Thanks to everyone for all the info I have got for my trip to Canada/USA
which is only a week away now!
What I'm asking for now is packing tips! It's been awhile since I've been
to the States (February 1993) and I'm out of practice in packing. So I
need tips - what to pack, what sort of weather should I expect, toys for
the toddler that don't take up too much room and handy must pack items that
never appear on your list and when you're away you think how could I forget
that!! I'm sure everyone has things they have found invaluable on holidays
and I'd love to know.

I had a phone call tonight from Liz (IsaStamper) who rang to say that the
swap cards have arrived in Mt Isa, Cloncurry and Toowoomba. Everyone loves
their cards!
Liz's server is down and she apologises for not being able to post to the
list personally but will do this as soon as she can send e-mail again.
This was my first "real" contact with a fellow list member. Very exciting!
My DH can't understand why I'm so excited about a phone call from someone
I've never met before LOL.
Anyway Liz is a real sweetie and I still can't believe she took the time to
ring me!

Subject: RS: terrie's newbie swap recieved!
got my newbie cards today! great buncha cards, gals.. not a newbie in this
bunch!
I got cards from:
Jhone Messinger-Dickson...
Jhone started with a peppery beige cardstock with the right front edge
trimmed with fancy fiskars and embossed in black. she stamped these exotic
shapes that she says inside are hearts upside down! on ivory cardstock and
embossed them in gold, and cut them out. she layered the 2 upside-down
hearts on a rectangle of black mulberry with feathered edges, and under the
top one she hung a fine black cord strung with small gold and wood beads.
striking card, jhone!
Sherry (sherry who?)
Sherry started with glossy white cardstock, and on that she layered a piece
of.. um.. kind of deep dusky teal cardstock (great color!). The image is
stamped on another piece of white glossy cardstock, and cut into an oval
using.. fancy fiskars. The image is of a wine bottle and wine glasses and
grape vines and says Friendship is the Wine of Life. This is embossed in
black, and then colored in with markers. great job on the coloring too, I
especially like the leaves! This card needs to go in Kimberlee's wine swap
contest thing!
Susan E. Thomson
Susan.. geezle, where to start with this one. from the bottom up I guess.
Susan started with the most awesome cardstock I think I've ever seen.. it's
gray, and heavy, almost like cardboard.. just like cardboard in fact, I
don't know how she managed to cut it, let alone fold it.. it's wonderful, I
must have some. she says it's judikins. it's got bits of all sorts of
stuff in it, you can spot bits of newspaper even.. is great. and she
trimmed the edges with fancy scissors (or.. with a fancy blade in a rotary
cutter.. I'm gonna bet that's what she did, I don't want to know if she's
good enough with those scissors to have done this that way!). now that
we've got a paragraph on the paper (rofl).. she's got a layer of cream
paper stamped all over with dog pawprints in brown for a background paper,
and on that she's got a big dog wearin' sunglasses and sippin' lemonade.
the dog appears to be stamped in brown dye ink, and then he's flocked, and
his sunglasses are colored red, and the lenses and his nose are shiney
black EP! oops.. forgot a layer, under the dog, on top of the paw prints,
is a smaller rectangle of flecky cream mulberry paper. And up top, on a
rectangle of red edged in the same scissors as the card (as is the pawprint
stuff and the mulberry..) embossed in gold, it says "Thanks for
EVERYTHING", and THIS is held on/sewn on with raffia to make like a picture
frame sort of effect.. this is a great card, susan! I gotta get me some of
this paper!
Jaimee
Jaimee did a way cute card AND envelope! she started with white
semi-glossy cardstock I'd say, and on that she's layered an oval of
lavender paper cut with fancy fiskars.. the same ones sherry used! on this
she's stamped a way cute gal in a big coat with heart buttons and wild
frizzy hair and a big straw hat, holdin' a basket of flowers. very cute
gal! and she's embossed her with black EP and then colored her very
nicely! she's got a tiny bow of satin ribbon above the gal, and star
stickers in the corners.. lovely card! inside she's stamped a cluster of 3
(positive image!) stars in purple ink, and the saying "Cherish Yesterday
Dream Tomorrow Live Like Crazy Today".. I love this! love the font, love
the saying, is great! where'd this come from, jaimee? it comes with a
lavender envelope with the purple stars stamped on the flap. great job!
and last but not least, Kimberlee Dick..
Kimberly.. too cool, gal! this is way neat. Kimberlee made a triangle
card. it's red duplex cardstock trimmed with the same fiskars jaimee and
sherry used (popular style, that one!) and stamped all over in black with a
rose. then the rose is also stamped on.. glossy sticker paper? embossed
in silver, colored with markers, and placed in the center of the triangle.
very striking! on the back it says " This special little card comes your
way, stamped with love, to brighten your day!" but the neatest of all is
the "envelope". She's got it enclosed in.. what I'm going to guess is 2
layers of baking parchment!.. cut in circles, folded over so it looks
almost flowerish where it meets up in back, sealed with a heart sticker..
and between the 2 circles she's got all this confetti floating around and
it's still floating around, because it's sandwiched between the parchment,
which means it is NOT all over my carpet! I love this, kimberlee..
excellent idea, one I'm bound to wind up stealing at some point!
Thank you ladies! Excellent cards! Lets not hear ANY more newbie talk
from any of you! Thank you too, Terrie, for hosting! great swap!
(Jhone, forward this to Terrie please.. I couldn't dig up her address..)

