  75. April 19 occupies a hallowed place in American history. The date is second
  76. only to July 4 in its significance. April 19, of course, is the date that
  77. America's fight for independence began.
  78.  
  79. The events of that glorious day actually began on April 14. On this day
  80. Massachusetts Governor Gage was secretly ordered to enforce the Coercive
  81. Acts and suppress the rebellion that was brewing among the colonists using
  82. all force necessary.
  83.  
  84. On April 18, General Gage ordered 700 British troops to Concord to
  85. confiscate or destroy the colonists' firearms. (Yes, friends, it was the
  86. attempted confiscation of guns that triggered the shot heard round the
  87. world.) That night, Paul Revere and William Dawes left Boston to warn
  88. the colonists. Two of the revolution leaders, Sam Adams and John Hancock,
  89. were both hiding in  Lexington.
  90.  
  91. At dawn on April 19 about 70 Massachusetts militiamen faced off against
  92. the British on Lexington Green. Who fired that opening shot is not known,
  93. but a subsequent volley of British rifle fire and bayonet charge left 8
  94. Americans dead and 10 wounded. At the North Bridge in Concord, British
  95. troops were attacked by militiamen, which resulted in 14 British casualties.
  96. After regrouping, the soldiers continued their march into Concord and
  97. destroyed the weapons depot there.
  98.  
  99. News of the raid spread like wildfire through the colonies, and as the
  100. British marched back to Boston they found themselves under constant attack
  101. by American militiamen. By the time the British arrived back at Boston they
  102. had suffered more than 250 casualties. The War for America's Independence
  103. had begun.
  104.  
  105. Yet, the significance of April 19 date is largely lost to most Americans
  106. today. Newscasts are saturated with reminders of the Oklahoma City bombing,
  107. but little else. Tragically, to most Americans today, Paul Revere and Sam
  108. Adams are irrelevant (if not despised) relics of a forgotten past. Even
  109. more tragically, the principles for which Revere and Adams fought are also
  110. considered irrelevant by the current generation.
  111.  
  112. For every one dollar that London absconded back in 1775, Washington, D.C.
  113. steals one thousand (and more) today. For every violation of rights
  114. enumerated in our Declaration of Independence, there are hundreds of federal
  115. usurpations of rights today. In fact, the oppressive regulations and edicts
  116. ordered by the federal government today make old King George look saintly
  117. by contrast. (And we call him a tyrant, while we claim to be free men.)
  118.  
  119. It's a bridge mostly forgotten that Emerson wrote about. That "rude bridge
  120. that arched the flood" has been replaced with a gold encrusted super highway
  121. that is transporting our country smack into the middle of a socialistic New
  122. World Order.
  123.  
  124. It's not that we don't have the likes of Paul Revere and Sam Adams today;
  125. it's just that few people are paying them any heed. American turncoats are
  126. accomplishing what British Redcoats could not accomplish.
  127.  
  128. Americans today need to take a long look at that old bridge. And they had
  129. better do it soon, because the water is quickly rising, and it is doubtful
  130. that the old bridge can arch the flood much longer.

  177. programmer for hard drive problems, and Sarah Brady for firearms expertise.

  179. 12. The 2nd Amendment, ratified in 1787, refers to the National Guard, which
  180. was created 130 years later, in 1917.

  182. 13. The National Guard, which is federally funded, with bases on federal
  183. land, using federally-owned weapons, vehicles, buildings, and uniforms,
  184. punishing trespassers under federal law, is a "state" militia.

