Subject: RS:CLASS TAUGHT WITH CLASS!
Hi everbody! Just wanted to brag about one of our own...Christine Cox.
My DH (yup you heard that right) and I took a class with Christine as
the teacher tonight at a store in Oakland CA. She was teaching
backgrounds. I learned alot of fun and new things! It was alot of fun
to watch DH play with all the embossing powders and inks! Christine was
such a fun and easy going teacher! She really makes old students and
new feel welcome and relaxed! I of course kinda kissed the teachers
bottom, Christine is the host of a swap here on the list for Faberge
eggs, and I found a calender on eggs for her! Met her Mom too!! Not
only is she a Mom on the list but a fun Mom in real life too! UGH I
can't remember Mom's name!!! Oh no now I will get a spanking at the
show in San Mateo on Saturday!
It is soo much fun to meet folks from the list...To be able to take a
class from them is truly the "icing" on the cake!

From: Larry Anderson & Diane Hare <foxnhare@goldrush.com>
Subject: Re: RS: TAN; Where *is* Canada?
Canada is a country not a pair of continents. I'd used "Canadian to
refer to the usages of that country which were different from common
usuages in the most of the United States of America and the remainder of
the American continents.
I do *not* refer to myself as speaking "American" because I believe that
noun and adjective should primarily refer to the two continents, rather
than to just one country, but that's just my opinion. An alternative is
that the primary language spoken in Canada is "American English" because
it is notably different from British English and Canada is a part of
North America.
If the rest of the Canadians on the mail list would be better pleased if
I'd called it "American English" because there's not enough difference
to be significant, then I'll call it "American English". No problem.
I have an abridged OED and assorted USA-origin dictionaries. I need
*both* types because the language is *not* the same. Words don't always
mean the same thing and some words just aren't part of the vocabulary.
I wouldn't expect to find as many words of Cherokee, Cree, Apache, etc.
origin in an English dictionary intended for Canadian use as I'd expect
to find in one for general USA markets. I wouldn't be surprised if
English dictionaries for Canadian use included more words from northern
"native" peoples. Repeating, some words just aren't part of the
vocabulary.

Hi all!
I'm totally new to Rubber Stamping (well, I've been "messing" with it and
and embossing for a few months), but as a Canadian, I can help you out a
bit on the following:
You ARE right when you say Canada is BIG! The most populated areas are in
the provinces of British Columbia, (west coast), Ontario and Quebec (east
coast). We are officially a bilingual country - having English and French
as our 2 official languages. Mostly it's the province of Quebec that is
French, and you will hear English as the main language most other places!
(I don't know any French, but wish I did. I have German as my 2nd language)

Ok - here in Canada, the government pays for our health expenses - hospital
stays, surgeries (unless cosmetic, or elective), and also a portion of our
prescription drugs - depending on our incomes in the latter case.
A lot of "retired" Canadians go south for the winter, as it's very cold and
snowy here during that time of year. Our health insurance will cover us
when we are out of country, but the stay can not be more than 6 months at
one time, if memory serves me correctly. (Obviously, I've never been out of
Canada that long <bg>)
> I THINK (but I'm not sure

No, we don't lose our citizenship - just our medical coverage. (Pensions
for retired people may also be affected, I'm not till that age yet, so
can't speak there....) Once we're Canadian citizens, we remain Canadian
citizens, just as you do, until we move to another country, and attain
citizenship there.
>There are different holidays also, and some that while
> they have the same name as in the US, are on different dates and are
> celebrated differently.
The ones that are on the same days are: Christmas, Boxing Day, New Years,
Valentine's, Groundhog Day, Easter, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Labour Day,
and I think that's it.
Our equivalent to your July 4th is on July 1, and is called "Canada Day" -
when we celebrate having become a nation of 10 provinces and 2 territories.
The first weekend in August many provinces have a "Civic Holiday" - created
to give us a long weekend, to enjoy more of the summer I guess. <vbg> Our
Thanksgiving Day is in September, and on November 11 we celebrate
Remembrance Day, while the US citizens call it Armistice Day, correct? I
think that covers most of the holidays....
Our countries are actually VERY much alike in many ways, and share the
longest "free" (that is - no armed guards and barricades) borders in the
world. Amazing fact of freedom!
> We went to Montreal once (for Expo 67) and got lost. We were driving
> along the TransCanada highway. We didn't take any exits or make any
Although I've never been to the province of Quebec (where the city of
Montreal is), I do know that many people there do not speak English. Guess
I'd be lost there too.......
We here in Manitoba (my province) watch a lot of US tv - CNN, also channels
out of Nashville, Los Angelos, Detroit, Grand Forks and Fargo, North Dakota
(our neighbor to the south) - so we know more about the US, than I think
the US people know about us.
Also - our dollar is worth only about 65 - 70 cents at the most right now,
in the United States - as decided daily by the world monetary market. So if
you came up here, your dollar would be worth anywhere from $1.30 to
$1.40.......... depending on the daily rate!
Guess by now you're all sick of hearing of Canada, but I just thought I'd
throw in some Canadian trivia!
Oh - and we do NOT live in Igloos, as is a common misconception - in
Manitoba actually, our summers are often as hot as Texas, or hotter. Our
hot spells just don't last as long! We have 4 distinct seasons - however
winter seems the longest when you have a lot of snow, blizzards, etc.
Thanks for listening......

