Subject: Re: (utah-astronomy) Update from the valley and a question and a reminder
Chuck,
I purchased a Sky Commander, and have used those encoders, mounted on the
ends of the shafts. My preliminary use of this unit looks encouraging, but
has made me realize that my scope had gone out of collimation, the legs of
my Astrola no longer fit the polar alignment holes in my driveway, and that
my tube may not be not be perfectly parallel with its cradle. I'm in the
process of learning how to tweak everything back in. My mount is not
motorized, but it sounds like yours has had a tougher life than mine.
Please send again the address for the IO tour. Thanks for including me.
I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

OK, gang, tomorrows the big day! I tried calling
Vaughn to make sure we were still on, but he's not
answering the phone, so I am assuming that everything
is still "GO".
The time: 10:00 am
The place: 4994 South 300 West, Murray.
This will probably take one to two hours. We should
try and finish up by noonish, both so we can eat
lunch, and Vaughn can get back to work.
All of you who contacted me privately are on the
attendance list.
I will be away from email from 11 am Friday until
Monday morning, so if you have to cancel, don't worry
about letting me know, just take care of business.
See you there!
Chuck

BY WORD OF CAUTION FOR THOSE COMING FROM THE NORTH.
3rd West is closed at 45th South. We drove down 3rd West today and 45th
South is all torn up so we couldn't continue down to Vaughn's. We ended up
back almost to 39th before we found a street going east and then ended up on
State Street to 48th South and back down to 3rd West.
Best of luck in the road mazes.
Probably best would go to 53rd South exit and then go back along 3rd west.

Hi Gang, Well, I'm not a quitter but today, for one of the few times in my
life, I just gave up. At 10:30, after I was hung up on a maze of detours
and traffic jambs for around 3/4 of an hour, I finally quit trying to get
to Intermountain Optics. I think the closest I came was about 36th South
and 3rd West, but I could not get closer. What a mess of closed roads, with
an accident at one intersection slowing traffic eve more! Anyway, sorry I
couldn't get there, but at 10:30 I figured that the tour was well under way
anyhow, even if I could find the place. -- Joe Bauman

Thanks to all who managed to negotiate the no-man's
land that is Utah roads, and made it to Intermountain
Optics on Saturday. It was an interesting morining,
and Vaughn was in typical form. Joe Bauman, sorry you
couldn't get there! I discovered that a painless way
was to get to third west from 48th south, which was
open and clear. Vine street was also open for
business. But using streets aligned with freeway
exits was a waste of time, as you discovered. We'll
try and do it again, perhaps in the spring. Also, as
soon as NOVA is set up in their new digs, we may be
able to prevail upon Steve Dodds for a tour there.
Second subject:
I did a little research over the weekend, and
discovered that the IAU does NOT have LEGAL authority
to name celestial objects. Their authority is by
international convention of scientific organizations
only. Their respective governments have not taken
this convention the additional step of protecting
their naming efforts by making it legally binding. In
other words, it is just an international "gentlemen's
agreement" among the astronomers and other scientists
involved the various fields. They have agreed to use
the IAU designations among themselves, but there is no
legally binding "deed", "title", or other mechanism
that can make the designations stand up in a court of
law. It is up to the governments of the members of
the IAU to take this step. To my knwoledge, none have
so far, including the U.S.A.
Third subject:
Congratulations to SLAS president Kim Hyatt, for
having his award-winning 13" telescope mentioned in
the November issue of S & T! Also, former SLASer Bill
Kelley, who now resides in Arizona. He's certainly
getting a lot of mileage from that mirror-stressing
idea!

Subject: (utah-astronomy) 15 x 70 binos & shortwave receivers.
I borrowed a friend's home-brewed parallelogram mount
last night for another bino session with the big
cheapies. I'm still impressed. I saw M57 easily, and
globular clusters are even better when the binos are
held steady. They really are too big for this mount,
but I managed to pile on some dumbell weights and at
least get it balanced. This is a side-saddle mount in
it's current incarnation, I don't especially like
having to rotate the entire assembly for panning.
When I make my own, I'll try and include some pan
capability at the top of the arm, to reduce overall
motion. Does any list member have a parallelogram
mount that they are particularly fond of? Why?
Has anyone else ordered these binoculars?
Also, it appears that my old shortwave radio can't
pull in WWV like it used to. I used this radio to
time my exposures three years ago, when photographing
Hale-Bopp. At the time, I had no problem receiving a
clear signal at both 10MHz and 15MHz. Recent attempts
have revealed a Spanish-speaking station that bleeds
over WWV. The receiver doesn't have the selectivity
it used to. Can anyone recommend a shortwave receiver
that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Is the Hamtronics
kit still available?
Chuck

I received mine last week. Having never owned a tripod, binoculars, or
any kind telescope before, I'm still trying to figure out how to get these
things "hooked up" to a tripod--is there a right-angle adapter or
something like that?
I guess my next step will be to pick up some kind of "sky guide" so I'll
know where to point the darn things! :-)

It might not be your radio that has changed. Shortwave radio
propagation can vary dramatically both with the time of day and with
the eleven-year sunspot cycle. In addition to 10 and 15 MHz, you might
also try listening on 2.5, 5, and 20 MHz.
Cheerio,
Chris

Hi Chris; yes, you do need a 90-degree bino bracket.
Orion sells one or two different models, but they are
easily made from an angle bracket purchased from the
hardware store for about a buck or two. You'll also
need a female 1/4-20 hand knob or wing nut, and a male
1/4-20 knob or bolt to interface the bino with the
bracket, and the bracket with the tripod head.
You may have to turn the pan/tilt handle around so you
don't poke yourself in the throat. Ten minutes with a
standard tripod was enough to convince me that I
needed a parallelogram mount.
How do you like them, so far? I'm interested in your
impressions and if you feel that they are worth the
money. "Bear" brand, correct?
I was impressed by how solid the hinge/eyepiece bridge
is on these, for budget models.

I thought about that; I was hoping that solar max
wouldn't have as big an effect on radio propagation at
night, the only time I use it. (CME's aside)
Sometimes it gets better after midnight, making me
think that the band was just getting more crowded, and
as stations signed off for the night, reception would
gradually improve.
This radio can't access 2.5, 5, 20, or 25 MHz,
unfortunatley. I wish Radio Shack still made those
old TimeCubes...
Thanks
Chuck

there any chance that you'll be at SPOC on saturday for the star party? I'd

Is there a star party at SPOC this Saturday (Sep 30)? I just recently
joined the SLAS, but didn't see one mentioned for this date in the Sep NOVA
Newsletter. But if there is one, I would like to go.
Thanks,
Troy

Hi Howard:
Right now, it's not looking likely that I'll be at
SPOC Saturday, but if plans change, I'll let you know.

Hi Joe:
You're right, but my current !*#$ budget model only
receives WWV on 10 and 15MHz.

By now most of you have probably heard or read about
the fireball seen over southern CA and AZ last night.
I was out in the yard with the big binos again, and,
while I didn't see the fireball, I did notice a
higher-than-normal level of sporadic meteor activity,
mostly in the west and northwest.
Can someone near their references check and see if we
are calendrically near a known shower?
Anybody else notice meteor activity last night?
Between about 8:30 and 10:00 MDT?
Chuck

The only public star parties I know of for this weekend are in southern
Utah. I believe there will be a private SLAS star party here in the
north but I don't know where it will be held. For that you might want
to contact SLAS Prez Kim Hyatt at kimh@mhtn.com.
