Aeros falter against power play=20
Grizzlies exploit man-advantage opportunities for 6-2 victory=20
By SCOTT KAISER=20
Copyright 2002 Houston Chronicle=20
The Aeros' inability to kill penalties, especially at home, came back to =
haunt them Saturday night.=20
Thanks in part to the skills of former Aeros standout defenseman Greg =
Hawgood, Utah lit up the Aeros for a franchise-record-tying four =
power-play goals as the Grizzlies skated off with a 6-2 win before 6,573 =
at Compaq Center.=20
After shutting down Grand Rapids' power play six straight times =
Wednesday and Thursday, the Aeros were picked apart by a Grizzlies unit =
led by Hawgood, who had two assists and was on the ice for every =
man-advantage goal.=20
"We knew going into the game that we had to stay out of the box, but one =
thing led to another, and it seemed like we killed (penalties) half the =
night," Aeros center Shawn Carter said. "We seemed to have trouble =
getting our clearing attempts out, and we wound up digging ourselves =
into a hole. If we kill those four off, it's a whole different game."=20
The Aeros have allowed 39 power-play goals in 165 chances at home, a =
league-worst 76.4 percent success rate. They seem to have the most =
trouble with the Grizzlies, here or in West Valley City, as the =
Grizzlies have converted 13 of 41 chances with the man advantage.=20
"I didn't know that, but it's funny how sometimes it works where your =
power play is better against one team than another," Hawgood said. =
"You're really not doing anything different, so you just kind of ride =
the wave when it comes."=20
As a result of the power-play boon and the goaltending of Wade Flaherty =
(38 saves), the Grizzlies moved a point ahead of the Aeros for second =
place in the American Hockey League West Division.=20
"We've been pretty inconsistent this year on the power play," Hawgood =
said. "It seems like there's no in between. It's either going on all =
cylinders, or it's rotten, and I think it's probably frustrating (for =
the Aeros). They probably thought a few of the calls were questionable. =
But fortunately for us, when we did get the opportunity, we put them =
away ... and early. When you get in such a big hole early on, it's tough =
to climb out."=20
The Grizzlies, who hadn't played since March 1, had scored only four =
goals in their last four games, but they matched that in a 12-minute =
span of the first period. The Aeros led 1-0 thanks to a power-play goal =
by Roman Simicek at 3:58, but the Grizzlies got two power-play goals and =
two weak even-strength goals to take a 4-1 lead into the locker room. =
That prompted Aeros coach Todd McLellan to pull starting goalie Jamie =
McLennan in favor of Derek Gustafson and juggle his lines.=20
The Aeros responded with a solid period in which they put 20 shots on =
Flaherty but skated off the ice trailing 5-1 after allowing another =
power-play goal. The teams exchanged power-play goals in the third =
period to conclude the scoring.=20
"We did play pretty well tonight and made the most of our opportunities, =
but I think you're going to see a different team when we come back (to =
Houston)," Hawgood said.=20
The teams play Thursday and Friday at Compaq Center, and there might be =
a lot of bad blood, especially after Jim Montgomery took a vicious swing =
of his stick at Carter's face and cut him above the left eye late in the =
second period. Aeros general manager Dave Barr, who has 24 hours to =
request a suspension from the league, said after the game he would have =
to look at the video before making a decision.=20
"I really don't want to talk about that," Carter said.=20
The Aeros also might have lost rookie defenseman Travis Roche, who =
dislocated his left thumb in a fight with Gavin Morgan after the final =
whistle.=20

Grizzlies Cruise Behind Montgomery's Hat Trick Monday, March 11, 2002
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE The Olympics lasted just a little too long
for the Utah Grizzlies. The Paralympics might be just the right length.
Sunday's 4-2 victory over the Chicago Wolves at Allstate Arena in Rosemont,
Ill., gave the Grizzlies two victories since having to vacate the E Center
because of the Paralympic sledge hockey tournament. They will play two games
at Houston this week before coming home. The Grizzlies finished 9-6-2
during their 17-game stretch away from the E Center because of the Olympics,
even though they lost the final two games. Sunday, Utah's Jim Montgomery
scored a hat trick in the game's first 33 minutes and goaltender Wade
Flaherty took care of pretty much everything else. Eric Beaudoin scored the
first goal for the Grizzlies, who had to travel from Houston to Chicago and
prepare for a late-afternoon faceoff. What's more, they had struggled to
score against the Wolves all season, and were shut out in their last visit
on Feb. 23. Chicago's two goals came on power plays. Grizzlies 4, Wolves 2

Subject: [UG] Playoffs
I don't agree with the way the seeding is done for the
playoffs. They take the top team in each division and
give them spots 1-3. I don't think that is fair. Here
are the standings as of 3/14:
Western Conference
Team Pts GR
1. *Grand Rapids 83 12
2. *Syracuse 80 12
3. *Philadelphia 75 12
4. Utah 81 11
5. Houston 76 12
6. Chicago 75 11
7. Norfolk 72 12
8. Cincinnati 70 13
9. Rochester 69 13
10. Hershey 69 12
So since Syracuse and Philadelphia are leading their
division, they get to be in 2 and 3 spots. We have more
points than both of these teams but we get shoved down
to 4. So unless we take over Grand Rapids, we can get no
higher than 4.
Wasn't it by points in the IHL?