Subject: RS: Purple Swap Announcement
Just wanted to post a note to everyone who has joined The Color Purple
swap. I've decided to make it a little more interesting (and fun!) by
having a contest. When all the projects come in, I will have an impartial
group of "judges" vote for their favorites. (I won't be a judge myself,
this will be completely unbiased.) There will be a first, second and third
"purple prize" for the three best purple creations. (Yes, the prizes
themselves are PURPLE!)
Also wanted to add that you may send 11 for 10 instead of 6 for 5, if you
would like to receive a larger selection back. (Postage will be the same;
I'll make up any difference.)
So get out those purple pens, pencils, pads and paper and whip up something
potentially prize-winning!
Anyone who hasn't yet joined, there's PLENTY of time, so email me to sign
up if you're a purple lover (or just want to try for a purple prize)!

Thanks for the idea of using my own fingers, guys!
Yes, I did try it. But, I need something a bit more
consistent and less detailed than a 'real life' finger print.
Luckily, it seems Sheryl Porter has finger prints in a number
of sizes, so hopefully I can get one from her.
Thanks to everyone who helped me out!

Subject: Re: RS: TAN: Parking spaces?- Good Children
Lissa,
I agree 100% with what you said.
My kids 4 and 7 they know the rules, they know not to walk away from the car,
or run in the driveway or parking lot, but heck sometimes they forget them, or
are so excited to be going to the mall or out somewhere that they don't
remember.
As for having 100% goody two shoes, hell I'll take my kids anyday over a goody
two shoes, my kids have their own minds and thoughts and are indivduals and
that is what I want them to be. My nieces are robots, goody two shoes, who are
seen but never heard, they are polite children, but I can see it in their eyes
when they are over here, they want to be children, they want to run, play,
explore. But they can't my sister in law wouldnt allow it they are to sit and
when spoken to and only then can they respond Uggh that's worse for a child.
Do I want my children to behave and respect people yes ofcourse and do they ?
most of the time they do. But I want them living, breathing, thinking,
feeling people.
I dont want to raise robots, I want them to live with their hearts, to feel,
to question, to wonder, to learn. I want them to bombard me with why and how
come and to push the limits ( to a point) to figure out it for themselves.
Yes my kids are brats sometimes, so arent I, but they have hearts and
feelings, to see my 4 year old hug someone at preschool cause they are sad or
to hear my daughter 7 tell me that she is going to adopt only baby girls from
China cause they don't like girls as much as they like boys over there.
Lissa, your children sound wonderful to me.

Actually, Mexico is part of North America. There are 23 countries
in North America...and 14 other "political units." The 23 countries
are: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada (3,800,000
sq. miles), Costa Rica, Cuba (42,800 sq. miles), Dominica, Dominican
Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala (42,000 sq. miles), Haiti,
Honduras (43,000 sq. miles), Jamaica, Mexico ( 758,000 sq. miles),
Nicaragua (50,000 sq.miles), Panama, St. Christopher and Nevis, St. Lucia,
St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, United States
(3,618,000 sq. miles)
The other 14 political units are Anguilla, Aruba, Bermuda, Cayman Islands,
Greenland ( 840,000 sq. miles), Guadeloupe, Martinique, Montserrat,
Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rico, St. Pierre and Miquelon, Turks and
Caicos Islands, Virgin Islands (US) and Virgin Islands (British).
Largest population: USA - 245,400,000
Canada - 26,500,000
Mexico - 84,964,000
Highest spot Mt. McKinley in Alaska 20,320 ft above sea level
Lowest spot Badwater, near Death Valley 282 foot below sea level
I have them memorized, of course...

Wait a minute, wait a minute! Are you actually suggesting that by offering
pregnant women/parents with small/or many children the gesture of a parking
space close to the door that some women would actually be more inclined to
become pregnant just to take advantage of this?! Seems a little radical
doesn't it?!

Megan,
Since you're using HALOS now, I'm guessing that you probably won't have much
need for mounting your stamps on wood blocks...but if you ever do, the foam
mounts work great for indexing the wood! (I have a friend who doesn't use
HALOS, but she *does* occasionally buy UMs and then puts them on her own wood
blocks.) Just put a piece of double-stick tape on the foam, slap your UM die
onto it, and carefully index your wood mount. After it dries, you can then
pull off the die, put your cushion on it, and adhere it to the indexed mount.
Many of those old foam mounts also make a good substitution for PenScore...you
know, that stuff you heat with the embossing gun and press into objects in
order to make textured "reverse image" stamps? It's basically the same type
of material.
If you have larger pieces, you can cut out your own decorative "solid design"
stamps, the kind you'd use for stamping on furniture and walls. I know that
Printworks sells a series of these, and they're made out of that dense foam
material. They stamp great, too!
Jackie :-)