  382. (Wednesday, May 2, 2001) -- What do education and gun shows have
  383. in common?  Nothing really, but Senators could soon be voting to
  384. seriously restrict your Second Amendment rights as debate over
  385. the education bill, S. 1, is now shifting into high gear.
  386.  
  387. Democratic Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island has introduced
  388. legislation to severely restrict your ability to sell and buy
  389. firearms at gun shows, and he could offer this bill as an amendment
  390. to the education bill.  Sen. Reed's bill, S. 767, would not only ban
  391. the private sales of firearms at gun shows -- if the buyer refuses
  392. to be registered through a background check -- it could conceivably
  393. drive gun shows out of business altogether.
  394.  
  395. Considering that last year's Republican-controlled Senate voted
  396. repeatedly in favor of gun control, there is no guarantee that the
  397. Reed bill would lose right now -- especially since the Senate is
  398. evenly split between Republicans and Democrats.
  399.  
  400. Anti-gun McCain "compromise" in the works.  Further complicating
  401. matters is the fact that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has teamed up with
  402. Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT), Al Gore's vice-presidential running mate,
  403. to put together a gun control "compromise" that could be one of the
  404. most dangerous anti-gun bills introduced in the 107th Congress.
  405.  
  406. The McCain-Lieberman compromise also restricts your ability to buy
  407. and sell firearms, and because it is "bipartisan," it could actually
  408. get more votes than the Reed provision.  Gun owners should contact
  409. their Senators because McCain might very well try to add this
  410. legislation to the education bill.
  411.  
  412. While McCain has still not officially introduced his bill, there
  413. have been enough written and published statements from his office to
  414. determine what the particulars are.  Gun owners should be concerned
  415. about this legislation because it would, in a nutshell:
  416.  
  417.  * Ban private sales at gun shows unless the buyer submits to a
  418.    registration background check;
  419.  
  420.  * Discourage most gun shows from even occurring, as the liability
  421.    for promoters would be immense -- they could land in jail for
  422.    very technical violations of procedure; and finally,
  423.  
  424.  * Encourage authorities to arrest and convict honest gun owners who
  425.    may inadvertently violate one of the many federal anti-gun laws,
  426.    several of which carry severe penalties for mere technicalities.
  427.  
  428. For example, a law-abiding citizen who innocently drives by a school
  429. with a gun in his car could find himself being sent to prison as a
  430. result of McCain's increased funding for more agents to crack down
  431. on "gun crimes."
  432.  
  433. Or a parent who uses the family handgun to go target shooting with
  434. his 15-year old son (when the son does not have written permission
  435. to handle the firearm in his possession) could find himself facing
  436. severe criminal charges.
  437.  
  438. Or even worse, an individual who uses a gun for self-defense in a
  439. way that a court subsequently finds to be inappropriate could be
  440. sent to prison for a MANDATORY MINIMUM of five years.
  441.  
  442.  
  443. ACTION: These examples are just the tip of the iceberg.  And that
  444. is why your help is needed today.  Taking on someone who is widely
  445. regarded as an American hero, especially by the media, is no easy
  446. task.  But hero or not, if a U.S. Senator is responsible for
  447. legislation that would deliver a crushing blow to our rights as
  448. gun owners, we cannot sit still!
  449.  
  450. Every member of the U.S. Senate needs to hear from gun owners to let
  451. them know that we strongly oppose any so-called "compromise" gun
  452. legislation offered by Sen. McCain, and we want them to vigorously
  453. oppose this provision -- or any other anti-gun proposal.
  454.  
  455. Please contact your Senators at once so we can stop this anti-gun
  456. McCain legislation!
  457.

  484. It is outrageous that Senators in Washington, D.C., would even
  485. consider banning a constitutionally protected activity that
  486. law-abiding, consenting adults are peacefully engaging in.

  488. Both of these gun proposals could also drive gun shows out of
  489. business, as the liability for promoters would be immense -- they
  490. could land in jail for very technical violations of procedure.

  492. Senator Reed's proposal would track the provisions in his bill,
  493. S. 767.  McCain's language has yet to be introduced.  Nevertheless,
  494. I hope you will oppose either proposal, or any other anti-gun
  495. provision that is offered to the education bill.  Please let me know

  598. states received on Tuesday), the anti-gunners are about to launch another
  599. attack on our Right to Keep and Bear Arms! As the U.S. Senate continues
  600. debate on education legislation, enemies of the Second Amendment are
  601. planning to hijack the education bill by offering anti-gun amendments --to
  602. register guns, license gun owners, effectively ban gun shows, and/or mandate
  603. the use of gun locks -- in another shameless attempt to exploit the recent
  604. anniversary of the tragedy at Columbine. Right now, the biggest threat to
  605. our rights is still S. 767, by anti-gun Senator Jack Reed (D-R.I.) S. 767 is
  606. Reed's version of the Lautenberg legislation that sought to end gun shows
  607. as we know them today. The original Lautenberg bill passed the Senate a few
  608. weeks after the Columbine attack by a vote of 51-50 -- with then-Vice
  609. President Al Gore casting the tie-breaking vote. We also expect that U.S.
  610. Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) will soon
  611. introduce their "compromise" gun show legislation. While this bill has not
  612. yet been introduced, we expect it will be an unworkable "middle ground"
  613. bill that will still provide for a waiting period on gun purchases of as
  614. long as five days, and will still allow the retention of records on gun
  615. purchases by law-abiding citizens. Your U.S. Senators still need to hear
  616. from you TODAY -- even if you have already contacted them on this issue --
  617. in opposition to both S. 767 and the McCain-Lieberman gun show bill. Please
  618. continue to call, e-mail, and write your U.S. Senators today to urge them to
  619. oppose gun control amendments to the education bill! And be sure to spread
  620. the word and encourage your family, friends, and fellow firearm owners to do
  621. the same. Tell your Senators that registration and waiting periods that are
  622. longer than gun shows are unacceptable! You can find contact information for

  738. When Kim Mariani was asked about a Walmart shopper who used her handgun to
  739. stop a knife-wielding assailant, the spokeswoman for Handgun Control, Inc.
  740. said, "[Using a gun] just escalates the situation, and a lot of times it's
  741. unnecessary."

