See puck? Get ready to duck=20
By Jay Evensen
Deseret News editorial page editor
The tragedy that befell young Brittanie Cecil, who went with her father=20
to a hockey game in Columbus this month to celebrate her 14th birthday, has=20
been called the first death ever at a National Hockey League game. She was=20
struck in the head by a fast-flying puck that had ricocheted off a player's=20
stick.
She may indeed be the first death, but if so the NHL has been lucky.
You don't have to go far to find people who have been hit by flying=20
pucks at hockey games, some with such devastating force their lives have bee=
n=20
changed forever. You can find them, in fact, right here in Utah.
Sandra Gurr of Davis County is one. A woman in her mid-40s, she hasn't=
=20
eaten a steak in 12 years. That is not because she is a vegetarian. It is=20
because she can't chew anything for long periods of time without suffering a=
n=20
excruciating headache. Those headaches, by the way, are worse than the=20
normal, dull ones she feels virtually every day.
Back on Jan. 30, 1990, a puck smashed into her face, breaking her jaw=20
and several other facial bones during a game between the old Salt Lake Golde=
n=20
Eagles and the Phoenix Roadrunners. It was her first hockey game ever. She=20
had been there less than 10 minutes and had turned her head to look at the=20
Phoenix goalie, the person through whom she had obtained tickets, when the=20
puck struck.
"I remember sitting there having an instant ringing in my ears," she=20
said many years ago when I asked her about it. "I heard a person behind me=20
say she could see blood running down my head. I had an immediate headache an=
d=20
I heard many cracks when it hit my face."
A nurse told her she was lucky. If the puck had hit a quarter inch=20
higher, she would have died, just as Cecil did.
In the weeks since Cecil's death, the NHL has agonized over what to do=
=20
to prevent further tragedies. Already, announcers have increased the number=20
of warnings they give to fans to keep their eyes on the puck at all times.=20
Some officials and pundits have talked about raising the height of the=20
Plexiglas barriers that surround hockey rinks.
That wouldn't have helped Gurr much. She was sitting on the second row=
=20
of the old Acord Arena in the Salt Palace, a place normally well within the=20
protection of the Plexiglas. But some players had smashed into the boards=20
directly in front of her, forcing the seams of two Plexiglas plates to=20
separate just enough for the puck to come at her full force. It hit her so=20
hard she was knocked into the third row, badly bruising her back.
A fluke accident? Undoubtedly. Some people, it seems, have a puck out=20
there with their name on it. Just as some others may have a baseball or a=20
fender or a falling piano that is meant for them. Religious philosophies may=
=20
differ when it comes to explaining this. But sometimes, the seeming=20
randomness of tragedy defies our best efforts to protect people from harm=20=
=E2=80=94=20
or to protect institutions from legal action.
Gurr tried that course, suing Salt Lake County, which ran the Salt=20
Palace arena. That ended in an out-of-court settlement, but it didn't take=20
away the pain.
Perhaps what happened to Gurr was a test of her ability to remain=20
upbeat. In that case, she has passed admirably. At least that's my impressio=
n=20
after talking to her again last week. She described her ordeal as "better=20
than they told me it would be."
That makes you wonder what "they" told her. She said she spent 2 1/2=20
years just trying to get her jaw to open properly. For much of that time, sh=
e=20
couldn't even get a toothbrush inside her mouth, and her food was all liquid=
.=20
She even jokes about that, by the way.
"I still occasionally pull out the bottle," she said. That would be a=20
baby bottle, the kind you suck nourishment through. She's had seven surgerie=
s=20
and really should have an eighth, "but I'm putting that off."
Has she been to another hockey game? Here she doesn't hesitate. The=20
answer is "No," and she has no intention of ever going to one.
"I was supposed to be a volunteer for the Olympics. I was just praying=
=20
that I wouldn't get the hockey venue," she said. She was assigned to curling=
,=20
but she wasn't needed because of an excess of volunteers.
The night after Cecil's death, a puck struck 35-year-old Gyongyi=20
Tokolyi at Madison Square Garden in New York, breaking her nose, cutting her=
=20
deeply and knocking her unconscious.
The truth is, these types of injuries happen fairly frequently. And=20
they don't happen only at hockey games. According to some sources, at least=20
five fans have died from foul balls at professional baseball games through=20
the years. Auto racing has seen its share of tragedy from dislodged tires an=
d=20
other things.
Hockey may indeed find ways to improve safety, but it can't guarantee=20
it. In life, our best bet is to stay alert and hope for the best.