Subject: [UG] Girl killed by puck at NHL game
13-year-old girl dies after being hit by puck at Blue Jackets' game
By RUSTY MILLER
.c The Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A 13-year-old girl died after being hit in the head by
a puck that was shot over the glass and caromed off another fan at an NHL
game.
Brittanie Cecil died Monday night, two days after she was hurt at the game
between the <A HREF="aol://1722:Columbusbluejackets">Columbus Blue Jackets</A>
and <A HREF="aol://1722:Flames">Calgary Flames</A>, Children's Hospital
said.
It was believed to be the first death of a fan hit by a puck at an NHL game
and one of the few fan fatalities at an American sports event other than auto
racing directly related to action on the field.
``Our fans mean the world to us,'' said Doug MacLean, Blue Jackets general
manager. ``This loss has profound effect on the entire Blue Jackets family.''
The shot by Espen Knutsen of Columbus flew over the high glass at the west
end of the rink, glanced off another spectator and struck the girl in the
head, witnesses said. The slap shot from the left circle appeared to be
deflected by a defenseman's stick.
After being hit, the girl was seen standing with a jacket being held to her
head. She walked with little assistance to an exit.
Teams warn spectators over the public-address system about pucks flying into
the crowd. They also place warnings on scoreboards and on the back of each
ticket.
NHL spokesman Frank Brown said Tuesday he could not recall any other fan
killed by a puck.
He said one NHL player died from injuries in a game. Bill Masterton died Jan.
15, 1968, days after falling.
Although rare, spectators have been killed and seriously injured at hockey
games, particularly in the low minor leagues and the amateur ranks where the
glass is not as high around the rink.
A 21-year-old Canadian man died on March 5, 2000, after being struck by a
shot that flew into the crowd during a South East Manitoba Hockey League game
between Altona and Carman a week earlier.
A 9-year-old girl died in 1979 after being hit in the forehead during another
Canadian game.
In 1984, a 10-year-old boy in Spokane, Wash., was killed when hit with a puck
while watching an exhibition game between the Spokane Eagles and Spokane
Chiefs.
Baseball's Hall of Fame said its records showed at least five deaths of
spectators struck by batted or thrown balls, including 14-year-old Alan Fish
at a <A HREF="aol://1722:Dodgers">Los Angeles Dodgers</A>' game in 1970.
No similar deaths were found in basketball or football.

Panthers recall Flaherty, Thompson
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - The <A HREF="aol://1722:Florida Panthers">Florida
Panthers</A> recalled goalie Wade Flaherty from Utah of the AHL Thursday
after learning starting goalie Roberto Luongo will be out for the season
while rehabbing a torn ligament in his ankle.
Luongo left Wednesday night's 4-1 loss to Montreal with 6:50 left in the
first period with a sprained right ankle. An MRI exam Thursday revealed
Luongo tore a ligament, but would not undergo surgery.
Right wing Valeri Bure will also be out for the season after deciding to have
surgery to repair cartilage damage in his right knee. Bure was injured in a
game March 17 at Ottawa.
``It's disappointing that neither player will be able to return this
season,'' Panthers GM Chuck Fletcher said. ``But it's good news that both
injuries are minor and the long-term prognosis is great for both Roberto and
Val.''
Flaherty, who had 22 wins and a 2.35 goals against average in 45 games for
the Grizzlies, is 25-54-8 in 115 career NHL games with a 3.53 goals against
average. Luongo is 16-33-4 with a 2.77 goals against average this season.
The Panthers also recalled right wing Rocky Thompson of Hershey of the AHL
after right wing Joey Tetarenko injured his back.
Thompson had three assists and 139 penalty minutes in 39 games for the Bears
while Tetarenko had no points and 121 penalty minutes in 31 games with the
Panthers this season.

I watched Luongo get injured the other night. I thought it was only a matter
of time before Flats was recalled. The good thing though is that it doesn't
look like Florida will make the playoffs. That means Wade should be back with
us shortly. I have every confidence in Alban.
Dallas is also on the line as far as playoffs. Maybe we'll get all of our guys
back just in time for us to make our playoff surge.

AHL announces Clear Day rosters
The American Hockey League has released the clear day
rosters for each of its 27 member clubs. Each clear day
roster consists of a maximum of 22 players.
Only those players listed on a team's clear day roster
are eligible to compete in the remaining three weeks of
the AHL regular season and in the Calder Cup 2002
Playoffs, unless emergency conditions arise as a result
of recall, injury or suspension. The complete list of
clear day rosters is below.
Twenty of the 27 teams will qualify for the postseason,
with a round of best-of-three qualifying series
determining the 16-team field for the Calder Cup 2002
Playoffs, beginning in the second week of April. The
conference quarterfinals will be best-of-five, and the
remaining three rounds will be best-of-seven.
For complete qualification rules and up-to-date
conference seedings, as well as for Calder Cup history,
records and championship rosters, visit caldercup.com.
The AHL's championship trophy is named after Hockey Hall
of Famer Frank Calder, who served as the first president
of the National Hockey League from 1917-43. During the
1920s, Calder was instrumental in guiding professional
hockey into the mainstream of the United States, major
cities, including New York, Boston, Chicago and Detroit,
while also helping in the formation of the American
Hockey League.
More than 100 players and coaches have won both the
Calder Cup and the Stanley Cup during their careers,
including Patrick Roy, Doug Harvey, Terry Sawchuk,
Johnny Bower, Martin Lapointe, Adam Graves, Bill Barber,
Al Arbour and Bob Hartley.
