WOW! Now that's dedication to one's interests!
If anyone on this list drove further than Dave Bennett, please post. I will
send the person who came the farthest a FREE 6" x 6" piece of Baader
Planetarium solar-filter material.
Dave, if no-one beats your distance, you will be the winner! Send me your

Now I feel silly for whining about driving only 25 miles!
Thank you, Dave, for showing such great support.

Chuck,
Great idea about the tourist module attached to MIR. Would be a great way to
boost interest and it would be a safe environment!
Is there any benefit to businesses that could do things in space? I'll show my
ignorance here... but perhaps it'd be easier to manufacture something in zero g,
or... oh, who knows. I'm sure if they did have some sort of touristy place for
people to go, there would be some who would be able and willing to afford it. I
know if I won that $52million lottery jackpot I'd be up there in a heartbeat, no
matter the risks...okay, maybe if there was some big risk... but hey, if I can
survive two rollovers in life, ain't no shuttle gonna get rid of me! :)

Hello all,
I am on another email list which is pretty active, and the list
administrator posts a topic of the week each week. I was
wondering if the folks on this list would be interest in such a
thing, to stir up discussion? I'd of course take suggestions for
any topic which people would like to discuss. There are about 35
people on this list now, and hopefully more will join... but, if
we have a topic to discuss, perhaps it'll boost member
participation...
Any thoughts?

Perhaps we could ask for folks' opinions on what they like (and would like to

Subject: (utah-astronomy) Star Parties
Okay, we had a suggestions to discuss Star Parties. I've put
together a list of questions. Feel free to answer them if you
like, and post to the list. Or add your own questions, or modify
these, or whatever...
PUBLIC STAR PARTIES
1. How often do you attend Public Star Parties?
2. Do you usually bring a telescope and show the public objects?
Or do you usually come to observe through other telescopes?
3. Do you feel the number of Public Star Parties offered is
adequate? Why?
4. What do you like best about Public Star Parties?
5. What do you like least?
6. If you don't attend star parties, why? What would you like
to see at them that would encourage you to attend more?
PRIVATE STAR PARTIES
1. How often do you attend Private Star Parties?
2. Do you usually bring a telescope? Or do you usually come to
observe through other telescopes?
3. What do you like best about Private Star Parties?
4. What do you like least?
5. Where do you like private star parties to be held?
Please give your general opinion of Star Parties, both public and
private. Also, please say where you mostly attend the star
parties, be it in SL, Ogden, Provo, Cedar City, etc... and which
locations in each area.
Thanks for your cooperation! I hope to hear as many responses as
there are people on the list! ;)

I make it to just about every one of the SLAS star parties and a few others as
well (usually in S. Utah).

Usually bring a telescope and sometimes video equipment to allow the public to
view the Moon and planets on a monitor.

Adequate? Yes, but I would not mind seeing more. We do public star parties
(IMHO) to serve the public so the more we do the better our chances of
accomplishing our goal. And besides, as Deloy Pierce says: "Seven days without
a star party makes one weak." :-)

Showing the public "what's up".

Very seldom but only because the private star parties are usually held the same
night's Dr. Holy and I are doing public star parties in S. Utah.

Not very often. I used to go almost every weekend about six years ago, then
abruptly stopped. Now I go maybe once per year.
> 2. Do you usually bring a telescope and show the public objects?

I used to bring a telescope, my C8, but now I just go to observe
> 3. Do you feel the number of Public Star Parties offered is

I don't really go to enough to actually know if there are enough. I'll leave this
estimate to those who frequent the star parties more often.
> 4. What do you like best about Public Star Parties?
To talk to the people I haven't seen in a while.

>
> 1. How often do you attend Private Star Parties?
Usually once a year, I like going to Elizabeth Pass with SLAS.
> 2. Do you usually bring a telescope? Or do you usually come to

I usually observe through other scopes now, though perhaps this year I'll dust off
the ol' C8.
> 3. What do you like best about Private Star Parties?
I like that there are fewer people than public star parties. I like to be able to
go camping and bring my dogs. I like sitting around a campfire and talking about
astronomy or how the club was way-back-when. :) I like seeing dark-sky objects
and not having to deal with traffic and lights. I'm not a big-crowd person, and I
like the smaller groups in the private star parties. Most of all I like the
camping.
> 5. Where do you like private star parties to be held?
Since I'm more of a camper than an observer now, I like the camp sites like
Elizabeth Pass and other mountainous areas. You probably won't see me at Rush
Valley!

