BY BRETT PRETTYMAN
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
Taj Melson may not be able to keep the playoff hopes of the Utah
Grizzlies afloat by himself, but one person is alive thanks to a quick
response from the hockey player.=20
When the team was boarding a connecting flight from Dallas to Salt =
Lake
City on Tuesday, Melson watched a man in front of the line stagger and
collapse into the arms of the ticket agent. Melson, who went through EMT
training while attending St. Cloud State, rushed to the man and was joined
by another aide.=20
"He appeared to be seizing, so we kept an airway open. We checked his
pulse and there wasn't one, so we started compressions," Melson said. =
While
the other man continued the chest compressions, Melson put a ventilator =
bag
on the victim.=20
Melson was eventually joined by Grizzlies trainer Greg Payette and =
Oscar
Johnson, one of the team doctors. Melson appeared to have everything in
control, so they just stood by in case he needed help.=20
Still not getting a response from the fallen man, Melson and his aide
used a defibrillator to shock the patient's heart. "We gave him a jolt and
it didn't work, so we shocked him twice. That sent him back into normal
heart rhythm," Melson said.=20
When paramedics arrived, the patient was coherent and holding his own.
After leaving his name and phone number, Melson boarded the flight and =
flew
home.=20
Melson served an internship at St. Cloud Hospital in Minnesota during
his college days.=20
He said a rotation in the emergency room prepared him for the event. =
"It
was never that instantaneous, though. Usually, when they make it to the =
ER,
the outcome has already been settled," he said.=20
Melson said he would like to return to the medicine field when his
playing days are over. "I feel like I did what I was trained to do. The =
Lord
just wasn't ready to take him. It was neat the way everybody worked so
quickly to help him," Melson said.=20

In all seriousness, way to go Taj! His quick thinking and cool head =
helped save a man's life. I am impressed.
