That was a wonderful story! Ahhhhh! I met my boyfriend over the
internet, and when he asked for a pic I was very reluctant, but I sent
one anyway. Then, when we went on our first date I found out he had been
carrying it in his wallet, then when he was leaving he frantically found
the ticket stub from the movie and placed it with the pic in his wallet!
I haven't seen him now in a month. He's been 300 miles away in
Monticello, MN and the storms took the roof off of his apartment building
and he's been living in a hotel and the phone system is compromised so
there are no phones in the individual rooms right now. So, we haven't
even been able to e-mail or chat :( But, on Saturday I got a call from
him and he's coming up this weekend to see me. Yeah! Isn't it Friday
yet?

Yipeee!! I just made our reservations, so it's official! We thought we
were never going to find a reasonably priced place to stay, so I had just
about given up. Now I've done a complete about-face, and I'm bouncing
off the walls!!! Are there any get togethers planned besides the one in
Gatlinburg the night before?

Tonya, I got the unm's yesterday, and they are wonderful!
To anyone else who is thinking of ordering from Buffalo Stampede - the
unm's I received from Tonya are great! The rubber is really detailed
and excellent quality - I can tell already that these are going to be
very well-loved stamps. I also got some of her exotic papers - these
are so cool! Definitely need to order more soon!
Thanks for the trade, Tonya - I am very happy with what I received!

Subject: RS:Birdhouse/Mailbox swap received
Thanks to Tracy for hosting this fun swap and her mother for suggesting it.
Bin stamped a row of colorful birdhouses sitting on a tree branch with colorful
flowers. She mounted that on corrugated stock and spread oak leaves around it.
This is really pleasant to look at.
StampnGmd brayered a card very different than I'm used to seeing. It
appears that it was brayered first with a rainbow pad, layed down a mask in
the center with a scalloped edge and brayered over that in black. Then she
stamped four
different solid shaped birdhouses on poles and the neat thing part about
this is that she outlined each one with a gold metallic pen. Looks really cool.
Bev K. stamped a grouping of birdhouses on cream colored cardstock. She
colored each one in cheerful colors and what I think really makes this one
stand out is that she took two of the birdhouses from the grouping, cut them
out, colored them in and layered them over the fronts of the original image
with foam-mounting tape so they are 3-D. She also included a matching envy
where she dry-embossed the flap with a birdhouse. A very nice job.
Sandy Wineski made a collage where she stamped a birdhouse on a pole on
cream speckled stock and colored with watercolors. She tore around the
edges of it and glued that over a gold cord, light pink speckled papers and
crinkled light brown papers with silver/gold specks. Over the whole card
she sprinkled what looks like slivers of green leaves and all of this is
done on dark red cardstock. This card gives a really nice effect and the
first collage I've received.
KCDavis made a nice country-type card with potted plants in clay pots
interspersed amoung birdhouses and an old watering can(wish I had one of those).
Images are stamped and colored on ivory cardstock and she added a nice touch
by gluing a ceramic button which is a bag of potting soil and tied some
raffia thru
the button holes. There is a pen-stitched edging around the edge of this
layer. She then layered this card on top of a beige/brown checkerboard
design with the same pen-stitched edging and then layered all that over
cream colored cardstock. A real cute card.
Cheshire Cat stamped and colored two birdhouse images on cream cardstock,
cut these out and mounted them over a ribbon of ?,well, it looks like thin
strands of straw. This is then mounted on dark beige cardstock with a
ribbed texture. Inside the the card she stamped "Home is where you hang
your House". How fitting. I really like this one too.
This is my first swap and I'm glad to say that I'm left with a wonderful
impression. All the cards are great. My thanks go out to all the
participants and hostess. A job well done!

Yes!
Have you seen Rubbernecker's "Cards in the Round"? (Some people call
them carousell cards) They are stamps that are symmetrical that are
stamped a bunch of times, then glued together in such a way as to be 3
dimensional.
Rubbernecker also has eight fairly large ornament stamps that can be
used in this same way. Pretty cool.
I can send you the page out of the catalog that shows them if you wish.
(Please send a self addressed stamped envelope, if you'd be so kind)

Did we make it clear that Upstart is a coffee shop/bookstore combo?
You can actually read a book while you sip without being reprimanded!
Or could when I was there. The desserts are excellent, also...

