 As team captain of the men's hockey team for the United States at the
1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, Chris Chelios experienced the
weight of embarrassment and the disappointment of failure.
 Chelios will get a chance to erase those emotions and replace them with
the honor of wearing the 'C' on his U.S. jersey on American soil in
February.
 Chelios told the Salt Lake Tribune Monday that Team USA coach Herb
Brooks has asked the 39-year-old Detroit Red Wing to act as captain for
the 2002 Games in Salt Lake. "What was done in Nagano was unfortunate
for everybody, but that is over," Chelios said in reference to the
trashing of several Olympic Village rooms by U.S. hockey players during
the Nagano Games. "I guarantee something like that will not happen
again. It was a great honor in Nagano and it will be a great honor in
Salt Lake."
 To help the U.S. reach the medal round at the 2002 Games, something NHL
players failed to do in Japan, Chelios said he would like to see the NHL
Players' Association lighten up on some restrictive rules imposed on
Olympic training camps being held by the U.S. and Canadian teams.
 The NHLPA had been sticking to rules agreed upon by all parties at the
1999 World Hockey Championships that would limit the real camp time to
just 48 hours and keep coaches off the ice if players not yet named to
the Olympic team were in attendance.
 The rules angered Brooks. "Any sane person with a knowledge of sports
and athletes knows you can't do anything in 48 hours. This is the
Olympics we are talking about. I'm in disbelief, I'm disillusioned and
I'm frustrated. This is unreasonable and crazy," Brooks told the Tribune
in a July 21 story.
 Apparently, the players agree. "There was a conference call with 8-10
players and [NHLPA executive director] Bob Goodenow and we told him that
we wanted to put as much time as we could into preparing for Salt Lake,"
he said. "We are willing to give up four days because the Olympics are
in North America and it presents such a great opportunity for us."
 Chelios said the camp is vital for the U.S. and Canada to learn ways to
adapt to the larger ice sheet used in the Olympics - international size
ice sheets are 15-feet wider than those used in NHL buildings. "We
didn't think it would be that big of an advantage for the European teams
going into the Nagano Olympics," said Chelios, a defenseman. "But it is
a different game. It is much harder to clog things up because of the
extra footage. The Europeans know how to use that extra ice because they
grew up on it."
 USA Hockey is holding its Olympic orientation meeting Sept. 4-7 near
its headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo. Fourteen players have
already been named to the Olympic roster and several more could be added
before the camp. Brooks has stated he is not against inviting more
players to the camp than will make the 23-man roster for the 2002 Games.

 Chelios, who will be 40 when the NHL breaks to allow its best players
to compete for their countries in February, said he can't imagine a more
powerful emotion than he will feel during the Olympics. "Maybe Herb is
using the Grandfather clause to pick his captain," Chelios joked. "But
to be chosen as captain of the team hosting the Olympics is a tremendous
feeling. Every guy on the Olympic team is a leader on his NHL team and
they all deserve to be the captain."

Hockey season is nearly upon us and the Growlin' Grizzlies Booster Club has
some great activities planned for this year.  We need lots of help.  If

Activities
One of our first assignments from the Grizzlies office is to provide toys
for the children's playroom at the E-Center.  There are lots of little kids
this year and there are no toys for them to play with while at the E
Center.  We will be collecting toys for the play area at the Cherry Hill
picnic and at the Player's picnic.  The toy can be for any age child and
doesn't need to be expensive or new (as long as it is in good, clean
condition).

Our first activity for the year is the Potluck picnic at Cherry Hills.  The
picnic will be Saturday, September 8 (THIS WEEKEND!) at the Cherrywood
Pavilion.  The cookout starts at 5:00 p.m.  Please bring a potluck salad or
dessert.  Meat and drinks will be provided.  We will be having a raffle and
auction.  This is a great opportunity to meet other members of the Booster
Club and to pay your dues for the year (as they will be increasing in
November!)  Don't forget to bring a toy for the playroom!

Our annual Player's Picnic will be held at the end of September (hopefully
September 30).  This is the first opportunity to meet the players who will
be playing for us during the season.  These players are still in the middle
of training camp, but by that time we should have a good idea of who will
be staying.  This picnic is also potluck and meat and drinks will be
provided.  This is another great opportunity to bring a toy for the kids'
playroom.

