  2. Subject: Volunteers need for a couple hours this Saturday at State GOP Convention

  5. You do not need to be a delegate or even a Republican to assist with this
  6. effort.  GOP State Delegates may also help, but will find it easier to do
  7. so if they are not involved in any multi-county elections first thing in
  8. the morning.
  9.  
  10. The Utah Gun Owners' Alliance, headed up by Dr. Sarah Thompson, is
  11. preparing flyers to pass out to delegates at the GOP State Convention
  12. this Saturday.  These flyers will acquaint delegates with the true,
  13. anti-self-defense voting record of a couple of the better known
  14. incumbents facing contested races.  In conjunction with some conservative
  15. delegates, they will also be passing out a "Delegate Guide" to help
  16. prevent and correct the types of procedural abuses used by some party
  17. insiders to deny pro-liberty/pro-self-defense candidates a fair chance in
  18. convention.  This guide will be similar to the one passed out at the
  19. State Convention last year, and similar, though larger than the one
  20. passed out last weekend at the SLCounty Convention.
  21.  
  22. We are in need of people willing to pass out these pieces of literature
  23. as Delegates enter the Convention.  Because of the large numbers of
  24. entrances to the "E" center, we need lots of people to help pass out
  25. info.  For those who have never been to a convention, there are numerous
  26. groups and individuals passing out information to the delegates and most
  27. delegates arrive fully expecting and very open to taking whatever info is
  28. presented.  Many will automatically take a copy of whatever flyers are
  29. being offered.  This is an incredibly easy, low-key way to help send a
  30. strong message of disapproval to anti-gun politicians and a strong
  31. message of support to current and future pro-gun challengers.  In most
  32. cases the hardest part of doing this is simply getting the flyers from
  33. your holding hand, into your passing out hand, one-at-a-time, fast enough
  34. for every delegate who is willing to take one to actually get it without
  35. having to stop and wait.
  36.  
  37. I do not have exact schedule yet, but anticipate that volunteers will
  38. need to be at the E Center in West Valley by about 6:30 am.  I fully
  39. expect that by 9:30, most delegates will have received the information
  40. and/or we will be out of copies to pass out.
  41.  
  42. This is the final chance to force these anti-gun incumbents into
  43. embarrassing primaries or to even oust them altogether by getting 60% of
  44. the delegates to vote for the challengers and thus give the nomination to
  45. the challenger without a primary.

