female) that should learn
how to handle the boat on their own. I know from experience that this can
become a real concern and potential problem.
This is an awful story and I am still hoping for the best. My thoughts go out
to the families and friends.

If this story doesn't demonstrate the value and necessity of the Ladies
Sailing program then I don't know what does.

I also think the story of the rescue shows that the local knowledge of
the sailing community is a valuable asset when it comes to search and
rescue.  I think Gary and Greta followed a logical course.  Finding a
drifting sailor at night in that ruff of water had little chance of
success.  Given the water is so warm (75+ degrees) and the floatation
component due to the lake's high salinity made the logical course to
search the shore line for a swimmer coming to shore.  Good job Gary and
Greta!    =20

Gene,

By the way he borrowed one of the racing buoys.  luckily he had a knife with
him, so that he could cut the anchor rode and use the bouy to help swim a
shore.  I've been told that he fell off his boat about eight miles out
(pretty long swim).  So, before the next race somebody will need to find out
which bouy is missing.

He also, said that the Ranger boat almost ran him over and the helicopter
shined the spotlight on him several times.  But, the rescue team never saw
him.  I guess it was pretty bad weather and the visibility was poor.

I hope this incident also drives home the deadly seriousness of the
Endurance cup.  Solo sailing is not something to be taken lightly.  I

Subject: (utah-sailing) Concerning the Endurance Cup

I would like the Great Salt Lake race committee to consider changing the date
of this race.  To sometime in September, if possible.  The weather for the
most part is less severe then spring.  The water temperature is usually in
the '70s.  The nights maybe a little chilly.  However, if a sailor went
overboard, they would have a good chance of surviving in the water all night.


In my opinion, I think we're damn lucky to not have lost a life/sailor in
this year's Endurance Cup.

My biggest fear during the Endurance Race was falling off my boat.  The high
winds and waves didn't bother me at all. But what did bother me was the cold
water and being on deck in the high winds.  I was prepared for just about
anything except for falling overboard.  I knew if I went overboard in April
with the water temperature in the 40's, I would not survive.

I'm assuming by Gene's comments that he may be concerned about the same
thing. Maybe not for himself but for others that enter the race.

I would like to see the Endurance Cup continue to be successful for years to
come.  However, I fear if we do not consider changing the date of the
Endurance Cup, it may become the Memorial Cup (hopefully not mine).

I know that a lot of sailors may think I'm being too critical.  But, I also
believe that a good sailor knows when to call it quits and head for safe
haven.

I hope nobody took that wrong. Because, I also realize that everybody has
different skill levels and physical levels.  However, it is important for
every sailor to know and realize what their skill level and physical levels
are. Do not let peer pressure control your decisions.  I realize that this is
very hard.  Because, I deal with it all the time.

One of the hardest decisions I had to make during the Endurance Cup, was to
quit.  I pondered this decision for quite a while. Because,  I was concerned
about what other sailors would say or think (can you believe Brad quit).
But, I was afraid I would become too tired/exhausted and slip or trip and
fall off my boat.  Even though I was wearing a harness the entire time, I
knew that I would not be able to pull myself back on board.

I talked to the Park Ranger at Antelope Marina and the story had a good
ending.  The overboard skipper swam to shore and was found at 3:30 am.

There's some dispute as to where he actually went into the water as the
numbers given in the paper don't add up.  The buoy he used for
floatation was 3 mark which is 3.5 miles from the marina.  The story
inferred he went in the water 10 miles out, swam a half mile to a buoy,
and then rode the buoy to within a couple of miles of shore before
letting go and swimming to shore.  Regardless of the distance, even a
3.5 mile float and swim to shore in those conditions is a pretty
tremendous effort. Gary, Greta, and Stephanie were the ones that found
him near Black Rock.  According to Jeff he was walking into shore when
Stephanie ran out into the waves and helped him to shore.  They drove
him back to the marina.  Jeff said the rescue guys were pretty surprised
when he came walking into the ranger office.

I'm sure Greta can add more details.

