Subject: (TrekTrade) Do you know this eBay seller?
Date: 01 Nov 1999 06:31:27 -0500
Hi, All,
Need some help, if you can. Several months ago, I bought an autographed
photo (from STTMP) of Bill Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, signed by both with a
COA. I just learned (from someone who is in a position to know for sure)
that the autographs are fakes. I've gone thru my records and cannot find
enough info on the seller to be able to reach him and wondered if anyone
could help.
His/her name is D. E. Schneeberger (got this from my check register), but I
can'y find an eMail or snailmail address.
The COA is from Classic Memorabilia, if anyone knows that name.
Thanx for any help.
LLAP,
Vince

Subject: (TrekTrade) E-Bay autograph Sellers
Date: 01 Nov 1999 09:45:41 -0600
In response to Vince's e-bay question.
With all the lawsuit happy forgers on e-bay I can't respond directly to
Vince's question about that particular dealer in an open forum like this.
I've been collecting autographs for 15+ years and am a somewhat informed
buyer. These days e-bay is known as a haven for forgers. Estimates are that
75-90% of the autographs being sold on e-bay are fakes. There are a lot of
high volume sellers (1000 items per month) that wouldn't know an authentic
autograph if it fell on them. It's these high volume sellers that skew the
percentage upwards. There's a lot of small volume sellers selling forgeries
as well.
If you want to be an informed buyer go to Dejanews and do a search on the
name David Tabb in the alt.collecting.autographs group-that should help you
make informed decisions. It will require quite a bit of reading but it'll
be worth the effort.
As a buyer, I stopped browsing e-bays autograph groups 3 months ago. It
wasn't worth the effort because of the amount of phoney crap I found. The
high volume sellers flood all the areas and you can't find anybody good.
The best way to determine suspicious sellers there's a couple of ways to
find them:
- do a search on their auctions for the last month. Count up how many of
one person these characters are selling. 10 Sarah Michelle Gellars? 15
Jennifer Love Hewitts? 8 Alyssa Milanos? Not bloody likely. Also check the
completed auctions. If there are alot of itms that didn't sell at all- good
names but not a bid-there's a clue.
- actually you want to know the best test for a forger- Phantom Menace
autographs. Anyone who sells Natalie Portman as the Queen or Liam Neeson
entire inventory is suspect. These two do not sign autographs at all. The
high volume forgers haven't caught onto this yet. As soon as i see this in
a seller inventory I'm out of there.
- beware anyone who has an opening bid of more than $20. There's a few
sellers who have high opening bids becuase a lot of people know they're
selling fakes and they won't get many bids. So they have a high opener and
all they need is one bid and they've made ther profit.
- Check Iconographs on-line catalog for reference- this seller's reputation
is beyond reproach.
Their on-line catalog is a great reference tool.
- Don't be fooled by high feedback. Sure they completed the transactions to
the buyers satisfaction but did they sell authentic items? Only the seller
really knows.
This was simplistic but i hope it helps.

As do I- some of these forgers are quite good.

Those were just examples- they're in demand and popular targets for the
forgers now. I couldn't begin to name them all.
however, I have seen many Trek cons where the dealers are
>getting an actor to sign several dozen photos (for a fee, of course, or a
>donation per sig to the actor's favorite charity), so volume in the case of

Trek actors are always a bit tricky because there's lots of real ones
floating around. HOWEVER the most forged are Shatner,Nimoy, Avery, and
Jeri Ryan as they are most in demand. There's not a lot of point in forging
the lesser names because THEY are so common-but it DOES happen alot!

That's true- I was actually thinking of one or two particualr sellers who
always has signed celebrity nudes from people who we all know wouldn't.
Marina doesn't even acknowledge being in Wicked Lady-never mind signing a
nude pic from it. I've talked to a lot of legitimate sellers over this
e-bay mess and they all believe strongly that if it's a quality item the
people in the know will bid on it so they have a low opening bid.
Problem is that these days the legitimate sellers are getting swamped by
the forgers. A Tia Carrere from Iconographs went for $8 while another from
a suspected forger went for $25. (I asked for a better scan 3+ days before
auction end because I couldn't make out the signature- it was a small scan.
He didn't respond at all- which to me spoke volumes. But I digress.....)