I'm surprised to hear this about the Seaport Village stamp store. When I
was there the last time, it was a store about 40'x20' and crammed with
stamps. There were just narrow aisles in which to walk. I spent over
$50 just on stamps and that was before I was a serious stamper!

Also, there's a wonderful western/Native American store a little ways
down the boardwalk from the stamp store. (It has narrow aisles, also).
And I forgot to mention the Fudge Shop at Seaport Village and the great
mug shop (it's tiny, but full of mugs). Of course, the Village is worth a
visit just for itself with its proximity to the Bay and Coronado Bridge,
the kites that are usually flying, the boardwalks, the sidewalk
entertainers and/or entertainers in the square. There used to be a
wonderful, relatively inexpensive Greek restaurant, too. The stamps,
fudge and coffee are just bonuses....

Subject: RS: Kathy's SS
Hi there - I got back from vacation Sunday (well my body did anyway). We had
a wonderful time. I didn't get to the mysteries that you sent - the new
Patricia Cornwell was first in line and we were so busy fishing and hiking,
... that I didn't get any other reading done. I can't wait to start into
them. I liked her new one - some people say she's getting too commercialized
and putting out books too quickly to write well. I'll have to admit that I
found myself skimming over some things but the story kept me intrigued.
Your questions - First of all - I like caffeinated coffee - all kinds.
There's not any kind of candy that I don't like and also like all kinds of
chocolate. I don't have the questions handy - I'm at work <g> - so I'll try
to remember them. Books - I haven't had time or energy to read much lately
so I'm not up on the new authors. I will let you know what I think of the
ones you sent! I tend to like medical or legal mysteries but am open to
others. I'm not into what I call "trashy" love novels but romance is not
out. Not much into science fiction either. Stampscapes - I love mountains,
water, log cabin type scenes, ... We go camping alot (backpacking and the
air-conditioned camper type) and I really like nature. I love the new moon
stamps. I don't have many stamp pad colors that could be used with the tonal
applicator other than the basics (black, sky mist, and now brown! I'll have to
look at the others). I use markers directly on my stamps alot - have all the
Marvys and a few dual impress markers. I have a basic set of watercolor
pencils and like to use those. Floral/garden - don't really have a
favorite - I like realistic looking stamps. I recently got a set of herb stamps
that will be great for home-made labels (oils - bath and cooking, ...).
I can't think of anything else that you asked me offhand. BTW - I used the
canoe stamp to make a birthday card for Connie - we went to the lake for her
birthday. When we got there, we looked over a scenic overlook and there was
a canoe in the lake with the trees and mountains in the background -
beautiful!
Well - gotta go. BTW - I just got a free email account at www.excite.com so
that I could communicate with my secret stamper. If you decide to do this
just make sure that you don't put in your real name on any of the forms and
don't list your profile in their directory (so that I could possibly look it
up <g>). Oh yeah - I used the stipple brush with the lake scene and it