Other activities we are planning for this year are:
Family Friendly Halloween Party - October
Annual Wives Luncheon - November (you must be a member to attend this one,
and it's ladies only!)
Christmas Party with the team - December (you have to be a member to come
to this one, too!)

Community Stuff
Last year we tried to expand our community involvement by getting involved
with several charities in the area.  This year we're hoping we can get out
into the community even more.  We have projects planned to aid the Utah
Food Bank, Homeless Shelters, Angel's Hands Foundation, the Grizzlies
Children's Charities and Project Smile.

The first or second game of the season we will be making a donation to the
Grizzlies Children's charities.  Watch for us out on the ice during an
intermission!

We'll be putting together packets of information about our community for
the new team.  We want to help our guys navigate our city.

Around Thanksgiving time, we will be helping the Utah Food Bank with their
turkey drive.  We'll contact you later to let you know more details.

Sometime in March, we will be helping Rod Miller do another Skate Away
Hunger marathon.  Rod skated 1000 laps around the E-Center ice to raise
money for the Utah Food Bank.  This is a HUGE project and we could use
everyone's help.

We plan to help out at homeless shelters during the Christmas season and
will be making quilts for Project Smile.

Throughout the year, we'll also be doing numerous raffles and auctions to
raise money for Angel's Hands Foundation, a charity organization that helps
kids like Matt K. get the medical care and supplies they need to deal with
a disease that is difficult to treat.

Islanders give Yashin richest contract in NHL history
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- Alexei Yashin agreed to the biggest contract package
in NHL history Wednesday, a 10-year deal with the New York Islanders worth
nearly $90 million.
The 27-year-old Russian center had given up millions by sitting out an NHL
season in Ottawa.
"It's a privilege for me to know that I will be spending the rest of my
career on Long Island," he said at a news conference.
The deal eclipses the one the Colorado Avalanche gave Joe Sakic in July --
five years, $50.5-million. The Avalanche have an option for a sixth year
that would increase the package to $57 million.
Washington's Jaromir Jagr will make $20.7 million over the next two seasons,
making him the highest-paid player by annual salary.
Yashin, who earned $3.6 million last season with Ottawa, will report to
training camp Tuesday in Lake Placid, N.Y.
"To add a player of Alexei's caliber means great things for this hockey
club," general manager Mike Milbury said.
Yashin had 40 goals and 48 assists with the Senators last season. He managed
only one assist as Toronto swept Ottawa in the first round of the playoffs.
He sat out the previous year after Ottawa declined to give him a lucrative
pay increase. In 1998-99, he scored 44 goals and had 50 points and was a
finalist for the league's MVP award.
The 6-foot-3 center has proved durable. He did not miss a game in any of his
last four seasons.
The two-time All-Star represented Russia in five world championships,
including 1993 when his team won the gold medal. Yashin won an Olympic
silver medal in 1998.
Ottawa traded Yashin for the No. 2 entry draft pick and selected teen-ager
Jason Spezza. Forward Bill Muckalt and defenseman Zdeno Chara also went to
the Senators.

Let's see, after taxes, that's approximately $6,750,000 per year.  That's
RIDICULOUS!  No one can live on that!  And you have to account for health
care, car payments, utilities, and what if he wants to buy a house or
seven???  That doesn't leave enough money for beer!  What a crappy deal.
Sure beats $2 mil or $3 mil or $5 mil or whatever he was making before!
Sure was a good thing he held out for a year.

HEY YASHIN!  I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU!  IT WOULD TAKE MOST OF US 75 YEARS TO PAY
THE TAXES ON ONE YEAR'S WORTH OF YOUR SALARY!

I'm really tired of hearing that these athletes are worth so much money.
What do they do that's worth more than the rest of us?  I think I'll stick
with my favorites who are minor league nothings, who make nothing, but go
out and play their guts out night after night.  See ya Yashin.  I hope you
enjoy being the Golden Boy of an organization going nowhere.  And until the
Islanders get rid of one big albatross they're a sinking ship.  I wouldn't
be surprised if this move is what does them in for good.  Maybe that's why
the Islanders offered him such a good deal.  They knew they wouldn't be
around to pay up.
