Subject: RS: UPDATE 08-09-97 Treasure Book Class
Thanks for everyone's patience! This was a big project...
When/If I hold the next class, I will do most of the writing,
illustrating, copies, etc., before I even announce the class.
My creativity just ran away with me while I was drawing up the
Treasure Book info and samples, but it was a great experience
for me and I'm tickled to pieces that you guys are happy with
what I've sent to you! :) A project of this size makes keeping
up with email and paperwork difficult and I appreciate SO MUCH
the wonderfully encouraging and supportive messages (AND the
phone call!!) I've received in response to this class. So many
of you took the time to make me smile, thank you!!! I LOVE to
be appreciated! :D {VBG}
The last bunch of packages are in the final phase of ready
and *all* participants should have the project sheets
in their mail boxes next week. Today's load of
Treasure Book Class packages have been mailed out to
the participants listed below:
Audra Silva
Betsy Ritter
Elizabeth Estes
Maryann Gastaldo
Susan Ruff
Julie Carleton
Lisa Varshal
Dianna Knapp
Trish Rodgers
Wendy Bean

"My point is to make people aware!! Know the store hours. I want to
leave on time too. I have a family to go to. Saturdays seem to be the
worst.
We've been there all day and want to go home!!
We have to close down the computers/cash reg. and do other closing
procedures...but we can't until all sales are done. So we stand at the
front and wait.
I hope this gives some a glimpse to the other side of the issue.
ok. Now you can flame me :)
Laurie"
- ---------------------
No flame here, but I have my extinguisher at the ready. I know this is
going to piss off some people, but that's life.
Laurie, I totally agree with you about this. Courtesy works both ways.
Though its lovely when a store is able to cater to its customers by
extending their hours a bit every now and then, customers have also got
to realize that the folks that work in these stores also have lives,
families, appointments, exhaustion, etc. and cannot do this as a rule.
I have not found a gentle notice that a store would be closing soon to be
offensive. To me its just a common sense "heads up". Though, granted,
there is a nice way of doing this, and a not so nice way. Was this what
the original post was about? That the notice was made in a rude fashion?
Or was the poster just offended that the notice was made at all? I
didn't keep the post.
I know of places that if you call ahead, knowing you might not make it
before closing, they'll stay open for you. I know Stampo has done this
often. But to just expect a store/shopkeeper to keep all hours just
because some folks have no sense of time or concern for another isn't
right. It takes advantage of people.
I've walked into stores that didn't have vacuums going, totally unaware
of the time, and have been told, as I walk in "We'll be closing in 10
minutes." Oh, ok. So I either get what I came for and pass on the
aisle wandering, or I take myself a quick 10 min looksee at what they
have to offer and make plans for another visit when I can spend
more time browsing.
If shops stayed open for every person that trickled in, some would never
be able to close. That's not fair.
How do we know whether or not the shopkeepers have children that have to
be picked up at a certain time, or a dental appointment, or a child in a
school play that expects Mom to be there? These people are not our
"servants", they're folks with lives families and obligations of their
own. They're folks who deserve respect just like everyone else. Their
time is precious too.
Though I do agree that the "businessman" who complained about overtime
pay yet made $700 is a bit ridiculous.
There are exceptions to everything.

Not to whine, because it is worth it to me, but I don't have local access
for any online service. We live in a teeny-tiny little town out in the
middle of nowhere and it is a toll call to call any other town! I have
aol and juno, but like juno better for the list because it downloads
faster, thus costing me less, plus I like the signature line feature and
the easy deleting.

