Early Hibernation: Aeros rally from 2-goal deficit to eliminate Grizz
Thursday, May 4, 2000
BY BRETT PRETTYMAN
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
WEST VALLEY CITY -- Going into the IHL's Western Conference semifinals
against the Houston Aeros, the Utah Grizzlies said the regular season would
mean nothing if they lost in their first playoff series.
Get out the erasers.
The Aeros, acting like defending champions, came back from a two-goal
deficit and scored three in a row to beat the Grizzlies 3-2 at the E Center
on Wednesday and clinch the best-of-seven series, 4-1. Houston advances to
face Chicago in the conference finals.
"I don't have any answers," Utah Coach Bob Bourne said. "I don't want to
point fingers. They outplayed us to the man. I never thought we would lose.
I felt we were still in the series. We got caught doing bad things at bad
times."
Actually, the answers are easy and plentiful:
-- Utah, which finished the regular season with the second-highest goal
total in the IHL, scored five goals in five games. "The way we scored goals
and how easy they came during the season, I don't know," Grizzlies' regular
season scoring leader Jarrod Skalde said about the impotent playoff offense.
-- Utah's seven top scorers during the regular season combined for two
goals and two points.
-- The Grizzlies lost two of the five games at home, a major no-no in
the playoffs.
-- After winning Game 1, the Grizzlies lost four in a row. "I never
would have guessed it," team captain Micah Aivazoff said. "Theyplayed their
game the entire series. We never found ours."
-- Utah led three games in the series, but won only one. "It started two
months ago," Skalde said. "We didn't have that killer instinct. It happened
again tonight. It builds up after you do it [give up the lead]. You lose
your confidence."
-- Undisciplined play by the Grizzlies led to four power-play goals for
the Aeros. "When you try to play physical, you take it overboard sometimes,"
Skalde said. "They stood back and took everything." Aivazoff added: "They
never retaliated and we never initiated."
Utah's Zarley Zalapski scored 5:31 into the first period on a seemingly
harmless shot, but with three Grizzlies in front of the net, Houston goalie
Frederic Chabot never even saw it.
Gavin Morgan, a rookie, broke through three Aeros at the blue line and
beat Chabot with a high wrist shot on the glove side seven minutes later.
Physical forward Paul Kruse was a major factor in the two goals, earning an
assist on each.
Then, the Grizzlies reverted to the physical thing. Kruse went to the
penalty box for high sticking late in the first period. His infraction
seemed innocent enough, but the way the referees have been calling the
series, Kruse should have expected it.
"They tried to be physical against us and that, to me, is the best way
teams can play against us because it wakes us up," Houston Coach Ron Low
said. "We are a way better hockey team when we have people running at us and
in our face."
David Oliver beat Corey Hirsch on the power play and the lead was down
to one. Ten minutes into the second period, Terry Marchant one-timed a pass
from behind the net, and the score was tied and the Utah collapse began.
Three minutes into the third, Utah defensemen Darcy Werenka and Taj
Melson both decided to go after Houston forward Mark Lamb. They left the
puck in front of the crease and Dave Hymovitz sailed in and made a deke
before lifting a backhander past Hirsch.
Werenka had a tough series. He finished the season as the Utah leader in
the plus-minus category with a plus-26. Werenka was a minus-6 in the
playoffs. That means he was on the ice for six of the 11 goals the Aeros
scored.
"Everyone makes mistakes, but when we did, it ended up in our net,"
Bourne said. "At the beginning of the series, I didn't think their playoff
experience last year would matter. Looking back, it did."
For most of the Grizzlies, it was the last time they wore a Utah jersey.
A pending announcement on an affiliation with the Dallas Stars of the NHL
will bring eight to 10 skaters and two goalies to the Grizzlies next season.
Bourne said he would talk to each of the players individually after the
game. "I always say you have to learn how to lose to learn how to win," he
said.
For Aivazoff, the loss wipes away a decent season for the Grizzlies.
Utah finished the season 45-25-12 and earned a first-round bye in the
playoffs, one season after not making the playoffs. "Your year is always
judged by the playoffs," he said. "We had a good regular season, but it is
pretty disappointing to lose four in a row and be eliminated that way. That
is how I will remember the season."

Here's how I see it: The Grizz weren't always down 3
games to one in the series. In game 1 there were
4,500 people at the E Center. They won that game.
Game 2 was on a Friday night. 8,000 people (lame for a
playoff game). When the Grizz came back to the E
Center for game 5, you would think the fact that they
were facing elimination would have made more people
want to come to the game. After all it could have been
(and actually was) the last game of the season.
I have seen the E Center packed a little tighter even
on a weeknight during the regular season. I have seen
it packed to the rafters even when the Lakers are in
town. This is a hockey town believe it or not.
I think the playoffs could have been marketed much
better by the front office. The Grizz had a 10 day
break before they began the playoffs. Don't you think
during that time something could have been done to
fill the E Center?
Personally, I was offended by the fact that Grizz
Season ticket reps were trying to sell Freezz Season
tickets to me. I know, I know, they are just doing
their jobs. But soccer is not hockey.