Sooner or later the forgers will catch on I'm afraid.

Other good sellers- autographworld and JD Bardwell out of NH. They both
post on E-bay and are partners. Again I've never heard bad words about
either. There's Collector's Arena (Graphrackr Kevin) and a guy in Chicago
whose name escapes me at the moment.
There are a lot of casual fan sellers that are good but you have to find them.
Sorry to ratle on again about this- but e-bay gets on my nerves these days.
I wrote to Dirty Pierre and the Feedbaqck on our site people last week
asking them to clean it up. Considering how much money they rake off the
crooks- I doubt it'll happen.

I'm sending this to everyone who heard about my buying a fake autograph
thru eBay. The seller's USERID on eBay and mailing address are both:
Deschnee1@aol.com
This is the seller from whom I had purchased an autographed photo from
STTMP of Bill Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, apparently signed by both. I got
it on excellent authority that both sigs were fakes and advised him of this
fact.
I got a reply from the seller that is quoted below, in its entirety. I
responded to this eMail with all the info he requested, except for the copy
of the cancelled check because my bank doesn't return cancelled checks,
but I had the date and check number. At this point, it looks like he will
honor his promise of a "100% satisfaction guarantee" (someone noted that
his item descriptions did NOT include a money back guarantee - and that's
true - but he does guarantee satisfaction, so we'll see if that holds
true). Here's his reply:

Subject: (TrekTrade) DS9 MFTF Golden Moments cards
Date: 09 Nov 1999 11:44:19 -0800
Hello All!
As a public service to all of you, I just receieved my DS9 Golden
Moments cards and I thought I'd let everyone know what this set consists
of:
G1 - Jadzia's death
G2 - Tying the Knot
G3 - Sisko Saves Kirk
G4 - Sisko the Sci-Fi Writer
G5 - Mirror Universe
G6 - Little Green Men
G7 - A Kiss
G8 - The Sword of Kahless - Okay, if you voted and helped put this one
in the set as opposed to "Duet" you, I miust say, suck. This one was
the only one to surprise me getting in and it's sad! Such a bad
episode.
G9 - Worf Joins DS9
All in all - despite G8 (grumble) - this is a very nice little set
and SkyBox still has 150 availiable. So, if you were hedging on getting
one sight unseen, there it is! They're basically like the Insurrection
Gold cards - except more embossed.
Also, if you've written to SkyBox about my proposed DS9 Profiles 2
set, THANK YOU! You've got them seriously considering it! If you
haven't and want to know what I'm talking about, e-mail me and I'll send
you the info. If you know what I'm talking about, thought it was a good
idea, but never got around to sending SkyBox a letter or e-mail, please
do! Any and all support now is likely to push them over the edge into
making the new set!
Thanks All!

Date: 10 Nov 1999 17:57:33 -0800
Hi!
I don't think this succeeded in getting out yesterday when I tried
to, so here goes. The DS9 MFTF Golden Moments sets have begun
shipping. It's a nice set, they look like the Insurrection gold cards.
If you've been hedging on getting them sight unseen, the winning cards
were:
G1 - Jadzia's Death
G2 - Tying the Knot
G3 - Sisko Saves Kirk
G4 - Sisko the Sci-Fi Writer
G5 - Mirror Universe
G6 - Little Green Men
G7 - A Kiss
G8 - The Sword of Kahless (Okay, if you voted and you helped this one
win over "Duet" then you're a loser! This was such a crummy episode, I
can't believe this became part of the Golden Moments set, are you people
insane?! How is it that this one got in but nothing from "Duet,"
"Sacrifice of Angels" or write ins for, say, "The Die Is Cast"? The
only true surprise in the set!)
G9 - Worf Joins DS9
Anyway, it's a very nice little set and SkyBox still has 150 left!

I broke down 6 boxes of Voyager: Closer To Home and did NOT get a
complete set of the "interstellar species" cards. I did pull both a
yellow AND orange version of IS5 and IS9. Which others come in both
colors? All?
Anyway, I'd like to trade:
Extra (all yellow/green):
IS2(3), IS3, IS4, IS5, IS6(3), IS7(2)
Need (any color):
IS1, IS8
I'll also trade for any orange/red ones other than IS5 & IS9)
Thanks!