Subject: RS: TEA SWAP REC'D
This is one of my most favorite things..I collect them in real life so it
was fun to get this swap ;-)
Thanks Carlene for hosting!
CARLENE: a wonderful pin..bright blue card stock layered with black and a
tea cup in the middle. She also sent a tea cup embossed in gold on light
blue paper. The fold is the top of the cup and it is cut out in the shape
of the tea cup...Inside Thank You embossed in gold..very nice idea!!
LINDA LOO: She used the very fancy PSX teapot embossed in blue and cut out
layered on a white doily on a glossy green card..inside.. she used the
matching cups and embossed then in blue on either side of You are my Cup
of Tea..also embossed in blue.
CINDY: Very pretty pastel card. she started with a white card..then pink
mulberry paper and next a white heart shaped dolly. She has a purple tea
cup with white and pink....over flowing with flowers..inside..Thinking of
you. Very pretty soft colors ;-)
RIA: Tan card stock dry embossed with a fancy frame..mounted in the middle
are two cats having tea..in side is a bag of country garden tea and one of
the famous tea bag origami "stars". Thanks Ria!!
NO NAME: a gray card with a layer of flowered tissue paper (crumbled) with
a purple heart in the top left corner...a white dolly at the bottom with a
plate of heart shaped cookies..a large tea cup stamped in blue on a rose
colored paper...3 buttons on the bottom right..I like the button "cookies"!
SANDY: Sandy used her computer to print different types of tea on a soft
pink cardstock..then layered a piece of vellum trimmed with the deckle
scissors..on top of that hot pink the a lite shade of hot pink paper...then
white paper trimmed with deckle scissors with trio of tea cups embossed in
gold with a touch of color here and there....very nice!
Thanks everyone for the wonderful cards...I think I'll go have a cup of
tea!!

My girls and I went out to watch the meteor shower last night. The
youngest one didn't see anything, but I saw 2 meteors, and Rebekah said
she saw 2 meteors and a shooting star. It was fun...we tried to sleep
outside last night in the backyard...the ground was too uncomfortable
for me...I came in at 2:30 am to my own bed..the girls came in at 5
am...and Bekah wasn't a happy camper because Naomi tried to cuddle up
to her and got her all cold. Ah well, such is life.

Subject: RS: SS: Thank you from Shauna! (very long)
WOW!!! I have to say that I went from having a terrible SS to having an
absolutely TERRIFIC one!!!! Thank you so much! What was the best part
of it, is that you really seemed to have read my info and picked out
things so personally. Your thoughtfullness was so touching.
I also want to thank you for waiting patiently for this REAL THANK YOU.
I know Francis posted a little thank you to let you know the package had
come safely and all, but this is the real thank you!!! {hug} {hug}
{hug}
I am such a paper fiend -- they were great! The big roll with full size
sheets! They're so big I think I may even be able to part with some to
actually use them! The beautiful crinkled cream paper with the gold
spirals and silver rubbings WOW! Then the bronze tissue and beige
tissue with leaves printed on it, so lovely! The handmade paper -- did
you make it?-- with clippings of a Chinese newspaper -- how clever!!!
Then a little box chuck full of more paper!!! One whole pack of "Husk
Cards" with matching envelopes and another of "Gingerbread Cards" with
matching envelopes both from the Paper Patch. The colors are so earthy
and beautiful. (With a whole pack, I might just be able to spare some!)
Then, a whole big stack from your own paper stash! I don't know if I
could have parted with my paper so freely. (In fact, I don't know if I
will be able to part with these!) There were sheets of: a metalic
copper, handmade white with pink rose petals as well as green with
orange petals, a Florentine feather print, a rust cork, linens: olive
and cream, grey cloud cardstock, amazing bark (where did this come from
I *need* more!), blue tissue and white tissue both with gold marbeling,
Japanese papers - one white lace paper and molded paper, turquoise with
silver wallpaper sample, corragated sage cardstock, pale yellow-green
mulberry, four tiny sheets of vellum with beautifully torn edges -- all
ready to go (I have been curious to try working with vellum, now I'm
ready!), cream linen with golden grasses embedded in it, then five great
printed papers (Where did these come from? I think I *need* more of
them as well!) One is black with a gold zigzag design, next is turquoise
with purple fish, then black with teal flowers, and green with the same
flowers but in purple, then green with gold leaves.
What wonderful papers! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
BUT . . . . ..
That's not all!!!!!!!!
A Great Book! Francis brought it to me in the hospital and I think it
was a big help in keeping depression at bay!! Everyone who saw it (who
knows me) said, "Oh Shauna, that is just SO you!" The book was Vicki
leon's "UPPITY WOMEN of Ancient Times" It is great!!! This is HERitage
not HIStory! The dedication reads "To the uppity women in this book who
have waited so long for their applause and to the frisky females in my
family who inspired my search." Doesn't that set a tone? Then all
kinds of wonderful women are described. I especially loved reading about
Zenobia the Arab queen who defeated the Romans because one of my snakes
is named Zenobia! Another peak was although I have performed the ritual
to "Draw down the moon" many times, I did not know the origin was a
woman astronomer from Thessaly, Aglaonice!
I think my very most favorite thing was something this wonderful,
wonderful, SS made for me: a perfectly laminated book mark. It is so
well designed. On one side a female face and underneath it reads
"thinking seemed to work for her" and the other side has a woman
reaching for the moon (*drawing down the moon*) and it says "Sing back
the wild women." Something about that made tears come to me, "Sing back
the wild women." We can't bring them back, so many have been written out
of history and lost, but we can sing them back!
SO beautiful. So thoughtful. Thank you SS SO MUCH.