From www.nhl.com. I'm not a fan of either of these teams but this
must've been an exhausting game.
Philadelphia 2,
Pittsburgh 1 (OT)
PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Keith Primeau ended the third-longest game in
NHL history 12:01 into the fifth overtime and sent the Philadelphia
Flyers home on an ultimate high with a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh
Penguins. Primeau evened the Eastern Conference semifinal series at two
wins apiece, snapping a shot from the right faceoff dot over the
shoulder of goaltender Ron Tugnutt.
"I'm surprised it was the third-longest game," Primeau said. "It felt
like an eternity." It was just the first goal of the series and second
in the postseason for Primeau, who has only eight goals in 79 career
playoff games. He scored seven in 23 games this season after being
acquired from Carolina.
"We were just looking to stay patient, get a score," Primeau said.
"Unfortunately, it took three hours." The goal snapped an 87-minute,
14-second scoring drought in a game that began at 7:40 p.m. EDT and
ended more than seven hours later with several fans asleep in their
seats.
"I couldn't go for more than 25 seconds," Primeau said. "For that
length of time, I felt great." At 152:01, the game ranks third to a pair
of six-overtime playoff contests in the 1930s.
"It's the most exciting event I've ever been involved with in hockey,"
said Flyers defenseman Chris Therien. The game was 12:46 longer than
Pittsburgh's 3-2 victory over Washington in the 1996 conference
quarterfinals, the fourth-longest NHL game.
"If anything, it's a great feeling to win it," Flyers right wing Keith
Jones said. "I lost in Washington against Pittsburgh in four overtimes.
That loss demoralized us. It will be interesting to see what happens."
Rookie Brian Boucher stopped 57 shots for the Flyers, who began the day
with news that star center Eric Lindros suffered another head injury in
a scrimmage.
Philadelphia returns home for Game Five in the best-of-seven series on
Sunday. The home team has lost each game. "The sun's going to shine
tomorrow," Penguins right wing Matthew Barnaby said. "You see your
family, you want to get over it, get ready for Sunday."
Tugnutt finished with the second 70-save game of his career for the
Penguins, who failed to score over the final 149:39 after Alexei
Kovalev's goal early in the first period. "This was incredible," said
Tugnutt, who stopped 70 shots in a regular-season game nine years ago.
"Between periods you just try to get a drink, you just started to feel
yourself seizing up. People were starting to ask what period it was."
John LeClair tied it 4:47 into the third with a controversial goal that
appeared to ricochet off his helmet and past Tugnutt from the slot. Just
four seconds into a power play, LeClair battled defenseman Bob Boughner
in the slot and ducked as Eric Desjardins' slap shot from the right side
approached.
The Penguins argued that LeClair touched the puck with a high stick,
but after a video review, the goal counted. It was the only goal in nine
power-play opportunities for the game, which included three man
advantages in the third overtime.
Just 25 seconds into the 30th three-overtime game in NHL playoff
history, Daymond Langkow clipped Kovalev with a high stick but the
Penguins were unable to pressure Boucher on the power play. Midway
through the period, the Flyers inexplicably were called for too many men
on the ice. On the power play, Penguins superstar Jaromir Jagr one-timed
a shot from the right side that hit the side of the net, narrowly
missing the near goalpost.
Philadelphia gained its lone overtime power play three minutes later
when defenseman Darius Kasparaitis was called for holding Primeau. But
the Flyers were unable to beat Tugnutt. By the time the fourth overtime
started, the game was the 10th longest in NHL history and only nachos
and coffee were available to fans at refreshment stands.
"We were exhausted," Ramsay said. "I mean, our players were exhausted,
their players were exhausted. It was really an incredible effort by both
teams." Tugnutt already had played the most minutes and had the most
saves in a game by a Penguins goaltender. He stayed sharp throughout the
period, stopping a surprisingly energetic Mark Recchi at the left post
off a snap shot from the left circle.
The game became the third-longest in NHL history in the final minute of
the fourth overtime. Detroit needed 176:30 to defeat Montreal on March,
24 1936 and Toronto needed 164:46 to beat Boston on April 3, 1933. "Into
the last period, whatever it was, I didn't say a single thing," Flyers
interim coach Craig Ramsay said. "I just pointed to them when they came
on the ice who would start. I was almost as exhausted as them."
Pittsburgh carried play in the opening four minutes of the final
overtime period. In just his ninth career playoff game, Boucher was up
to the task. Jagr, held pointless for the second straight game, had his
spinning backhander in the low slot stopped by the rookie goalie 9:17
into the fifth overtime.
Jones gave the Penguins a scare at 11:20 when he sent a one-timer just
wide from the left hashmark, but Primeau ended the game with a move
reserved for a rested player in regulation. The 6-5, 220-pound center
took a feed from defenseman Dan McGillis, deked Kasparaitis in the right
circle and snapped a hard wrist shot by Tugnutt.
"Primeau made a good move, made a good shot," Tugnutt said.

