THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The 32nd year of professional hockey in Utah
starts tonight when the Utah Grizzlies open the 2001-02 AHL season against
the Grand Rapids Griffins.
The AHL is the fourth league for a Utah hockey team. That's not the only
change from last season. Utah has a new coach, a new and stronger affiliation
with the Dallas Stars of the NHL and 13 fresh faces on its roster after
missing the playoffs for the second time in three years.
Defense: During the Dallas Stars training camp, 33-year-old Greg Hawgood
looked around the locker room and realized he was the oldest defenseman. His
assignment to Utah only made the difference greater.
The Grizzlies start the season with five defenseman under age 23. Only
Hawgood, Mark Wotton, John Erskine and Jeff MacMillan have more than one year
of professional experience.
"As a young forward, you can get away with making mistakes, but its
different for defensemen. You are so close to the net and the puck always
seems to go in if you make an error," Hawgood said. "I'm here to provide some
leadership and try to help the young guys out. We have some young players
here, but they are high draft picks with a lot of potential.."
Goalies: With Wade Flaherty assigned to Utah by Florida, the Grizzlies
get one of the best goalies outside of the NHL.
"I'm a firm believer that a goaltender goes as well as his team goes in
front of him. At the same time, I am comfortable here because I played in
Utah before and that helps my confidence," Flaherty said.
Flaherty will be especially important through the first 10 to 15 games as
the team searches for an identity and coach Don Hay figures out the best line
combinations.
"It helps to have an experienced goalie early in the season, because he
can help direct the play and communicate with the players on the ice what is
going on," Flaherty said.
Chad Alban proved a worthy backup to Mike Bales last year, so much so
that Dallas decided to sign him for that role in Utah again.
Coaching: This could be the biggest difference from last year. Former
coach Bob Bourne expected players to put the pressure to succeed on
themselves. It worked two years ago when the team was full of veteran players
hungry for a championship, but young players need direction.
Hay's greatest success came at the junior level. He puts the pressure
directly on the players and lets them know there will be consequences if they
don't perform every night. Some of the players assigned to Utah last year
took advantage of the fact Bourne was hired by and paid by the Grizzlies.
Things are different with Hay and assistant Bob Bassen in charge. "There
is no misinterpretation now. Don is here and he is a Dallas guy," Wotton
said. "Last year, some players didn't think Bob was getting the information
back to Dallas, but obviously he was, because a lot of those players aren't
here this year."

Grizzlies shut out Griffins in opener=20
By Mark Newman=20
Deseret News special=20
GRAND RAPIDS =E2=80=94 On the opening night of their 2001-02 season, t=
he Utah=20
Grizzlies proved one thing: This is not the same hockey team of the past few=
=20
seasons.
Behind the rock-steady goal tending of veteran Wade Flaherty and a=20
tenacious, balanced scoring attack, the Grizzlies tore apart the Griffins 3-=
0=20
in front of a sellout crowd of 10,834 at Van Andel Arena.
"We played a pretty solid game," said Utah coach Don Hay. "We played=20
with energy and worked hard. When we made a mistake, Wade was there to help=20
us out."
Utah had been winless in seven previous visits to West Michigan while=20
the Griffins were a perfect 5-0 all-time in season openers, but the Grizzlie=
s=20
showed that playing in the American Hockey League isn't the only change this=
=20
season.
Gavin Morgan set the tone by registering a Gordie Howe hat trick (a=20
goal, an assist and a fighting major) as the Grizzlies clearly were the=20
aggressors in the first two periods.
"Gavin's a real character-type player," Hay said. "He really competes=20
and doesn't take any time off. He knows only one way to play and that's=20
hard-out all the time."
Both teams had a pair of power-play chances in the opening period, but=
=20
it was a lucky bounce and a case of being in the right place at the right=20
time that gave the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead 3:43 into the game.
Morgan was in perfect position when the puck took a strange bounce off=
=20
the stick of Griffins goaltender Mathieu Chouinard, whose luck has apparentl=
y=20
changed from a year ago when he was 11-1-0 with a 1.75 goals-against average=
=20
on home ice.
"I was chasing the puck and it just popped off the goalie's stick,"=20
Morgan said. "I was lucky to be right there and the puck bounced right to me=
."
The Grizzlies extended their lead to 3-0 in the second stanza by=20
scoring twice within the space of 6:38 on similar plays. Morgan strung a=20
clothesline pass to Cameron Mann, who outskated the Griffins' defense and=20
undressed the helpless Chouinard just 27 seconds into the period.
Utah scored again at the 7:05 mark on a play that was almost a mirror=20
image of its second goal when Greg Hawgood's pass found Marcus Kristoffersso=
n=20
streaking up the left side. Kristoffersson caught Chouinard napping, and the=
=20
Grizzlies were suddenly up by what proved to be the final margin.
Flaherty used the third period to demonstrate why he has seen action i=
n=20
nine NHL seasons. The 33-year-old goalie made a gorgeous glove save on a=20
point-blank James Black shot, then minutes later made a perfect pad save=20
against an on-rushing Toni Dahlman.
"I felt good," Flaherty said. "I thought we played a great game=20
defensively. I saw 90 percent of the shots and if I can see the puck, I'm=20
pretty comfortable stopping them."
Even so, Hay said he hadn't decided on his goalie for the contest=20
against the Chicago Wolves on Saturday. "Wade will probably start two-thirds=
=20
of our games this year, but it's a long season and we need to have two=20
goalies."