  743. The case she was referring to occurred on May 23, 2000, in Spring Hill,
  744. Florida. A shoplifter attacked employees with a knife, slashing two of
  745. them before Sandra Suter pulled her licensed .40-caliber handgun and ended
  746. the assault.
  747.  
  748. It turned out that Willie J. Redding, the assailant, had been released
  749. from jail the same day. He was a violent career criminal and drug addict
  750. who knew how to work the criminal justice system to his advantage. He'd
  751. been arrested for dozens of crimes, but had spent little time in jail.
  752.  
  753. Many cops and Walmart employees called Suter a heroine, stating that she
  754. saved others from being injured in the knife attack.
  755.  
  756. HCI, of course, disagreed. Their statements implied that Suter should not
  757. have become involved. The grandmother should have allowed Redding to
  758. continue his attack on the unarmed employees.
  759.  
  760. What would have happened had Suter not intervened?
  761.  
  762. We get an idea from an incident that occurred a year later.
  763.  
  764. On Sunday, May 13, 2001, a similar attack occurred, this one in Lexington,
  765. Kentucky. Unfortunately, in this case, none of the employees or customers
  766. were armed, leading the assailant to escalate his attack until as many as
  767. eight people were injured.
  768.  
  769. At midnight, Jorge Soto Luke, a drug addict with a history of mental
  770. illness, walked out of the Lexington Walmart. When he did, a buzzer went
  771. off, indicating that he was carrying goods he hadn't paid for. Aswana
  772. Waddy, a cashier, yelled for Luke to stop. Even though he kept going, Luke
  773. was not followed by other employees.
  774.  
  775. But fifteen minutes later, he returned.
  776.  
  777. He walked into the store, and rushed straight toward Waddy. Luke punched
  778. the cashier, knocking her to the floor. Then he pulled out a knife and
  779. began stabbing her. Waddy was stabbed in the shoulder, back, and head.
  780. After the assault, she was taken to Kentucky Medical Center where she was
  781. listed in fair condition.
  782.  
  783. When two customers attempted to intervene in the attack on Waddy, they
  784. were also stabbed. Store employees Katie Fennel and Deborah Porter rushed
  785. to the aid of their fellow-employee but they were met by the enraged Luke
  786. and repeatedly stabbed.
  787.  
  788. As three employees lay on the floor bleeding from wounds inflicted by
  789. Luke, still another employee, a female, attempted to pull Waddy away from
  790. the attacker. Luke was having none of it--he stabbed the employee in the
  791. shoulder and slashed her face.
  792.  
  793. After a rampage that lasted nearly ten minutes, Luke was finally subdued
  794. by several male employees.
  795.  
  796. Police soon arrived. Investigators stated that they were looking for at
  797. least two other customers who fled the store after being attacked by Luke.
  798.  
  799. In all, as many as eight customers and employees had been knifed by the
  800. crazed assailant. The victims were taken to area hospitals. All except
  801. Waddy were released within 24 hours. Her injuries were severe enough to
  802. require surgery and an extensive stay in the hospital.
  803.  
  804. The police investigation revealed that Luke was a crack addict with a
  805. history of mental illness.
  806.  
  807. Had a Sandra Suter been in the store, the assault might have ended
  808. quickly. It might not have escalated to the point that eight people were
  809. injured.
  810.  
  811. The contrast is unmistakeable. Without a firearm, the attack in Lexington
  812. seemed to go on forever. Each heroic employee or customer who attempted to
  813. stop the assailant was stabbed, leaving the floor littered with bleeding
  814. victims.
  815.  
  816. On the other hand, the Spring Hill assailant looked down the barrel of a
  817. handgun and quickly lost his aggressive tendencies. In retrospect, Sandra
  818. Suter almost certainly saved others from injury or even death.
  819.  
  820. According to a recent report, in the wake of the Lexington attack, Walmart
  821. is reviewing its security policies. Letting employees carry concealed
  822. weapons might be a start.

  851. Lacking a VERY rapid, full explanation affirming their support for gun
  852. businesses (big, small, independant, etc, not just the KMart's and
  853. Walmarts who do a small fraction of their business in gun stuff, but full
  854. out gun stores) I think the advice in the second forward is well worth
  855. heading.  We've got some great local financial institutions that, in my
  856. experience, give far better customer service, lower fees, and pay higher
  857. interest, than do the big national chains anyway.  Just my $.02 worth...

  996. margin greater than that taken by the Libertarian candidate, it's as
  997. though there wasn't a Libertarian candidate -- the Democrat got more
  998. votes than both combined.