Subject: [UG] Fans
For those of you who this doesn't apply to, please excuse the harsh tone, but it
hasn't been a great week. But for the vocal minority who this refers to.....
Many of you so-called fans seem to have absolutely no life and as such are so
concerned with the "lack of fan support" during the playoffs. I won't even
attempt to explain advertising budgets and buys, the effectiveness of such
things, or anything else that would go right through your pea-sized brains, but
please keep a couple of things in mind:
1) This is not a Grizzlies-only problem-it is a NBA (see Miami, Seattle), NHL
(most teams), and other IHL team problem. Cleveland is only averaging 3,300 for
it's playoff games. The reason is simple. When the playoffs begin, you lose a
good portion of your ticket base which comes from corporate tickets. Many
companies do not buy ticket packages for the postseason due to budget
considerations and issues. You are basically starting from the ground floor with
zero as your ticket base.
2) Our ticket sales staff works their asses off. They spent many long days and
nights in the weeks prior to the playoffs attempting to sell the games.
3) Comp tickets are at a minimum during the playoffs since the players
association receives a large portion of the gate. Since that is the case,
charities and others who may receive free tickets during the season don't get
that in the postseason.
Finally, if you people who know so much about selling tickets and marketing a
hockey team want to show us how it is done, then send a resume to the office.
With the expertise you seem to possess, we will be selling out every game the
second you are hired.
Otherwise, don't worry about a business you patronize but don't work for.
Thank you and goodbye.

A huge round of applause goes out to Ian from Mike England!! Well said!
Besides the few good comments on congratulating the team on a good season, I
would have to agree that way too many words are wasted on this list about
things that just don't matter!!
Thanks go out again to each and every team member that gave his heart, body
and soul to the sport that we all love and appreciate watching!
Thanks also go out to Bob (who took us from second to last place in our
conference to second place in one short season), Dean (who found Darcy
Werenka), Greg (who helped heal all the player's wounds), Larry (who washed
all of their jock straps...and them some)!!
Thanks also go out to each and every office staff member all the way from
Grizzbee, to Marilyn, to Tim, and to all the Sarahs in the office!! It
wouldn't hurt any of us to let the office staff know how much we appreciate
what they do to make our hockey experience such a great one!! Don't forget a
smile and a handshake can go a long ways!!
Thanks also go out to the Operations and building maintenance people!!
Craig, Jim and their crew do a fantastic job keeping the building clean, the
ice frozen, and everything running smooth!!
The Wasatch Grille is also a fantastic dining experience....quality food,
nice people, and a value to boot!!
This whole thing would not be possible without each and every person involved
from the ticket office, Centennial Management, Security, Retail, Food Service
(aka Diamond Concession), Parking, Grounds, Dave and Donna.....and yes,
us......the Fans!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks go out to each one of us!!!! We Rule!!!
I'm sure I missed someone....Sorry!
Don't get me wrong...I do have a few negative issues, but I'm not going to
lose sleep over them and neither should any of you!!
Hockey is a great sport and we should be glad as hell that we know it!! Next
year, do what I do....Bring a friend and don't be too proud to explain the
game to a total stranger!!
For those of you have not tried a Freezz game....you should at least give it
a try!! I bought 8 season tickets last year and I'm going to renew them
again this year!! Indoor soccer is way different from outdoor soccer. It is
pretty close to hockey on turf without sticks!! In my opinion, outdoor
soccer sucks to watch, but indoor soccer is super fast paced, higher scoring,
rough as hell and entertaining to the max!! Freezz...feel the chill!!
Ok....enough of my post! Whew!!
Thanks again Grizz and Ian!!
Game on!! Go Avs!!
Mike

Let's take a look at the contributions these two guys are making to =
Cleveland's playoff run.
Joe Frederick has 3 goals and 3 assists. He and two other players are =
tied for the lead for goals by Lumberjacks.
Ian Gordon has won 2 and lost 2. He has allowed 7 goals on 136 shots. For =
comparison reasons only, Rick Tabaracci has allowed 7 goals on 78 shots.
Unless the Lumberjacks win the Turner Cup, this is the last time I'll say =
anything about that awesome trade that was made to lose these two guys.

Thanks Ian for your comments, as they were needed here. A great team this
year and very exciting to watch. Only one team wins the cup, but many great
teams play hard all year to get the chance. Looking forward to next season,
and the possible new affiliation with Dallas.
The Freeze games are fun to attend, and do help get us through this Hockey
dry spell.

Well, Mike and John said it better than I could. I already did my thank yous
the other day.
Ian, truth be told, I think it would be cool to work in marketing for the
Grizzlies. Unfortunately, I'm sure it requires experiance and a degree
though, but it sounds fun.