Brown, Maltais spark Wolves to victory in AHL debut
By Mike Spellman Daily Herald Sports Writer
Posted on October 07, 2001
On a night celebrating the new - new league and new team - it was a couple of
old reliables who proved the difference Saturday as the Chicago Wolves topped
the Utah Grizzlies 4-2 in front of 10,015 in the season opener at the
Allstate Arena.
Playing with a young, energetic cast of characters, Rob Brown and Steve
Maltais - holdovers from last year's team - provided the key goals and
veteran goalie Norm Maracle was a rock in the net in the team's first game as
a member of the 27-team American Hockey League.
"That was like a playoff game," said Wolves coach John Anderson. "Both teams
played exceptionally well."
The Wolves had quite a different look team from the older, plodding teams of
years past. The game was not only faster, but it featured more hitting than
the backseat of the family wagon on the final leg of a cross-country trip.
Brown netted the game-winner at 6:23 of the third period. Defenseman Dallas
Eakins set things in motion by sending the puck behind the Grizzlies net to
Jarrod Skalde, who flipped it out front to Brown for a one-timer.
"We've been practicing a lot of different plays from the point, and on that
one Eaks made a nice play downs to Skalde in the corner and I just tried to
get to an opening and fortunately Skalds' put it right on my stick," Brown
said.
The second period opened with the Wolves on a 5-on-3 power play advantage.
Seven seconds after the drop of the puck, Maltais did what he does best -
score. He took the puck off the faceoff, skated into Utah's zone alone, and
zipped one high past Grizzlies goalie Chad Alban to give the Wolves a 2-1
lead.
On an ensuing power play, the Grizzlies pursued the Wolves like salmon in
spawning season. The hunt paid off at 4:34 when Mark Wotton deflected in a
shot from the point off the stick of John Purves.
But the young Wolves battled back and were helped by the solid play of
Maracle (31 saves), playing his first game in the Allstate Arena since last
spring when he helped guide the Orlando Solar Bears past the Wolves in the
Turner Cup Finals.
"I was a little nervous out there," Maracle admitted. "There's a little
pressure here because all the fans expect me to play like I did last year. I
just wanted to go out there and have fun, and that's what I did."
"Normy's a rock in there," Wolves coach John Anderson said. "We're very
fortunate to have a goaltender of his caliber, and he's just going to get
better."
Zdenek Blatny is now the answer to the trivia question: Who was the first
Wolves player to score in an AHL game?
J.P. Vigier's finished up the scoring with an empty-netter in the waning
seconds.
"Everybody put their two cents worth in, even the guys who only played a few
shifts." Anderson said. "That's what you want to see as a coach."

THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE=20
ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Borrowing a line from Forrest Gump, Utah =
Grizzlies coach Don Hay described his first season with the franchise as =
a box of candy with all kinds of choices.=20
Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Chicago Wolves in front of more =
than 10,000 fans was the piece he took one bite out of and put back in =
the box.=20
The Wolves played physically against the young Grizzlies and =
it appeared to work. "We were back on our heels a little bit," Hay said. =
The confidence from Friday's season-opening win at Grand =
Rapids oozed out of the Grizzlies with every Wolves check. "In a couple =

team captain Mark Wotton.=20
Hay broke hockey protocol by starting goalie Chad Alban in =
favor of Wade Flaherty, who posted a 32-save shutout Friday. Coaches =

But Hay is into sending messages: "We just wanted to say Chad =

Hay also may have considered the fact Alban spoiled Chicago's =

The loss was certainly not Alban's fault. Flustered by the =
Wolves, Utah lost the high level of execution it displayed Friday. Part =
of the problem is the Grizzlies' lack of toughness.=20
When things get physical, few players have the bodies or the =
experience to defend themselves and their teammates. Second-year =
defenseman John Erskine is capable of playing a physically dominating =
game but is still learning how and when to do it.=20
After Erskine comes the feisty 5-foot-10, 175-pound Gavin =

can be 'team tough,' " Wotton said. "To the man, we can play the body =
better than we did. It is certainly something we can improve on."=20
Maybe young defenseman Dan Jancevski is ready to contribute. =
He showed no fear in dropping the gloves with Chicago's Dan Plante with =
less than two minutes left in the game.=20
While the Grizzlies may not be tough, they do have power. Utah =
finished the game with two power-play goals and now has three in two =
games. Steve Gainey scored his first goal of the season, batting a puck =
out of the air and past Wolves goalie Norm Maracle six minutes after =
Chicago scored its first goal in AHL history in the first period.=20

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Borrowing a line from Forrest Gump, Utah =
Grizzlies coach=20
Don Hay described his first season with the franchise as a box of =
candy=20
with all kinds of choices.
Saturday's 4-2 =
loss to=20
the Chicago Wolves in front of more than 10,000 fans was the piece =
he took=20
one bite out of and put back in the box.
=
The Wolves=20
played physically against the young Grizzlies and it appeared to =
work. "We=20
were back on our heels a little bit," Hay said. =
The=20
confidence from Friday's season-opening win at Grand Rapids oozed =
out of=20
the Grizzlies with every Wolves check. "In a couple of aspects, we =
were=20
not ready mentally at the start of the game," said team captain =
Mark=20
Wotton.
Hay broke hockey protocol by =
starting=20
goalie Chad Alban in favor of Wade Flaherty, who posted a 32-save =
shutout=20
Friday. Coaches traditionally play a goalie riding a shutout in =
the next=20
game.
But Hay is into sending messages: "We =
just=20
wanted to say Chad is an important part of our team and everybody =
will get=20
a chance to to contribute," Hay said. "It was not a reflection on =
anything=20
Wade did."
Hay also may have considered the =
fact=20
Alban spoiled Chicago's season opener last season at Allstate =
Arena while=20
playing for Grand Rapids.
The loss was =
certainly=20
not Alban's fault. Flustered by the Wolves, Utah lost the high =
level of=20
execution it displayed Friday. Part of the problem is the =
Grizzlies' lack=20
of toughness.
When things get physical, few =
players=20
have the bodies or the experience to defend themselves and their=20
teammates. Second-year defenseman John Erskine is capable of =
playing a=20
physically dominating game but is still learning how and when to =
do it.=20
After Erskine comes the feisty 5-foot-10, =
175-pound=20
Gavin Morgan. Chicago has two players who accumulated more than =
400=20
penalty-minutes last season.
"If toughness =
is going=20
to be one of our weaknesses, then we can be 'team tough,' " Wotton =
said.=20
"To the man, we can play the body better than we did. It is =
certainly=20
something we can improve on."
Maybe young=20
defenseman Dan Jancevski is ready to contribute. He showed no fear =
in=20
dropping the gloves with Chicago's Dan Plante with less than two =
minutes=20
left in the game.
While the Grizzlies may =
not be=20
tough, they do have power. Utah finished the game with two =
power-play=20
goals and now has three in two games. Steve Gainey scored his =
first goal=20
of the season, batting a puck out of the air and past Wolves =
goalie Norm=20
Maracle six minutes after Chicago scored its first goal in AHL =
history in=20
the first period.
Wotton added a power-play =
goal=20
early in the second period to tie the game, but the Wolves got a=20
power-play goal of their own six minutes into the third period.=20
