Subject: (TrekTrade) Info needed
Hello all:
I no longer have enough space to store all of my Star Trek stuff so I'd
like to sell some of the larger items. I have the following two playsets and
I need to know what is a fair price to ask for them.
ST:TNG Bridge Playset- This was opened once and the stickers were
applied. Otherwise it's in near mint condition and the box in excellent shape
too. I have seen this listed for $150-250.
Generations Engineering Playset- This was opened once and the stickers
were applied. Otherwise it's in near mint condition and the box in excellent
shape too. I have seen this listed for as much as $80.
I know there is a lot of disagreement about "fair market value" versus
"scalping." I don't want to charge more than is fair, but I don't want to be
taken advantage of either. For example, I had an offer of $20 ea. for these
two playsets. This is 1/2-2/3 less than the retail price I paid for them in
the store. I'm not criticizing the person who made the offer... I believe it
was made in good faith. But I honestly feel that these toys would have
appreciated, not depreciated, at least some since they have been out of
production for several years now.
I understand that the fact that they have been opened and the stickers
applied reduces the value some, but if a "mint condition" specimen is valued
at over $100, I hardly think putting the stickers on reduces it to $20. Like I
said, my goal is to come up with a "fair" price. It really steams me to see a
figure that is still on the shelves being sold for 3-4 times its value. To me
that defines "scalping." But when a toy is no longer available and hasn't
been for years, isn't a mark-up of, say, 50% of the original retail price
appropriate?
Any feedback you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Bruce

I have a lot of BB original issue and WB original issue from 1994 and
some BB Alternate Universe cards that I want to sell. I also have lots
of complete sets of the 25th anniversary Series 1 and 2 cards and some
holograms. I also have the complete set of Hallmark ornaments from 1991
to the defiant all in excellent condition with the boxes. I also have
two of the U.S.S. Enterprise gold boarder 10 1/2" plates still in the
box. If you or anyone you know has an interest in these items please
contact me and make me an offer. I also have three 8x10 color
autographed pictures, (Leonard Nimoy, Leonard Nimoy and George Takei,
Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis) all the pictures are simple name
autographs. Thank you for your time.

Well, you can't make a general statement about this stuff. It's all worth
whatever someone is willing to pay for it. The guy who made you the offer
sounds like a dealer who's planning to resell it. He can't buy it for
"fair market" and expect to make anything.
We all want to believe that we bought the right items. We bought all the
stuff that's gonna go up and everybody's gonna go crazy over. Everybody
else bought the wrong stuff. Well, if we're ALL right, who's buyin'<G>?
I'd suggest selling them at auction - like Lynn's or on eBay. Set a
minimum (or reserve) that you can live with and whatever they sell for will
be close to what they're worth.
Just so you know, I seem to see the TNG bridge selling often on eBay near
the original retail price. I don't think I've ever seen the Engineering
set before yesterday and I can't recall if there was a minimum on it or not.
LLAP,
Vince