Subject: RS:TAN>customers>LONG
My daughter works at the local Dairy Queen. They are supposed to close
at a certain time. But her boss has told them that they cannot close
until there are no customers and the store is clean. So they very
seldom get out on time as someone is always walking in and on Friday and
Saturday evenings they stay open till 11pm and that is also when the
movie around the corner ends. Well you know what that means... Her boss
willnot even post a closing time as she might miss a customer. These
are all high school age kids working in the evenings.
I also just found out that who ever "closes" has to take all of the
money to the owner/bosses house. My daughter had to do it the other
night for the first time and there were these big guys hanging around
her car. They called the owners, who told them to stay inside and
called the police. Luckily the owners came over and picked up the money
that night. I'm not to sure I want my daughter taking this kind of
risk. Sorry to carry on. This DQ is one of my soapboxes and once I
start I get carried away. Don't even get me started on lunches and
breaks... :)

I got a DK book too! It is heavy stone cardstock with the corrogated corner
and brown splatters and grey marbling with all the wonderful little petroglyph
stamps. I think the faint gold sheen is a sponging of irridescent gold paint. I also
think the cover and interior pages were tea died to give them this lovely
aged stone brown color. The interior pages are either thin rice paper or maybe
cofee filters ?? (even if they're not, that idea inspires me -- I have a slew of filters
in a lovely shade of unbleached brown) with more of these little petroglyphs stamped
in subtle metallica and stone colors. Really cool. The shape of the book is like
a large boulder. DK, are you marketing these stamps or are they your own little
hand carved treasures. I would really like to know more about this book -- your
techniques and the stamps. Please email me.
Deni, our hostess enclosed a little thank you card that is really elegant. It is a rectangle of
black matte card about 2X3 inches with a deckled edge stamped with (I'm guessing) the
colorbox treasures ink (gold, copper, silver) saying "Thanks for participating in our swap, Deni"
Mounted above the words if a smaller decked piece of really neat handmade paper
that is mottled browns with a bit of gold and stamped on this is a hand witha spiraling
arrow inside. When I was a kid growing up in Utah, we learned how the Anasazi and other
neolithic peoples would blow pigment through a hollow reed over their hand as it was
placed against the stone wall as a signature or a sign to others that "Kilroy was here."
This stamp is like one of those hands. Deni, where is the paper from?
Karla WIlliams did a lovely card on a piece of dark green cardstock. The border is
smudged with a copper metallic rub and has little copper shapes glued on. Then there
is a piece of red sandstone colored paper torn and embossed with copper square design.
Mounted on this is a silk leaf, a fann of copper and a gecko embossed in copper
on green cardstock and trimmed. Very nice, and I like the sentiment expressed
on the label on the plastic envy.
Donna Joy made a great postcard on a flecked buff color card. The card has been
stippled (?) with green ink and streaked with copper ink and stamped with Rubber
Poet Petroglyph stamps in mossy greens and browns. One of these background
images had been picked out ina clear thick ep or envirotex. Mounted to one
side on foam tape is a gecko that has been embossed with a really neat EP --
green with gold (What is this, Donna?) and next to it is a small nest of spanish moss (or
something similar). Lovely!
Suzanne Owens card is a tan background with black embossed square patterns,
upon that is a red card with embossed black horned man figures, then a rectangle of
black corrugated and a fancy edged tan square with a neat turtle. Neatly layered,
very rich card. The images really work together.
Finally, from Penelope Lincoln, a black ridged background with large rectangle that has
a decorative edge brayered turquoise, salmon, orange-yellow and green rainbow,
with three black Kokopellis. Simple and quite powerful.
I must say again, I am truly impressed with these cards. Thanks, Deni! Great swap!

Subject: RS: Trade Question
Could I have some opinions please about trading items? What time frame is
considered appropriate after you receive an item? I mailed out a few
catalogs for trade, but have only received something back from one person.
Is this just a chance you take when trading for something? Please, no
flames. I'm not trying to be selfish, just wondering what is considered
appropriate. I don't mind giving things away, but when a trade is set, one
would think you would receive something back. Anyone have any comments or
similar experience? Thanks, Erin :)

Melissa...for one thing I doubt that an 87 yr old woman meant to intend for
you to think that she wasnt apppreciating your talents...she has poor vision
and may be hard for her to see your talent and it might hurt to look at your
talent...send her something pretty in white and maybe you will be able to get
a positive response about your talents and how much more she appreciates
them...she probably hates it when no one remembers her vision and she cant
see what someone writes her put your feet in her shoes probably most
frustrating for her also...