  126. Janalee Tobias of Women Against Gun Control taped a session of "Take2
  127. With Rod Decker" tonight after the GOP State Convention.  It is scheduled
  128. to air tomorrow (Sunday) morning at 10:30 am.  Sorry for the late notice
  129. but I just found out.
  130.  
  131. The anti-gun woman she debated on the show apparantly made a number of
  132. blatantly false statements which Janalee challanged and which Decker said
  133. he'd check up on.  It may be worthwile for those who see the show to take
  134. a moment to call the Take2 number (I trust it will air on the show) and
  135. encourage Decker to follow through with getting--AND THEN REPORTING--the
  136. real facts of the matters discussed.
  137.  
  138. For any who may be interested, today's Utah State GOP convention was full
  139. of interesting twists, turns, and results.  If no one beats me to it,
  140. I'll try to get out a more complete report in a couple days when I'm
  141. better rested.  Here are some hightlights,
  142.  
  143. 1CD Hansen was unchallanged.
  144. 2CD Cook and Derek Smith face off in a primary.  Jeff Wright was quickly
  145. eliminated on first ballot.
  146. 3CD Cannon easily avoided a primary in his race.
  147.  
  148. Senate Seat:  After a number of dirty tricks on the part of SL County in
  149. removing certain delegates and replacing them with others, and with Rob
  150. Bishop pushing for acceptance of a potentially tainted ballott which the
  151. convention delegates simply did not want to take time to re-vote on under
  152. more controlled conditions, Hatch avoided a primary with Greg Hawkins by
  153. about 55 votes out of some 3500 cast-- ~61.5% to 48.5%.  Look for the
  154. Juvinille (in)Justice Bill to come charging out of committee with all
  155. anti-gun provisions intact any day now.
  156.  
  157. State Attorney General:  Mylar and Shurtleff face a primary.
  158. State Treasurer and Auditor were uncontested and went to the incumbants.
  159.  
  160. Governor's race:  Apparantly being scared by poll numbers, Leavitt
  161. YESTERDAY signed an executive order authorizing State lawsuits against
  162. the feds over road and wilderness issues.  State GOP and Convention
  163. Chairman Rob Bishop twice refused to remove Leavitt's name from the
  164. ballot for being in direct, open and flagrant violation of GOP State
  165. Bylaw # 8 requiring all Statewide and Federal Candidates to file a
  166. written disclosure with the party 30 days prior to the convention
  167. declaring either their full support for the party platform or listing any
  168. areas of disagreement.  Best information is that as of yesterday, Leavitt
  169. had failed to file this disclosure.  The majority of delegates agreed
  170. with Rob on this one.  As at last year's State Convention, Leavitt was
  171. loudly and roundly booed and heckled during his appearances.  Glen Davis,
  172. who to the best of my knowledge did not have a formal presence at any
  173. county conventions and mailed out only a single 4 page platform, handily
  174. forced a primary once the other challangers were eliminated during
  175. multiple ballots.  Final results were roughly 53% Leavitt, 47% Davis.  In
  176. what may prove to be a stroke of genius on somebody's part, Davis
  177. selected Greg Hawkins to be his Lt. Gov running mate.  Leavitt and Bishop
  178. were clearly unhappy, though Leavitt did promise to engage in debates.  I
  179. will be quite happy if SLCo and State GOP officials end up rueing the day
  180. they engaged in the dirty trick to eliminate Hawkins from the Senate
  181. primary.
  182.  
  183. Thank you to those of you who participated and assisted and help make
  184. some of these victories possible.
  185.  
  186. As always with these things, it was a long day and the numbers dimished
  187. for the final round of votes.  If the info I received on vote totals
  188. during the day is at all accurate, it would appear that Conservative
  189. delegates left in nearly equal numbers as the NEA types.  I sincerely
  190. hope that in the future, conservatives will be dedicated not only to
  191. attending their caucas meetings with friends and getting elected
  192. delegates, but will also make whatever schedule adjustments are needed to
  193. stay at convention until final votes are cast and announced AND will be
  194. willing to support open and proper debate and demand that the rules be
  195. upheld throughout the day.  Far too many delegates allow every argument
  196. for "expediancy" from the chair  to cut off debate, adopt rules that
  197. limit our ability to be heard, or to refuse taking time for a fair and
  198. unbiased re-vote when needed.
  199.  
  200. We had some small successes today.  But we've got a long way to go and we
  201. need every pro-gun/conservative person we can find to help us.  Delegates
  202. have got to show up to meetings committed to taking the time to do things
  203. right even if it does mean being there "until Tuesday."  They have got to
  204. be willing to challange and overrule the chair when he is out of line. 
  205. Like minded non-delegates need to show up to assist with leafletting,
  206. manning booths, etc.  I believe some of the success we had today was due
  207. to the help of a few delegates and non-delegates alike who got "Delegate
  208. Guides" "UTGOA Candidate Ratings" "Hatch's Gun Record" and "Leavitt's Gun
  209. Record" flyers into the hands of the majority of delegates.  It was
  210. amazing the difference 15 or so organized people made at this convention
  211. vs 5 or 6 at previous conventions I've attended.  I see no reason why
  212. that number isn't closer to 150 organized people at next year's
  213. organizing convention.
  214.  
  215. Please, plan now to attend the ENTIRE organizing convention next year. 
  216. Honestly, I plan to spend from 6:00 am until past midnight at these
  217. conventions.  If we get out before that (and we do), I consider it "found
  218. time."  Start thinking of good, credible, conservatives to run for party
  219. office.  If you are thinking of running for some office, please make sure
  220. you have some credetials of service to the party or her candidates.  If
  221. you don't have any yet, get some by actively working on a campaign or by
  222. finding a volunteer position within the party.  Also. if you are on the
  223. county or State Central Committee, please make sure to attend all the
  224. meetings this next year.  There are clearly a number of areas that need
  225. some housecleaning and Conservatives will need your support and your
  226. vote.