The Swing-A-Ling card is a fun, three sided, dimensional card that is
extremely easy to make. I developed my own simplified version based on the
elaborate, Victorian era swing cards, to teach in classes. The
reproductions of these beautiful cards are available in gift shops, and are
manufactured by Ampersand Studio out of England.... >>
Just wanted to share with everyone that I know who the author is for this
card! My friend, Mary Kerr, is a talented rubber stamper who first spotted
the Victorian swing card in an antique store and saw its potential for
stamped cards. She wrote the instructions and developed the template for the
original Swing-A-Ling card, as she does with many of her own creative
designs.
Thought I'd pass it along so you could update your records...

Subject: RS: Itty Bitty Book Swap Arrived (Part 1)
Patience is a virtue, and I am working on it - I promise!! My package
arrived and it is wonderful!! Now that I have seen what I got back, I
really would have been broken-hearted if I hadn't gotten my package.
Now to describe these treasures - I'm going to break it into three parts
(I sent in a bunch). This swap is full of great ideas!!
Cindy used an etchling stamp on the front cover with a cat in front of a
open window - all beautifully colored (I love the green against the
brown and then that bright red umbrella really catches your eye). This
book was spectacularly bound - Six 1/8 inch holes were punched through
the covers and pages and a white ribbon was threaded through in a
criss-cross pattern. The binding adds such an elegant touch!
Suzannne Reynolds started with a match box covered with brown paper
stamped with brownie images. She made the sliding part look like a
drawer (including a brad to be the drawer pull). The book has a dark
brown cover (same paper was also used as an accent other places) and
accordian pages which pull out of the "drawer" (but the end remains
attached inthe bottom of the drawer). The pages are full of more
brownies (who are evidently afraid of frogs). Really neat idea!!
Rosemarie Smith made a beautiful green/kraft colored book that required
no glue or sewing! The paper is all folded and interlocked around
cardboard covers (unseen), so that the outside of the covers is green
and the inside brown - also the spine is brown. The pages are accordian
folded and tucked into the covers. To close the book, Rosemarie made a
sliding paper band with a grape wreath stamped and colored in. She even
gave credit where we can find the instructions. I'll have to do that
because I'm afraid if I started taking it apart, I wouldn't get it back
together right. Very professional.
StampinNutDar made a tiniest little brownie friendship book. She
stamped colored and the laminated the cover. Then the insides were sort
of double-layered, so that you peek through the outer page to see the
little brownies inside. This one I'll have to study too!! I know it
took a lot of work! Such a tiny treasure.
D1derly (StampnGrnd) made a sweet little "non-rhyming" poem book with
travel images. She folded the pages so that part of page 2 formed a
background for page one. Also part of the images are cut out, so that
they extend beyond the pages. Great ideas here, too! All was tied
closed with a ribbon.
Pat Vidal made a beautiful blue and white book with the front and back
covered with wallpaper - brilliant idea!! I'm going to do this! The
book has accordian pages and a ribbon which both closes the book and
serves as a sort of spine for the book. So pretty.
Lisa Sarpolis sent in a yeloow book with pretty pastel pages. On the
cover, she stamped a girl and a watermelon border with a twine bow and a
button for interest. The girl is colored in the same colors as the
watermelon - bright and pretty.
Now to part 2!!

What a great suprise! My SSS package came today! My Hubby and Son were
just as excited about it as I was...
For starters I got red fun foam..this stuff is great and there are so
many things you can do with it. I got a box of colored pencils..neat
cuz they are small enough to slip in my purse! Stampin on the run!
I also got glitter, glitter, glitter, glitter, glitter, and glitter!
This will be fun to use with my increditape that Lori Nelson sent to me!
I got a packet of Sandylion fuzzy puppy stickers..they even have tiny
little bones! I got some really cool, metallic streamer, it looks like
it has been though a tiny corrogater.....I love this stuff...It is a
blueish turquoise, and I cannot wait to try it out......I got a little
baggy of "puff" now, it I am wrong about this, I do believe I use it
like embossing powder....Let me know for sure> :) I got paper! Who
ever said diamonds were a girls best friend!? I love this paper......
This one will have you green with envy! I got the most beautiful, and
aromatic beeswax heart, it is green, and molded from a cookie mold...to
cool and smells terrific! It's a true treasure. Speaking of green, I
got a cute lil daisy style flower made from plastic canvas. It is
earning a home in one of my many many houseplants! I also received some
heart earrings.....These are really cool, they have real flowers in
them. Very cute!, and last but NOT LEAST! 4 fabric puffed hearts, tied
up with jute, all sewn up in a really pretty blue and pink floral
fabric. These will hang in my stamping room. This was a great box of
fun, I really enjoyed it, I was not even expecting my box this soon,
Thank you SSS......you really made my day! I will send you a card soon.
Love from, Tammy

I have decided that stampers are the best people around and I think I
know why. We have chosen a hobby/craft/obsession which has "giving" at
its very root. We make these wonderful things and then we give them
away. We pour our hearts, souls and pocketbooks into a little creation
and then pop it in an envelope and off it goes. Most people wouldn't do
that, I think. I they spent that much time on something, they couldn't
part with it, but that is the part that we relish. Aren't we great??!!