what I can get in return...great lesson my mother taught me ...do things for

I recieved Michelle's coaster in the mail yesterday. Cool!
It is a laminated green card with a square of cork mounted
on it. there are coffee beans glued to the corners and a great
handcarved image of a hand holding a tray with a big steaming
cup on it (stamped in brown fabrico ink). The labe on the back is
surrounded by gold stamped coffee beans (also hand carved).
I'm really glad you decided to play, Michelle, this is cool!
I also never posted about the swap, but as hostess, I am honored
to be the proud owner of a slew of really fabulous cards!! This was
a great swap. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Well, unfortunately, only Stampcas and I were able to
participate in Holli's swap, so you all missed out.
Stampcas did a lovely card with a sponged blue
background with a moss green tile floor and columns
and a lovely red draped woman figure in the foreground.
Thanks for the elegant card, Cassia.
Also, thanks Holli, for hosting. And again I apologize
for my email and the misunderstanding over the reason I
got my cards back.

Subject: RS: Itty Bitty Book Swappers
Hi everyone,
Has everyone gotten their swap packages from the Itty Bitty Book
Swap?? I am afraid the Post Office has decided to keep mine. I'm just
sort of hoping that Christy didn't get them all sent out before the baby
made its appearance, but I think I'm just fooling myself. The worst
part is that I made 18 just so I could see a bunch of the entries!!
Life can play tricks on you, can't it??
Does anyone have any extras of the book they sent in?? I would send
you another something (? - book or...) in exchange. I would love to see
some of them.

From: Rustamping@aol.com
Subject: RS: RS/COM a newer THINGY.....A CLOCK IN A BOX...YOU WILL LOVE THIS
I was shopping a month ago and came across what I feel is a new venture for
rubber stampers!
What caught my eye, was the similarity of the stamps we use for our crafts,
and the professional ones were selling from $13.99 to $15.99... I hae made at
least 10 so far and shown my little world of people here and everyone agrees
with me, that THIS was made for us...RUBBER STAMPERS... I want to refer to it
as the CLOCK IN THE BOX.......
You take any two piece box... white matte finish or the brown craft boxes,
available at a dept. store or craft
store... A Bangle Braclet size
or slightly larger..i have used all different ones.
You take a separate piece of paper and stamp your desired picture (it should
not be larger than
the top of the box)
You then take the paper you stamped your design on and wrap the top of the
box with it so hat your design
sits in the center...however,
if it is the main focus, you will move it slightly...
After it is wrapped you make a slit where you want the clock to come out with
a rzor blad...you take a pencil point and make a big enough hole for the
clock mechanism to come out. you have to slide the razor over the hole to
remove excess cardboard.
You take the actual clock mechanism and poke it through.
You then put the hands on the clock
You put magnets on the top and bottom of the back of the box
Voila...you have a great present for a little bit of money.
So I bought the clock for $15.00 ready made, went to the craft store and
picked up the mechanisms to make the clock for about $6.00-$7.00, raided my
bureau drawers for a box.... and with in 1 1/2 hours i had "my self" an a
new little CLOCK IN THE BOX...
I bought three different size boxes, called on my caraft suppliers and I am
ready to take orders so that you too have a new inexpensive way to suse your
stamlps and make holiday gifts.
What is so cool is that you can use personal pictures and just glue them to
the box and give it as a gift...a baby picture, a wedding picture, graduation
picture..ANYTHING and attach a clock to it!
These clock if you attach a magnet to where you want to hang it can be in a
car, a bathroom, a bedroom, endless places...if you want to use velcro on the
back instead of a magnet you can do that too
My prices will be between $5.00 and $6.00 for everything ....(except your
paper and stamps), (shipping extra)
It will include everything:
boxes ( will advise what sizes are available)
clock mechansims
I will give you numbered face (although you may decide not to use the face)
3 clock hands (hour -second -minute)
number placement card
and instructions
Once the UPS strike is over I will have a 10 Day turn around time...
In the meantime I want all your feedback ask me all your questions, and go
look in the craft store and see how expensive the mechanisms are...
you will need double face tape
and a pair of plyers
let me hear from you
rustamping (kathie)
I have attached one of my creations for you to see..
P.S. please excuse any typo errors, i am so excited about this and i wanted
to get it on the board right away...thanks