  282. inquiry, she was told was being funded by "Chris Hill" on behalf of Jeff
  283. Wright to learn why Jeff showed so poorly.  Given the question that were
  284. asked, however, we believe the information is also going to
  285. Leavitt/Hatch/et al.  I won't attempt to suggest what the "correct" or
  286. "best" answers might be to the questions, but if you do happen to be
  287. contacted, I would suggest that this might be one time to consider
  288. parting with a little more info than you normally do so as to send a loud
  289. strong message that rank and file, moderate Republicans are unhappy about
  290. guns, taxes, land issues, and health care/insurance.  ... Or...maybe they
  291. already know that and it is still wise to keep ones cards close to the

  455.                   Did concealed weapons make a difference? I don't think
  456. so. Could you imagine if several people in Chevys had pulled out weapons
  457. and opened fire on the gunman? How many
  458.             more deaths would have occurred?
  459.                   Concealed weapons don't count for a hill of beans when
  460. reality kicks in. Random acts of violence will still occur, and concealed
  461. weapons will only compound the problem or

  498. We visited my in-laws for Mother's day yesterday. My father was born in
  499. Germany and knows history. He included in our discussions yesterday some
  500. interesting things about Hitler's beginnings. He began to require gun owners
  501. to lock their firearms in a bunker when they were not being used "for
  502. greater security from thieves". One day, the locks had been changed and no
  503. one had access to their own firearms. Shortly thereafter, Jews began to die.
  504. You know that story, and if you are wise, have considered the fact that it
  505. couldn't have happened if Hitler hadn't first disarmed his citizenry?

  507. You should know that the Million Moron March on Washington D.C. (sorry I've
  508. given away my bias) was organized by a woman who is a close friend and
  509. confidant of Hillary Clinton. Also, remember this quote from May, 1991:

  512. would resist us have been totally disarmed."

  517. self-defense. Yet in debates, employees of Gun Control, Inc. steadfastly
  518. deny that the organization believes in the policies articulated by its
  519. leaders. In short, they are lying about what they want to accomplish. This
  520. is understandable, to be sure; but not honorable, or right for the country.

  580. can't grasp the fact that disarming victims (aka gun control) has, does,
  581. and will kill far more people than it ever saves.  They can't even count

  996. the strawman arguments and sidestepping of the saliant points (like why
  997. should a person's right to effectively defend themselves be limited by
  998. geography, or what evidence is there to suggest Utah's 30,000 CCW
  999. permitees are not already compentan) would have been bad enough.  But the
  1000. closing paragraph, accusing self-defense supporters of waging a "campaign
  1001. of intimidation" is downright slanderous, IMO.