All turned out well! This is our story in a nut shell. Stephanie, Gary, and
I were tired of waiting around so we decided to do something. The search
team had started to wind down waiting for daylight. So with the blessing of
the rangers we drove the drove the shoreline to look for ourselves for the
missing sailor. We just happened to be the ones lucky enough
to find him. He said that he had fallen off the boat about 8 miles out and 2
hours before sunset, we found him at 1:30 am. Thing's could have been worse
but he kept his head and swam for shore.
We were driving up the frontage road towards black rock and we could see the
spit out in the distance, there seemed to be a light on it maybe a
reflection, we stopped and started to look and there he was waving his arms
at us he was standing in about 2 feet of water. Stephanie and Gary ran down
to him and helped him up the beach, over the wall, and into the truck where
we gave him water and a blanket.  I called Bob Rosell to let him know we had
found him, he was safe  and that he would be back  in the marina within 5
minutes. So all in all we helped get him to the marina faster than if he had
walked.
After things settled down the 3 of us secured his boat folded sails and
moved it from the courtesy dock back to his slip.

The night ended well, we were happy to be of some help.

Brad makes excellent points not only about changing the Endurance Cup to a
more appealing date, but more importantly, about getting back in the boat
when sailing solo and recognizing one's own limitations. Wearing a harness
and a secure tether is only part of the equation when sailing or racing
solo. Very few people have the upper body strength to pull themselves and
all of their wet clothing (which could add as much as 50 lbs.) out of the
water. This is especially true for women, who generally have less upper body
strength per pound of weight than men (again on average) and for those men
who may be past their prime or who may be carrying a few extra pounds.

I respectfully suggest that every solo sailor have a specific and practiced
plan for getting back into the boat. Obviously, this is a last resort
strategy, and the goal is to stay in the boat under all conditions, and, as
Brad wisely points out, recognize one's own limitations.

A few possibilities to consider making it easier to get back into the boat
include:

Draping a short length of a large diameter, knotted line over the stern.

Having a light aluminum or rope ladder at the stern with a short dangling
line attached such that the ladder can be easily pulled over the stern from
the water in an emergency.

Making simple foot loops out of webbing that can be dropped down the stern
to the waterline when sailing solo.

Once you have a system that works for you, practice getting back into the
boat when fully clothed and wet, and better yet, with full foul weather gear
and boots on. You will quickly discover what improvements need to be made.

I've been following this, and the Man Overboard thread with some
interest.  I have a few suggestions that might be helpful.

Look at it in terms of a "lesson's learned" dialogue:

*    Wear a life jacket always.  The flat out easiest, least
restrictive, least bulky one you can find is a self-inflating waist
belt that turns into a full vest when you pull a rip cord.  At
$79.99, they're great.  If you have one of these, you'll wear it.

*    Wear a strobe in adverse conditions, at night, or in the cold.
They're cheap and effective, and would have gotten last week's MOB
rescued MUCH faster.

*    Wear a harness while alone, in the cold, at night, or in adverse
conditions.  It's more of a pain than the previous suggestions, but
very effective.  But if it's too much trouble, at least use the self-
inflating belt and armband strobe.

*    Practice MOB drills.

*    Show crew how to operate the VHF.

*    Share your float plan with others.

*    Carry extra foulies, water, energy food, and first-aid supplies
onboard.

*    Wear a sharp knife.

*    Travel in groups when venturing out to more remote parts of the
lake.  Particularly if you're inexperienced on the GSL.

I've asked that same question for the last few years and, as near as I
can determine they are not a hazard (assuming we're talking about the
big grayish or brownish spiders). They are a nuisance, but their webs
look pretty cool and are usually full of brine flies & mosquitos. I
say leave 'em, but I'm biased because I'm a day sailor, not a slip
renter.

Subject: (utah-sailing) Commodore's Cup and BBQ

Sailors,
Sunday, September 23, the GSLYC will be hosting the annual Commodore's Cup.
This race is open to all rateable sailboats - non-members are welcome.  The
Skipper's meeting will be held at 8:30a on the Yacht Club patio with racing
commencing at 10:00a.  This is the last in the 2001 Offshore series.  The
course and distance will be announced at the Skipper's meeting.

Fees must be paid before the skipper's meeting and each boat must have an
Informed Consent form on file with GSLYC Race Committee.  (Race committee and
forms available beginning at 8a.)

There will be a barbeque following the race (5:00p) on the patio at the
GSLYC.  The BBQ will be hosted by the GSLYC Commodore and the Board of
Trustees.  Racing or not, everyone is invited!!   So, gather up your crew and
come on out for a great day on the water.