Grizzlies Give Up Loss in Overtime
Tuesday, April 2, 2002
BY BRETT PRETTYMAN
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
WEST VALLEY CITY -- The Utah Grizzlies have adopted a phrase late in their
inaugural AHL season that makes hockey fans cringe. After giving up a goal
in the last 9.2 seconds of overtime in a 2-1 loss to the Houston Aeros
Monday, it was assistant coach Bobby Bassen's turn to toe the line.
"Better now than in the playoffs," Bassen said as the Grizzlies missed on a
chance to move into a tie with Grand Rapids for first place in the West
Division, the winner of which enjoys home-ice advantage when the playoffs
start next week.
Utah (39-28-6-4) trails Grand Rapids by one point with three games left in
the regular season and plays host to the Griffins Wednesday and Friday
before heading to Milwaukee for the season finale Sunday.
Houston (36-26-10-5) is one point behind the Grizzlies and two ahead of
Chicago in one of the tightest playoff races Utah has been a part of. Four
points separate the top four teams in the West Division, and only 13 points
are between the top 10 teams in the Western Conference.
The good news for the Grizzlies: The team managed a point with a squad that
will look vaguely like it will in the playoffs. Young players keep coming up
big as NHL call-ups and suspensions keep Utah's real team from spending much
time together before the playoffs.
Playing his first game with the Grizzlies after being called up in an
emergency situation, Blair Manning set up Steve Gainey with a beautiful pass
that tied the game seven minutes into the third period.
Utah was playing without its two top scorers. Former Aeros defenseman Greg
Hawgood (18 goals, 61 points) was called up by the Dallas Stars on Monday.
Center Jim Montgomery sat out due to the one-game suspension he received for
a high-sticking incident.

NEWSWORTHY
Monday's game against Houston was originally scheduled for Saturday and
would have been the last regular season game at the E Center. A weekend game
combined with a tight playoff race at the end of the season probably would
have put a few extra bodies in the E Center instead an announced crowd of
5,517 caught the game. Maybe the missing fans thought moving the game to a
Monday, NCAA championship Monday no less, was an April Fools joke. In
reality, team managers had little choice but to pick Monday after learning
it would have been virtually impossible to get the team to Milwaukee for the
final game of the season Sunday at 5 p.m. Wisconsin time after playing at
home Saturday.

McLennan stops Grizz in overtime
By Sterling Clifford
Deseret News sports writer
WEST VALLEY CITY - Trailing by two points in the AHL standings, the Utah
Grizzlies may have had their best chance to catch Grand Rapids for first
place in the West Division with Monday night's game against the Houston
Aeros. However, they ran into a little problem named Jamie McLennan.
McLennan, the Houston goalie, shut down the Utah offense and put a big dent
in the Grizzlies chances at a higher playoff seed by stopping 41 of 42 shots
in the Aeros' 2-1 overtime win. The overtime loss keeps Utah one point
behind Grand Rapids, and the win puts Houston just one point behind Utah.
"The one point for us is more important than the two points for them," said
Grizzlies assistant Bob Bassen.
McLennan got plenty of help from his team. Utah was held to just six shots
in the first and third periods combined, but it was the Houston goalie who
made 16 saves in the second period to keep the momentum going Houston's way.
The Aeros took the lead midway through the first, on a hard slapshot by Cory
Larose and held it until the 13-minute mark in the third period.
Grizzly center Blair Manning dumped the puck just inside the crease into
perfect position for Steve Gainey to slide it in the net.
Regulation was a tale of two goalies, each gave up one goal, and both
McLennan and Utah goalie Andrew Allen came up big when they needed to.
McLennan's work was more regular, he stopped 41 shots in the game to Allen's
31. But it was Allen who came up with the more spectacular saves.
"Our guy played really well for us," said Bassen. "He played well last game
and this game, he's a very young player and he's done well."
The overtime period began with a lot of neutral ice play and a lot of
physical contact and ended with just nine seconds on the clock. Houston
defenseman David Cullen fired a desperate shot from the right side of the
net that found its way through Allen's legs for the game-winner.
"We battled too hard to give up a goal like that," said Bassen. "It's
something we are going to have to correct. Better now than in the playoffs."
As of Monday night, just three points separates the top three teams in the
West Division. Grand Rapids leads with 89, Utah is second with 88 and
Houston moves to third with 87 points. Chicago trails Houston by just two.
The good news for the Grizzlies is they have some control over the playoff
picture. Utah faces division-leading Grand Rapids two more times this week.
"We just have to look forward to our next game," said Bassen. "We can't
control what Houston or Chicago does, we can control our next game."

