In case any of you read the Trib today and noticed the times listed for the
playoff games, they're wrong. The actual game time tomorrow and Friday night
is 7:05, as usual.
Can't wait! Go Grizz! Get that Cup!

BY BRETT PRETTYMAN
THE SALT LAKE
TRIBUNE
WEST VALLEY CITY -- On the 10th day, the Utah
Grizzlies and Houston Aeros finally will play hockey.=20
After an extended break since the end of the regular
season, the Grizzlies meet the Aeros tonight at the E
Center in Game 1 of the IHL's Western Conference
semifinals.=20
The teams played a tight season series and Utah
Coach Bob Bourne expects nothing to change for the
playoffs. "It will be a tight-checking, low-scoring
series," Bourne said. "They may check a little better
than we do, but we score more than they do."=20
Actually, Houston outscored Utah 24-23 and won the
season series 6-4, with two shootout victories.
However, the Grizzlies offense ranked second in the
IHL, averaging 3.23 goals. The Aeros gave up a
league-low 2.40 goals a game. "When it is five-on-five
hockey, we are the best team in the IHL," Bourne
claimed.=20
Neither team was effective on special teams in the
season series. The Aeros were 2-of-46 against Utah on
the power play in 10 games; the Grizzlies were
4-of-37.=20
Bourne was not pleased with his team's 14.5-percent
overall success on the power play. So he has moved
leading scorer Jarrod Skalde to the point and will put
Dave Archibald in the center position.=20
"We have worked hard on the power play and talked
about different scenarios," Bourne said. "During the
regular season, the players were not always as focused
as they should be on the power play. Sometimes, they
think it is their right to be on the power play. To me, it
is a privilege. We will get more scoring opportunities
in the playoffs."=20
But Bourne has not complained about Utah's
league-leading 14 short-handed goals. Four came
against the Aeros. That means theGrizzlies scored more
short-handed goals than Houston scored on power
plays.=20
Bourne announced a "gut decision" of Rick
Tabaracci as his goalie in Game 1. "It has been five
years since I was in the playoffs," Tabaracci said. "I'm
looking forward to it."=20
Tabaracci joined Utah from Cleveland at the trade
deadline in March, but said he had his eye on the
Grizzlies long before that. "I asked specifically to go to
Utah. Of all the teams I played against, the Grizzlies
were the best balanced," he said. "Utah was a tough
team to play against, and when a team gives you trouble
that you can't figure out, that is a good sign.=20
"I guess it was leadership, talent and desire to win
that made them attractive to me," he said. "I watched
them play and said to myself, 'It would be great to play
with those guys.' "=20
As if there wasn't enough pressure on Tabaracci to
perform, consider this: Three of four Grizzlies goalies
who started in the first game of the playoffs posted
shutouts (Jamie McLennan in 1995, Tommy Salo in
1996 and Don Beaupre in 1997).=20
A shutout is far down among Utah's goals against
Houston, but it is possible. The Grizzlies blanked the
Aeros 2-0 on April 5. "We just need to play basic
hockey," Bourne said. "We are the best when we are
not thinking a lot. They slow the game down. If we can
avoid that and play our freewheeling game, we should
win."IHL=20

Aeros rally late but fall to Grizzlies=20
By SCOTT KAISER=20

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- Too little, too late.=20
Just ask the Aeros, who watched the Utah Grizzlies jump out to a 2-0 =
lead and then hold off a furious third-period rally en route to a 2-1 =
victory in Game 1 of the International Hockey League Western Conference =
semifinals Tuesday night before 5,257 at the "E" Center.=20
The defending Turner Cup champions gave up goals early in each of the =
first two periods and could not make up the deficit, so they trail 1-0 =
in this best-of-seven series entering Game 2 here Friday night.=20
"We just talked (after the game) about how we have to play more (on =
Friday) like we did in the third period," Aeros forward Bobby Reynolds =
said. "We have to get on them and forecheck and finish our checks like =
we did in the third period.=20
"It's a seven-game series, and we have to take what we did in the third =
period and build on that. There's no sense looking back now."=20
As was the case during the regular season, special teams proved to be a =
thorn in the Aeros' side. After going 2-for-46 on the power play and =
allowing four short-handed goals to the Grizzlies in 10 meetings, the =
Aeros -- after a great-looking first power play -- went 0-for-5 with the =
man advantage and again allowed a short-handed goal.=20
"There was no excuse for that," Aeros coach Ron Low said of the goal =
that was the game-winner. "We had two bad reads, and that just can't =
happen."=20
The Aeros outshot the Grizzlies 12-2 in the third period but, after =
Marty Wilford scored through a screen at 9:32, couldn't send the game =
into overtime.=20
"We had some scrambles around the net but couldn't get our sticks on the =
puck," Low said.=20
Wilford's goal capped a streak in which the Aeros outshot the Grizzlies =
10-0 in the opening 10 minutes of the third period. On the scoring play, =
Lane Lambert tried to feed Filip Kuba, but the puck went between Kuba's =
legs right to Wilford at the blue line.=20
"I don't know who was in front," Wilford said. "The puck just wound up =
on my stick, and I put it on net."=20
When the Aeros did create scoring chances, Grizzlies goalie Rick =
Tabaracci turned them away 25 of 26 times. He saved his best for when =
the Aeros were short-handed, stopping four golden opportunities.=20
"He was solid," Reynolds said. "He came up big when he needed to, but we =
showed on the one goal that if we get some traffic in front of them, we =
can score."=20
The Aeros dug themselves an early hole by allowing a goal just 1:48 into =
the game. Jarrod Skalde led the rush into the Aeros' zone and fed Brad =
Lauer streaking down the left side.=20
Aeros goalie Frederic Chabot made a stick save on Lauer's slap shot, but =
the rebound bounced out in front of the goal and Richard Park was there =
to knock it home.=20
"It was a clear-cut three-on-three, and we didn't pick up the guy =
driving to the net," Low said. "We lost Park partly because of his =
speed."=20
The Aeros had a chance to tie it on their first power play, but David =
Wilkie hit the post, then Tabaracci robbed Mark Freer and Terry Marchant =
at the doorstep on a pair of short-handed opportunities.=20
Tabaracci continued his brilliance early in the second period as he =
stoned David Oliver at point-blank range. Moments later, on an Aeros =
power play, Pat Neaton poke-checked the puck up the boards and John =
Purves scooped it up along the left side and streaked into the Aeros' =
zone.=20
After eluding Kuba and deking Chabot to the ice, Purves tucked the puck =
into the open goal to make it 2-0 at 3:06.=20
"They had a better jump at the start of the game, but they still didn't =
have a whole lot of scoring chances," Low said. "The problem is we =
didn't generate much and then gave up that short-handed goal.=20
"In the end result, that cost us the hockey game."=20

