Subject: RS: PotW: Potato Stamping
I saw this in a book called Stamp Magic. It's a book about home decor
stamping and I really think that if you're into stamping on walls and
such, this is a book worth having. The weeks PotW is Potato Carving and
Stamping.
Potato Carving
What You'll Need:
Medium to large sized raw potato (depending on the size of the image
wanted)
Large kitchen knife (straight blade, so jagged edges)
Pen Felt tip works great
Craft knife
Cookie cutters (optional)
Craft paints (Deka, Aleene's Acrylic, etc)
Faom brush or roller and foam tray for paints
Sad Empty wall or
Sad Empty fabric
Step-By-Step:
1. Cut the potato in halk with the kitchen knife.
2. Draw your image on the cut potato, start with easy designs. I
started with a butterfly that I had from a stencil. Place the
stencil on the potato and trace around the inside.
3. Use the kraft knife to carefully cut away the parts not needed.
Please! cut away from your hands, body and image.
4. Remember that the potato won't last more than a few hours
before it begins to deteriorate, so have an extra drawing of the
image so you can cut another stamp if needed.
5. Pour paint onto the foam tray and use the foam brush to apply
the paint to the stamp. This is better than dipping. You have
more control over how much paint goes on. You may also consider
allowing the potato to sit for about 15 minutes after cutting the
image to let it dry out slightly. Any more time than that and
the potato will start to shrink and you'll lose some of the
flatness of the image.
6. I used a t-shirt and stamped the butterfly on it several times
in different colors. Then I made a grass stamp and stamped grass
under the butterflies and got real brave and made a few flowers
in the grass. If stamping on a t-shirt, be sure to put a brown paper
bag under the front of the shirt between the layers. And don't
pile on the paint!!
7. Stamping on wall is the same as the shirt, just vertical!
Hint and Tips:
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN YOU STAMP A POTATO STAMP IN ANY OF YOUR STAMP
PADS!!!!!!!! Was that loud enough?
Don't do it. You'll be introducing water and starch into the ink pad and
that's NOT good. Just don't do it.
The very nicest thing about using potatos is that they can be thrown away
after you're done! And they're cheap, too.
Another way to make the image is to use a cookie cutter. I put the
cookie cutter into very hot water so it's really warm, then press it into
the potato about a half inch. Leaving it in the potato, I can cut away
the rest of the potato and have a perfect outline of what I want. Then
if I want to define something in the images, I use a craft knife, or my
lino cutters and carve out the stuff I don't need from the inside of the
image. Very easy. Small cookie cutters can be had at most of those cool
cooking stores in the mall-and for pretty cheap! I'm going this weekend
to stock up!!
If anyone has any other ideas on how to use potatos as stamps, please
post!!!

I like to use those plastic files that you store magazines in. I have a
craft room [refered to by some as my "crap" room]. I set these on the
counter. The sides are high enough to protect the edges of the paper. I
sort my paper by color. Great way to see what I have at a glance.
Happy Holidays

RUN (don't walk) to your nearest Costco. They have this literature
organizer... it's 36 shelves/slots that fit 8╜x11 paper or cardstock. Each
slot can hold approx 150 sheet of cardstock.
I have 2 of these and I love them. I would love to have 1 more, as 2 are not
enough to keep my growing stock (I now carry over 70 kinds of cardstock!!)

This sounds like a great idea, Anna. I'm staring at some empty CD cases
right now at the computer desk! I'm going to put those little halo-mounted
UM's that tend to get lost in paper envys in the cases.
Right now, I use the rubbermaid shoe boxes to store some of my stamps by my
favorite catagories-both wood mounted and UM's in paper envys. Others go
into binders, the biggest ones I can find, where the UM's are on page
protectors with hook tape or stick-it-over-and-over glue. And then I have a
small hutch with shelves where I display my newer/favorite wood mounted
stamps. I'm kind of attached to my wood mounted stamps and would never
convert those.
Now, if I could just get a good index system going--a project for the new
year, or the next millenium??
Hope you all are having a wonderful holiday season~

Hi Patty:
The cheaper acetate is fine to use for window cards, but if you plan to do any
embossing on acetate, you must use the heat resisitant type used in copiers
and lasers. The less expensive type which is not for copiers and lasers will
buckle on you as it cannot withstand the heat from an embossing gun.

I need help with my Colorbox pigment pads and re-inking them. They were a
little dry so I took the pigment bottle and dropped ink on them and it
hasn't absorbed. It just sits on top of the pad and I can't use them
because it's way too much ink on the stamps, gets deep into the stamps.
However, the gold pad absorbed the ink and it worked fine, the untinted
pad was yukky and I had to was it off and am trying to reink it.
Thanks, KalicoKathy

I have my cardstock in a portable file box..hard plastic one with a handle
on it. For smaller quantities of paper, I slip them into sheet protectors.
They are arranged by colors on a color wheel...larger quantitites of any
paper is in plastic bag. Then I can open the box and looking from
overhead, find exactly what I want. For background papers I have them in a
separate hanging folder, not in any kind of order :)

Yep, yep, yep. I forgot not everyone thinks of that one too (the tissue
paper thing). I wrap half my gifts in tissue just for that purpose! One
of my favorite brands is Marcel Shurman; particularly the gold ones and
vintage Christmas images. I also make sure to use no tape (close the
package with ribbon), so more of the tissue is reusable. ( It's voila')

Hi Sherry!
Received your card on Christmas Eve ... you've got a great sense of timing
:)
The velvet paper is **very interesting** .... and your choice of image was
priceless - Pooh works so well with the velvet!
We've got very little snow -- only a few inches. I'm so frustrated with my
new SkiDoo sitting out in the garage. Today, I can't resist the urge any
longer, and am going out for a bit - even if I do have to throw some
gravel. It seems there's snow all over Atlantic Canada, but not right here
on the north shore of NB ... maybe it blows too hard!
Happy New Year!!

Subject: RS: The Things You Find Out
How about that! I've had this friend (Kim) for *years.* She moved down
south about 3 years ago and now I rarely see her. I just saw her at
Christmas time and she is now making paper!!! I told her about my rubber
stamping and she's going to make some paper for me! Her paper is so
beautiful. It is nicer (IMNSHO) than most handmade flower petal papers
because the petals aren't mushed down into the paper. They are in smaller
pieces than what I'm used to seeing and they sort of sit up on top of the
paper. Plus, the colors of the petals are so vibrant! Bright blues, yellows
and reds. I can't wait!
She gave her MIL the most thoughtful gift that we could do with our
stamping:
She bought a box and painted and stenciled it with acrylic paints. She then
put a really pretty gold metallic ribbon in the box that was long enough to
hang out the front. She attached the ribbon to the very back/bottom of the
box. On top of the ribbon she put a set of cards and envies. When her MIL
wants a card, she just pulls the ribbon and it lifts the cards up above the
rim of the box. Very elegant and pretty.
Cheers!!!
Christine

I am going to lower the prices on these because they are not moving. The

I have just made up 6 grabbags with 2 DOTS stamps and 4 others in each.
These are $22. These are used( most hardly used at all) stamps of mine.
They all contain a few Large stamps, a couple of medium and maybe one

Parked on Rubber, Me and Carrie Lou, etc. I can ship up to 2 grabbags in
one package for $3. Over 2 postage is addl $2 per grabbag. If anyone is