GRIZZLIES 3, GRIFFINS 1
WEST VALLEY CITY -- Four times during this AHL season, the Utah Grizzlies
missed opportunities to overtake or tie Grand Rapids for first place in the
West Division.
The breakthrough finally came Wednesday when the Grizzlies beat the Griffins
3-1 at the E Center.
With two games left in the 80-game season, Utah (40-28-6-4) is in first
place in the West Division, with a chance at claiming the Western Conference
title in its inaugural AHL season. The Grizzlies are one point ahead of the
Griffins (39-27-11-0) and Houston Aeros and just two points behind
conference-leading Syracuse.
Utah, which has not won a division title since the franchise played its
first IHL season in Denver in 1994, can clinch the Bud Poile trophy with
wins Friday against the Griffins and Sunday in Milwaukee.
Jim Montgomery, just back from an eight-game stint with the NHL's Dallas
Stars, sparked Utah's win Wednesday with two goals. He also set up Barrett
Heisten's short-handed tally just 93 seconds into the game.
"I was glad with the position the team was in when I got back. We still have
a chance at first place," said Montgomery. "We should have no problem
getting up for the last two games with home ice at stake."
The Griffins had not lost their last three games against Utah, but recent
scoring problems have cropped up since the team was decimated by injuries
and call-ups by the Ottawa Senators. Grand Rapids dropped its fourth
straight game in front of 6,122 fans.
Grizzlies coach Don Hay attributed the victory to solid checking and
Heisten's early goal. The Grizzlies came out feisty, and it looked as if
that might cost them when Gavin Morgan went to the penalty box just 34
seconds into the game.
Instead, the Grizzlies played even harder and got two short-handed scoring
opportunities during the two minutes when Morgan sat in the box. Cameron
Mann slipped past two Griffin defenders on a short-handed rush 30 seconds
after the penalty, but he was blanked by Grand Rapids goalie Martin Prusek.
Perhaps learning from Mann's failed effort, Heisten went with a high
back-hander 17 seconds later to give Utah the early lead.

Grizz take control in quest for title

WEST VALLEY CITY - When it comes to determining their fate, the Utah
Grizzlies have developed into control freaks. They're leaving little to
chance in their quest to win the AHL's Western Division.
On Wednesday, Utah wasted no time overtaking Grand Rapids for first place.
An early goal lifted the Grizz to a 3-1 victory at the E Center. With just
two games remaining in the regular season - including a rematch with the
Griffins on Friday - the prize is within their grasp.
"If you have an opportunity to move ahead and look after yourself at the
same time it's right now," said Grizz coach Don Hay. "We seized the
opportunity and took advantage of it."
Utah can win the division by prevailing in its home finale and closing the
season on a positive note Sunday at Milwaukee. Should the Grizz falter in
either, they'll lose control of their fate.
"It's right there for us," said Grizz center Jim Montgomery.
At 40-28-6-4, Utah holds a one-point lead over Grand Rapids and Houston. The
division champ is assured of at least a No. 3 seed in the Western Conference
playoffs, while the others could fall as far as seventh. It's more than
enough incentive, Montgomery explained, to keep the Grizz focused.
It worked this time around.
"I thought we did a real good job of collectively checking," said Hay. "We
were able to create turnovers, and we took advantage of our opportunities."
Such was the case early on as Utah garnered a pair of breakaways in a
shorthanded situation less than two minutes into the contest. After coming
up short on the first try, the Grizz capitalized on the second when Barrett
Heisten flicked a shot past Grand Rapids goalie Martin Prusek. Montgomery,
fresh off a stint with the Dallas Stars and a one-game AHL suspension for a
high-sticking incident, assisted on the play.
Just over 10 minutes later, Justin Cox scored (off assists by newcomers
Blair Manning and Brett Draney) to increase Utah's lead to 2-0.
Hay said the early edge was crucial.
"Grand Rapids is such a good defensive team," he explained. "If you can get
the lead you can play your game. If they get the lead, they can play their
game and they really shut people down."
Grizz goaltender Chad Alban, who, like Montgomery, was also returning from a
tour of duty with Dallas, made 15 saves in the decisive first period.
Utah's defense tightened in the second as Grand Rapids managed just three
shots over the first 12 minutes. The Grizz, meanwhile, extended their lead
to three goals with a power-play score at 8:00. Cameron Mann's goal was
assisted by Niko Kapanen and Jeff MacMillan.
After stopping 30 straight shots, Alban's bid for perfection came to an end
with 11:39 to go. That's when Joe Murphy tallied the lone score for Grand
Rapids.
SLAP SHOTS: The attendance was 6,122 . . . The parent Dallas Stars assigned
G Jason Bacashihua to Utah . . . D Vladimir Sapozhnikov, a junior player,
has joined the Grizz . . . G Andrew Allen was sent back to Jackson of the
ECHL . . . D Greg Hawgood was called up by the Stars . . . Former Dallas
general manager Bob Gainey was on hand to watch his son, Steve Gainey, play
left wing for the Grizz.