Susan -
Wow - what great cards from all over the US. I have enjoyed looking at
each and everyone and it was fun to see all the different ways of telling
us about "our" state. Now I need to find a special place to keep them
all - the magnets will reside on my refrigerator or on the light in my
stamp room.
Here are my votes:
Best use of color - Abbie Wence - Kansas - a bright and cheeful yellow
sunflower
Most Information - Gerrie Eder - Illiniois - several pages of graphics,
stamps and info about the state and the city of Chicago
Most Original - Linda Elliot - Nevada - an actual rubber postcard with
aliens directing one to Las Vegas or Area 51 - this may really become a
stamp in my collection
Most Talented - a toss up between Vicki Allen - the Oregon Beaver - done
on light tan marbled paper - layerd with green banana paper - more tan
card stock and the original Oregon logger - Mr. Beaver with a pile of
tiny logs and Judith Orieska - North Dakota - four Indian feathers and
beads stamped or embossed with a pale green ink or ep with touches of
copper on the feathers. The card is trimmed around the feathers to show
3 more feathers on the inside of the card. Just love looking at it.
And a great big thanks to Susan for hostessing this swap - it was fun and
a great way to learn a little more about fellow stampers.

A life-long city man, tired of the rat race, decided he was going to
give up the city life, move to the country, and become a chicken
farmer. He found a nice, used chicken farm, which he bought. Turns out
that his next door neighbor was also a chicken farmer. The neighbor came
for a visit one day and said, "Chicken farming isn't easy. Tell you what.
To help you get started, I'll give you 100
chickens."
The new chicken farmer was thrilled. Two weeks later the new neighbor
stopped by to see how things were going. The new farmer said, "Not too
good. All 100 chickens died." The neighbor said, "Oh, I can't believe that.
I've never had any trouble with my chickens. I'll give you 100 more."
Another two weeks went by, and the neighbor stops in again. The new
farmer says, "You're not going to believe this, but the second 100 chickens
died too." Astounded, the neighbor asked, "what went wrong?
What did you do to them?"
Well, says the new farmer, "I'm not sure whether I'm planting them too
deep or not far apart enough. >>

Subject: RS: H.A.L.O.S. Question
Sorry to post to the whole list but I'm not sure who to talk to.... A few
days ago, I read something & I'm not sure if it was on this list or on a web
site. Anyway, it said I could purchase a sampling of HALOS along with a
stamp (category of my choice) for only $5.00. This I would like to do
because I am interested in HALOS but would really like to see a sample of it
to know if it's truly the way I want to go. Whoever might know the answer
to this, *please tell me* where do I send my money?!? (nevermind now, I
can't send you *ALL* $5.00, you Silly Stampers!) TIA.

paying attention.

Subject: Re: RS: Laminator at Sam's??
I bought one at Sam's last March or April for around $100. I only used
it twice - to make my pins for the Ft Washington convention and one time
for a pin making class. However, I'm ready to get it out and laminate
my pins for Stampaway this week.
I like having my own and was thinking of laminating some postcards for
display in my store or to mail to people.
The one thing I didn't like was the tiny air spaces that showed on some
of the pins but I think that might be from the thickness of the pouches
- - intend to look for thinner ones. Another thing - the pins must be cut
out first and it's hard to move them to the laminator without having
them move - but if you do not put the pieces too close, it's not really
a problem.
I've rambled a lot but I guess I need to use it more.

I recommend:
Stamp Art Jubilee in Vinings (off the Paces Ferry exit on 285, head back
toward town (inside the Perimeter) after getting off the freeway -- or
better yet, call for directions, I suck at giving them!)
Binders in Midtown off Piedmont, Lindbergh Plaza Shopping Center
It's an art supply store but they have a decent RS section. Also, two
doors down they have a clearance center open from now til the end of
September, there are some GREAT bargains in there. They had papermaking
kits for $5 and ten cent markers and confetti the other day.
Stampers' Choyce is neat--I've heard that they recently moved to a new
store in Conyers but I'm not sure where so I can't give you more detail on
that.
Also, if you are in the Buckhead area and like Japanese stuff, don't miss
the Ichiyo Arts Center on East Paces Ferry Road. They have a great
selection of papers and a small selection of Japanese-themed rubber
stamps.
As for Krispy Kreme, the only possible choice is the store on Ponce de
Leon, where you can watch the donuts roll by on the conveyor belts...make
sure you go when the "HOT DONUTS NOW" sign is flashing! It's also a fun
place to go around 3-4 AM when the club crowds are stopping off for a
snack before heading home (or elsewhere)--great people watching!
Have a great time!