  1018. Salt Lake man this past weekend. A 20-something man, he smashed through a

  1021. lives there shot him dead. Although the case has not yet been reviewed by
  1022. prosecutors, police assert it rises to the
  1023.             level of justifiable homicide.
  1024.                   Given what we know at this point, it appears the
  1025. homeowner was within his rights to shoot at the intruder. He did so under
  1026. direct threat to him and his wife. We take no issue
  1027.             with the shooter's actions, nor with his right to bear arms.
  1028.                   Unfortunately, this is the kind of case gun-rights
  1029. advocates are likely to latch onto. No one should be surprised if they
  1030. single out this homeowner as a poster boy du jour in the
  1031.             lobbying campaign against the "Safe to Learn, Safe to
  1032. Worship" citizen initiative. But to do so would be wrong, because this
  1033. incident is completely unrelated to the aims of the
  1034.             citizen initiative.
  1035.                   Private gun ownership is not an issue here. The
  1036. petition does not concern itself with the debate over whether the Second
  1037. Amendment permits gun ownership or whether it
  1038.             refers only to arming a state militia. Nor do we. Instead,
  1039. our concern is twofold: that people who own guns acknowledge and accept
  1040. the responsibilities that come with that right
  1041.             and that the gun debate not degenerate into a
  1042. winner-takes-all dialogue. Common-sense answers can be found on middle
  1043. ground if both sides would only cease to view guns as a
  1044.             black-and-white issue.
  1045.                   Guns aren't going away. They have been a part of the
  1046. American landscape from the beginning. Americans need to become educated
  1047. about them and learn to live with and
  1048.             respect them.
  1049.                   Because guns, and private gun ownership, aren't going
  1050. away ù despite the National Rifle Association's incessant harping that
  1051. gun rights are under grave threat ù gun-rights
  1052.             advocates should not summarily dismiss every proposed rule or
  1053. law on principle. They should not make the quantum leap in logic that
  1054. says banning concealed weapons from
  1055.             schools and churches is a slippery slope to gun confiscation

  1059. would require concealed weapons permit-holders,
  1060.             who now number 30,000 in Utah, to demonstrate firearms

  1062.                   The citizen initiative gives Utahns an opportunity to
  1063. speak on the issue of concealed weapons, whether the Legislature went too
  1064. far in liberalizing the law in 1995.
  1065.                   Whether Utahns back the initiative or not, they should
  1066. sign petitions to put it to a vote of the people, and those opposed to
  1067. the initiative should stop their campaign of
  1068.             intimidation. With a May 30 deadline looming, Utahns need to

  1127. I'm sending this to a handful of people in the gun rights
  1128. movement whose opinions I respect, to obtain their judgment of
  1129. one of my ideas/opinions.

  1131. A couple years ago while reading the main body of the
  1132. constitution, it struck me that Article I, Section 10 prohibits
  1133. the states from "maintaining troops" without the express consent
  1134. of congress.  It seems to me that regarding the question of "the
  1135. meaning of the Second Amendment," that shoots holes in the now-
  1136. popular argument that the Second Amendment was intended to grant
  1137. states the blanket right to maintain National Guard-like
  1138. organized forces.
  1139.  
  1140. And yet, I don't recall the issue of Article I, Section 10 ever
  1141. being raised, and when I have raised it, even in the gun rights
  1142. community, I get the sense that no one finds it a very compelling
  1143. argument.  By contrast I, possibly as a habitual contrarion,
  1144. don't find the widely popular "quote the founders" (e.g., George
  1145. Mason, "Who are the militia?) arguments terribly compelling --
  1146. VALID, just not very compelling.
  1147.  
  1148. The only argument I thought of, and since encountered, against my
  1149. Article I, Section 10, argument, is that possibly the later
  1150. Second Amendment could be construed as overriding it.  Here I
  1151. think the "quotes of the Founders" definitely does come into
  1152. play, as I'm sure if there had been ONE example of the Bill of
  1153. Rights REVERSING a basic premise of the constitution, or the
  1154. consensus regarding its intent, the Anti-Federalists, who opposed
  1155. ratification, would have been all over it saying, "See?  Your
  1156. constitution isn't even ratified yet and ALREADY you're changing
  1157. it. . ."  I have found no evidence at all of such a debate, which
  1158. inclines me to believe that EVERYONE, including the Federalists
  1159. and Anti-Federalists, agreed that the intent of the constitution,
  1160. including, or especially, the constitution with the Bill of
  1161. Rights included, was to prohibit standing armies at any level of
  1162. government, without the consent of congress.
  1163.  
  1164. But my basic questions are,
  1165.  
  1166. o  Has this argument been done, and I'm just not aware of it?

