didn't warrant more than 1 game. He did have to sit out one though.

Subject: [UG] NHL Agrees to Random Drug Tests for Olympic Players
NHL Agrees to Random Drug Tests for Olympic Players
Thursday, March 8, 2001
BY BRETT PRETTYMAN
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
The NHL is willing to have players named to Olympic hockey teams undergo
random drug testing before the 2002 Winter Games in Utah, as long as a
single group handles the tests.
"It is important to me on behalf of the league that the same set of
procedures and same protocols apply to all NHL players, regardless of what
country they are from, so there is no conflicting messages and conflicting
protocols," said Bill Daly, the NHL's vice president and chief legal
officer. "That is what this has been about from the start. There has been no
effort or attempt or expectation to evade out-of-competition testing. [NHL
players] have always been subject to it and we will always be subject to
it."
Daly spoke Wednesday after meeting with officials of the NHL Players
Association, the International Olympic Committee and International Ice
Hockey Federation in Salt Lake City.
Daly also wants time to educate players about the testing procedure.
Countries have been in charge of testing their own national team players
for banned substances, except during competition. NHL players were exempt
from out-of-competition drug testing during the Nagano Olympics in 1998, but
a number of them took and passed drug tests administered by the IOC in
Japan.
The U.S. Olympic Committee recently announced that professional athletes
on Olympic teams would be subject to the random tests for steroids and drugs
that mask steroids. The IIHF and IOC are pushing for one group -- the World
Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) -- to handle the testing for all hockey players.
WADA has reached an agreement to handle testing with all 28 international
Summer Olympic sport federations and has already started testing athletes in
five of the seven winter federations. Hockey and figure skating are
negotiating with WADA.
"The NHLPA and NHL are ready to follow the rules. They have no problem
with that," said Rene Fasel, president of the IIHF, the international
governing body of ice hockey. Fasel's problem now is convincing national
bodies, such as the USOC, to agree that the drug testing should be handled
by WADA. That starts today in Salt Lake City in a meeting with the USOC and
U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. The NHL and NHLPA, as well as USA Hockey, will also
attend. Fasel will travel to Sweden next week for more discussions.
USA Hockey announced last week that it would not name players for the
2002 Olympics until the doping matter was resolved. Countries have until
March 25 to name the first eight to 12 players for their 2002 hockey teams,
but Fasel said that deadline doesn't mean anything to the IIHF. "We only
need the names by December 22," he said.
"This is not a timing problem," said Dr. Patrick Schamasch, director of
the IOC medical commission. "The IIHF wants to be sure players will be
tested by only one body, which would be WADA. It is about homogenization; to
help the athletes and the movement of the Olympics."
Daly said he was still hopeful that countries could feel comfortable
enough to name their first players to the 2002 Winter Games by March 25.
The league would accept random testing of named players during the NHL
playoffs, but "my preference would be to have it deferred until after the
playoffs," Daly said. "Only from the perspective of focus. Not from an
anxiety of failing, but preparation for the playoffs being the primary
focus."
Ted Saskin, senior director of the NHLPA, said no one was looking for
any favors. "No special rules apply to NHL players," he said. "The players
are participating in the Olympics on the same basis as other athletes; they
are staying in the village. It is important to the athletes that they
compete on the same basis and random testing is random testing. We would
like to see one uniform standard and that is the goal of WADA. We are
supportive of that and may take some time for that to happen."
Saskin said NHL players are not afraid of the testing. "Our players have
participated in many World Championships and have been tested hundreds of
times. We don't have a problem in our sport, not that I am aware of," he
said. "Our players have never been positive for any prohibited substances."
According to the IOC, three hockey players have been part of doping
cases since the 1972 Winter Olympics. The latest case was in the 1988 Games
in Calgary.

Grizz Hibernating, Give Away Game
Monday, March 12, 2001
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
WOLVES 2, GRIZZLIES 1
At some point, the Utah Grizzlies will have to show they actually want
to make the IHL playoffs. Soon, it may be too late.
Utah gave up its league-leading 13th short-handed goal in a
lackadaisical effort with 1.7 seconds left in the second period Sunday and
lost 2-1 to the Chicago Wolves at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.
Chicago (30-28-7) has tied Utah (31-32-5) with 67 points in the Western
Conference standings, and the defending Turner Cup champions have played
three fewer games.
The only good thing for Utah about Sunday's loss was the end of a 1-4-1
trip, during which the Grizzlies gave up three short-handed goals.
Utah does have a favorable schedule with only four of its remaining 14
games on the road and seven in a row at the E Center to close the regular
season. But with Milwaukee in position to cross over from the Eastern
Conference and steal the West's fourth playoff berth, the Grizzlies must
stop the turnovers that killed them Sunday.
The Wolves capitalized on an errant pass in the Utah end just five
minutes into the game when Steve Maltais scored on Grizzlies goalie Mike
Bales. Apparently awakened by the goal, Utah proceeded to fire 14 straight
shots at Wolves goalie Wendell Young.
Team captain John Purves scored on one of those shots during a 4-on-3
power play at the 13:42 mark. But for the third time during the trip, Purves
was the lone Grizzly to score.
Instead of capitalizing, Utah produced just seven shots in the final 40
minutes. Two came in the final 30 seconds, as the Grizzlies tried to tie the
game.
With former Grizzlies skater Paul Kruse in the penalty box for
unsportsmanlike conduct, Utah was on a power play late in the second period.
With time winding down, Chicago stole the puck and broke for the other
end as the Grizzlies watched, hoping the buzzer would sound. Instead, Dan
Plante, another former Grizzly, beat Bales for a short-handed goal, the game
winner.
The Grizzlies have the week off before meeting West co-leader Manitoba on
Saturday at the E Center.