Grizz All Business in Opening Win
BY BRETT PRETTYMAN
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
WEST VALLEY CITY -- After winning their first playoff game in two years, the
Utah Grizzlies should have been wildly celebrating a 2-1 victory over the
Houston Aeros.
Instead, no smiles were seen in the Utah locker room after the Grizzlies
took a 1-0 lead Tuesday in the IHL's best-of-seven Western Conference
semifinal series.
That is exactly the attitude the Grizzlies need if they truly intend to win
the Turner Cup. Game 2 is Friday.
Tuesday's low-scoring, tight-checking and physical game at the E Center was
everything the coaches had predicted. John Purves made them look like
prophets when he scored a short-handed goal three minutes into the second
period. Utah led the league in short-handed goals with 14 during the regular
season. Four of those came against the Aeros. If something works, why change
it?
With Jarrod Skalde in the penalty box for interference, Pat Neaton collected
the puck and sent a cross-ice pass to Purves. The puck was a little ahead of
him and heading for the corner.
In that moment of decision of whether to chase the puck and commit himself
or let the Aeros go after it, Purves lowered his head and churned his legs.
Instead of going into the corner, as Houston's Filip Kuba expected, Purves
broke to the net. "My intent was to get back to my forehand," Purves said.
Aeros goalie Frederic Chabot realized what Purves was doing and took a
chance by diving at him. "He is a challenging goalie. He likes to be the
aggressor."
Purves waited just long enough to get Chabot down and then calmly pushed the
puck into the net. Game over.
"That cost us the game," Houston Coach Ron Low said.
The defending champions were not done, though. After managing just six shots
in the second period, even with three power plays, Houston outshot Utah 12-2
in the last 20 minutes. "I would have been disappointed in Houston if they
didn't turn it on," Utah Coach Bob Bourne said. "We were turning the puck
over a lot and they were putting on the pressure."
Houston ruined Utah's bid for a shutout when Marty Wilford fired a long
slapshot through a screen in the middle of the third period. "It may have
appeared like we let down. It certainly wasn't intentional," Purves said of
the last period. "We were not happy with the way we finished the game. We
got into a defense-first style."
Grizzlies goalie Rick Tabaracci made 25 saves and made the dominating Chabot
look human. Chabot finished with 17 saves. Tabaracci said it was important
for the Grizzlies to hold onto the lead. "We want to get to the point where
it is automatic," he said. "That when we have a 2-1 lead it is a guaranteed
win."
Utah scored just 1:48 into the game when Richard Park tickled a Skalde
rebound across the blue line as Houstondefenseman Scott Swanson desperately
tried to clear the puck.
A single trout hit the ice after the goal. Not many of the Grizzlies players
on this team remember the way fans saluted goals with the fish during in the
1995-96 season when Utah won the Turner Cup.
PLAYOFF NOTES: Houston players David Wilkie and Brad Williamson attended the
Jazz's game Monday Wilkie was so impressed with the play of John Stockton he
dubbed the Jazz player "Wayne Gretzky of the NBA". Before leaving the game,
Wilkie purchased a Stockton jersey for his son. . . . Chicago Wolves General
Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff scouted the game. The winner of the Utah/Houston
series faces the winner of the Chicago/Long Beach series. That matchup
starts today at Chicago. . . . A 10-day break did little to help the
Grizzlies fill the building. Tuesday's crowd (5,257) was the smallest to
watch a playoff game at the E Center since it opened three years ago. The
lowest attendance at a Grizzlies playoff game in Utah was 4,163 in 1997
against Long Beach.

I noticed at the hockey game only a couple of people threw fish out on the
ice. I know we use to do this several years ago but the league passed a no
no rule against it. Does this still apply for this year's playoffs or has
the league banned it again ?
Personally, I would love to resume the fish throwing every time we score a
goal. Can someone form the Grizz orginization please clarify if we are
indeed allowed to throw fish.

I don't get it Ted. What good would just the heads do? We're supposed to be
feeding the bears, there's no meat on fish heads.

I would be just as happy to not have fish. It was fun back in '96, but it =
seems dated and out of place to me now.
I also hated the disruption to the flow of the game that the ensuing =
clean-up always caused.
Does anyone know what the giveaway for the first 3000 fans is on Friday? =
I'm trying to decide how earliy I need to show up...
Also - Chicago, Cleveland and Cincy all won last night, and take 1-0 =
leads in their respective series.