  1168. o  If it has been done, has it been found wanting in the debate?

  1210. Rosie O'Donnell's Bodyguard Gets a Gun - How Nice!

  1215. They are evil. They hurt people. They kill people.

  1217. Remember how she treated Tom Selleck on her show for supporting the NRA. 
  1218.  
  1219. Rosie would like a gun-free world for America - or should we say for the
  1220. rest of America. 
  1221.  
  1222. For herself, she would like a gun. She would like one for her bodyguard.
  1223. Why? To keep her and her children safe. 
  1224.  
  1225. Some of Rosie's Greenwich, Conn., neighbors noted the irony recently when
  1226. her bodyguard applied for a gun permit. 
  1227.  
  1228. Greenwich Police Chief Peter Robbins told the Stamford Advocate that
  1229. indeed Rosie's bodyguard had applied for a concealed weapon permit. 
  1230.  
  1231. "The facts are [O'Donnell's] bodyguard has made an application for a
  1232. carry permit," Robbins told the paper. "It's under review and I haven't
  1233. yet granted a permit for this applicant." 
  1234.  
  1235. O'Donnell's spokeswoman, Jennifer Glaisek, explained the move to the
  1236. Stamford Advocate. She said that O'Donnell's children "need a bodyguard
  1237. because they have been the targets of threats, on which she refused to
  1238. elaborate." 
  1239.  
  1240. Rosie's request raised worries with the local school district after
  1241. rumors floated that the bodyguard would be armed when he brought one of
  1242. O'Donnell's sons to school. 
  1243.  
  1244. O'Donnell denies that will happen. 
  1245.  
  1246. She said she has no problem with her decision to get the gun. 
  1247.  
  1248. "I don't personally own a gun," Rosie told the Advocate, "but if you are
  1249. qualified, licensed and registered, I have no problem." 
  1250.  
  1251. Funny, Rosie, that's the same policy of the NRA. 
  1252.  
  1253. O'Donnell also may not be fitting in with her wealthy neighbors in
  1254. Greenwich. 
  1255.  
  1256. "People here have too much money," she complained to the paper. 
  1257.  
  1258. Get this, she also claims she wants her kids to attend public schools. 
  1259.  
  1260. "I come from a working-class background. That's always been the plan." 
  1261.  
  1262. We'll believe it when we see it. After all, if she wanted to live in a
  1263. blue collar neighborhood and have her kids attend public schools, she
  1264. would have moved to Hoboken, not Greenwich.

  1283. No 'heckling,' just nice chat 
  1284.  
  1285.                   I found it interesting to read the reports of the
  1286. so-called "heckling" being done by gun advocates recently over the
  1287. conceal-carry petition issue. The article stated that a
  1288.             volunteer in South Jordan was "repeatedly harassed until she
  1289. packed up and went home."
  1290.                   Somehow that statement didn't have the ring of truth to
  1291. it, since I was the individual being accused of committing the alleged
  1292. harassment. The harassing conversation we
  1293.             supposedly had consisted of me inquiring about the well-being
  1294. of her recently returned missionary, the warm weather and the beautiful
  1295. trees found in the valley. It was a very
  1296.             pleasant conversation, I might add!
  1297.                   Sure, we have differing political views, but we both
  1298. tried to exhibit courtesy to the other in spite of the fact. I'm afraid I
  1299. didn't find the news report of the incident as
  1300.             objective.
  1301.                   In the end, I carried her chair for her to her van and
  1302. we parted, if not as friends, at least as individuals who respect each
  1303. other's rights. It would be interesting to see how
  1304.             many other situations were inflated by inaccurate reporting
  1305. in that article as well.
  1306.                   Two truths are becoming readily apparent in this day
  1307. and age: Guns save lives and freedom, and the press will not tell the
  1308. truth about that.