I attend the SLAS star parties located at SPOC or Little Mountain, and the private
star parties located in the Uintahs or other camping locations. I've always
enjoyed the star parties and have had a great time seeing objects and talking to
the people. I think star parties are a great resource for the public, an easy way
for them to become familiar with astronomy.

Okay, we had a suggestions to discuss Star Parties. I've put

PUBLIC STAR PARTIES
1. How often do you attend Public Star Parties?
8 to 10 a year.
2. Do you usually bring a telescope and show the public objects?
Or do you usually come to observe through other telescopes?
I bring a couple of telescopes.
3. Do you feel the number of Public Star Parties offered is
adequate? Why?
I think that they are about right. If there were too many we might have
people lose interest or Astronomers might burn out.
4. What do you like best about Public Star Parties?
I like interacting with the public that show up. I enjoy showing people
the different things that I can find. I also like the "Dark Sky" so that I
can see more galaxies and nebulas.
5. What do you like least?
300 people and three astronomer and clouds.
6. If you don't attend star parties, why? What would you like
to see at them that would encourage you to attend more?
PRIVATE STAR PARTIES
1. How often do you attend Private Star Parties?
2 or 3.
2. Do you usually bring a telescope? Or do you usually come to
observe through other telescopes?
I bring a couple of scopes.
3. What do you like best about Private Star Parties?
I can spend more time looking for evasive objects.
4. What do you like least?
I really do like to show people what I find. There aren't usually very
many people to show them too at private parties.
5. Where do you like private star parties to be held?
Anywhere Dark.
Please give your general opinion of Star Parties, both public and
private. Also, please say where you mostly attend the star
parties, be it in SL, Ogden, Provo, Cedar City, etc... and which
locations in each area.
I really enjoy any time that I can get out and use my telescopes. I enjoy
teaching my children about astronomy. I enjoy showing people the different
things that we can see. I even enjoy helping someone set up their toy store
telescope for the first time. I usually go to all the OAS parties.
Thanks for your cooperation! I hope to hear as many responses as
there are people on the list! ;)

Both. Not at star parties, but in my neighborhood, at schools, privately,
etc.

No opinion.
>4. What do you like best about Public Star Parties?
No opinion.

Too many people, kids, noise, headlights, dust, and drunk freaks.

See #5 above. Also, as I recall, SLAS (and other clubs) hold their
star-parties on Friday nights. Folks, I have to get up at 5 am to go to
work on Fridays. I am in no condition to stay up late that night, as a
result. Saturday nights are by far the best night for me to stay up late.

About once every other month or so. More frequently in summer, less so in
winter.

Have done both equally.
>3. What do you like best about Private Star Parties?
Few people, good music, privacy, SATURDAY NIGHTS, plum brandy.
>4. What do you like least?
Other people wanting to use MY eyepieces and accessories, then returning
them with a thumbprint on the glass. Other people wanting me to find 10th
magnitude or brighter objects for them. (I'll admit that it was an ego trip
for the first 25 years, now it's old)
>5. Where do you like private star parties to be held?
On private property, or secluded locations. Places where random headlights
and curious bystanders do not show up.

Public parties = no general opinion. Private parties = More time observing,
less time answering questions, and you don't worry about equipment getting
stolen.

Used to go to SLAS parties at Little Mtn, SPOC, wherever.

OAS meets the second Tues of each month at the Ott Planetarium at Weber State.
Our public star parties are at Antelope Island. Our private camping parties
are on Monte Cristo. The dates for the parties are posted on our web page.
The address for our web page is http://physics.weber.edu/oas/oas.html. Last I
heard we had about 60 members. I have been a member for 3 years. The club
was started in the early 70s.

meetings? Where? Where are your private and public star parties
usually held? I've always been curious.
Also, I'm interested to know who on this list is affiliated with
what club. I'm SLAS, like I said, and have been for... oh, about
17 years now, off-n-on. Who else is on? Any clubs? No clubs?
Out of Utah?
Thanks,
Cyn