==========
"Oh, Now I get it"
by Janet Konttinen,
San Francisco Chronicle, July 22, 1997.
I remember seeing a kid in the grocery store with dirt and old food on
his face, wearing a filthy T-shirt, barefoot and eating a two-pound
candy bar. I couldn't imagine why his mother had brought him to the
store looking that way and why she would give him a candy bar at 10 in
the morning. That was before I had four kids. Now I know why.
His face was dirty because he was going through a phase in which
having his face wiped seemed worse to him than getting beaten. She
chose not to do either. His T-shirt was filthy becasuse it was his
favorite one. He wore it every day and every night. Just as they were
walking out the door to go to the store, he had pulled it out of the
clothes
hamper and surpised her with it at the front door. By then she didn't
dare risk interrupting the momentum she'd built toward the car by going
back into the house to get a clean one. He had shoes on when they left
for the store, but he took them of in the car and threw one out the
window on the freeway. She was relieved it was the left shoe, since
he'd thrown a right one out the window the week before. He was eating
a big candy bar because she had promised him he could pick out his
own treat at the store if he didn't throw the cat into the pool for a
whole
week. She was desperate because it was the neighbor's cat and
couldn't swim.
I used to think that my children would eat only fresh, organic fruits and
vegetables and free-range chicken. Now I look forward to our
semiweekly luncheon at McDonald's. I have acquired a genuine love for
secret sauce, and relish the fact that my kids can't do anything wrong
there. This includes drenching their french fries in ketchup, then
spitting their cola out on top of the fries, molding the whole mess into
a big ball, then throwing it at one another.
Before, when I would see a woman wheeling a kid around in a dirty
stroller, I'd ask myself, "Why did she give birth to that child if she
didn't plan to keep the stroller clean?" The other week at my annual
stroller washing party, I found ground cover growing in the storage
compartment of one of mine.
When I would see children throwing fits in public, I would wonder why
the parents didn't just tie the kids' arms and legs toegether and put
them in the trunk of the car until they had finished shopping. Now I
know it's because they left the rope at home.
When several children were screaming in an airplane, I'd wonder why
there wasn't a separate airplane, and a separate planet, for kids. I
know now that their parents wish the same thing and that they had to
take the kids to attend the family reunion at Aunt Lois' so they could
see Uncle George before he kicked the bucket.
The kids were crying because their parents wouldn't let them eat the
headset, stick their fingers in the ear of the lady in front of them, or
press the attendant call button for the 100th time. The parents were
preoccupied with trying to decide where to change the really smelly
diaper. Should they change it on the seat next to the couple on their
honeymoon, or on the floor in the back where five perky flight
attendants were playing bumper cars with those one-ton food carts?
Forget the bathroom. They were designed to hold one person with short
legs. The parents feared that the smell would cause a panicky
passenger to pull open the emergency exit in order to trigger the release
of the oxygen masks, and they'd all be sucked out of the airplane.
Now when I see a little girl wearing cowboy boots on the wrong feet, a
pink bathing suit on backward and Army helmet, I think "She IS
absolutely sure that her shoes are on the right feet, and she likes the
way the helmet looks with the swimsuit. And, no, she doesn't want to
wear a jacket because 'she likes to be cold'. She is happy."