Glen:
I believe that my insurance premium was based on what I paid for may
sail boat (probably assuming I am paying the average price for a boat
like mine).  A lot of boats, like mine, are 20 years old and are no
longer being manufactured.  I am not insured for replacement value.

Sounds like you need to talk to your insurance agent.  The agent at
Allstate seems to be very knowledgeable about sailboats and insuring
them (unlike one insurer I called who kept asking very specific
questions about the motor until I emphasized that this was a sail boat,
and the motor was just an auxiliary form of propulsion).

Most of the 14,500 square miles of the Great Salt Lake Basins study unit =

area covers the 3 major river systems that discharge into Great Salt Lake=
:
the Bear, the Weber, and the Provo/Jordan. The study unit contains Utah=B9=
s
three largest cities (Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Provo) and about 1.6
million people, or 85 percent of the population of the State. Surface- an=
d
ground-water quality along the Wasatch Front is most affected by urban an=
d
industrial land uses and wastewater treatment. Farming and livestock graz=
ing
on irrigated land most affect the water quality in the Bear River basin.

The following water-quality issues have been identified in the Great Salt
Lake Basins:

Effects of stormwater runoff into streams from residential and commercial
urban areas on water quality and aquatic biological communities
Effects of urban and agricultural land use in ground-water recharge areas=
 on
ground-water quality
Changes in aquatic biological communities as a result of changing land us=
e
and non-point pollution
High concentrations of nutrients from livestock grazing, feedlots, and
natural factors that cause eutrophication, the process by which surface
waters increase in biological productivity in response to nutrient
enrichment.

Assessment of most types of water-quality issues for streams, such as
nutrient enrichment or pesticides, requires the measurement of many
characteristics, frequently in multiple media, such as water, sediment, a=
nd
tissues. The Great Salt Lake Basins NAWQA is currently in its sample
collection phase. Ten sites in the Jordan, Weber and Bear River drainages
have been selected for the full suite of chemical, physical and biologica=
l
sampling, which began in the late summer and fall of 1998. Sampling
activities are guided by national protocols to ensure data can be compare=
d
at regional and national scales.

Ground water in the basin-fill deposits of the study area has a range in
chemical quality that is affected by the sources of recharge, the aquifer
material and properties, and the activities of people both at the land
surface and through the use of wells. The deeper aquifers are used for
public supply in urbanized areas and withdrawals must be managed to susta=
in
the resource. More residential and commercial areas are being developed
along the Wasatch Front, primarily at the expense of agricultural areas. =
A
land-use study was done in Salt Lake Valley to better understand some of =
the
effects of recently developed residential/commercial areas on the water
quality of the underlying ground water. Chloroform, most likely from
chlorinated drinking water that has recharged the shallow aquifer, was
detected in 27 of 30 samples. Tetrachloroethene (PCE), usually used as a =
dry
cleaning agent and solvent, was detected in 16 of 30 samples. There is al=
so
evidence of recently recharged ground water and of manmade compounds
occurring in water from deeper aquifers in the study area.

I tried to post this yesterday, but I never saw it appear so I'll try
again.

I currently have ATT service with a Nokia phone. The Nokia is getting to
be a POS, and needs to be repaired or replaced. The ATT service seems to
reach at least 2 miles from the south marina, unlike some services which
don't even seem to get to the marina of the GSL. I've been pretty
satisfied with the ATT service.

I'm considering changing to Verizon if I have to replace the phone
anyway. I know two people that have switched and really like the clarity
of Verizon, or maybe it's the newer phone technology. Does anybody know
how the Verizon coverage is on the GSL?

Personal replies might be appropriate, unless you think this is a topic
other sailors want to hear.

Paul,
    I use Verizon cell phone service and it seems to have the same coverage
as did ATT when I used them (probably uses the same towers).  I get a strong
signal at the GSL south marina and have used it at the Antelope Island
marina.  I haven't used it in between, so I don't know what the coverage is
like out on the lake.  I think that there's a big hole west of Antelope
Island for any of the services.  Incidentally, I use only analog service --
digital coverage may be different.

I have Verizon.  I get good reception at the marina, but I haven't tried

I use Verison, my daughter has AT&T and my wife has Sprint. We have checked
the reception of all phones out on the Lake and it seems my Verison has more
coverage. They are all digital phones. I agree there is a hole west of
Antelope unless you stand by your mast with the phone up in the air? I have
had coverage up to Hat Island, after that it is limited.
